Marg opened the meeting welcoming everyone.<br />

A motion to accept the minutes of the May meeting as<br />

published in the <strong>Clarion</strong> was made by Barry, seconded<br />

by Karen. There were 20 Chairpersons, 6 Executive<br />

and 2 staff members in attendance.<br />

BUSINESS ARISING FROM THE MINUTES<br />

(a) Queen’s Jubilee Tea - Marg<br />

June 30th - get tickets at the office.<br />

(b) Heart to Art Project - Marg<br />

We applied for a grant to New Horizon’s last year and<br />

we have officially received it. It is an intergenerational<br />

project and covers 5 different areas: spoken word,<br />

mosaic, performance theatre, digital photography and<br />

music. Applications for professional artists are available<br />

as are application forms for senior and youth apprentices.<br />

If anyone is interested, leave your name at<br />

the office and interviews will probably be held in <strong>July</strong>.<br />

Public workshops will be in October or November and<br />

a final gala in March of April of 2013. The theme is<br />

“Making the world a better place through art”.<br />

(c) <strong>Century</strong> <strong>House</strong> branding update - Laura<br />

Approximately 1 year ago we started a discussion<br />

around rebranding and tagnames. A meeting was<br />

held with Blair Fryer and Jason Haight where we discussed,<br />

what is rebranding? A working group has<br />

been formed to prepare us for a future meeting with<br />

Hyack Interactive.<br />

(d) Restoration work update - Lesley<br />

The pottery room is up and running however the Multipurpose<br />

room and exercise room still need further<br />

inspection before wall repair is done. Lesley thanked<br />

everyone for their patience during this time.<br />

Craft Sale and Tea Date - Saturday, November 3, <strong>2012</strong><br />

ACTIVITY REPORTS<br />

BURSARY - Linda Josephison<br />

Very busy month - Pancake breakfast and Music of the<br />

Night. Both a very big success! We selected our 10<br />

finalists and interviewed them and then chose our three<br />

bursary winners. We will be presenting them with their<br />

$500.00 bursaries at the award ceremony.<br />

BOOK CLUB - Marion Orser<br />

CENTURY HOUSE SINGERS - Caryle Neronovich<br />

<strong>CH</strong> Singers have completed their final program of the<br />

2011-<strong>2012</strong> season with a combined performance with<br />

the Ukulele group at the May birthday party (3 members<br />

of the <strong>CH</strong> Singers are also Ukulele players). We<br />

had our final get together at our favourite place, The<br />

Waffle <strong>House</strong>. We will resume practice September 10.<br />

CERAMICS - Betty Dockerill<br />

Unfortunately the flood had a direct impact on us so<br />

we had 3 weeks of no access. Kudos to the staff for<br />

pushing to get us back as soon as it was safe. We<br />

have an exciting new program that will run for 4 weeks<br />

starting June 26.<br />

Our crowds are down a little for some unknown reason,<br />

we see a few new faces every Sunday. On Mother’s<br />

Day all mothers got a carnation which they loved.<br />

Only 4 more dances and we will be off for the summer.<br />

Our last dance will be Hawaiian.<br />

DARTS - Alice Robson<br />

Have discussed arranging another date in addition to<br />

our regular Thursdays should our attendance exceed<br />

8 members.<br />

Our annual Strawberry Tea is next Tuesday (June 12th)<br />

HEALTH DROP-IN - Sheilla Foster<br />

We’re having a Strawberry Tea on June 14th.<br />

Five sympathy cards and three get well cards sent and<br />

one hospital visit made. I regret to report the deaths<br />

of Hans Langer, Christine Leary, Ed Chambers and<br />

Robert Boston.<br />

LOW VISION - Helen Hughan<br />

Our guest speaker was Eve Silverman from Ageright<br />

consultants who gave us a lively and informative talk<br />

on Advocacy for Seniors. A good discussion and<br />

questions followed.<br />

MAHJONG - Luna Acedillo<br />

Our Mother’s Day celebration went well. The moms each<br />

received a red long stemmed rose and everyone enjoyed<br />

the delicious snacks, the main feature was a rhubarb/<br />

strawberry coffee cake. The group surprised Luna for<br />

her birthday. She was given a white orchid plant and a<br />

pot of mums. Next event will be Father’s Day.<br />

MEMORY CORNER - Bev Martin<br />

The case is filled with souvenirs of events that have<br />

happened during Queen Elizabeth’s reign. Next theme<br />

will be unusual candlesticks, which will go in on <strong>July</strong> 6<br />

for the summer.<br />

PAINTING FOR PLEASURE - Susan Tamkin<br />

The watercolor group had a session in Moody Park<br />

and this was really enjoyed by those who participated.<br />

PARKINSON’S - Kathy Denton<br />

Had 5 new people. Gillian led a great work out for the<br />

group. We nominated 3 new co-chairs, Kathy, Penny<br />

and Harvey. One more meeting before a two month<br />

break and restart in September.<br />

PICKLEBALL - Carol Koverchuk<br />

We are now playing at Westburnco Park - outdoor<br />

court on Monday and Thursdays from 10:00 am until<br />

2:00 pm depending on weather and player turnout.<br />

Those that have used the courts are finding playing<br />

outdoors most enjoyable.<br />

QUILTERS - Hermila Becker<br />

We welcome our new member Julie Lee.<br />

SENIOR PEER COUNSELLING - Karen Mackenzie<br />

Peer Counselling ends June 27 and returning September<br />

19. Coverage is available by calling Senior Peer<br />

Counselling or Main office. We are looking forward to<br />

the graduation of 12 new Counsellors in September.<br />

THEATRE OUTINGS - Joy McLean<br />

Our last meeting was June 5 - the club has disbanded.<br />

Whoever wishes will meet the first Tuesday of each<br />

month at the Moonraker’s Pub at 11:30 am for lunch &<br />

theatre talk.<br />

UKULELE GROUP - Shirley Miller<br />

June 14 - Strawberry Social and Tea with the Health<br />

Drop-In will be our highlight for the month of June. We<br />

hope to see more people out for our summer Jam Sessions<br />

“Unplugged” schedule for <strong>July</strong> 4 and August 1.<br />

UPTOWN ARTISTS DROP-IN - Barbara Hilstad<br />

‘Drop-in’ with your art work any Thursday during the<br />

summer. Try something new using our cupboard of<br />

supplies.<br />

Attendance and Financial reports were also received<br />

from Bingo, Canasta, Carpet Bowlers, Bridge,<br />

Creative Writing, Cribbage, Drama, Games Room,<br />

Scrabble, Soapstone, Social Bridge, Table Tennis,<br />

Tuesday Crafts, Wednesday Crafts, Court Whist, Walking<br />

Group and Whist.<br />

Laura - Reminder about signing up on the <strong>Century</strong><br />

<strong>House</strong> website and receive e-mails. We are up to 60<br />

and our 40 away from our goal of 100.<br />

Annette - Everyone welcome to the next SPAN meeting<br />

which is June 13 from 1:00 to 3:00 pm.<br />

Shelly - Any activity groups that will be meeting in<br />

summer need to give dates to Shelly.<br />

CLUB NEWS<br />

PARKINSON’S SELF HELP GROUP<br />

Wykes supplied the entire group with pedometers from<br />

the Parkinson’s Society and we will be tracking how<br />

many steps we take each month. There will be a prize<br />

for the most steps at the next meeting in September.<br />

CREATIVE WRITERS<br />

The next meeting of the Creative Writers will be held<br />

Tuesday <strong>July</strong> 17 from 1:00 - 3:00 pm. Visitors always<br />

welcome.<br />

MEMORY CORNER<br />

We would like to thank the <strong>Century</strong> <strong>House</strong> members<br />

who lent us their souvenirs of Queen Elizabeth’s past<br />

60 years. Next theme will be unusual candlesticks<br />

which will go in on Friday morning <strong>July</strong> 6.<br />

COMPUTER ROOM<br />

There are 7 computer volunteers. They each have<br />

separate hours as helpers in the computer room. The<br />

volunteers will continue through the summer, during<br />

the hours of the computer room which change to 9:00<br />

am to 12:30 pm. Our next meeting will be Monday<br />

September 10, 11:00 am in the computer room, everyone<br />

is welcome.<br />

CONVERSATION CLASS<br />

We have 12 instructors and 38 students. We are currently<br />

looking for a new intake worker to interview students<br />

who want to join a group to practice their English<br />

skills. Our next meeting will be Wednesday September<br />

26, 10:00 am in the Spruce room.<br />

UPTOWN ARTISTS<br />

The Uptown Artists meet every Thursday during the<br />

summer from 12:30 to 2:30 pm.<br />

BOUQUETS<br />

To the LEADS Planning Committee for participating in<br />

all the interviews for the new training in the Fall.<br />

To Mike McGhee and Ross Stinson for coaching the<br />

Moody Blues and to everyone on the team who helped<br />

line fields, umpire and with all the other tasks involved<br />

in running a ball team.<br />

To the Creative Writers for hosting a public reading of<br />

CONVERSATION CLASS<br />

INTAKE VOLUNTEER<br />

Conversation committee is searching for someone<br />

to help manage the intake process. Conversation<br />

class connects volunteers who are interested in<br />

meeting with people who have English as a second<br />

language and help them to practice speaking English.<br />

Volunteers are able to set their own schedules<br />

and determine how many “students” they would like<br />

to have in their group.<br />

BIRTHDAY PARTY<br />

VOLUNTEERS NEEDED<br />

Do you have three hours a month to volunteer and<br />

have some laughs? Usually held the 2nd Wednesday<br />

or Friday of the month from 6:00 - 9:00 pm, the<br />

parties are hosted for members and their guests.<br />

Volunteers set up tables, serve refreshments, food<br />

and birthday cake. Volunteers also help distribute<br />

bingo cards and help clean up afterwards. Between<br />

7:00 - 7:30 pm volunteers chat and listen to<br />

the entertainment.<br />

Westminster group are welcomed and encouraged to<br />

attend the Burnaby Caregivers Support group. For more<br />

The ninth annual team trivia competition was played<br />

SHOWTIME<br />

The romantic comedy This Means War starring Reese<br />

Witherspoon, Chris Pine and Tom Hardy is presented<br />

on Thursday <strong>July</strong> 12. Two CIA agents are best friends,<br />

partners and always there for each other - until they<br />

both meet and fall for the same woman. Now all the<br />

skills and techniques they have used to fight the enemy<br />

are turned upon one another.<br />

One week later, on Thursday, <strong>July</strong> 19 we will present<br />

Big Miracle, starring Drew Barrymore, John Krasinski<br />

and Kristen Bell. This film is based on real life events<br />

and is the story of a family of grey whales who are<br />

trapped above the arctic circle. A member of Greenpeace<br />

and a reporter team up in an attempt to save<br />

the whales and their efforts lead to many unexpected<br />

consequences.<br />

SENIOR SLUGGERS TOURNAMENT<br />

<strong>Century</strong> <strong>House</strong> is hosting the 31st annual Senior Sluggers<br />

Tournament on <strong>July</strong> 3 & 5 in Moody Park. Make<br />

plans now to head over to the big diamond in Moody<br />

Park and cheer on the Moody Blues as they try to win<br />

the coveted title.<br />

THE AWESOME RACE <strong>2012</strong><br />

The Awesome Race is back more exciting and energetic<br />

than ever. All you need to do is sign up to play<br />

as a team of four, get your bus passes organized for<br />

the day, grab a digital camera (or phone that takes pictures)<br />

and be prepared to have fun! Teams will be sent<br />

to various senior centers across the lower mainland<br />

with challenges to complete and photos to take. Unlike<br />

previous years there is only a minimal cost to play<br />

as teams will be getting their own transportation and<br />

arranging for their own meals. The starting and finishing<br />

points will be right here at <strong>Century</strong> <strong>House</strong> and the<br />

winning team will receive a nice prize. This event is<br />

limited to twelve teams so sign up at the office before<br />

it is all full!<br />

HEART 2 ART<br />

We have received a New Horizons for Seniors Grant<br />

to run an intergenerational art program called Heart<br />

to ART. This community project will celebrate five mediums<br />

of art: Spoken Word, Mosaic, Performance/<br />

Theatre, Digital Photography and Music. Art will be<br />

focused on the following theme: Making the world a<br />

better place through art.<br />

Part of the project is to give 5 seniors, one for each<br />

medium, an opportunity to work with the lead artist<br />

and a youth helping to move the project forward<br />

through public workshops and a gala showcase presentation.<br />

These seniors will receive an honorarium<br />

to participate and must commit to the whole project.<br />

If you are interested in interviewing for one of these<br />

positions please fill out an application form, received<br />

from the front office or contact Shelly, 604.519.1061.<br />

The public workshops will start in September and<br />

October, watch for more information in upcoming<br />

newsletters.<br />

This gentle four hour river rafting float trip begins at the<br />

riverside when your experienced leader Sebastian will<br />

greet you. A short introduction, safety talk and fitting<br />

they can sit back and enjoy the ride. Stops are made for<br />
