products, e.g. LMOs<br />

• Need for internati<strong>on</strong>al co-operati<strong>on</strong> to m<strong>on</strong>itor and<br />

c<strong>on</strong>trol cross-border movement of such products<br />

in order to protect the envir<strong>on</strong>ment and human<br />

• Ensuring that LMO imports and exports have<br />

proper approvals<br />

• Ensuring that LMO shipments are<br />

accompanied with proper documentati<strong>on</strong><br />

• Detecting illegal/unintenti<strong>on</strong>al LMO imports<br />

and taking appropriate measures<br />

1. Ensuring proper approvals for LMO imports<br />

• Verify if the shipment has proper import approvals<br />

from the CNA; also check BCH for the decisi<strong>on</strong><br />

• Check the decisi<strong>on</strong>s posted <strong>on</strong> the BCH regarding<br />

LMOs-FFP approved for domestic use/ marketing<br />

Need to be familiar with:<br />

• The AIA procedure and the domestic decisi<strong>on</strong>-making<br />

procedures and requirements<br />

• Decisi<strong>on</strong>s made in your country <strong>on</strong> different LMOs to verify<br />

whether the LMOs have been approved for import<br />

• Which LMOs your country has subjected to a simplified<br />

procedure or exempted from the AIA procedure<br />

• Any bilateral or multilateral agreements/arrangements<br />

• Ensure that the documentati<strong>on</strong> is complete and<br />

meets the applicable identificati<strong>on</strong> requirements<br />

specified in the <str<strong>on</strong>g>Protocol</str<strong>on</strong>g> and the domestic laws<br />

• Enforce any special handling/packaging<br />

• Basic sampling and detecti<strong>on</strong> methods<br />

• Who to c<strong>on</strong>tact to get specialized services for detecti<strong>on</strong> and<br />

analysis of samples<br />

• How to access to informati<strong>on</strong> <strong>on</strong> the BCH<br />

• C<strong>on</strong>tact details of CNA & other authorities<br />
