Pote’s Notes
Joseph Stouch
Illustrious Potentate
Dear Nobles,
I am honored that you honor me by allowing me to temporarily hold this office. Ricky and
I are having a great time representing Al Malaikah Shrine. We have a simple theme this year;
T.E.A.M. 2010, Together Everyone Achieves More. That teamwork was so evident at our
Shrine Circus this year!
What a great Shrine Circus! Live “Million Dollar Band” music put a bounce in everyones’ step.
The aroma of popcorn and hotdogs in the air. The screams of delight as children swooshed
down the Giant Slide. Koppers with pink facial hair as they spun cotton candy onto paper
cones. Our Shrine Clowns opening the circus by running out into the crowd, throwing out
colored balloons to the children.
Teamwork was everywhere. I thank our Circus Committee and all of our nobles and their
ladies who worked as a team to make our circus such a success. You, our nobility made this
circus happen. Over 200 volunteers put forth a great effort to bring a quality circus to the
children of our community. Because of your philanthropy, many disadvantaged children and
children with special needs got to experience the thrill and excitement of attending a circus.
Our Divan traveled to Tempe, Arizona to the Western Shrine Association to hear some great
news. The Imperial Joint Boards voted to spend up to $181 million on a new hospital in
Los Angeles! It will be at the L.A. County Medical Center/ U.S.C. Medical Center site off
of the 5 freeway. Work should start before 2013. We can all thank our Hospital Chairman,
Illustrious Sir Stuart Wright and his committee for their heroic efforts in making this new
hospital possible
Increasing our membership is still of supreme importance. Membership Chairman, Noble
Rick Staunning tells us that we have to use a face to face approach... we can find candidates
in our Blue Lodges. We need to meet these new Masons and tell them the Shrine Story. If we
want to grow our Shrine, it starts with you. You must have personal contact with these new
Masons. They need to see us as a modern, fun group with a great philanthropy. Do your part.
Attend your Blue Lodge and extend that hand of friendship.
“T.E.A.M. 2010, Together Everyone Achieves More”
Fraternally yours,
Hail to the Chief
Sam Pitassi
Good News
Chief Rabban
The Shrine Hospital System is one of the largest displays of Masonic charity
in the world. Consisting of 22 hospitals for children, Shriners Hospitals have
been providing free operations for children for nearly 100 years. This specialized
hospital system for children works in the areas of orthopedics, burns, burn
reconstruction, plastic surgery, cleft lip and palate and spinal cord injury.
Shriners Hospital - Los Angeles also provides prosthetic devices for children
who, for whatever reason, have lost hands, arms or legs. The Los Angeles hospital
takes care of children from New Mexico, Arizona, Southern Nevada, Southern
California, Northern Mexico and around the world.
For the past few years we have been in a bit of a flux as to how we were going
to make our hospital in Los Angeles earthquake proof for the California
requirements of 2013 and beyond. Rumor has been heard that we might close
our hospital. Other rumors said we might turn the hospital into a day clinic.
Still other rumors said that we would spend the money necessary to retrofit
the current 55 year old building. Today, after a lot of work by the Los Angeles
Hospital Board of Governors, and Chairman Stu Wright, the decision has
been finalized! WE ARE BUILDING A BRAND NEW, FULL-SERVICE,
HOSPITAL IN LOS ANGELES COUNTY!
The new hospital will be located at the corner of I-5 and I-10, with an excellent
view by hundreds of thousands of people traveling both of those freeways each
day! This will be located on the new LA County/USC Heath Care Campus.
For the next year, we will be working with architects. After that point we should
be able to break ground and commence construction. It has taken a long road
to get to this point, and we have a very long road to the cutting of the ribbon
and the admissions of our first patient to the new hospital, but rest assured, it
is being worked on by our Board Members. This will be a very costly effort to
complete in approximately 5 years. Believe me when I say it will be worth it as
we have approximately 4,000 children from Southern Nevada currently enrolled
as patients of this hospital. Many thousands more from our community have
benefited from this hospital in the past.
Hello Nobles,
I would like to thank everyone who helped at the circus. It was another great successful
Shrine circus. The hard work of Al Lamoi, Gerry Petievich, the circus committee and all
the Nobles did a great job.
The first circus Al Mailaikah ever did was in 1907. It was to raise money for the 1907
Imperial Session in Los Angeles. The hundreds of thousands of children thanks each and
every Nobles who has helped to support the Shrine circus over the many years. The nobles
that preceded us put a lot love, sweat and fun to make Al Malaikah the best.
So each noble of the mystic shrine needs to remember them and come out to our events
and see what you have been missing. The one event that you will enjoy is the Lobster fest.
Last year we had 140 people attend and they all plan on attending this year.
The date is September 12th in the Expo hall at the Shrine Auditorium. Put the date down
on your calendar, if you LOVE lobster you will not want to miss it.
Over the past several years, Lady Paula and I have visited several Shrine Clubs in Al
Malaikah’s jurisdiction which ranges in the South from San Diego County to Paso Robles
in the North and from the Coast in the West to Palm Springs. There are 9 Units and 40
Shrine clubs in our jurisdiction with a variety of programs and functions for all Nobles
and their Ladies to enjoy.
Our first ceremonial of the year is now complete and 23 new Nobles were initiated in
Laughlin, NV. To those new Nobles, I say get active, get on the TEAM. There is a Shrine
Club near you, find out what is going on and come out to support them. They all need
your help to survive these tough times. If you would like the name and location of a club
Getting High
David Chernik
High Priest & Prophet
Fellow Nobles,
I’ve been cruising a few Shriners websites lately and wanted to share some of the information
I’ve found. You know, our newer Nobles are quite accustomed to browsing the web and finding
all sorts of useful things on various websites. It’s second nature to them. In fact, that is what
is bringing in a significant number of new Masons and Nobles. But some of us are not as
comfortable with that technology and don’t make as much use of it as we might. For myself, I
generally use it when I have to for business or research. But, once in a while, I do it for no special
reason and I find all sorts of interesting things.
For now, I will concentrate on Shriners websites. I hope everyone is familiar with our own Al
Malaikah website, www.almalaikah.com. This is a remarkable site, developed and maintained
by Noble Mark Elliot, 1st Ceremonial Master. This is where you will find information relating
to Al Maliakah’s history, members, clubs, units, the divan and, especially, events. Updates are
continually made to refresh the calendar and flyers for upcoming events. You can also find links
to other important Shrine interests, such as the Imperial website and the Los Angeles Shriners
Hospital for Children website. There is also updated information on sick Nobles and their
families, as well as announcements of Nobles who have passed away. You can explore links to
our Shrine units and clubs. You can find applications for membership and forms for ordering
Shrine apparel. I try to check our website weekly for new information. You can also find the Al
Malaikahan magazine on the website. That is great if you are looking up something and don’t
happen to have a hard copy handy.
There are two other websites that have recently been modernized. The Shriners Village (members
benefits) and Be a Shriner Now (membership), both maintained by Imperial. These two sites may
also be accessed from links on the Al Malaikah website home page. www.shrinersvillage.com is
a “private web community for Shriners.” You now need your membership number (found on
your annual dues card) to fully access this site. It has information on the fraternity, sports, events,
news, the hospitals, membership and shopping. In the shopping category, you will find Shrine
Savers, the official member benefit program (exclusive benefits and services for Nobles, their
families, businesses and Temples). You can also find Shrine logo merchandise and links to benefit
activities such as the Rhythm on the Vine series and the Justin Timberlake Shriners Hospital for
Children Open.
www.beashrinernow.com is the Imperial’s membership website. It has several short introductory
videos regarding the Shrine’s history, philanthropy, and membership benefits. It also features
an opportunity for prospective candidates to contact a virtual member, as well to volunteer to
become a virtual mentor. Virtual mentors are paired with candidates with similar interests in
your area and allows you to share with him your knowledge and enthusiasm about Masonry
and about being a Shriner. Noble Rick Stauning, our Membership Committee Chairman
has already receiving requests for virtual mentors from this site. Current events are described,
including Shriners Awareness Week (June 6 – 12). If nothing else, check out the suggestions in
the Awareness Week.
This just scratches the surface of what is available on-line for Shriners. If you don’t have your own
computer, you may be able to get on-line from a public access computer at the County or City
library. But please check it out. You will get a lot out of it.
Yours in the faith,
Hospital Update
Shriners Hospital for Children • April 2010
The status of the PICU at SHC–LA is that we are working on it as we speak. The architects are
meeting regularly not only with the staff but with our folks in Tampa and getting plans to OSHPD
for approval. The OSHPD have determined that this is a “new” construction versus a “renovation”
as we called it and hence has placed before us an increase in sizing of the space. This then is causing
some delays but it is being dealt with by all parties. Some expressed concern and wondered why we
would proceed with the PICU at our current location when a new building is in the cards. There
are several reasons why it is necssary at this stage. First is the safety concern. If something goes amiss
and it seldom does we may not have time to transport a child to another facility. Second, our new
hospital can not be finished until at least 2016, and that’s a long way off. Thirdly, donations always
enter the picture and this is a major issue and forth we need this PICU for the hiring of doctors and
the continuation of the residency programs we have now and will need in the future
While we are delighted to finally have the vote of the joint boards to erect a new hospital on the site
of LA County/USC medical center, there are some critical matters we still need to face.
LA County has not totally agreed to still provide the land and there is the 2013 deadline we continue
to face. We are working diligently in both of areas and continue to be positive. There are some
stipulations with the joint boards decision which include the cap for construction as $181 million,
that no monies for contruction will be available until 2014 and of course we need to have the lease/
option agreed to by LA County. Much has yet to be done but all is in progress every day.
Where does the time go! It is already the month of May, our Circus is a past memory, but
what a Circus we had approx 36,000. Parents and children during our 3 day run, “my Fez
off” to our Potentate and his Circus committee for a job well done!
Sure some mistakes were made but let us at least thank them for all the success, could you or
I do better then the answer my friend, volunteer to be part of the committee next year. We
Nobles are really hard on each other, at times you’re damned if you do and others damned
if you don’t.
Membership is becoming a real problem in our Temple, when I became a Shriner I was
informed that I had to at least bring in one new petition a year, just think if we could
accomplish this our membership would be in the high thousands, unfortunately that has
not happened.
We can all listen to the old stories of when we had 20,000. Plus membership, but let us come
back to present day we need at least 300 new members a year for us to survive, so let’s get
out to lodge and set the wheels in motion to get new candidates, we can do it! I have faith in
every Noble of this Temple ,1 new member from each of us would increase our membership
100% can we do it” YES WE CAN”
Enough talk let get to it! Our next Ceremonial is in Bakersfield. 150 new members are
possible, let’s show the fraternity Al Malaikah puts Action not Words to work.
