CATHOLIC MINISTRIES
ANNUAL APPEAL 2012
PLEASE MAKE A GENEROUS GIFT
A SIGNIFICANT GIFT to the Catholic Ministries
Annual Appeal will touch the lives of many others in
a very positive way. The Annual Appeal provides a
significant portion of the budget of the Diocese of
Joliet. Most dioceses in the country conduct an
appeal, once a year, to help with the costs of
providing services and programs to their parishes
and people. The Diocese of Joliet is no exception.
AS YOU REVIEW the work enabled by your
contribution to the CMAA, please reflect on God’s
gifts to you. He has given you all that you have. Your
gifts to our parish, to the diocese, and to the work of
the church throughout the world should be given in
gratitude for the continuing gifts that God gives you.
He never forgets you.
SOMETIMES IT IS DIFFICULT TO ENVISION how one
pledge can help an organization the size of our
diocese, how it can make a real difference. But each
pledge does make a difference because all parishes
participate in the campaign and the gifts of many
enable our diocese to deliver needed education,
ministry and services. Our combined gifts not only
signify our gratitude to God, they glorify Him by
enabling the work of our diocese.
We are now at 98% parish participation
with 552 donors and our total gifts are
$109,211. Our target goal is $111,913.
Scripture Reflections of
SIXTH SUNDAY OF EASTER
LIVING
the
WORD
Sunday, May 13, 2012
TODAY'S FOCUS:
THE FALLING SPIRIT
A wonderful image of the Holy Spirit is found in the
first reading. While Peter is preaching to the Roman
centurion Cornelius and his family, the Holy Spirit
cannot wait for him to finish and then have them ask for
baptism, but “[while] Peter was still speaking these
things the Holy Spirit fell upon all who were listening to
the word” (Acts 10:44).
• FIRST READING
The gift of the Holy Spirit was poured out on the Gentiles
also (Acts 10:25-26, 34-35, 44-48).
The Holy Spirit guides the growth of the early Church. The
apostles were not deciding who should be accepted into the
Christian community and who should not be, it was the Holy
Spirit who was making that decision and giving clear signs of
those choices. Peter travels to Cornelius who wanted to
become a Christian even though he was not a Jew (he was a
pagan who was sympathetic to Jewish ways, or, as this was
technically called, he was a God‐fearer). Peter had just had a
vision in which he saw a sheet descending from the heavens
with unclean animals upon it and heard a voice ordering him
to partake of those things he had previously considered to be
unclean. This was a prelude to his encounter with Cornelius
(who, being a pagan, was considered to be unclean). The Holy
Spirit comes upon Cornelius, showing Peter and the others
that God had already chosen Cornelius and his family as part
of His holy people.
• SECOND READING
God is love (1 John 4:7-10).
This letter does not define love as an emotion, but an
outpouring of oneself in the service of the other. God did this
when he invited Jesus to die out of love for us. This taught us
the true meaning of love, which is a choice and not a feeling.
This is what we are called to show toward God and toward
our neighbor (for our brothers and sisters are also children
of God).
• GOSPEL
No one has greater love than this: to lay down one’s life for
one’s friends (John 15:9-17).
God first loved us through the ministry of Jesus. He was that
person who loved us so much that He was willing to lay down
His life for us. Having received that love and having decided
that we want to abide in it, we must share that love with
others. The reading uses the word commandments, but does
not mean the 10 Commandments as such. It means to observe
the will of the Father, which is to abide in God’s love and to
love one’s brothers and sisters. We are reminded that we are
God’s friends and not his slaves. He has established an
intimate relationship with us, one that transforms our reality.
As His friends and children, we know what God wants of us
and He has given us the strength to do it.
• REFLECTION
“Love Sunday” would be a good name to give to this
Sunday in this Easter Season. No matter which year of
readings we hear — A, B, or C — the theme is love: God’s
love for Jesus, Jesus’ love for God, and God and Jesus’
love for us and their desire that we love them in return.
This dynamic picture of divine love is captured
powerfully in the first reading when the Holy Spirit
“falls upon” Cornelius and his family while Peter is still
preaching. The most frequent images for the Holy Spirit
in stained glass and paintings are those of a white dove
gently hovering, or a flickering flame of fire suspended
in mid‐air. But here there is a sense of something
weightier “falling upon” the listeners, the weight of divine
love, intensified by divine impatience. St. Alphonsus
spoke of God “crazy in love” with us. Might we find
evidence such a divine passion at play here? It is one of
the clearest expressions of God’s desire for us, of God’s
great love that yearns for intimate communion. Jesus puts
it into words for us. “As the Father loves me, so I love
you.” Take time and repeat these words of Jesus. Then,
hear His next words: “Remain in my love.” How? “If you
keep My Commandments, you will remain in my love.”
And what are those commandments? Just one really:
“This I command you: love one another.”
