It’s practical, rigorous and
easy to follow – The Gold
Standard gives a good
name to the CDM and JI and
voluntary markets.
By closely following CDM and JI
procedures and with assessment taking
place at the same time as standard CDM/
JI processes, additional transaction costs
are kept to a minimum. For projects in
the voluntary sector, the Gold Standard
provides the only independent procedure
to develop premium quality projects and
ensures reductions are equally rigorous
and environmentally credible as in the
compliance market.
How do I follow The Gold
Standard?
• The Gold Standard is an instrument
for the carbon marketplace. Its project
documents and manuals of offering
guidance to project developers and
validators are available for downloading
from www.cdmgoldstandard.org.
• All you have to do is follow The Gold
Standard Project Design Document
(PDD). It covers all CDM / JI
requirements plus the three extra Gold
Standard screens; and in the voluntary
market provides a comprehensive
guideline on project design.
• The Gold Standard management is
available to assist developers in applying
of The Gold Standard methodology.
• Once your project design is complete,
you’ll need to contact your preferred
certifier (a UNFCCC-accredited
Designated Operational Entity DOE)
to validate compliance to The Gold
Standard in addition to the standard
CDM /JI requirements. For projects
targeting the voluntary market, the same
certifiers as for the CDM and JI are used
– ensuring a commensurate level of
quality for validation and verification.
• The certificate of the DOE stating that
The Gold Standard has been met will be
sufficient to demonstrate compliance. A
sample of projects will be independently
audited by The Gold Standard Technical
Advisory Committee to ensure that
validation and verification are being
consistently carried out to the highest
standards and that The Gold Standard’s
integrity is being maintained.
• To register your project with The Gold
Standard, simply submit a validated
The Gold Standard PDD and the
validation protocol to The Gold Standard
management and register your project in
The Gold Standard project database.
• Registered projects are awarded a
registered trademark label that allows
them to demonstrate The Gold Standard
compliance.
• It’s not too late to apply The Gold
Standard to projects you may already
have begun.
• Call your developer, auditor and
validator, and tell them to follow The
Gold Standard PDD. If in doubt,
you may contact the Gold Standard
management any time.

Additionality and Baseline Screen
The additionality and baseline screen is designed to ensure
that credits are only awarded to genuine emissions reductions
that would not have happened in the absence of the CDM/JI
or voluntary market contribution. In this way can increases in
emissions elsewhere be truly offset by CDM and JI projects
and host countries assured that the CDM and JI are bringing
them new investments.
Sustainable Development Screen
A project’s contribution to sustainable development is
assessed and ensured using three inter-linked procedures:
• An enhanced Environmental Impact Assessment procedure
• Stakeholder consultation at the outset and before
implementation that enables local concerns to be built into
project design
• A qualitative sustainability matrix – based on field-tested
indicators.
