Strathcona Trust Senior Men’s
Provincial Championship
Killarney Curling Club
February 21 – 25, 2013

Message from CurlManitoba President Resby Coutts
It is a privilege for CurlManitoba to
be in Killarney for one of our
provincial championship events in
this 125 th anniversary year for the
organization.
We thank the Killarney Curling
Club and community for the energy
and imagination of your volunteers
and the support of both sponsors
and fans as we showcase the best
50+ men curlers in the province.
However, we must be mindful as
we showcase the excellence of some of the finest curlers in Manitoba and
Canada that our sport faces challenges across the province.
As an association of member clubs, CurlManitoba is committed to
strengthening the partnership of & with clubs in renewing our sport. While we
recognize our championships as the ultimate opportunity for those curlers who
set their goals at this level, we must also recognize our sport is simply a
recreational and social outlet for many more people.
Perhaps more than any other, our sport uniquely allows people to participate
in a great game and often to cross back and forth from one end of that
spectrum to the other.
The challenge for each of us who loves the game is work together and to be
creative in ensuring curling remains strong as a recreational or competitive
outlet for Manitobans.
On behalf of CurlManitoba I want to express our continuing appreciation for
the vision of the leaders of the former Strathcona Curling Club, whose legacy
continues through the Strahcona Trust support of this championship. And I
extend our thanks, as well, to our many provincial sponsors & partners as well
as our many volunteers and I repeat our thanks to the Killarney community for
hosting this championship in our 125 th anniversary year.
A brief history of
Strathcona Curling Club
On a Sunday morning in 1908 after church, three men
got to talking. From that casual chat of R.J. Gourley,
J.T. Haig, and Walter Payne, the formation of the
Strathcona Curling Club began. The contract for the
building was signed December 29, 1908 and the rink
was ready for curling by February 1, 1909.
The five sheet club was located just north of Portage
Avenue between Furby and Langside Streets. This
facility served its members until the end of the
1967/68 season when the club’s property was sold.
The Club itself operated in other facilities until the
end of the 1981/82 season.
This championship is sponsored by the Strathcona Curling Club. The original trustees
are Jack Callum, Lyle Henry, and Bruce M. Hudson. Bob Scales has taken Lyle
Henry’s position for the 2009 season onward. The trustees are in care of the
presentation of trust funds to Curl Manitoba to conduct the Provincial Senior Men’s
Curling Championship in perpetuity. The Championship has been in existence since
1985.
The Strathcona Trophy, emblematic of the Provincial Senior Men’s Championship, is
presented for annual competition to recognize the contribution to curling made by the
Strathcona at the executive and competitive levels, nationally, provincially and
locally.
Three members of the club served as President of the Dominion Curling Association
(forerunner of the CCA) - Senator John T. Haig, Gordon M. Hudson, and Jack
Dutton. Nine members served as President of the MCA -Senator John T. Haig, John
S. McDiarmid, Robert J. Gourley, Gordon M. Hudson, Clifford R. Hudson, Jack
Dutton, J. Ken Watson, Leo E. Johnson, and Bruce M. Hudson.
On the ice, Strathcona’s rinks captured seven Brier Championships – Gordon M.
Hudson (1928 & ‘29), Robert J. Gourley (1931), Leo E. Johnson (1934) and J. Ken
Watson (1936, ‘42 & ‘49). In addition to the Brier winners, Strathcona rinks won
eleven more provincial championships with Ross Kennedy, Albert Wakefield, J. Ken
Watson, Leo Johnson (2), Roy Forsyth (2), Mac Scales, Norm Houck, and Bruce M.
Hudson (2) as skips.
The Strathcona Curling Club has forever etched its name in the history books of
curling in Manitoba and Canada and although it ceases to exist as a club entity, it lives
on through its Curling Championship namesake.
