Blogs work completely
different than other social
media platforms like
Facebook or twitter. The
whole nature of this medium
has a totally different vibe and
way of communication than
others. When thinking about
Facebook or Twitter, one
notices that one of the
biggest goals of both is to give
short updates on any
occurrence in the host?s life.
Blogs on the other hand are
very content heavy and for it
to be successful, it was
imperative for us to focus on
what we want to transmit,
and along the line the way we
wanted to transmit also
turned very important. The
following description will give
you an insight on our weekly
thought process during this
whole simulation. Due to the
fact that we received the
assignment at the end of
week 1, we will focus on
description after this.
Week 2:
In this week we received
our assignment and
decided to create a blog to
communicate the insights
regarding social media and
business we received to
the outside world. We were
mainly focused on getting
to know the platform and
all the features we could
implement to make it as
attractive as we can. We
also started writing our
first posts which were
mainly revolving around
who we are and what our
interests in social media
were. Additionally, it is
important to note, that our
posts were all rather long;
however, this changed in
the upcoming weeks. What
surprised us was that even
though we didn?t have a lot
of (subject related) content,
we had roughly 100 views.
This showed us that the
fact that blogger had this
function where people can
just click ?next blog?
probably lead quite a
number of viewers to our
page.
Week 3:
We were pretty astonished
in this week that we reached
a couple of hundred views.
We started marketing our
blog on other platforms
hoping to get more views
and apparently it worked,
which made all of us very
ecstatic about the
assignment. Here we
thought again about who our
target audience was, so that
we can offer content which
interests them. Our main
three were academics,
people with interest in the
subject and students at our
business school (Business
School Lausanne in
Switzerland). So we wrote
posts about how businesses
use social media, changing
marketing, true value,
important of frequency and
an info post for our viewers
to inform them that we will
be changing the design one
in a while till we find a
suitable one. We also added
some smaller widgets to the
blog to make it more fun and
interactive by adding a
flag-counter, a search
function and a survey.
Week 4:
By this week, we were
fascinated by the reach we
had. People from all over
Europe, the United States
and Latin America were
viewing our blog. We
mobilized the people we
know to come read our blog,
and it did work. With over
800 views, we were really
amazed by the progress we
made already. Nobody in our
group assumed that we
would ever get 1000 views
and now we were already
really close to this ?magical
number?. We changed our
posts to be much more
compact than they were
initially, and now they were
short to medium length.
Additionally, we decided that
having an interactive feature
for every post would be a big
plus for us, so all of our posts
now had either a picture or a
video related to the topic.
One of the group members,
Isabel, downloaded a search
engine optimizer (SEO) which
made our views skyrocket.
We could hardly believe that
we could reach so many
views by simply adding this
SEO and doing what it
suggests.
Week 5:
We were (positively) shocked
to see that after only one
week, we almost doubled our
views. With close to 1600
views, we were just
wondering were all these
people suddenly came from,
even though we didn?t use
the SEO this week. However,
in our group we thought that
these might be the
aftereffects of the things we
changed to how we posted,
for example by adding a
meta-description to every
post and shortening our
titles. Also, we posted almost
daily on other social media
platforms, such as Facebook,
Twitter and other blogs, and
we saw from the referring
links and websites that it did
give us a couple hundred
views. This week we were
also very active with our
posts and we had a total of
nine posts together, which
was a great success for us.
On a side-note, the Easter
holidays were coming up and
we also had to figure out a
plan how to still stay active
during this time to not fall
into a slump.
Week 6:
Even though we were
regularly active on our blog,
coming back from the two
week holiday and reflecting
on the statistics was still a
highlight for us. Something we
found especially interesting was
the fact that Indonesia was the
second highest country of origin
from where people viewed our
blog. We couldn?t really find an
explanation for why this might
be the case, but it still hit us
hard to really see how far our
messages we are trying to
convey to our viewers go.
During the holidays we posted
daily; however, even though we
got many views, the number
didn?t exceed the predicted
amount as it did in the past. We
thought that the main reason
for this probably is the fact that
most Christian-dominated
countries are celebrating Easter
and therefore aren?t as active on
social media. This then could be
related to the high number of
viewers from other religions
such as in Indonesia, since it is
predominantly Muslim. Another
way of attracting readers was
by working off news messages.
This was the time when Hillary
Clinton announced that she will
run for presidency, and also the
hostage-taking in Turkey.
Especially the Hillary Clinton
post turned out to be very
successful, and it got us a huge
amount of views. We also had a
so called ?Buzz Assignment? to
market our business school?s
new internship program to our
readers. It worked astonishingly
well, and with 170 views it was
our most viewed post ever. This
was mainly due to the fact that
we advertised a lot on the
Facebook pages of other
Universities, as well as on The
Economist, which brought us
an incredible amount of views.
Week 7:
There were two big differences
we implemented this week. The
biggest one is that we created a
landing page for the post
concerning the internship
assignment. This boosted the
views we received on it to an
even higher score of 550 which
totally blew our mind. An
incredible amount of people
saw this post, and judging from
the views on other posts, we
saw that they also went
beyond this landing page to see
the other content we offered.
The next big change we done is
use a program called
linkcollider.com, which Marco
found. This program allows you
to collect virtual coins by
visiting other people?s website,
liking their Facebook page or
following their Twitter account.
By collecting these coins, one
enables others to access the
own website. Using this
platform proved to be a great
success, since now we received
even more views, and judging
from the referring websites and
URL?s, it became our number
one source of views.
Week 8:
This week can be summarized as being an ?experimental week?. We decided
to run one ?no promo? day, to see how many views we could get without any
advertising on other platforms; we got almost 50 views. The only reason we
did this was to have a rough estimate of a ?viewer base? and we did this only
one time the whole week. Another interesting thing is that we received a
comment to a post we published over a month ago. The comment was
completely unrelated to the topic discussed in the post, and it seemed that
the author was promoting his own website. In the beginning we were unsure
how to respond to the comment, and then finally we decided to not react at
all, since we thought it was unfitting to answer a comment from someone
advertising something. The third change we experimented around with is
having more ?controversial? titles specific to regions from where we had our
most viewers from, so the United States. We then had a couple of posts with
these titles specific to the US, and it proved to be successful. Even though the
views didn?t skyrocket, we did manage to attract more people to our blog, and
maybe it will act as a ?cash cow?.
Week 9:
Looking towards the end of our social media simulation, we had quite a lot of
progress. The main thing was our so called ?buzz-2 assignment? which
revolved around us advertising our business school?s double degree and
studying abroad option. It worked out really well and we received quite a lot
of views on that post, which we think is due to us making it our landing page,
just like we did with the first buzz assignment. Interestingly enough, another
post we had received more views. We deduce from this that specifically this
post is being shared by our viewers with their friends, since they would have
to go through the landing page to get to it. Even though this means that our
second buzz assignment doesn?t get as many views, it is still an amazing
sign for us that our readers share our content. Additionally, on a side-note,
we managed to attract almost 2500 viewers in one week, which is absolutely
amazing for us; this increase is mainly due to an increased Twitter
advertising done by Isabel.
Week 10:
For some reason, our views dropped significantly just before reaching an
amazing 10,000 views. We didn?t change anything; we kept on promoting, we
posted regularly and we used the SEO; however, our views still decreased.
Throughout the week, we had peaks of views, but then again deep troughs.
It?s almost as if blogger doesn?t want us to reach 10,000 views, but we will
still continue to reach this ?magical? mark in time. These 10 weeks were an
amazing experience for all of us, and we definitely acquired some tools and
skills to be able to successfully administrate a social media profile.
GroupExperiencesandRecommendations
After a ten week voyage of getting
to know social media in a
dimension which we, as private
social media users, haven?t
experienced before, we did manage
to get some insights into a few
ways of how this medium can be
used more efficiently to get a wider
reach. As a group, one of the most
important things we found is the
significance of a simulation area;
just having a ?playground? where
we can experiment around with
different features and techniques.
This playground gave us the
chance to freely try out new things
and see the reaction of the
viewers. It gave us the chance to
use different mediums, such as
E-Magazines and Podcasts, which
allowed us to explore other ways of
connecting to the viewers. To
connect to the viewers, one has to
be very aware of their behaviour,
since if we do not understand their
way of thinking, we cannot retain
them. This is why it is absolutely
essential to know the target group
as well as possible. An example
here would be the types of posts
we had on our blog. The posts
which were related to social media
and business had varying success
rates. However, when posting a
humorous image which didn?t
really inform the viewers about
anything, but still was connected to
the main topics of our blog, the
views exploded. Therefore, one
could use ?light? content to attract
readers so that they can view the
more ?heavy? content later on.
Additionally, humorous images
tend to not to require too much
focus from the reader and it gives
them a small laugh or chuckle ?
immediate gratification. In these
days, people tend to want to know
things immediately and they
neglect large detailed explorations.
The fact that the attention span of
people is decreasing also has an
Ten week voyage
effect on how bloggers have to
write to them: having shorter posts
have become key, because people
don?t take so much time anymore
to read a post which is a couple of
paragraphs long. Knowing your
reader is absolutely key when
wanting to reach out to large
groups of people.
Content
We had the task to build our
content on our Social Media
Platform in our case Blogger
around Social Media. Thus, we
decided to call our blog
?Experience the Media?
. Our goal was to share with our
readers what kind of influence
Social Media has on us. We
shared also tips how to use Social
Media in an efficient way for
individuals but also companies.
So we started off in introducing
ourselves, saying what our goals
are why we are doing this. We
also shared some personal
information about us such us
where we are from where we are
studying etc. With this we
wanted to achieve to build a
relationship with our readers. As
they know who is writing this
blog and why, therefore we would
not be so anonymous. In the first
tow weeks we wrote long essays
with interesting content, which
has carefully been researched by
us. We thought we are providing
our readers with valuable
information.
However, we discovered that our
essays were way too long.
Therefore, nobody was reading
the whole essay, as people do not
spend so much time on one
Media. From this we learned that
we have to shorten our essays to
be able to gain more readers and
more importantly that the old
readers are coming back. We saw
slight improvements that this
length worked much better. We
kept on going with interesting
topics such as ?How marketing is
changing, Repetition and
Frequency and Advertisements
before Video?just to name a few.
From here we also started to
integrate videos and picture in our
writing to make it more visible for
people and we tried to be more
interactive. With this strategy we
got more and more readers.
From this point on we felt that we
have built a loyal reader base. Thus,
we tried to engage them in our blog
in asking them questions such us
what is your opinion, what do you
want us to write about etc. This is
how we tried to start a discussing
about the topics we covered in
order to be even closer to with our
readers. However, we have to
admit it was much harder than we
expected. We tried different
methods such as writing the
question is capital letters to make
sure everyone can see it.
Moreover, we wrote to each other
answers as we though if there are
already one or two answer our
readers would be more willing to
write something, as they would not
be the first one. We managed to
have one small conversation with
one reader from the United States.
By side this we were not able to
engage our readers more into
conversations. It really was our
goal to have some more comments
from people, as we were sure that
we could have learned a lot from it.
We tried harder and harder and
started nearly to beg our reader to
write a comment. However, we
realised that this approach could
be contra productive meaning we
could annoy our readers and they
would leave. Therefore, we stopped
this approach and said to ourselves
we tried everything the only thing
what we can do is to wait. This
was really hard because we
exactly knew that we just need
a few comments and many
more will follow as this
encourages other people to
write something. We observed
this approach in our articles as
we saw the more readers one
article had the more people
would read this article as they
assume this article must be
particular good.
As we moved on we realised
that we should try to shorten
our post even more to see the
reactions. Thus, we shortened
it as were surprised that we
got even more readers. This
definitely showed us that the
readers are looking for short
posts with interesting content,
which comes to the point. Have
a look at one of our most
successful article about
?Advertisement before videos?.
Hey readers, so this woman
working at Google is talking
about changing consumption
patterns by us, the consumers.
I think she says something
very interesting at 2:40min
about how we will use the
Internet this year: "In 2015,
>80%of the time spent on the
Internet will be watching
videos". Even though the figure
appears to be rather big, don't
forget how social media
platforms are changing by
allowing the users access to all
different kinds of videos
(example: sites on Facebook
like "The LAD Bible" posting
tons of videos).
It wouldn't surprise me, if the
videos on Facebook will also
have advertisements just like
Experiencethemediagroup
Blogger
YouTube has it now. However,
the businesses posting their ads
before these videos should
invest some more money into
making those advertisements,
because I know you all, just like
me, are just spamming the skip
button ;)
We can see from this post this is
the appropriate length people are
willing to read and looking for. As
it still has very valuable
information in it but it is easy to
read. We also posted a video to
this article so if someone is
further interested in this topic he
or she can watch the whole video
and get some more information.
So the key to a successful article
meaning many readers are
interested in it is the length and
the content. We tried to figure
out from our experience with our
blog for what people are looking
for. And therefore posted again
an article with a similar content.
As we decided to make our blog
quite professional we wanted to
see how we could make our blog
a little bit more amusing without
losing our reliability. Thus, we
decided to post some jokes or
questions to think about, which
are not mainstream but still
related to Social Media. Trying to
bring some changes into our
blog. As we assumed it worked
really well, these posts became
the most popular ones. Have a
look at one of these jokes. You
can see this makes people think
about their own behaviour and
with this we also tried to engage
our readers so that they can
share their opinion.
Unfortunately it did not work so
well as we expected for
unexplained reasons.
In order to gain even more readers we decided to post more controversial topics in order to play
with the emotions of the people to start a conversation. Such as the UK elections or the upcoming
US elections still trying to link it to Social Media. This approached worked well for us therefore we
decided to post more about things, which are in the news. Still laying the focus on being
controversial and have a link to Social Media. You can see we develop our content according to our
experiences. This helps us to gain more readers and satisfy our loyal readers. As we are really keen
on building long term relationships with our readers. So far we believe we did a good job as we put a
lot of work in it as this is needed in order to provide valuable content for our readers in order to keep
them and gain new ones.
FollowersandLoyalty
First of all we need to be aware of
it how hard it is to gain the first
followers. Thus, we used approach
in spamming our friends on
Facebook and Twitter in order to
gain the first followers. In hoping
our friends spread the word so that
we gain even more followers. This
approached worked well for us, as
we were able to gain the first
couple of hundred followers with
this strategy. For us it was really
important to have first valuable
content on our blog before looking
for readers. We wanted to have
many followers but also to keep
them and turn them into loyal
followers. We were convinced this
could only be achieved if we
convince the readers with our
content. In the first weeks we
really spammed all people we
know in order to tell them please
come and check out or blog. This
was really hard work as we were
constantly advertising our blog on
different Social Media channels.
Once we had our first loyal
followers we tried to understand
what they are looking for in order
to keep them loyal. And on the
other side we tried to gain new
readers this is quite tricky, as we
need to be very careful with the
content. It is important to keep on
posting content, which are
appreciated by our followers but
also trying to implement new and
different contend in order to gain
more followers. We always
encouraged our loyal followers to
invite their friends to our blog, this
worked well and we gained more
and more loyal followers. However,
once you reach a certain number of
followers it gets harder and harder
to move forward to the next step
away from your friends to people
how have an interest in your
content. We could use our
experience from the loyal follower
to gain new followers. For this we
worked with different statistics
provided by our blog in order to
understand from which country
our followers coming from. From
this knowledge we could form out
content more target towards these
people from this certain country.
We also looked at the statistics,
which tells us which post is the
most popular on in order to
understand which content is
popular by our readers.
These statistics helped us a lot in
order to understand how we could
can more followers. We also
started to post our link to similar
logs so that people with an
interest in Social Media also have
a look at our blog. We also saw
from which platforms the most
people are coming and so we got
an understanding where it is
most valuable for us to make
advertisement for our blog. We
realised we should try to get as
many people us possible to our
blog as we are never able to
convert all into loyal followers.
However, the more visitors we
have the higher the chance to
turn them to loyal followers. Thus,
we kept on advertising for our
blog. For a blog it is very
important to have loyal follower
as blogging has much more
content than other Social Media
platforms meaning people spend
more time on a blog reading
articles than on any other Social
Media channel. We read a lot of
what experts suggest on how to
build a loyal follower base, the
most interesting short
description comes from an
American Social Media
consultant. Have a look: ?At the
root of a good blog is good
writing. No matter how many
other tools you use to drive
traffic, readers will keep coming
back for one reason: they're
interested in what you have to
say. So your first step to building
your tribe of followers should be
focusing on delivering engaging,
high-quality content on the topic
you've chosen to write about, and
people will find their way to it?.
"You have to have a topic; it's a
contract with your reader so they
know what to expect from you,"
says Penelope Trunk, founder of
web-based start-up Brazen
Careerist, a career network for young professionals, who writes a blog of
the same name with 40,000 subscribers. "But write to the edge of that
topic, because your job is to surprise them. Think of a new intersection of
old ideas?.
We learned a lot from this short advice, as we really paid a lot of attention
into our writing. However, we realised that we want to make bigger steps
and this is only possible when we use an SEO. Therefore, we decided to
make some research in order to find the right one, as there are many. We
decided to use Link Collider as our online SEO booster. As Link Collider is
really simple to use and we found it a very efficient tool to increase our
traffic on our blog due to this SEO booster we really increased our followers
and we were able to turn some of them into loyal followers.
Once we started to use Link Collider we realised that we were able to reach
a much wider audience. Suddenly, we had followers from Pakistan, India
and Thailand we would never be able to make a connection with this
people without using a SEO booster. We saw that we were definitely able
to turn some of them into loyal followers as we assume they liked our
content. We realised this as we had every week a similar amount of people
from those countries. As we gained more followers from many different
countries we also had to adjust our content in order to please all our
readers, this was quite tricky, as we first needed to learn what these people
are looking for. Unfortunately, as mentioned before we were not able to
communicate with these people, which made it even more difficult.
However, for us it was very enriching as we learned so much in how to
please our readers in order to keep them as loyal followers. In overall we
strongly believe that we did a good job as we were able to build a strong
loyal reader base form many different countries.
approach
Ever since we began our blog,
we knew what concept and
approach we wanted to use:
trending news in social media,
which were business oriented.
We chose this approach since,
after all, we are all business
students and we thought that
it would be the best concept
for a blog.
Throughout the first weeks,
despite the fact that we had
not developed in depth a
strategy, each individuals
posts was very cohesive and fit
in with the blog?s concept. Our
very first posts were very
focused on social media. They
discussed topics such as
Marketing, small business use
of social media, examples of
success, and how social media
has been changing over the
years.
Within very little time, one of
the things we decided to
modify about our approach,
was the length of our posts.
We noticed within the class
experience, that our posts were
too long and clearly the
audience would not read all of
them.
Hence, our posts when from
being very in-depth and
in-detail to more summarized.
We began to share direct link
to articles or videos which we
liked and we got immediate
results. The blog continued to
e business focused, yet we
became more ?trendy? and as
previously mentioned, offered
more of a gateway to
interesting links than entire
articles written by us.
Even though it would have
been a very interesting
experience to keep the long,
in-depth posts, we had to
accept and adapt to our
audience. Indeed, we learnt
that most readers are not so
interested as to engage in
long reading sessions, but are
searching for more of a
dynamic lecture.
This was also an experience
in learning to adapt to
readers while using social
media. One of the problems
today within social media, is
that writers are unable to
adapt because they are too
attached to what they wish to
publish, and not flexible as to
what their audience wants.
Nonetheless, our group was
very flexible and we easily
learnt how to publish good
content, which was related to
our approach but appealing to
the audience.
As the blog developed, we
became much more
experimental, as encouraged
by our teacher. Even though
we still used business, we
also explored other areas.
From comedy to politics, in
order to analyze in depth
what our audience was
"Within very little
time, one of the things
we decided to modify
about our approach,
was the length of our
posts."
looking for.
This approach resulted in rich,
diverse content which
nonetheless, combined very
well together. We stayed
professional, but added a more
?fresh? and ?young? approach.
Doing so, we increased our
views significanlty and even as
writers, felt more freedom to
share interesting ideas
without the strictly business
limitations.
Another key point in
developing our approach was
to gain reader engagement.
We were highly aiming to get
our readers to comment, which
is also why we watned to
experiment with a different
range of topics, and especially,
be provocative.
Despite the fact that our
readers would not comment, it
did give us a positive result of
rich, thought provoking
content. While at the begining
we were just writing about
trends, news, case studies etc.
we then moved on to writing
content which was designed to
create questions in the readers
minds.
If a new reader entered in our
blog, they would find post
titled:
How savvy are the new
presidential candidates ?
Game of Thrones: an Economic
disaster?
Line between respect and
freedom of speach
From fashion blogger to Harvard
business case
Twitter blocked in turkey
Social Media during Political
Unrest
Millenial moms, good or bad ?
Overall, we can say that our
content and approach were
developed along with our blog.
As we said, we began with a
very business oriented
approach, but then went
experimenting and the result,
today, is rich, fresh,
thought-provoking, trending,
relevant and serious material.
Strategy
The strategy for
?Experience the media?
was a mix of consistency
and experimenting. As
mentioned before in the
Concept & Approach
section, we began with a
very business oriented
approach and hence our
strategy was to write
long articles regarding
social media in business.
As we acquired
experience and learned
that this was not as
appealing for our
audience, our strategy
was to shorten our
articles and mostly be a
?gate-way? to other
material such as articles,
news, images, videos etc.
Hereby, with time we
continued to develop our
strategy and near the
end, our main focus was
to gain comments from
our readers. This is why
we began to use more
provocative articles
instead of very formal,
business ones.
This strategy worked
very well, and we can
assume that by using
political articles on the
UK e, this is why the
country reached second
on our viewers. We
continued using these
kind of articles, not only
using politics but any
other topic regarding
social media which
encouraged readers to
reflect upon their
lectures.
Another point was that
we actually used titles
that would attract our
readers, like controversial
topics like aforesaid. This
really helped us gain
some momentum in the
blog because we learned
that people are attracted
to this.
"as we acquired experience
and learned that this was
not as appealing for our
audience, our strategy was
to shorten our articles"
BuzzOne&Two
What is a buzz? To us it was
creating the most awareness for
a certain post in our blog, in
order to get the people more
interested in a particular topic.
For our Social Media class we
had to do various assignments
so we could get acquainted with
our social media platform. This
was very important because like
this we gained a lot of
experience and at the same time
we learned from our mistakes.
For our first buzz assignment,
we had to try to create a landing
page for our site. At first it was a
bit confusing because we were
recently cognized with our
platform, but we adjusted.
A landing page is a page in a site
that can only be accessed with a
direct link. It cannot be found if
you surf the page, this enable
us, the site owners to have more
precise information about what
link you are willing to click, and
how much information you
actually need from us. This is
very useful because we found
out that many people clicked the
link to go to our page and
In the future we are sure that
the Social Media Experience
group would be able to
capacitate any company the
information needed to maximize
client interest. For our first and
second buzz assignments we
had to help promote the school?s
new programs.
The first buzz was to share
videos and information
regarding the School?s new
internship program. This was
easily made because in the
blogger platform that we chose,
embedding videos and
interactive posts are not hard to
reproduce.
Our visitors have access to
videos in our page, this means
that they did not have to leave
our page in order to see our
videos.
This is important because it
maximizes the attention span of
our visitors, and minimizes the
risk of our visitors wandering to
other pages. We reached a span
of 2360 views in our first buzz
page.
This happened in a span of three
weeks. It is important to
recognize that we were able to
create a landing page by help of
the internet, and other outside
sources.
Our second buzz consisted of
trying to create a landing page
from our blog, to a page in the
school website. This was a
harder exercise because when
we tried creating the landing
page from our blog, it seemed
like it did not work. We later
learned that we can only re
direct our blog to other posts
and pages within our blog.
So, what we did in this case is
that we created a single post
that contained links to the
pages of the school. We decided
not to let people comment on
the page, so in the case they had
a question, they would have to
click on the links. In the end we
were not able to measure how
many people clicked on certain
links because google analytics
technology failed on us or we did
not manage to embed the
information properly.
To finish, the buzz that we
managed to produce around the
landing pages was extremely
successful. The next step to
making it even more successful
is identifying how many people
proceeded to clock on the link,
and their background
information.
Information like gender, location
and age would be important to
us so we could offer our
customers a more interesting
report. If we had to do it again
we would try to fix this
analytics problem.
Personal Reviews- Priscilla
Personal involvement and experience:
Working with my team members was an absolute pleasure. I really
believe and feel that we all complimented each other very well and the
results are visible when looking at our blog. Each of us brought
different kinds of content yet we all had a clear understanding of our
team strategy.
It was essential for the blog, that we all kept posting within constant
time frames, and this was very mcuh accomplished. Even though at
times it was difficult to find new content, we all brought something
interesting and I was always satisfied with the posts which I had
written.
Despite my lack of advanced experience with social media platforms, I
was able to collaborate and learn doing so. I will take all the experience
which I have acquired and use them in the future. Even though I have
not planned to become an expert on the subject, with no doubt will I
use it in my career, where I plan to open small businesses.
As discussed in my latest post, ?Social media case study: Veggie Pizza
Peru? i strongly believe that social media makes a large impact on
small business, and if well used it can be used as very positive
promotion and marketing.
Social Media jungle.
First of all, I need to say thank you to my group as we had such a strong team
spirit. We were all walking into the same direction with the same goals. During
this time working together we discovered how important it is to have a good
communication between each other. Therefore, we set up a Facebook group so
that we are able to communicate very easily to each other. Once we started off
with our blog we discussed a lot what we want to achieve with our blog on what
content we are focusing on how we distribute the work etc. This clear outline of
our strategy helped us a lot in order to move forward and focusing on our
milestones. We all agreed on the strategy and even more we were all convinced
this is the right strategy for us. Thus, we worked very well together as we all had
the same goal. During these ten weeks we tried different new strategies, as we
had to adjust sometimes our strategy in order to gain more followers. However,
the strategy change was always approved by all the team members. This helped
us to be flexible and set our strategy towards our follower as we had great
communication between the team members. Once a week we tried to meet in
person to discuss the next bigger steps and what we want to achieve and how it
could be achieved. I personally found this extremely helpful as we could really
brainstorm in how to succeed.
Personal lesson learned:
This course taught me that
social media is not easy. For
those of us who don?t know, it?s
to underestimate. Nowadays,
creating a social media page is
easy, but making it a succesfull?
is hard work! What I learnt from
working with ?Experience the
media? is that, just posting? Is
not enough. Social media is a
24/ 7 job where you have to be
extremely reactive and sensitive
to interpret your audience.
things to do. Especially
when your audience is not
very engaging, you have to
understand who these
people, what they like, what
they want, what they dislike
without being able to
actually ask them.
The most interesting for me
was to see the
demographics of our
audience, which was so
varied. From developed
countries like USA and UK at
the top to developing
countries, India and
Indonesia at second and
third. I have to say that
reaching 10,000 views
seems amazing to me! I
had already created a blog
on food last summer, and I
remember how impressed I
was with the (few) likes I
got. Yet, 10,000 is an
amazing accomplishment.
Even though at the
beginning I was reluctant to
the idea of using spamming
and promoting techniques
which would be very ?push?
to our audience, i now
understand that this is
what must be done to
achieve those high figures.
This brings me onto
understanding audience, which
from what I learned is the most
essential, yet hardest
Personally I feel that this
Social Media for business
class brought a lot of
knowledge and helped me
discover many things. First of
all, we had the group work:
For ten weeks we worked
together and I have to say
that I got to know these
people better and it feels very
good to work with motivated
people.
I learned to rely on them
because it was my only
alternative and now I know
that the people I worked with
are some of the best at BSL.
We had a great sense of
communication and there
were seldom
misunderstandings. I really
enjoyed the way we knew
each of our tasks and we
became very efficient and
productive in each and every
one of them.
Personally I have the
impression that during these
ten weeks our professor
pushed us and this gave us
the opportunity to grow, not
only as a student but also
professionally. We had an
amazing speaker that really
gave us the grip of the real
world, and at this moment
everything we learned in class
clicked with the real world.
I learned that we have to take
risks when we are doing our
social media platforms.
We had to use different
strategies in order to find
what really worked best for
us, and it was not always
easy.
loremipsumdolor sit amet
Isabel
sadipscing elitr, sed
diam nonumy eirmod
tempor invidunt ut
labore et dolore
magna aliquyam erat,
sed diam voluptua."
I had to use the internet
various times to find out how
things worked in the blog,
because even if it is supposed
to be a user friendly platfrom,
it was sometimes confusing.
I learned to ask for help, not
only from my group members,
but also from other sources
like our professor, the internet,
and my dad.
If I had to operate a social
media platfrom in the future I
would definatley opt for a blog
because it is very practical and
it has many features that
other platforms that we
observed in class do not have.
Blogger let us expand our
knowledge on how to use
different strategies. In the end
we reached 10K views wich
made me really proud of
myself, and of my team.
Finally the most important
lesson I learned was that even
if this task was supposed to be
a competition, I was able to be
proud of my classmates that
were in other groups. (The VK
group specially)
I found all their strategies and
their work very impressive, and
in the future would like to work
with them.
This class was very informative
and helped me see the internet
in other ways. A big thank you
to all my classmates, specailly
our group, and to our great
professor !
Christian
In our group, each member had an unofficial role which basically
emerged throughout the weeks. We were all in charge of posting
content on the blog and there wasn?t too much division. We all had a
tendency of what kind of posts we write, but we also overlapped with
every other member.
My posts tended to be lists of tips of how businesses can use social
media for their advantage, as well as news coverage with something
related to the matter.
Personally, I thought that the list of tips might interest our target
group, because we found out that business related content is very
high on Google?s Trend and Consumer Barometer, so offering this kind
of advice seemed like a good idea. Together with business related
content, news is way up in the ranking.
People want to stay informed about everything so knowing what is
currently going on in the world seems to be a good approach to
reaching customers. Blogger.com also uses hashtag-like marks called
?labels? which allows the readers to search by content.
After an occurrence, people tend to write about it and/ or give their
personal opinion. Having the correct labels to current events therefore
put our blog in line with other communicants, leading to more people
visiting our blog.
One of the biggest learning moments I had during the past ten weeks
was pushing the limits. My nature prefers steady and manageable
development, so in the beginning I was a bit conservative with my
actions to promote the blog.
I live under the assumption that
there is a line for everyone and if
this line is reached, the person
just gets annoyed and then
doesn?t comply to, in this case,
visiting the blog out of defiance.
After a while I learned though
that most people are not like me
and are fine with being exposed
to the same type of promotion
multiple of times.
Additionally, promoting through
the same channels multiple of
times can also allow readers who
do not visit the channel on a
daily basis see the promotion
and go to the blog afterwards.
My own behaviour on social
media is entirely different than
other people?s, and I know that I
would probably not click on a
promotion link.
However, judging from this
experience, I do see how effective
it can be and why businesses
use them so regularly to get
leads.
Dealing with social media is, like
everything, a learning process.
The essential part is to just start
doing things and not be ?scared?
in a way. One has to try out
different things and just look
what happens. If one method is
repeatedly unsuccessful, then
one just has to move on to
another method and see how
that works. Learning by doing
seems to be a very successful
way of approaching a challenge,
which then results in the
appreciation of one?s strengths
and weaknesses, as well as
personal growth.
MARCO
I honestly need to admit that
this experience was very
helpful as it was a very
practical exercise. I
personally learned a lot in
terms of customer
segmentation, customer
relationships and marketing
of a Social Media platform. I
am convinced this practical
exercise has a much bigger
learning impact on all of us. I
learned a lot about the
platform blogger as well as
about many other Social
Media channels due to the
other groups. I was very
motivated in founding out
what is needed to reach
10?000 followers. I honestly
did not expect that it is going
to be so difficult, there are so
many things you need to
consider, which I was not
even aware of. Thus, I
learned so much during this
ten weeks course as every
day was different. I definitely
learned that it is really
difficult to predict what is
going to happen next.
Therefore, it is important to
be flexible and to be able to
adapt to the different
occurring situations. I was
not aware of that an SEO
booster could be so helpful
in expending our follower
base. In terms of
organisation I learned a lot,
as it is really important to
have a good time
management, as this is
essential. It is important to
plan in advance what and
when we are going to post
things. For this we can use
different tools such as
Hootsuite or already
implemented tools in our
Social Media platform. For
instance, blogger or VK have
these tools in order to plan
in advance when to share
our content. This was a
completely new experience
for me, as I never worked
with these tools before. I
assume in the future it could
help me a lot if I decide to
peruse a career in Social
Media marketing. In overall, I
learned a lot in terms of the
subject Social Media, as I
was just a normal user in my
leisure time. Thus, it was
very interesting for me to
see how companies use
Social Media with a business
purposes behind. This
exercise made me also more
aware of how important it is
to understand your
customers (followers). I am
really satisfied in what I
learned as I strongly believe
this could be very helpful for
my professional life. Due to
this course I feel I am much
better prepared in order to
find my way in this very large
