9 th ORPHEUS Conference: An International Congress on PhD Education

Lausanne, Switzerland, April 3-5th 2014 at the University Hospital Center

Dear Delegate,

The Faculty of Biology and Medicine of the University of Lausanne is very pleased to present the 9 th ORPHEUS Conference: An

International Congress on PhD Education that will be held in Lausanne, Switzerland from the 3-5 th of April 2014.

ORPHEUS is the Organisation for PhD Education in Biomedicine and Health Sciences which includes around 80 biomedical

and health science faculties and institutions covering Europe. Since 2003, an annual Conference has been hosted in a

European city to discuss topics of major importance for PhD education, such as standards, quality indicators and clinical

PhD programs in an international context. The 9 th ORPHEUS congress will address three major issues which are bound to

shape postgraduate studies in the coming decade: Globalization, Interdisciplinary Research and Comprehensive Career

Nowadays, the career of researchers tends to be international: for example, in 2012, more than 68% of our PhD students

came from a country other than Switzerland and the trend is that these students then leave for a post-doctoral position

abroad. Global PhD standards are therefore a major issue that will be discussed during the congress by a panel of experts

on PhD education.

Interdisciplinary Research: From Bench to Bedside

The fact that research in Life Sciences is multidisciplinary needs to be taken in account when training the new generation

of researchers. Working in interdisciplinary networks at the interface of life sciences, medicine and humanities becomes

the prerequisite for an international career. Based on the strength of our experience in this field in the past decade, the

Faculty of Biology and Medicine is well placed to launch the debate on this key topic.

Comprehensive Career Opportunities

The program will include several partners from and outside academia to discuss their experience, expectations and

possibilities of collaborating toward PhD training. Additionally, a satellite workshop, intended for PhD students will be

organized, a so-called “Life Science Career Day” where scientists will share their professional experiences within academia,

industry and public institutions.

We thank you for participating in the 9 th edition of the ORPHEUS conference and we appreciate your active contribution to

the improvement of PhD education.

Faculty of Biology and Medicine of UNIL

The Faculty of Biology and Medicine (FBM) was created in

2003, by merging of the biology section of the former Faculty

of Science and the Faculty of Medicine. This combination

created a unique training in Switzerland that focuses

on Life Sciences.

Simultaneously, three schools were created: the School of

Biology, the School of Medicine and the Doctoral School.

The Schools of Biology and Medicine are responsible for

the Bachelor and Master level training and the Doctoral

School is responsible for the post-graduate training, i.e.

PhD, MD-PHD and MD.

Teaching in the disciplines of Biology and Medicine offers

also many possibilities for close collaboration between the

Faculty and the University Hospital Center.

University Hospital Center

The Centre hospitalier universitaire vaudois is the University

Hospital Center of the canton of Vaud. It is one of the

largest hospitals in Switzerland and has an international

reputation for excellence.

It functions as a general university hospital for people living

in the Lausanne area and serves also as a hospital offering

acute and specialist care for the whole population of the

district and the French-speaking Switzerland.

The University Hospital Center has a leading role in numerous

fields (burns, organ transplants, oncology, cardiovascular

disease, AIDS, ophthalmology, psychiatric neuroscience...).

It is also involved in research activities and clinical trials of

new therapies in Switzerland, Europe and the world.

In terms of education and research, the hospital has close

links with the Faculty of Biology and Medicine of the University

of Lausanne.

Date and Venue

We will organize this event on April, 3-5 2014 at the University

Hospital Center, Lausanne.
