MOST KIDS
ARE BULLIED
SEVEN OUT OF TEN CHILDREN ARE
BULLIED AT SOME POINT
HUNDREDS of young people from schools across
the UK were in London on Monday to mark the start
of anti-bullying week.
by editor Nicky Cox
Around 300 schoolkids were at a special conference to talk about
why they want to tackle bullying. Some of the young people were
bullying victims themselves.
Girls Aloud star Nicola Roberts was also at the event, organised by
the Diana Award charity. She has been bullied herself and has found
that many fans experience it too. She has asked for a meeting with
the Government’s Education Secretary, Michael Gove, to talk about
how bullying can be stamped out in our schools.
The idea of anti-bullying week is to encourage young people to
talk openly about bullying and how to beat it. Figures show that
seven out of ten children are victims at some point during their
school lives.
An increasing problem is cyber-bullying, with nearly four out of
ten teenagers saying they have been bullied either online or on
their mobile phones. Abusive emails and text messages are the
most common forms of cyber-bullying.
If you are being affected by bullying you can call ChildLine on
0800 1111 or go to www.childline.org.uk. Another place to get
help is from CyberMentors, which is a website where young people
aged 11 to 25 are trained to help other young people who are
being bullied. All you need to do is log on and start chatting at
www.cybermentors.org.uk. If your school has been involved in
CyberMentors training, then there may be CyberMentors available
to talk to you face-to-face if you’d prefer.
Greenest way to
dry your hands
by Natalie Curtis
PAPER towels and hand dryers
create 70% more greenhouse
gases than the newest
technology, a new study
has found.
Scientists at the Massachusetts
Institute of Technology in America
made the discovery after carrying
out the first big investigation into the
greenest way to dry your hands.
They compared the seven different
ways most people dry their hands and
discovered that the greenest option
is to use a cold-air hand dryer called
an Airblade. The Airblade uses a layer
of cold air travelling at over 640km/h
(400 mph). It is said to dry hands in ten
seconds and uses less electricity than
other hand dryers
Most people think that recycled
paper towels are best for the
environment, but the scientists
discovered that these are no better
than new paper towels. Both were
found to generate over three times
more carbon emissions than the
Airblade dryers.
Alan Youd, Headmaster at Hawkedon
Primary School in Reading, said that
Airblade dryers have helped his school
go green: “We’re working really hard to
save energy, so the taps are automatic,
the lights are automatic and the
Airblade hand dryer fits right in”.
Schools to close as
teachers vote to strike
Schools across England and Wales could be closed one day this month because
head teachers have said they will go on strike.
They are taking the strike action as a protest
at planned changes to their pensions, which are
the payments they will get when they retire.
The Government is making the changes to
their pensions – along with other groups of
The changes mean teachers will have to
‘Super’ Mario has got the
But this Super Mario is not the
Both Berlusconi and the Greek
has helped cause a financial crisis for
Health fears for children
caught in Pakistan floods
More than half a million children are at risk of disease in
Pakistan’s worst-affected flood areas.
A leading children’s charity, Plan
International, is warning that around
two thirds (66%) of families don’t
have access to clean water, which is
one of the basic things people need
to stay healthy.
Rashid Javed from Plan said:
“Food is also a major issue, because
crops have been destroyed and
livestock killed. There is no chance
of cultivation of new crops in
many areas.”
by Ian Prince
The charity says it has set up 5,000
family shelters and handed out 6.5
million litres of clean water to drink.
Other charities say there are a total
of nine million people in need of aid,
but that the delivery of aid to people
is behind schedule, as people are not
donating enough money to help.
The floods were caused by heavier
than normal monsoon rains.
November could be the
warmest on record
WITH just weeks to go before Christmas, Britain has
been enjoying a long-lasting mild autumn.
Children have put off wearing their winter coats to school as the
weather has felt more like mild May than chilly November. Nature, too,
has been behaving like it’s spring, with trees holding onto their leaves,
some plants still flowering, dragonflies sighted in Yorkshire
and crickets heard in the South
of England.
Beekeepers in Devon have
seen their insects still collecting
nectar when they are usually
staying in their hives.
There has also been a call
not to put the clocks back in
the autumn. A health group
says the lighter evenings would
encourage children to play
outdoors more.
Oil pumped off stranded cargo ship
A GIANT cargo ship which got stuck on a reef off the coast of New Zealand has had all its oil pumped off to avoid
an ecological disaster.
Salvage teams decided to
carry out the tricky operation
as the ship, the
Rena, was in danger of
breaking apart.
Around 1,000 sea birds
have already been killed
by an oil leak, but many
more birds along with other
marine life would have been
at risk from the oil.
The ship is stranded in the
Bay of Plenty, an area famous
for its wildlife, including
dolphins and penguins, and
also its long sandy beaches.
Around 1,300 containers
are still on board and a
special crane will start
removing these too.
The ship ran aground on a
reef last month. The captain
and second-in-charge may
EDITOR’S
COMMENT
Editor Nicky Cox MBE
I’M generally quite a mild person, but
bullying makes me really angry.
Nobody has the right to make anybody
else feel bad. It’s as simple as that.
And we all have a responsibility to do
something about it if we see it happening.
It’s all too easy to turn a blind eye. Perhaps,
even, to thank your lucky stars that it’s not
you being picked on. But can you imagine
what it must be like for a bullying victim
to come into school, or to work, every day
feeling bad, sad and scared?
We all have to stand up to bullies, to stamp
it out once and for all. These days, bullying
can follow its victims around – online and on
mobile phones. That is the worst thing of all,
I think. That there is no escape for a victim,
even in their own home, where they should
be able to be safe.
So, if you see any nastiness going on, don’t
join in and don’t ignore it. Instead, offer a
hand of friendship to the victim. They may
not be safe at home but there is safety in
numbers. Be a number for them. Someone
they can count on.
Rainbow Warrior
3 sets sail!
by Natalie Curtis
Environmental charity
Greenpeace has launched its
brand new ship, the Rainbow
Warrior III.
This week, the vessel made its maiden
voyage up the River Thames in London.
Thom Yorke from the band Radiohead
and Damon Albarn from Gorillaz
were on board.
The new Rainbow Warrior is one of the
most environmentally-friendly ships
ever made. The ship and its crew sail
the world, protecting the environment
and campaigning on green issues, like
climate change.
Greenpeace says the ship runs mostly
on wind power. It moves as fast as most
other ships its size, with action boats that
can be deployed in minutes – even in
waves up to 3.5 metres high! The Warrior
does have electric engines to help out
when it’s not windy enough, but the heat
from the engines is also used to heat
water on the ship and warm the cabins.
The ship has a helicopter landing pad
on board too, so Greenpeace can keep an
‘eye in the sky’. This helps them to spot
activities that damage the environment,
like illegal fishing and logging.
The Rainbow Warrior 3 replaces the old
Rainbow Warrior 2, which has been turned
into a hospital in Bangladesh.
Takeover!
Caprice, left, and Naomi chat to Nick Clegg, the Deputy Prime Minister
two schoolgirls got a glimpse into how the Government works this week, as part of the national Takeover Day.
Naomi Mwakamowo, 15, and Caprice
Duberry, 14, wandered around the corridors
of the Cabinet Office in London and chatted
to Nick Clegg, the Deputy Prime Minister,
about how the Government communicates
with young people.
Takeover Day is organised by the Children’s
Commissioner and lets thousands of young
people get a taste of working life. As well as
seeing behind the scenes, they also get to
give their opinions on how things are run.
by Ian Eddy
This year was the fifth year that the scheme
has been running, and organisers hoped that
around 50,000 kids would take part.
“There needs to be better communication
between young people and politicians,”
said Naomi. “Young people should be more
involved in politics.”
“I’m interested in politics because I don’t
like the way things are run right now,” said
Caprice. “So if I have my views, I can change
what I think has gone wrong.”
Naomi and Caprice both think that a youth
panel could help to provide a link between
the Government and young people.
“They are making our decisions,” said
Naomi, “and all we need to do to make it a
good relationship is to communicate. There
are a lot of things that the Government does
that are really good, but we just don’t know
about it.”
First ever Dance Proms
THE first ever Dance Proms took place at the Royal Albert Hall on Sunday.
There were just 25 acts performing, selected
from 300 entries across the UK. I was lucky enough
to be one of the dancers and performed a song
and dance number called Dirty Laundry, along
with other dancers from Julie Sianne Theatre Arts
in Byfleet, Surrey. Unbelievably, two acts from our
Dirty Laundry
dance school were chosen to perform and some
of our younger girls danced a number called
The Circus.
Dance Proms was organised by the UK’s leading
dance organisations to celebrate dance in all
its forms and the unique relationship between
students and their dance teachers.
Entries were submitted online by video and were
judged by a panel, including experts from all three
dance organisations.
We rehearsed all day, with the show beginning at
7pm. It felt amazing to perform in a world-famous
by Bethany Cox, 15, from
Julie Sianne Theatre Arts
venue. Nothing prepared me for the grandeur and
atmosphere of the Royal Albert Hall.
Afterwards I spoke to Dance Proms patron,
Wayne Sleep. He said: “Dance Proms is a wonderful
idea because it brings
schools together from all
over the UK. It promotes
dance. It makes it more
popular and that’s what
we’re here to do – to get
more people interested
Me with Wayne Sleep
in dance.”
for the second year in a row, classes across the UK can enter a
competition to win a science lesson with Professor Brian Cox.
This time, the lucky class will get to combine meeting Brian with a class trip, as the
lesson will take place at the world-renowned Jodrell Bank Observatory near Manchester.
As part of the lesson, the winning class will get to see the observatory’s huge Lovell
“The scientific world is hugely fascinating and moving,” says Brian, “and if it’s taught in
the right way, it can be tremendously inspiring and a lot of fun! So, for all those schools
In humans, massage helps to lower stress.
This can be tested by measuring levels of
substances like cortisol in the blood. If a person
is stressed, their levels of cortisol increase.
Now, scientists have found that contact
similar to a massage can help to lower the
levels of cortisol in reef fish too.
Reef fish often go to specific areas of the
sea called cleaning stations, where smaller
cleaner fish will pick off any parasites from the
reef fish’s body. However, the cheeky cleaner
fish often cheat at their jobs and eat mucus
from the fish’s body instead. Although the
cleaner fish much prefer to eat mucus, the
reef fish don’t get any benefit from this, and
often start conflicts with the cheats.
When these conflicts start, the cleaner
fish often swim onto the reef fish’s back and
lightly massage it with their fins.
Scientists reproduced this bizarre process in
Your class could get an
astronomy lesson from Brian Cox
the lab, using a fake cleaner fish. The dummy
fish was either kept still or timed to move
gently back and forth, so that the reef fish
could get a massage from it.
The fish that got a massage saw their
cortisol levels drop compared to the other
fish. Scientists now think that cleaner fish
have developed their massage technique to
make up for the times when they cheat at
their cleaning job.
Energy warning
the world is locking itself into a future
of inefficient energy use and high carbon
emissions, according to the International
Energy Agency (IEA).
The agency’s latest report into the global energy
supply was released this week. In the World Energy
Outlook, the IEA says that economic growth and rising
populations will continue to push up energy needs.
Unfortunately, governments are still relying on insecure
and environmentally harmful energy sources.
The IEA predicts that energy use will increase by a third
between now and 2035. Renewable energy sources are
predicted to increase from 13% of global supply today to
just 18% in 2035.
Renewable energy sources need more government
investment if they are to become more widespread and
efficient. However, the IEA says that in 2010, governments
put more than six times as much money into fossil fuels as
they did into renewables.
The report says that urgent action must be taken before
2017 to ensure that it
is not too late to turn
back. Scientists have
agreed that an increase
of 2°C in the average
world temperature
will lead to highly
damaging climate
change. To keep below
2°C will require action
from governments
around the world.
How the Phobos-Grunt probe should
have looked as it approached Mars
What goes up
as First News went to
press, the Russians were
desperately trying to make
contact with their Mars
probe, which is stuck in orbit
around Earth.
The Russian Federal Space Agency
(Roscosmos) launched the Phobos-
Grunt spacecraft on 8 November.
Unfortunately, once the craft
reached orbit and separated from its
launch rocket, the probe’s thrusters
failed to fire.
A Russian official said that the
agency has two weeks to try to fix
the problem, before the probe is
lost for good.
The spacecraft has two parts. One
was due to orbit Mars, while the
other was supposed to head to the
surface of the red planet’s largest
moon, Phobos. Once there, it would
take soil samples and return them to
Earth in a tiny rocket.
Latest reports suggest that
things aren’t looking good for the
mission, but check www.firstnews.
engineers figure out the problem.
SPECIAL REPORT
by Ellie Pearson from Brake
For more big issues, pictures and videos go to www.firstnews.co.uk/discover
Road Safety Week
21–27 November is Road Safety
Week, when people across the
UK take action to help make our
roads safer for everyone. Schools,
communities and organisations
take part by running activities to teach people how to use
roads safely, and to raise funds to help support people who
have been injured or lost a loved one in a road crash. The
event is coordinated by Brake, a national road safety charity.
Why road safety
matters
We all use roads. Whether it’s walking or
getting a bus to school, cycling to the park
or being driven to the shops by an adult,
these are all part of our everyday lives.
Brake is a charity that believes we should
all be able to use roads safely, without
being in danger. We especially believe kids
should be able to walk and cycle in their
neighbourhood, because it’s good for your
health, it doesn’t harm the environment like
driving does, and it’s fun.
Sadly, kids are often put in danger when
they use roads, perhaps because there
aren’t enough safe pavements and cycle
paths, or because the traffic goes too fast.
It’s terrible, but true, that some kids are
hurt or even killed when they use roads,
because it isn’t safe enough. Every day in
the UK 56 kids are hurt on roads, some of
them very badly.
Older teenagers also face big dangers
when they get old enough to start learning
Don’t let it be you
Road Safety Week
A campaign by Supported by Part of
Brake
stopping the carnage
supporting the victims
www.brake.org.uk
If you are old enough to ride in the
dark, make sure you can be seen
to drive, or if they get lifts with their friends
who drive. Young drivers are often involved
in terrible road crashes, because they
don’t have much driving experience, and
sometimes because they show off behind
the wheel.
What Brake is
doing
Brake knows we can stop road crashes
and prevent kids, teenagers and adults
getting hurt or killed.
We work to help schools teach road safety
to kids and teenagers, so you know what
you can do to keep yourself as safe
as possible.
We run campaigns telling drivers to drive
safely. We try to persuade drivers to never
drink and drive and never use a mobile
phone at the wheel. We tell them how
important it is for kids’ safety to slow down
to 20mph near schools and homes.
We also campaign for the authorities to
make roads safer, for example, by putting in
more crossings, safe pavements and cycle
paths, and more 20mph zones in towns
and villages.
Looking at your mobile phone while crossing
means you won’t see the car that hits you
Never cycle without your helmet
What you can do
Thousands of schools, community groups
and companies are taking action during
Road Safety Week. You can too.
So why not:
get your class or school to make a road
safety display, reminding kids how to
stay safe
ask your teacher to hold a non-uniform
day for Brake, where everyone wears bright
clothes to remind them to be bright, be
seen and to raise funds for Brake (a Brake
Bright Day!)
remind your parents not to speed, use a
phone when driving (even hands-free!) or
drink any alcohol before driving
make sure you know the Green Cross
Code, use it year-round, and remind your
friends to use it too. It could save a life.
Steven’s memory
Steven Atkinson was just 12 when he was
killed by a speeding young driver. Steven
was knocked off his bike while crossing
the road.
Steven’s mum, Violet, is supporting Road
Safety Week 2011 and calling for all drivers
to drive safely to help protect themselves
and other people.
ANIMAL NEWS
when little Okanda, a six-month-old gorilla, was
separated from his mother, zoo vet Sarah Chapman
took on the role of mum.
Poor Okanda’s mother could not provide enough nutrients
in her milk for him, so he began to get poorly. It was up to
zoo vet Sarah Chapman to take over and act as surrogate
mum for the gorilla.
In order for a successful reunion between mother and
son, Chapman has been instructed by Twycross Zoo,
Leicestershire, to impersonate his mother, by grunting at him
and grooming him whenever she handles him.
Luckily this strategy has been a success, and Okanda
is going from strength-to-strength, building up a strong
body and cheery personality.
When Okanda first arrived at the zoo’s hospital, he
was put on a drip and fed through a tube. Since then,
he has been fed powdered milk and, over the past
few days, been introduced to solid foods.
Swan asbos!
A swan in West Wales has been nicknamed
Hannibal by residents of Pembroke, after a reign of
terror that left 15 other birds dead and
dozens injured.
Hannibal and his partner, Mrs Hannibal, have lived with their
cygnet in Castle Pond by Pembroke Castle since February.
So, when other swans accidentally come into their territory
from the nearby Mill Pond, which is separated by a bridge and
barrage, Hannibal attacks them.
Maria Evans, a volunteer bird rescuer, said: “Mrs Hannibal
blocks off the escape routes while he attacks them. Then
they take the baby to view the kill, while mum and dad do a
triumphant, wings-up celebration.” When possible, Mrs Evans
rescues attacked birds and rehabilitates them in her rescue
centre. She has even applied for a licence from the Countryside
Council of Wales to have the swan family removed.
Kiwi stones
what a tummyache! The only known white
kiwi has had a big stone removed from her
stomach in New Zealand.
Tiny Manukura is a five-month-old rare white kiwi. She
was following her normal routine of swallowing the odd
small stone to help her digest her food, when she came
into a spot of bother.
When keepers at New Zealand’s Pukaha Mount Bruce
wildlife centre found that she had lost her appetite, they
thought they should investigate. They did a quick X-ray on
her stomach and found two stones that were far bigger
than the usual pea-sized ones.
Manukura managed to pass one by going to the loo,
but the second stone was just too big! Vets at Wellington
Hospital used lasers to break it up, before operating to
remove it.
Thankfully, this lucky young bird, who is a North Island
brown kiwi, is said to be recovering well after her ordeal.
Doggy drive
A LONELY dog, who hated being left alone while
his owners went out motorbiking, has been given
a novel way to be included in their hobby.
Harley, a 17-month-old St Bernard, travels with his owners
Alan and Tina Valkeith in the sidecar of their motorbike. They
decided to travel with him by their side, so that he wouldn’t
get lonely when they went out.
He wears a special doggy helmet, harness and goggles, so
that he is secure and protected from the wind and sun.
This solution came as Alan and Tina realised they could no
longer go out on their motorbikes together, as one of them
had to stay at home to keep Harley company.
“Buying the bike with a sidecar seemed like the ideal
solution,” Mr Valkeith said, “and Harley loves it!”

he’s still the old Po. He’s still a little clumsy,
wide-eyed, innocent and in awe of the other
kung fu masters. He’s learning and his powers
are getting stronger.
Where does the Kung Fu Panda 2
story begin?
It pretty much picks up where it ended in the
first movie. Po is the dragon warrior and works
with the Furious Five to keep the valley safe. The
new villain is a peacock!
A peacock doesn’t sound too sinister!
But, you see, this peacock has a new, powerful
weapon and his extremely evil plan is to destroy
kung fu and take over China. All of China! The
weapon is a cannon and it’s up to Po to save
everybody.
Po is always jumping around, throwing
punches and kicks. When you record the voice
are you jumping around?
Oh yes. I’m up bouncing around. It’s necessary
because you need your voice to match
Po’s physical presence on screen. The only
problem is my clothes sometimes make a
sound and because Po doesn’t wear clothes,
that’s a problem.
What do you like best, acting in live action
films or animated films?
I love both. They are both incredibly different.
Although animated films can take three or four
years to make, for the actor the process is kind
of shorter. What I mean is, when I go in to work
on an animated movie I’ll do six or seven scenes
in that one day. When you shoot a live action
movie, one day on set translates into, maybe, just
one or two minutes of the movie. Animated can
be a lot more satisfying.
Was it easy
to get back into Po’s fur
for the sequel?
Yes. That’s the advantage of
doing a sequel. You already know the character
you’re playing. You don’t need to waste time
creating the character. You just jump right in. You
also don’t have to set up the story as much. What I
like to say is, doing Kung Fu Panda 2 was like going
into your cupboard and finding a nice, old pair of
slippers and putting them on. It felt great.
Did you train in kung fu to prepare?
I did some kung fu training. I’m a lethal weapon.
I am a professional. I take this job very seriously.
I had a kung fu trainer. If you tried to attack me
right now I could defend myself. Maybe even do
some damage to you.
What do you think about more Kung Fu
Panda movies? How many sequels do you think
there should be?
I think we should probably stop at Kung Fu
Panda 263. We should do at least 200 of them.
No, my view is we should do more. As long as
we are making kick-ass movies we should keep
doing them.
TV, FILM, MUSIC AND THEATRE!
Movie car mayhem
TOP Gear favourite Richard Hammond talks to us about the brand new
Top Gear at the Movies DVD and all his favourite film cars.
Did you have a favourite stunt when
you were making the DVD?
Yes! It was probably when I had to
demonstrate which cars might be best for
escaping from baddies. I had to drive very
quickly through a course that we’d laid out,
while people fired at me from a selection
of paintball weapons, helicopters and
motorcycles and things. It was wonderful.
A lot of the time when you’re shooting
stunts like that, to be honest, there’s a
lot of standing around and then you do
something and it’s over. But, then, when
you watch it, it looks great. In this instance,
it was actually as much fun to do as it was
to watch.
It sounds a bit scary too!
Yes, we may or may not have one of the
motorcyclists fall off midway through! But
it was a little bit like when you go out and
play on your bicycle. When I was a kid I
grew up on a road with a little triangle of
green on it, where three roads intersected,
and we used to go round it on our bikes.
We’d play and play until it reached a certain
intensity and then somebody – usually me
– would fall off.
What was your favourite car to test?
The BMW1, but then there was the
new Noble M600. Ugly little brute, but
absolutely magnificent! It’s a race car with
a number plate, basically. And that was
tremendous. James and I decided that the
noise was very important for a Bond-type
car. So we worked through a whole load of
different vehicles – Lamborghinis, Porsches
– until we could find the one that could
make the best noise, so that was a
lot of fun!
What was the difference between a
goodie car and a baddie car?
Well, that’s what we enjoyed discussing. For
the baddie car, you could say it should have
a big, loud, grumbling V8. But then a V8 is a
big, simple engine. And, equally, you could
get a V12 and get that smooth, creamy
shriek going on, so it could be a hysterical,
furious baddie or it could suggest a goodie
trying to make a clean getaway. We enjoyed
a very long discussion about which ones
are the best and why!
Would you take on a Bond villain after
doing up the Budget Bond car?
I think James and I have proven that you
can build a Bond car on a budget! As long
as they attack only from one side, because
that’s all we could afford to armour. Or they
look at us from the other side, which James
managed to make invisible. And it works!
We covered the side of it with flatscreen
televisions and then put a camera on the
other side of the car, filmed what’s on the
other side of the car and then put that onto
the televisions on the other side of the car,
so that it effectively goes invisible. It sort of
works, it genuinely does! You can see or not
see the invisible car, which we’ll prove when
you watch it.
Did anything embarrassing happen
while filming?
There were some discussions as to whose
fault it was about the biker falling off.
Whether it was mine or another car.
Somebody span off the track and may, or
may not, have caused the bike to fall! I was
one of the people who did spin off the
track, but I maintain it wasn’t me – we’re all
steely-eyed professionals!
How about when you’re filming the TV series of
Top Gear? Anything embarrassing then?
There are too many! The good thing about Top Gear is
that if one of us suffers an embarrassing moment, that’s
not an outtake, that goes in the show!
What’s your favourite car chase scene or car scene
from a film?
You know, it probably is Bullitt, which the readers will
probably be too young to remember, way back in
ancient history. I’ve actually owned both the key cars
in it. A Mustang 390 GP, which is the same year and
model! But I’ve also previously had the 1968 Dodge
Charger, which was the baddies’ car in it.
If you could race against anyone in the world, who
would it be?
It probably would be Steve McQueen (who starred in
Bullitt). It would just be great fun. He did other things
as well, but he was just a very good driver. I do other
things as well and I’m not a very good driver!
So what’s next for you? When’s the new series of
Top Gear going to be on?
Well we’ve just got back from filming the Christmas
special for Top Gear a couple of days ago which may,
or may not, have been filmed in India! So that was
wonderful. And then we’re back on air
with Top Gear next year. We’re doing
another series of Total Wipeout, we’re
about to start recording that. So there’ll
be more of that to come.
the movie but was sadly outbid
The Wanted
The Wanted singer Max
to be an extra in Coronation
Keegan stars in the soap but
has reportedly banned him
YOUR NEWS
Travel reporter!
I was lucky enough to win the Minireporter
competition at LEGOLAND Discovery Centre.
by Aaron Hutchinson
To help with our design, I went with
Alex, the Master Model Builder from
LEGOLAND Discovery Centre to
MediaCityUK.
We looked round the different
buildings to decide which would be the
best to build out of LEGO. We decided
we would build the studios and use
transparent bricks so you could see
inside, and we could then build
different scenes.
When I had my second meeting with
Alex we looked at where the Media City
building would go in Miniland. We are
going to have to make a few changes to
Miniland so we can fit MediaCity in.
Then we looked at different kinds of
LEGO bricks to see which we thought
would be suitable to reconstruct the
MediaCity building. It was amazing to
think we could choose any LEGO brick
we wanted. Alex showed me how he used
his computer to help plan the design and
order the LEGO bricks.
I am very excited and looking forward
to the LEGO bricks arriving.
Charity running!
The Year 6 children at Harlands Primary School are
taking on their toughest challenge yet – running an
amazing 1,407km for charity.
by the pupils from Harlands Primary school
This year, the children are going to run a
whopping 1,407km in just 22 days!
This involves the Year 6 pupils running
at least 1km each day.
We are doing it because it is for an
incredible charity called Children In
Need. Children In Need helps thousands of
children every year who are going through
tough situations in life, such as an illness
that a family member might have or a lack
of a home or money.
An extremely generous pupil from Year 6
named Claudia said: “I’m not that keen on
running but I want to do it because it is for
a good cause.”
The substantial 1,407km sounds hard to
do in 22 days but we can do it together as a
year group.
We are lucky to benefit from the
use of the local sixth form college’s
field, which we have been running
around.
What is even more amazing is
that, even though two children are
on crutches with broken legs, they
are still participating.
One of these children said:
“I may be on crutches but the
children in need face more pain
than me.”
5 by 25 campaign
On Monday 17 October I was invited to the
launch of the 5 by 25 campaign hosted
by EBLEX (the people who promote Beef &
Lamb). The 5 by 25 campaign is aimed at
getting young people to know at least five
recipes off by heart by the age of 25.
by Sophie Moss
Among the many
supporters, James
Martin, a celebrity
cook, and the
Minister of skills,
John Hayes, were
involved in the
launch.
I was on the
panel, where at the
beginning and end
of the debates we were
asked questions.
To answer the
questions, you either
JUNIOR
JOURNALIST
James Martin, Lydia Gough
and Sophie Moss
had to put up a green apple or a red tomato, based
on the system of traffic lights.
The questions were based on our opinions – did
we think that young people were motivated to
improve skills?
Afterwards I interviewed both John Hayes and
James Martin. Can they both cook spaghetti
Bolognese? Apparently not, as John Hayes
says: “My wife cooks my meals, but I can make
quince jelly, though. I don’t like spaghetti
Bolognese, anyhow”. James Martin, however, was a
professional cook by the age of eight.
But why do they support this campaign? 21% of
18-25-year-olds said they hadn’t cooked at all in the
last seven days, and almost 60% can’t cook spaghetti
Bolognese. In fact, nearly all of those questioned
couldn’t even make any of the three recipes – spaghetti
Bolognese, curry or Yorkshire puddings.
The main reasons are they think it’s expensive,
boring and scary. It really isn’t.
Can you cook spaghetti bolognese?
THE BIG INTERVIEW
Vampire wedding
THE biggest film release this week is without a doubt The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn: Part 1.
First News chats to Robert Pattinson, who plays the famous vampire Edward Cullen, who finally
marries his human girlfriend Bella Swan!
Edward and Bella finally get married in this film and go
on a gorgeous honeymoon. What was it like to film that
scene in Brazil?
It was really amazing the day we got there, beautiful and
warm and everything you’d expect. Then, for the remainder
of the shoot, it was not only raining, but there were
hurricanes. It was like having a honeymoon in England,
where we were playing board games instead of hanging out
on the beach. Instead we were wrapped in blankets inside.
How did you prepare for Edward and Bella becoming
parents in this film? Did you draw on anything from your
own childhood?
Not really. No-one really knows how to be a father when
you first begin – there’s no way to prepare for it. And it’s very
easy to react to holding a baby, especially when the baby
looks like a newborn. It is strange when Mackenzie (Foy)
starts playing our daughter Renesmee, as you suddenly
have to think: “My daughter is now 11. It’s two months after
she is born and she can speak.” So that was a complicated
thing to play. But it’s a fantasy movie, so I guess you just go
along with it.
What was your favourite scene to film?
I think probably the birth scene. I never get to play Edward
in that way. Literally he is soul-baring his own helplessness
and is very frail and human. Normally he is either controlling
himself or is totally in control of a situation – or pretends he
is. He has no-one else around. He’s trying to help Bella but
he has no idea what he’s doing and he’s just desperate. And
normally when that happens in all the other movies Bella
comes in and saves the day, but someone else has to save
the day. He’s totally annihilated by the situation.
How about the most awkward scene to film?
Embarrassingly, the thing I was most worried about was
taking my shirt off. So much of the books are about Edward’s
body… I’ve managed to avoid taking my shirt off for the
whole series, whereas in the book it’s almost every three
pages. I was thinking: “How can I swim in a T-shirt?!” I don’t
even wear a T-shirt when I’m in the sea, I wear a onesie! I
look like an inflatable frankfurter!
You’ve finished filming the series now. How did you
find your last day on set?
The last day in Canada was semi-miserable. We did two
weeks of night shoots and it was freezing cold and it
was horrible. But the actual last day in St. Thomas, in the
Caribbean, was pretty amazing. The very last day was really
nice. In Canada, on that last day, there were 120 people on
that last scene, so it was stress right up until the last second
but, in the Caribbean, it was just me and Kristen. We had
done everything, we hardly had anything to shoot. It was
just a couple of extra bits, and so it was really nice and
everybody just stayed and watched the sunrise. It was really
beautiful. It was a nice end to it.
Edward and Bella finally get married in this film
Are you sad that it’s all over now?
I don’t know yet. I feel like I have been in a whirlwind for so
long that I don’t really know. I feel like I have been doing it
for years constantly, even though I have done other movies
in between. Whenever you do and promote or talk about
another movie, you’re always talking about Twilight, so it
Robert
Pattinson
is kind of constant. Maybe in a year or so. I know when the
last one has come out, it will be, but I know right now I have
another year of basically doing Twilight stuff.
Do you look forward to the hype all being over and you
can get back to doing other things?
Yes, but it’s always a good thing to have a bit of hype,
especially nowadays. But I don’t know. I will be interested to
see how people perceive me in a couple of years, because it
seems as though people have been talking about the same
stuff about me for about three years now, so I am wondering
how long that will go on for. But I don’t really know how to
predict anything.
What is the best thing that fame has brought you?
You just get to go down a completely different road. I am
living a life that I never really knew existed. You can delay
being an adult for quite a while. But it’s fun. You get to meet
really interesting people, and there are very few jobs where
almost everyone in the industry loves their job. It’s nice to
go to work every day when people are really excited about it
and think they are making something great.
The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn Part 1 is in cinemas
now, rated 12A. Some scenes may be unsuitable for very
young children.
Bird bonanza
MORE types of birds are visiting Britain’s gardens, thanks to people
putting out food for them to eat.
Garden bird feeders are attracting almost
50% more species than when your parents
were kids, according to the British Trust for
Ornithology.
Bird feeders are helping attract species such
as long-tailed tits, wood pigeons and greater
spotted woodpeckers. The BTO has been
carrying out its bird research for the past
41 years.
Other species that are visiting gardens more
than they used to are the magpie
and goldfinch.
But it’s not all good news. Some types of
bird are on the decline in Britain, including
the sparrow, starling and song thrush.
Back in the 1970s, the average garden was
visited by around 16 different types of bird.
That has risen to 23.
The BTO says the increase is due to people
putting out more bird food, and also a greater
variety of treats for different birds.
Have you spotted a greater
spotted woodpecker?
Fuelling takeaways and takeoffs
US airlines are going to unusual
lengths to cut their carbon emissions.
This week, a number of planes took to the
skies fuelled by a mixture of jet fuel, cooking oil
and algae.
United Continental was the first airline to
launch its ‘Eco Skies test flight’, using jet fuel and
algae to power a flight from Houston to Chicago.
Shortly after, Alaska Airlines announced it
would be running 75 flights on a jet fuel and
cooking oil mix. It said it also planned to use fast
food throwaways.
“A good mental reference is McDonald’s used
by Natalie Curtis
fryer grease”, said Robert Ames, vice president of
Dynamic Fuels, who make the mixture.
Alaska Airlines said the unusual oil mix could
cut greenhouse gas emissions on those flights by
10%. If the company could run all its flights on a
20% blend of the mixture, it would save as much
energy as powering 28,000 homes, or removing
64,000 cars from the road.
The mix costs six times more than normal jet
fuel, making a permanent switch very expensive.
It might also get a bit smelly too!
Alien life – ‘official’
announcement!
Warning!
Read all the
way to the end
of the story
RECORD OF
THE WEEK
three contortionists
in a box – duration
Skye Broberg, Nele and Jola Siezen climbed
into a box measuring 66.04 x 68.58 x 55.88
cm for 6 mins 13.52 seconds in Auckland,
New Zealand, on 20 September 2009
There is no
proof of alien life!
This is definitely not proof!
THE US Government has been forced to make a formal announcement about alien life here on Earth
and in space.
For years, aliens have featured
in movies and comics, and there
are plenty of people desperate to
believe they exist.
Humans have dreamed of
meeting aliens and forging a new
intergalactic partnership, based
on the shared values of freedom,
cheap travel in space, and the
Spanish graveyard
tells dead
residents to leave
by Ian Prince
chance of using a real ray gun!
But now (wait for it) the White
House says (don’t get too excited)
that there is definitely “no
evidence” that life exists outside
our planet. Also, there are no
aliens living and going to school
THEY were given a funeral and then laid to
rest for all eternity. Well, not quite…
The deceased in a graveyard in Zaragoza must be
turning in their graves because they face the threat
of eviction.
The owners of the graveyard say the dead will have
to leave their plots because the rent hasn’t been paid.
In Spain, people rent out plots for their relatives rather
than buy them. Due to a shortage of space, the owners are
cracking down on families who haven’t paid. Several remains
have already been moved to another less desirable
grave site.
That’s dead weird! Check out more stories at
www.firstnews.co.uk.
among us. Sorry about that,
conspiracy fans!
They had to make a statement
to answer a petition from 17,000
people. But they also said there
are trillions of stars in the universe
and so there might be a planet
with life. What do you think? Email
newsdesk@firstnews.co.uk.
So that’s a
no then…
Lizard hitches
ride to UK
did you know that creatures can end up in the
UK as stowaways in imported food?
The ride for one lizard started in Spain and ended
up at a wildlife park in England – travelling almost
1,600km on a bunch of grapes.
He was found among the supermarket fruit by
grandad Chris Divall, from Cambridge.
Chris was about to wash and tuck into his grapes
when he noticed something looking back at him.
Chris’s grandchildren Caitlin, eight, and Alfie, six,
gave their temporary pet the name Malcolm.
Chris said: “I was just thankful it wasn’t a spider.”
Malcolm is doing fine at the Shepreth Wildlife Park
in Hertfordshire. At the moment he’s just 5cm long,
but could eventually grow to around 80cm.
ASK ESTHER
With
thanks to
19
I’m Esther Rantzen, President of ChildLine, which helps 2,500 children
every week. If there’s something worrying you, please write to me at
the address below.
Grounded!
I have been grounded for a month, just because I
dyed my blonde hair brown. I think my parents have
completely overreacted. How can I get them to see this? Anna, 14
I can tell that you feel your parents are being unfair in grounding you for so long.
Sometimes parents make decisions for reasons that are unknown and it can be very
difficult to change the arrangement. Can I ask, have you spoken to your parents about
why they reacted this way? Remember, sometimes people do worry about things,
particularly parents. It would be beneficial if you find out why they feel that dying your
hair deserved a month’s grounding, to maybe help you understand. Do your parents
know you feel that it’s unfair? You can call ChildLine on 0800 11 11 to talk about it
more. Take care and I hope that you are able to sort something out with your parents.
No longer friends!
I have two friends that no longer like each other. I have been caught up in the
middle of their arguments for too long now and don’t want to be friends with either
of them anymore. How can I tell them to leave me alone?
It sounds like your friends are being
really unfair and not considering how you
feel as the one in the middle.
I wonder if they know you feel this
way because of how they are acting?
Maybe if they realised they may be more
mindful of you and your feelings. If you
really don’t want to be involved with
them anymore, you can tell them that
you feel it is unfair they are acting the
way they are and you don’t want to be
involved anymore. Maybe this will help
them realise what they are doing, as it is
possible they don’t notice. Arguments are
difficult and even more so when you are
stuck in the middle.
I hope you manage to get something
sorted with your friends. Take care.
How can I reduce the size and redness of my spots? There is a whole cluster
of them on my forehead. Is this normal?
Well, it’s not unusual when you are going
through puberty to notice that your skin is
breaking out in spots. It’s really important during
this time in your life to keep your skin and hair
clean, by using products that are suitable for
greasy hair and skin.
The first thing to do is find a skincare routine that is
suitable for teenage skin; there are lots on the market
and available in most supermarkets and chemists.
The second thing is to watch what you eat and
drink. Fizzy drinks, crisps and chocolate can all
contribute to spotty skin. So drink plenty of water
and eat lots of fresh vegetables.
All of this can prevent outbreaks of those
dreaded spots.
Pocket money dilemma
My parents have agreed to give me regular pocket money if I do some chores around the house.
I was thinking of asking for £20 a month and I will load the dishwasher each day, keep my room
clean and tidy, take the dog for a walk each day and clean the cars once a week. Do you think this is
fair? Ben,13
It’s good that you are able to do work around
the house for your parents, particularly if you are
earning something for it.
I think what’s important is, do you think that
it’s fair? If you are happy with it and your parents
agree then there is no reason why you shouldn’t
accept it. Money is always more enjoyable when
it has been earned and it does sound like you
are willing to do a few different things for your
parents. Well done! Take care.
and this week three classic characters are battling for
shoppers’ pennies.
First up is Super Mario 3D Land, the
first ever proper 3D adventure for the little
plumber. Gamers are still
undecided about whether
the 3DS is a novelty or a
great gadget, but the 3D
effect is amazingly useful
when you have to judge
distances for jumps in games like this.
Sometimes you don’t
know what’s going on,
but that’s part of the
fun. As the modern
Sonic, the game gets a
lot harder, and it’s often
a lot more fun to play
The game is a mix of old and new, with
some classic power-ups returning. If you
collect a Super Leaf you can kit Mario out
with a Tanooki suit, which lets him use
a tail-spin either as a way to glide across
gaps or to bash baddies. You can also grab
Fire Flowers or Boomerang Flowers to give
Mario flaming fireballs or a boomerang
weapon.
Libby says: “If you’ve not been sure about
asking for a 3DS for Christmas, then this
game gives you the reason to. It looks
amazing and plays brilliantly. It’s the best
3D game I’ve played by a
mile. I love Mario and this
10/10
game feels like they actually
want you to succeed – for
once!”
This year is Sonic’s 20th anniversary
and Sonic Generations is
SEGA’s latest attempt to
breathe some life back into
the character. Some of his
recent games haven’t got
great reviews, but this one
has had critics falling in
love with Sonic all over
again.
The plot involves time holes opening
up, which leads to Sonic coming across
a younger version of himself. That’s the
excuse for having old-school 2D levels with
the original Sonic, while modern Sonic
gets some funkier 3D levels to whizz about
in.
There’s more emphasis on classic Sonic
racing than there has been in recent
games, and fans will also get to see some
familiar levels in new ways.
Aaron says: “This has super high-tech
graphics and gets unbelievably fast.
as old Sonic. The re-made
levels are amazing fun, and 9/10
the high speed action is
great!.”
Nintendo have been getting their
money’s worth out of Kirby this year, but
the cute Kirby Mass Attack is a bit of a
change from the previous games.
The little pink dude has been split
into ten by the Skull Gang’s
boss, Necrodeus. You start off
with just one Kirby and have
to get more by eating fruit,
which you can get from trees
and bushes or by whacking
enemies and boxes.
Getting more Kirbys is key to success, as
there are certain obstacles and enemies
that need the extra weight or strength that
more Kirbys provide.
There are tonnes
of neat touches in
the game, like the
way a dead Kirby
will turn white and
start flying up to
heaven, giving you
a few crucial seconds to jump up and pull
him back down to earth.
Anya says: “This game is full of surprises.
The objective is to get stronger by getting
more Kirbys but,
like most games,
there are evil
characters
out to
stop you.
I found it
compulsive
and difficult
to put
down.”
THE BOOK CORNER
MY WAY CAMPAIGN
With thanks to
Book reviews www.
Even My Ears Are Smiling
Michael Rosen, illustrated by Babette Cole
reviewed by Daniel Pate, 8
This book has funny and exciting poems that really
make you think about what they mean. They show
emotions and how people behave and what we
should do with our lives. It’s excellent because even though it is funny,
there’s a serious bit in every poem. There are poems about people who
are happy, angry or sad. My favourite poem in the book was called
Today and it was about a lost dog. It’s a very good book, the illustrations are very realistic and
the humour is off the laugh-o-meter scale!
The Snow Merchant
Sam Gayton
reviewed by Olivia Trapnell, 11
This is a book about a girl called Lettie Peppercorn,
whose mother has vanished and whose only friend
is a pigeon called Periwinkle. Lettie must never leave
the inn or she fears she will turn to stone but, when a strange and
evil man comes to stay at the inn, her life begins to change. He brings
something no-one has ever seen before, snow, and he has been sent to
cover the outside world in it, but no-one knows why. It is at this point
a magical and terrifying adventure starts, Lettie discovers who she really is and finds a friend
she’ll never forget. I really loved the book and, despite how thick it was, I finished it the same
day it arrived. I would give this book a definite five out of five.
READING CHAMPIONS
Everyone knows a Reading Champion – they’re people
who inspire others to get reading. Each week, one of our
champions tells you a bit about their favourite reads and what they
think makes reading so appealing.
Name: Tom Percival
Tom writes and illustrates picture books as well as illustrating
books written by other people. The most well known of these
is probably the excellent Skulduggery Pleasant series by
Derek Landy.
What books did you read when you were a child?
I read absolutely masses as a child. I remember really enjoying
The Hobbit and The Dark is Rising. I always wished that I could
wake up in a magical snow-covered world, hundreds of years
in the past.
If you could be a storybook character, who would you be?
Will Stanton from The Dark is Rising perhaps, then at least I get my wish of travelling
back in time!
What is the best thing about reading?
It’s that you can instantly be transported to a different reality. You don’t need any
props, you don’t need to prepare, you don’t need to do it at a certain time, it’s entirely
on your terms.
What is your all-time favourite book?
I really don’t have one, it depends on what mood I’m in and what journey I want to go
on. The book that I’ve enjoyed most recently was A Monster Calls.
How important is reading in life?
Reading is hugely important in life. You can learn a huge amount, even from reading
fiction. Every character makes choices and their experiences can help inform any
decisions that you might have to make in your life.
Do you think you would make a good Reading Champion?
Ask your school to sign up today. www.readingchampions.org.uk
Be a My Way! star
FIRST NEWS has been running a campaign for a year called My Way!
It’s about getting people to understand that everybody learns in their
own way. For some people school is easy but, for others, it might be
harder. The important thing we want everybody to understand is
that the way you learn has nothing to do with how smart you are.
Around six children in each class have learning challenges, but that
doesn’t mean that they won’t be fantastically successful in whatever
they choose to do. As My Way! champion, Hank Zipzer author Henry
Winkler says: “Every child has brilliance inside them. Their job is to
dig it out and give it to the world.”
We would like YOU to star in this column. Write around 150 to 200 words about your
learning challenge and how you’re succeeding in spite of it, and send us a photo too.
HOW you learn is just as important as WHAT you learn and we want to hear from you.
Send your reports to newsdesk@firstnews.co.uk, putting My Way! in the subject box.
And THANK YOU!
London
wins
2017
london will host the athletics world championships in
2017, the first time that the tournament has ever been
held in the UK.
London’s bid to host the IAAF World Championships beat Qatar’s by 16
votes to ten.
“I am delighted and extremely proud that my colleagues on the IAAF
Council have entrusted London with the 2017 World Championships,”
said Lord Coe, the man in charge of the bid. “It will be such an honour
to host our sport’s showcase event in the Olympic Stadium and realise a
personal and professional dream.”
One of the things that persuaded people to vote for London’s bid was
the promise to pay for the whole £5m prize fund. The bid by Doha in
Qatar had included this promise, so the London team decided to match it
to get more votes.
Critics have said that the Olympic Stadium was a waste of money,
because it wouldn’t be used to host athletics events after the Olympics.
With the 2017 event confirmed, it is hoped that the stadium will now
become a new home for major athletics events in the UK.
Lord Coe (below) is also the chairman of the organising committee for
the 2012 Olympics. As a former athlete, he has been keen to see the UK
become a force in track and field events again.
bid
The Olympic Stadium in London. Right: Lord Coe shows
his delight as London is announced as the winner
know?
Did you
Lord Coe, when he was just
known as plain Sebastian
Coe, won two Olympic gold
medals in the 1,500m. He
also set 12 world records,
including breaking the world
record for the mile twice in
just nine days!
SPORT NEWS IN NUMBERS
15,048 is the
number of runs in Test cricket
that Sachin Tendulkar (right)
has scored. The ‘Little Master’
became the first person to pass
the 15,000 mark this week, as
India beat the West Indies.
47 runs is all that Australia
could manage in the second
innings of their Test match
against South Africa. It is
Australia’s fourth lowest Test
total ever, and their lowest
for 109 years. Their three
lowest totals all came against
England: 36 (Edgbaston, 1902),
42 (Sydney, 1888) and 44 (The
Oval, 1896).
2 hours 15 minutes and
25 seconds is the world
record marathon time
that Paula Radcliffe set in
2003 (right). Officials have
confirmed that the record
still stands, after threats
that it would not count as
an official world record.
Radcliffe set the time when
she was running with two
male athletes at the London
Marathon, and the IAAF
said that records would
only count if they were set
in single-sex races. Now
they say that old records
will still stand, but future
records will not count if
they come in mixed races.
3 is the number of
boxing matches that Manny
Pacquiao and Juan Manuel
Marquez have had. The first
was a draw, but Pacquiao
has won the last two, even
though many boxing fans
and experts think that
Marquez should have won
them both. Marquez said
that the decision in the
latest fight (right) was a
“robbery” and that he is
ready to give the sport up,
after two judges ruled that
Pacquiao had won. “I might
as well retire,” he said. “I
could knock him down and
they would pick him up and
give him the decision.”
