Villa d’Este, designed by architect/painter Tibaldi Pellegrino on the shores of
Italy’s Lake Como, has been voted as the Best Hotel in the World 2009 by
Forbes Traveler 400.
The hotel, which was built in 1575 in the Renaissance style on the grounds
of a former 15 th century convent, was originally known as the Villa del Garovo
in the mid 1500s and soon became a resort for politicians and intellectuals.
During the late 18 th century, the villa underwent major restoration with
the addition of a new Italian-style park with a nymphaeum and temple,
featuring a 17 th century statue of Hercules hurling Lichas into the sea.
In 1815, the villa became the residence of Caroline of Brunswick and the
Princess of Wales who renamed it Villa d’Este and had some of the gardens
landscaped in the English style, although many of the Renaissance gardens
still exist today.
The five-star luxury property, which has been a hotel since 1873,
is frequented by celebrities and politicians, and is a member of the
Fondazione Altagamma, the prestigious association that represents the
best Italian luxury brands. In 2008, Villa d’Este was listed as the
15 th best hotel in Europe and the 69 th best in the world by Travel+
Leisure magazine. The classic property continues to set contemporary

Bloomingdale’s will open in two locations in Dubai Mall this month – a 5,000 square metre Home store
on the Lower Ground floor and an apparel and accessories store of 13,500 square metres – the first
stores for the iconic New York retailer outside the United States.
Featuring the iconic Bloomingdale’s black and white checkerboard flooring, the Home store is a
fusion of specialty shops offering furniture, bedding, cookware, kitchen accessories, fine china, crystal,
decorative accessories and more. Designer greats including Ralph Lauren and Barbara Barry will be
represented along The Street of Shops, with a water fountain at its heart, as will be the signature butter
cream frosted cupcakes from the first international Magnolia Bakery; Bloomie’s Ice Cream parlor;
custom blended tea from SalonTea; literary reads from Assouline and Rizzoli New York; the Art Gallery;
and three dedicated gift stores including New York, New York for Bloomingdale’s keepsakes; the Arabic
Bazaar for a blend of traditional and contemporary artifacts and the Vintage store offering a discovery
shop of antiques from across the globe.
Other highlights of the Home store include Gift Registry; a state-of-the-art demonstration kitchen for
live cooking and a team of full-time interior designers at the dedicated Interior Design Studio.
Ever since founders Joseph and Lyman Bloomingdale first promoted the 19th-century fad, the hoop
skirt, the store has been considered visionary, not only in their fashions but also in their promotional
campaigns. Its trademark Brown Bag is instantly recognisable around the world.

The eco-friendly, yet very comfortable, Futu – short for future – office chair by HAG,
part of Scandinavian Business Seating, has received the Award for Design Excellence
from the Norwegian Design Council. Not only are 99 per cent of the materials used
in the chair recyclable and 50 per cent of the raw materials used to create it already
recycled, but also only renewable energy was used in its production. However, low
emissions are not its only quality: the ergonomic chair was developed with a new seat
mechanism that follows your position and adjusts to your movements.
