Graduate Miami! Families Attend the Alvin Ailey American Dance

Theater at the Arsht Center

Eighth grade students and their parents participating in a series of dropout

prevention workshops attended a reception in their honor followed by a

performance by the Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater. Thanks to State Farm

Insurance and the City of Miami Educational Compact for funding and to the

Arsht Center and the Alvin Ailey Dance Theatre for in-kind support.

Kionne L. McGhee, Esq. gave a compelling testimonial “a….mere – I – CAN

conquers all.” Guy A. Wheeler charged the students to pursue their dreams in his

moving address “Fail or Fell.”

The Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater’s new

Artistic Director, Robert Battle, a Miamian from

Liberty City, greeted the families and answered

many questions. The gatherings were truly

inspirational and memorable .

Spring into Summer!

May 15 th - parents and children came to the Miami Children’s Museum to enjoy

this Juicy Juice sponsored Family Learning event. Parents and children took part

in Zumba dancing, Gymboree and fun and interactive healthy lifestyle workshops.

Heavy clouds and rain added to Jungle Island’s lush appeal as thousands of parents

and their children flocked to The Parent Academy’s Free Family Day on April 18, th

for earth miami to learn new ways to make a positive difference in the

environment and to explore new Green technologies.

Jungle Island’s Easter Eggstravaganza’s Egg Hunts:

a Fun-Filled Parent Academy Fundraiser!

Many thanks to Jungle Island for benefiting The Parent Academy during their

three day Easter Eggstravaganza. Egg Hunts, Egg Rolls, Petting Zoos, and so

many other fun outdoor activities were enjoyed by thousands of family members.

Families spent time in beautiful tropical gardens filled with wildlife and friendly

animals - including dolphin swimming off La Playa, Jungle Island’s Private Beach.

Families Gather to Celebrate Health and Wellness

Jungle Island became a garden of wholesome delights February 27 th and 28 th for

the 2010 Food Network South Beach Wine and Food Festival’s Fun and Fit as

a Family event. Many Parent Academy families received complimentary tickets

courtesy of the South Beach Wine and Food Festival. Chefs Paula Deen, Daisy

Martinez, Rachael Ray, Guy Fieri, Rocco DiSpirito and Michelle Bernstein

cooked healthy snacks and treats in the Kellogg’s Kids Kitchen!

Family Fest’s Fairy Tales Kindle Creativity

On one of the coldest of January days in South Florida history, two thousand

parents and their children filled the Ziff Ballet Opera House to experience the

Arsht Center’s warm welcome, enjoy Family Fest’s exciting activities and bask in

the glow of the Miami City Ballet’s performance of Cinderella.

program also took part in a presentation about Fairy Tales and the art of

storytelling before attending the ballet together.

On Sunday, April 19 th , more than 600 family members came to the Miami Science Museum to exercise

critical thinking skills and take part in energy boosting activities at The Parent Academy’s Family

Learning Event, Hands-on Science for Families, funded by The Children’s Trust with additional

sponsorship from Juicy Juice.

Experiment stations were set

up to throughout the Museum

t to encourage scientific inquiry

and hands-on learning.

A commemorative edition of The Very Hungry Caterpillar

was given to every family visiting The Parent Academy table.

Claudia Gonzalez, Registered Dietician and author

presented “Healthy Foods for Children” in the

museum theater.

Dr. Sarah Messiah, Ph.D., MPH held oneon-one

discussions with families about

children’s wellness and fitness.

Families jumped into

Zumba dance sessions

staged in the heart of the

American Sabor Exhibit.

They studied Megalodon,

the world’s largest shark,

on display in the Gallery,

and made fantastic shark

hats. Juicy Juice served

their new healthful juices

and gave away tote bags.

Performing Arts Plaza as families came together to celebrate the arts on May 2 nd at the Adrienne Arsht

Center’s FAMILY FEST. Parents and children explored art, music and dance together.

Thousands of parents and children flocked to Jungle Island’s Easter Eggstravaganza to enjoy beautiful

tropical wildlife and take part in lively family activities April 10 – 12 th . Thanks to the generosity of

Jungle Island, The Parent Academy received proceeds from all the Easter Egg Hunts held during the

three day festival.

Hundreds of families who attended the April 4 th FREE FAMILY FEST at The Adrienne Arsht Center for

the Performing Arts were welcomed with a hands-on introduction to the orchestra’s instruments, and

invited to explore many experiential learning activities. Families were treated to a beautiful concert.

The children’s symphony, Peter and the

Wolf was performed in the Knight Concert

Hall by The Cleveland Orchestra with

Nestor Torres accompanying on flute and

narrating in English and Spanish.
