Student recognized
During the July 19 Trustees meeting, Carver High
School student Harold Alford was recognized for
designing the logo that will grace General Benjamin
Oliver Davis Jr. High School and Ninth Grade School.
Alford, who will be a senior this year, designed the logo
in the spring of 2011. He was introduced by Tom
Colwell and presented a certificate of appreciation for his
effort. Colwell was Alford’s principal at Carver and was
named Davis’ first-ever principal in the spring.
Eisenhower teacher recognized
During the July 19 Trustees meeting, Secretary Merlin Griggs informed the audience
that Eisenhower Senior High School teacher Cynthia Knowles has been selected a
Presidential Awards for Excellence in Mathematics and Science Teaching (PAEMST)
finalist. Each application submitted by a state-level finalist is forwarded to a national
selection committee composed of math educators, teachers and past awardees who will
meet in Washington, D.C. to select the PAEMST awardees at the national level. The
White House will announce the results of the national selection process. The timing of
the announcement depends largely on The White House schedule, but it usually occurs in
the spring. The teachers chosen to be PAEMST awardees will be notified by The White
House and will receive $10,000 in addition to being honored at various ceremonies.
Trustees approve salary, longevity pay freeze
During the July 19 Trustees meeting, Board members approved a recommendation by
During the July 19 Trustees meeting, the program was presented by Raylene
Truxton, the district’s coordinator of on-line learning. She provided an overview of the
district’s virtual school program, which provides an outlet for students to earn credits
