Dear Nobles,<br />

I am honored that you honor me by allowing me to temporarily hold this office. Ricky and<br />

I are having a great time representing <strong>Al</strong> <strong>Malaikah</strong> <strong>Shrine</strong>. We have a simple theme this year;<br />

T.E.A.M. 2010, Together Everyone Achieves More. That teamwork was so evident at our<br />

<strong>Shrine</strong> Circus this year!<br />

What a great <strong>Shrine</strong> Circus! Live “Million Dollar Band” music put a bounce in everyones’ step.<br />

<strong>The</strong> aroma of popcorn and hotdogs in the air. <strong>The</strong> screams of delight as children swooshed<br />

down the Giant Slide. Koppers with pink facial hair as they spun cotton candy onto paper<br />

cones. Our <strong>Shrine</strong> Clowns opening the circus by running out into the crowd, throwing out<br />

colored balloons to the children.<br />

Teamwork was everywhere. I thank our Circus Committee and all of our nobles and their<br />

ladies who worked as a team to make our circus such a success. You, our nobility made this<br />

circus happen. Over 200 volunteers put forth a great effort to bring a quality circus to the<br />

children of our community. Because of your philanthropy, many disadvantaged children and<br />

children with special needs got to experience the thrill and excitement of attending a circus.<br />

Our Divan traveled to Tempe, Arizona to the Western <strong>Shrine</strong> Association to hear some great<br />

news. <strong>The</strong> Imperial Joint Boards voted to spend up to $181 million on a new hospital in<br />

Los Angeles! It will be at the L.A. County Medical Center/ U.S.C. Medical Center site off<br />

of the 5 freeway. Work should start before 2013. We can all thank our Hospital Chairman,<br />

Illustrious Sir Stuart Wright and his committee for their heroic efforts in making this new<br />

hospital possible<br />

Increasing our membership is still of supreme importance. Membership Chairman, Noble<br />

Rick Staunning tells us that we have to use a face to face approach... we can find candidates<br />

in our Blue Lodges. We need to meet these new Masons and tell them the <strong>Shrine</strong> Story. If we<br />

want to grow our <strong>Shrine</strong>, it starts with you. You must have personal contact with these new<br />

Masons. <strong>The</strong>y need to see us as a modern, fun group with a great philanthropy. Do your part.<br />

Attend your Blue Lodge and extend that hand of friendship.<br />

<strong>The</strong> <strong>Shrine</strong> Hospital System is one of the largest displays of Masonic charity<br />

in the world. Consisting of 22 hospitals for children, <strong><strong>Shrine</strong>r</strong>s Hospitals have<br />

been providing free operations for children for nearly 100 years. This specialized<br />

hospital system for children works in the areas of orthopedics, burns, burn<br />

reconstruction, plastic surgery, cleft lip and palate and spinal cord injury.<br />

<strong><strong>Shrine</strong>r</strong>s Hospital - Los Angeles also provides prosthetic devices for children<br />

who, for whatever reason, have lost hands, arms or legs. <strong>The</strong> Los Angeles hospital<br />

takes care of children from New Mexico, Arizona, Southern Nevada, Southern<br />

California, Northern Mexico and around the world.<br />

For the past few years we have been in a bit of a flux as to how we were going<br />

to make our hospital in Los Angeles earthquake proof for the California<br />

requirements of 2013 and beyond. Rumor has been heard that we might close<br />

our hospital. Other rumors said we might turn the hospital into a day clinic.<br />

Still other rumors said that we would spend the money necessary to retrofit<br />

the current 55 year old building. Today, after a lot of work by the Los Angeles<br />

Hospital Board of Governors, and Chairman Stu Wright, the decision has<br />

been finalized! WE ARE BUILDING A BRAND NEW, FULL-SERVICE,<br />

HOSPITAL IN LOS ANGELES COUNTY!<br />

<strong>The</strong> new hospital will be located at the corner of I-5 and I-10, with an excellent<br />

view by hundreds of thousands of people traveling both of those freeways each<br />

day! This will be located on the new LA County/USC Heath Care Campus.<br />

For the next year, we will be working with architects. After that point we should<br />

be able to break ground and commence construction. It has taken a long road<br />

to get to this point, and we have a very long road to the cutting of the ribbon<br />

and the admissions of our first patient to the new hospital, but rest assured, it<br />

is being worked on by our Board Members. This will be a very costly effort to<br />

complete in approximately 5 years. Believe me when I say it will be worth it as<br />

we have approximately 4,000 children from Southern Nevada currently enrolled<br />

as patients of this hospital. Many thousands more from our community have<br />

benefited from this hospital in the past.<br />

Hello Nobles,<br />

I would like to thank everyone who helped at the circus. It was another great successful<br />

<strong>Shrine</strong> circus. <strong>The</strong> hard work of <strong>Al</strong> Lamoi, Gerry Petievich, the circus committee and all<br />

the Nobles did a great job.<br />

<strong>The</strong> first circus <strong>Al</strong> Mailaikah ever did was in 1907. It was to raise money for the 1907<br />

Imperial Session in Los Angeles. <strong>The</strong> hundreds of thousands of children thanks each and<br />

every Nobles who has helped to support the <strong>Shrine</strong> circus over the many years. <strong>The</strong> nobles<br />

that preceded us put a lot love, sweat and fun to make <strong>Al</strong> <strong>Malaikah</strong> the best.<br />

So each noble of the mystic shrine needs to remember them and come out to our events<br />

and see what you have been missing. <strong>The</strong> one event that you will enjoy is the Lobster fest.<br />

Last year we had 140 people attend and they all plan on attending this year.<br />

<strong>The</strong> date is September 12th in the Expo hall at the <strong>Shrine</strong> Auditorium. Put the date down<br />

on your calendar, if you LOVE lobster you will not want to miss it.<br />

Over the past several years, Lady Paula and I have visited several <strong>Shrine</strong> Clubs in <strong>Al</strong><br />

<strong>Malaikah</strong>’s jurisdiction which ranges in the South from San Diego County to Paso Robles<br />

in the North and from the Coast in the West to Palm Springs. <strong>The</strong>re are 9 Units and 40<br />

<strong>Shrine</strong> clubs in our jurisdiction with a variety of programs and functions for all Nobles<br />

and their Ladies to enjoy.<br />

Our first ceremonial of the year is now complete and 23 new Nobles were initiated in<br />

Laughlin, NV. To those new Nobles, I say get active, get on the TEAM. <strong>The</strong>re is a <strong>Shrine</strong><br />

Club near you, find out what is going on and come out to support them. <strong>The</strong>y all need<br />

your help to survive these tough times. If you would like the name and location of a club<br />

I’ve been cruising a few <strong><strong>Shrine</strong>r</strong>s websites lately and wanted to share some of the information<br />

I’ve found. You know, our newer Nobles are quite accustomed to browsing the web and finding<br />

all sorts of useful things on various websites. It’s second nature to them. In fact, that is what<br />

is bringing in a significant number of new Masons and Nobles. But some of us are not as<br />

comfortable with that technology and don’t make as much use of it as we might. For myself, I<br />

generally use it when I have to for business or research. But, once in a while, I do it for no special<br />

reason and I find all sorts of interesting things.<br />

For now, I will concentrate on <strong><strong>Shrine</strong>r</strong>s websites. I hope everyone is familiar with our own <strong>Al</strong><br />

<strong>Malaikah</strong> website, www.almalaikah.com. This is a remarkable site, developed and maintained<br />

by Noble Mark Elliot, 1st Ceremonial Master. This is where you will find information relating<br />

to <strong>Al</strong> Maliakah’s history, members, clubs, units, the divan and, especially, events. Updates are<br />

continually made to refresh the calendar and flyers for upcoming events. You can also find links<br />

to other important <strong>Shrine</strong> interests, such as the Imperial website and the Los Angeles <strong><strong>Shrine</strong>r</strong>s<br />

Hospital for Children website. <strong>The</strong>re is also updated information on sick Nobles and their<br />

families, as well as announcements of Nobles who have passed away. You can explore links to<br />

our <strong>Shrine</strong> units and clubs. You can find applications for membership and forms for ordering<br />

<strong>Shrine</strong> apparel. I try to check our website weekly for new information. You can also find the <strong>Al</strong><br />

<strong>Malaikah</strong>an magazine on the website. That is great if you are looking up something and don’t<br />

happen to have a hard copy handy.<br />

<strong>The</strong>re are two other websites that have recently been modernized. <strong>The</strong> <strong><strong>Shrine</strong>r</strong>s Village (members<br />

benefits) and Be a <strong><strong>Shrine</strong>r</strong> Now (membership), both maintained by Imperial. <strong>The</strong>se two sites may<br />

also be accessed from links on the <strong>Al</strong> <strong>Malaikah</strong> website home page. www.shrinersvillage.com is<br />

a “private web community for <strong><strong>Shrine</strong>r</strong>s.” You now need your membership number (found on<br />

your annual dues card) to fully access this site. It has information on the fraternity, sports, events,<br />

news, the hospitals, membership and shopping. In the shopping category, you will find <strong>Shrine</strong><br />

Savers, the official member benefit program (exclusive benefits and services for Nobles, their<br />

families, businesses and <strong>Temple</strong>s). You can also find <strong>Shrine</strong> logo merchandise and links to benefit<br />

activities such as the Rhythm on the Vine series and the Justin Timberlake <strong><strong>Shrine</strong>r</strong>s Hospital for<br />

Children Open.<br />

www.beashrinernow.com is the Imperial’s membership website. It has several short introductory<br />

videos regarding the <strong>Shrine</strong>’s history, philanthropy, and membership benefits. It also features<br />

an opportunity for prospective candidates to contact a virtual member, as well to volunteer to<br />

become a virtual mentor. Virtual mentors are paired with candidates with similar interests in<br />

your area and allows you to share with him your knowledge and enthusiasm about Masonry<br />

and about being a <strong><strong>Shrine</strong>r</strong>. Noble Rick Stauning, our Membership Committee Chairman<br />

has already receiving requests for virtual mentors from this site. Current events are described,<br />

including <strong><strong>Shrine</strong>r</strong>s Awareness Week (June 6 – 12). If nothing else, check out the suggestions in<br />

the Awareness Week.<br />

This just scratches the surface of what is available on-line for <strong><strong>Shrine</strong>r</strong>s. If you don’t have your own<br />

computer, you may be able to get on-line from a public access computer at the County or City<br />

library. But please check it out. You will get a lot out of it.<br />

Hospital Update<br />

<strong><strong>Shrine</strong>r</strong>s Hospital for Children • April 2010<br />

<strong>The</strong> status of the PICU at SHC–LA is that we are working on it as we speak. <strong>The</strong> architects are<br />

meeting regularly not only with the staff but with our folks in Tampa and getting plans to OSHPD<br />

for approval. <strong>The</strong> OSHPD have determined that this is a “new” construction versus a “renovation”<br />

as we called it and hence has placed before us an increase in sizing of the space. This then is causing<br />

some delays but it is being dealt with by all parties. Some expressed concern and wondered why we<br />

would proceed with the PICU at our current location when a new building is in the cards. <strong>The</strong>re<br />

are several reasons why it is necssary at this stage. First is the safety concern. If something goes amiss<br />

and it seldom does we may not have time to transport a child to another facility. Second, our new<br />

hospital can not be finished until at least 2016, and that’s a long way off. Thirdly, donations always<br />

enter the picture and this is a major issue and forth we need this PICU for the hiring of doctors and<br />

the continuation of the residency programs we have now and will need in the future<br />

While we are delighted to finally have the vote of the joint boards to erect a new hospital on the site<br />

of LA County/USC medical center, there are some critical matters we still need to face.<br />

LA County has not totally agreed to still provide the land and there is the 2013 deadline we continue<br />

to face. We are working diligently in both of areas and continue to be positive. <strong>The</strong>re are some<br />

stipulations with the joint boards decision which include the cap for construction as $181 million,<br />

that no monies for contruction will be available until 2014 and of course we need to have the lease/<br />

option agreed to by LA County. Much has yet to be done but all is in progress every day.<br />

Where does the time go! It is already the month of May, our Circus is a past memory, but<br />

what a Circus we had approx 36,000. Parents and children during our 3 day run, “my Fez<br />

off” to our Potentate and his Circus committee for a job well done!<br />

Sure some mistakes were made but let us at least thank them for all the success, could you or<br />

I do better then the answer my friend, volunteer to be part of the committee next year. We<br />

Nobles are really hard on each other, at times you’re damned if you do and others damned<br />

if you don’t.<br />

Membership is becoming a real problem in our <strong>Temple</strong>, when I became a <strong><strong>Shrine</strong>r</strong> I was<br />

informed that I had to at least bring in one new petition a year, just think if we could<br />

accomplish this our membership would be in the high thousands, unfortunately that has<br />

not happened.<br />

We can all listen to the old stories of when we had 20,000. Plus membership, but let us come<br />

back to present day we need at least 300 new members a year for us to survive, so let’s get<br />

out to lodge and set the wheels in motion to get new candidates, we can do it! I have faith in<br />

every Noble of this <strong>Temple</strong> ,1 new member from each of us would increase our membership<br />

100% can we do it” YES WE CAN”<br />

Enough talk let get to it! Our next Ceremonial is in Bakersfield. 150 new members are<br />

possible, let’s show the fraternity <strong>Al</strong> <strong>Malaikah</strong> puts Action not Words to work.<br />
