Welcome to the first issue of the
Papatoetoe Neighbourhood Support
Newsletter for 2015. My name is
Zoeya and I am the new
Co-ordinator for Papatoetoe
Neighbourhood Support (previously
Papatoetoe Neighbourhood Watch).
My family and I have lived in the
area for over 13 years and in that
time I grew up and attended the
local Papatoetoe schools and then
went on to study Town and Country
Planning at the University of
Auckland.
In my role as Neighbourhood
Support Co-ordinator, I would like to
invite everyone
in the
community to
join Papatoetoe
Neighbourhood
Support (PPNS).
I believe that
the more
members we have, and the more
relationships we forge with
members of our street and
community at large, - the stronger,
safer and more vigilant a community
we will have.
I work with a fantastic team of
volunteer Co-ordinators that all
share the same goal. We all want a
safer, united and thriving
Papatoetoe.
I look forward to my duties as the
Papatoetoe Neighbourhood Support
Co-ordinator and hope to work with
you on making a safer Papatoetoe
community.
PAPATOETOE
NEIGHBOURHOOD
SUPPORT
Ask your sel f ...
Papatoetoe Neighbourhood Support aims to encourage
neighbours to talk to each other and help foster a sense of
community spirit, where everyone is respected and valued.
Papatoetoe Neighbourhood Support strongly believes in
the importance of identifying the strengths and skills if
neighbours to contribute in solving local problems.
Together we aim to:
- Would you know what to do if you heard
screams from next door?
- How quickly could you get help from people
in your street to look for a missing child?
- Would you know if your neighbour was
assaulted/ threatened/ burgled?
- What would you do if you had to wait half an
hour for the police to arrive when you need
them?
- Would you know how to help a child you saw
regularly covered with bruises?
- Educate and empower neighbours to take responsibility
for their own safty.
- Identify the needs of neighbours and ways to assist
each other
- Minimise burglaries and car crime in the local area
- Reduce graffiti, vandalism, violence and disorder
- Support victims of crime
- Enhance the safety features and appearance of the
neighbourhood
- Decide on ways to handle any civil emergencies that
may occur
In a nut shell, Papatoetoe Neighbourhood Support wants to help you feel more involved with the
community. From community BBQs and Picnics to Street Safety awareness programs and self-defence
classes? we strive to achieve a safer and happier Papatoetoe.
The group is a non ? profit organisation that works in partnership with the local Police, the Fire Services and
Civil Defence. It is absolutely free to join and there are no weekly meetings or commitments other than
maintaining vigilance around your neighbour?s property, and reporting any crime or suspicious activity to
the Police and/ or your street co-ordinator.
The Counties Manukau West Community Policing Team, led by Sergeant Pam Dravitski, are pleased to
be lending their support to the new Papatoetoe Neighbourhood Support Co-ordinator Zoeya Kamal.
Sergeant Dravitski?s team consists of seven constables who cover the suburbs of Papatoetoe, Otahuhu,
Mangere and Mangere Bridge. The Community Policing Team are excited to have Zoeya on board and
are looking forward to establishing new Neighbourhood Support Groups in the Papatoetoe area, as
well as maintaining the existing ones. They?ll also be sharing regular crime prevention advice,
beginning with vehicle crime.
The key to success is preventing crime before it occurs. With your help we can reduce the number of
car thefts and make sure that crime continues to decline in our district. There are some simple things
you can do to reduce the chance of your car being targeted;
- Always take keys with you when you leave your vehicle ? never leave them in the ignition in
the driveway
- Always lock your vehicle when you leave it
- Close all windows, including sunroofs
- Park in well-lit areas if possible
- Try not to leave valuables in your car. Thieves will break in for something as small as loose
change
- If you have to leave valuables in your car, make sure they are out of sight, but remember hiding
them is not as safe as removing them
- Don?t leave documents with personal information or keys to your house/ business/ boat etc. in
your vehicle
- Consider installing an alarm, immobilisers or using a steering lock to provide extra security
- Your car keys should not be left in an obvious and visible place at home such as on the kitchen
bench
- Register serial numbers on SNAP website http:/ / www.snap.org.nz
STRENGTHENINGNEIGHBOURLINESS
THROUGH INCREASED SENSE OF
BELONGING
Inclusion and integration was evident at
Anzac day in Papatoetoe. The increased
sense of belonging and participation has
been a great achievement for Papatoetoe
residents. This year Papatoetoe Historical
Society organised an exhibition ?Lest We
Forget?at Youth line from 20 April to 9 May
which attracted hundreds of visitors to pay
tributes to the martyrs. Medals and other
objects related to World War 1 were
displayed.
Members of the Indian community from Retailers
Association, Hope N help charitable Trust, Kuk
newspaper Trust, Auckland Sikh Society and
students from local schools were seen at the
Anzac parade which started at Central School and
culminated at Papatoetoe RSA. Community
development staff of Auckland Council supported
Papatoetoe Historical Society to coordinate a
gathering of Sikh Indians on Friday, 1st May at
Youthline Manukau.
during World War 1& 2. National MP Kanwaljit
Singh Bakshi and Local Board member John
