much different than a one‐time special collection.
It is a pledge campaign where you can make a gift
payable over 10 months.
A significant gift to the Catholic Ministries
Annual Appeal will touch the lives of many
others in a very positive way. The Annual Appeal
provides a significant portion of the budget of the
Diocese of Joliet. Most dioceses in the country
conduct an appeal, once a year, to help with the
costs of providing services and programs to their
parishes and people. The Diocese of Joliet is no
exception.
As you review the work enabled by your
contribution to the CMAA, please reflect on God’s
gifts to you. He has given you all that you have.
Your gifts to our parish, to the diocese, and to the
work of the church throughout the world should
be given in gratitude for the continuing gifts that
God gives you. He never forgets you.
Sometimes it is difficult to envision how one
pledge can help an organization the size of our
diocese, how it can make a real difference. But
each pledge does make a difference because all
parishes participate in the campaign, and the gifts
of many enable our diocese to deliver needed
education, ministry, and services. Our combined
gifts not only signify our gratitude to God, they
glorify Him by enabling the work of our diocese.
If you received your pledge form in the mail,
please complete it and mail it back or bring it to
Mass next weekend. For those of you who did not
receive a mailing or have not had time to respond
to it, we will conduct our in‐pew pledge process at
all Masses next weekend.
After our parish exceeds its CMAA goal of
$116,529 in paid pledges, 50% of any additional
funds are returned for use in our parish.

TODAY'S FOCUS:
THE PRESENCE OF THE HOLY ONE
To be in the presence of the Holy One is an awesome
experience. These readings direct our attention to
three men who have had this experience: Isaiah, Paul
and Simon Peter. Their experiences can be instructive
for us, when we find ourselves in the presence of the
Holy One.
• FIRST READING
Here I am! Send me (Isaiah 6:1-2a, 3-8).
Isaiah was in the temple when he experienced the
holiness of God. In the Bible, holiness means that God is
totally beyond our understanding—He is truly great and
awesome. Isaiah is filled with fear and recognizes his
sinfulness. When we encounter the holy, we realize how
broken and limited we are. This is what fear means. It is
not terror, it is awe. God cleanses us of our sin and gives
us courage to do what we cannot do on our own.
• SECOND READING
So we preached and so you believe
(1 Corinthians 15:3-8, 11).
This kerygma (proclamation an apostle would make
when first arriving in a new city) tells how Jesus died for
our sins, was buried, and rose from the dead. It speaks
apparitions after the Resurrection. Jesus appeared to
Peter and the Twelve, and to over 500 at one time. This
account is not contained in the Gospel, which means that
the Gospels do not contain all the details of what
happened in those days. Jesus also appeared to James and
the apostles. Paul also speaks of the revelation that was
made to him. He is filled with awe at the fact that God
would have chosen him (when he had persecuted the
Church).
• GOSPEL
They left everything and followed Jesus (Luke 5:1-11).
The one who is called is filled with a sense of awe and
fear, yet God promises to supply all that person needs to
be able to respond. Peter, a fisherman on the Sea of
Galilee, had fished all night, not catching a thing. Jesus
uses his boat as a platform to preach to the crowd that
had gathered. He told Peter to toss his nets out into the
water, a highly unusual act as one fishes at night on the
Sea of Galilee. In the morning, the water’s surface tends to
heat up quickly and the fish swim to lower, cooler waters.
The net should have been empty but the tremendous
catch pulled in was clearly something miraculous. Peter
reacts to this suspension of the rules of nature with
terror. He recognizes that something very holy was
happening and this filled him with great fear. He knew he
was a sinner and did not deserve to be in Jesus’ presence.
But, we are called to service not because we deserve it,
but rather because God will work in and through us.
• REFLECTION
Today we witness three encounters with the Holy One in
three different settings, but with three similar responses,
both immediate and long‐term. Isaiah’s vision of God in
the temple included angels surrounding God and praising
God’s glory. His immediate response was fear and
unworthiness at seeing the living God. But God’s
compassionate action of purifying his lips leads Isaiah to
offer his service. For Simon Peter, the experience of the
holy came when a stranger walked by as Simon was
finishing an unsuccessful night of fishing. Jesus got into
his boat, taught the crowds first, then turned to Simon.
Something in Jesus’ manner must have persuaded Simon
to follow His directions. The result was so many fish that
the boats almost sank. Simon suddenly knew he was in
the presence of the Holy One. Unworthiness and fear
flooded his heart, but, as God did with Isaiah, Jesus
removed Simon’s fear and Simon followed Him. Paul
briefly alludes to his own unworthiness to be an apostle,
rooted in his experience of the Holy One on the road to
Damascus. He witnessed to God’s grace at work by
preaching what has been handed on to him: that Christ
died for our sins, was raised from the dead, and appeared
to Paul, the least of all the apostles. An experience of the
Holy can come to us in church, in the midst of our work,
or even when we are heading in a very different direction
than the one God has planned for us. Pray God we will
respond to it.

CATECHISM CORNER
Nobody’s perfect. This is precisely why we profess
our belief “in one baptism for the forgiveness of
sins” so that, like the Prodigal Son (Luke 15:11‐32)
and the Tax Collector (Luke 18:9‐14), we can
examine our consciences regularly, seek forgiveness
and mercy from our loving God, and receive the
graces of absolution offered in the Sacrament of
Reconciliation. As the Second Vatican Council
proclaimed in Gravissimum Educationis, the more
we learn about our faith and study the Scriptures, the
better we understand what it means to live and act as
a virtuous and faithful follower of Christ every day.
And with every new discovery of faith, our hearts
may once again be converted to the Gospel.

LENTEN REGULATIONS
Everyone 14 years old or over is bound to abstain
from meat on Ash Wednesday and all the Fridays of Lent.
Everyone 18 years of age and under 59 years of age
is bound to fast on Ash Wednesday and Good Friday.
On these two days of fast and abstinence only one
full meatless meal is allowed. Two other meatless meals,
sufficient to maintain strength, may be taken according
to each one’s needs, but together they should not equal
another full meal. Eating between meals is not permitted
on these two days, but liquids, including milk and fruit
juices are allowed. When health or ability to work would
be seriously affected, the law does not oblige.
To disregard completely the law of abstinence
and fast is seriously sinful.
Lent is the principal season of penance in the
Christian year. All faithful are strongly urged to develop
and follow a program of voluntary self-denial (in addition
to following the Lenten regulations), serious prayer, and
a performance of works of charity and mercy.

Restoring the Church • Building the Future
ASH WEDNESDAY COLLECTION
FOR THE CHURCH IN
CENTRAL AND EASTERN EUROPE
Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,
Soon, our diocese will take up the Collection for the
Church in Central and Eastern Europe. This Collection
supports essential unmet pastoral needs in Central and
Eastern Europe and areas of Central Asia formerly under
Soviet control. Our assistance is vital to the growth and
strength of the Church in these regions.
Less than 100 years ago, the country of Slovenia did not
exist on any map. As a new country, it fell to the harsh rule
of Communism and state‐sponsored atheism, from which
its people suffered for many decades. Today, with help
from the Collection for the Church in Central and
Eastern Europe, the city of Ljubljana is home to Project
Bethlehem, a safe, low‐cost housing center where young
women are able to live while they attend university. The
Salesian Sisters of St. John Bosco run the center and
provide programs for Catholic formation, personal growth,
and leadership, all based on Church teachings.
In Romania, the Archdiocese of Bucharest is able to
educate over 38 seminarians at the inter‐diocesan
seminary of Iasi with support from the Collection.
Romanian Catholics no longer live in the shadows and
worship in secret. Instead they are looking toward a
brighter future of the Church after 70 years of Soviet rule.
For them, the Collection has encouraged the seminarians
to be a beacon of hope for the faithful in the region.
Our diocese will take up this collection on Ash
Wednesday, Feb. 13. Please be generous in the Collection
for the Church in Central and Eastern Europe, where your
gifts are restoring the Church and building the future.
Last year, our diocese donated $75,728.41. Thank you.

Catechists receive a discount of free tuition of $150 for the first child. Aides

Bishop R. Daniel Conlon, Diocese of Joliet
On July 14, 2011, Bishop Conlon was installed as the bishop
in the Diocese of Joliet. As a member of the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops,
Bishop Conlon has served on the Administrative Committee and the Subcommittee on
Marriage and Family. Since November 2011, he has served as Chairman of the Committee
on the Protection of Children and Young People.
Meg and Dan Haycraft, Founder of TWOgether, Inc.
Join Dr. Dan and Meg Haycraft, the founders of TWOgether, Inc., a counseling and
educational firm for couples, as they share practical advice on how to regain valuable
family time. Dr. Haycraft is a psychiatrist in private practice, and Meg Haycraft is a clinical
social worker specializing in couple counseling, with more than 20 years experience.
Twogether, Inc. provides individual services as well as workshops, retreats, and intensive
skill building experiences for couples in the spirit of marriage enrichment and divorce
prevention. The Haycrafts are columnists for The Pioneer Press, and regularly participate
in TV, radio and media forums to discuss relationships and marriage.
