CATHOLIC HOME MISSIONS APPEAL
Collection Next Weekend
Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,
Four out of every ten dioceses in the United States
cannot offer their people basic pastoral care or
provide priestly formation and lay ministry training
without outside help. The millions of Catholics who
live in these places, called home mission dioceses,
rely on your generous support of the Catholic Home
Missions Appeal.
For example, Prince of Peace Catholic Church in
the Diocese of Lexington is the only Catholic
presence in two Kentucky counties. The pastor splits
his time between Prince of Peace and St. Julie’s, a
parish 25 miles away. The difficult travel in
Appalachia combined with the economic hardships
faced by the population strains the resources of the
diocese. Support from the Appeal provides welltrained
lay ministers and deacons to attend to the
spiritual needs of those in the region and also allows
Prince of Peace Parish to provide a food and clothing
bank for those in need.
With your support, the Catholic Home Missions
Appeal can continue to provide essential pastoral
outreach in home mission dioceses. Last year, our
diocese donated $251,732.24. Please be generous to
this year’s Appeal and help strengthen the Church

Nobody’s perfect. This is precisely why we profess
our belief “in one baptism for the forgiveness of sins”
so that, like the Prodigal Son (in Luke 15:11‐32) and
the Tax Collector (in Luke 18:9‐14), we can examine
our consciences regularly, seek forgiveness and
mercy from our loving God, and receive the graces of
absolution offered in the Sacrament of Reconciliation.
Furthermore, as the Second Vatican Council
proclaimed in “Gravissimum Educationis,” the more
we learn about our faith and study the Scriptures,
the more we will better understand what it means to
live and act as a virtuous and faithful follower of
Christ every day of our lives. And with every new
discovery of faith, our hearts may once again be converted
to the Gospel.

TODAY'S FOCUS:
GOD’S WORD EXPANDS HEARTS
God’s word not only enlivens but is also a two-edged
sword provoking opposition. Spoken by the prophets,
past and present, it challenges treasured ways of
thinking, relating, and acting. God’s word often prunes
what works against life so greater fruitfulness can
result. It will achieve the end for which it was sent.
• FIRST READING
A prophet to the nations I appoint you
(Jeremiah 1:4-5,17-19).
God has given us each a mission to proclaim the Good
News. Yet, there will also be a price to pay. If we try to live
a good life and do what is right, we will face opposition.
There is a saying that no good deed goes unpunished. This
is why it is important to remember that we are not doing
this on our own. God reminds Jeremiah to do what he was
doing. God knew that Jeremiah could not do it on his own.
He did not expect him to do that. God would accompany
him and give him the courage to proclaim the truth to his
community.
• SECOND READING
So faith, hope, love remain, these three; but the greatest
of these is love (1 Corinthians 13:4-13).
Paul quotes a hymn on love to give the most important
criterion by which the gifts of the Spirit should be used.
Love should be the measure of all that we do. This hymn is
especially important for us today, for the word “love” has
been misused by our society. Paul is not speaking about
affection, or sexual attraction, or neediness, or any of the
other ideas that are called “love” today. He speaks about
the willingness to serve and even die for the other. This
hymn could serve as an examination of conscience to help
us determine whether our actions and attitudes are really
based upon love. Paul also speaks of his former attitude
(that of a child). By this he means that he once thought
only of himself (he is speaking of selfishness that children
can sometimes display). Now he has learned to be
generous and think more of others than of himself. This is
what heaven means: not being concerned with ourselves,
but being a totally giving person for all eternity.
• GOSPEL
Like Elijah and Elisha, Jesus was not sent only to the Jews
(Luke 4:21-30).
Jesus is rejected by his home village of Nazareth because
He had proclaimed to be the fulfillment of the prophecy
from the book of the Prophet Isaiah—He was the Anointed
One of the Lord who comes to give consolation to the poor
and rejected. One would think that the reaction would be
of great joy. Yet, they chose to reject Him. Why? A reason
may be that we do not like to depend on others; we want
to solve our own problems and be autonomous. When
Jesus teaches that they need Him, they are enraged and try
to kill Him. Ironically, this means that the Good News is
not something people will readily accept; it calls us to
conversion and vulnerability and to recognize that we are
no better than the widow of Zarephath and Naaman, the
Syrian. It is only when we are willing to admit this that we
can open our hearts to the healing Jesus is offering.
• REFLECTION
When Jesus went to His hometown synagogue on the
Sabbath, after His time in the desert, He reads from Isaiah
61, His three‐fold ministry of preaching the good news to
the poor, bringing liberation to the oppressed and
captives, and giving “recovery of sight to the blind” — a
phrase from (Isaiah 42:1‐9), that presents a servant for all
nations. Jesus extends the boundaries of God’s love to the
Gentiles, and this enrages His listeners, a group very
similar to the present‐day setters in Israel. Then, Jesus
pours oil on the flames by noting that two revered
prophets of Israel, Elijah and Elisha, helped, even cured
Gentiles rather than their own people. During Israel’s
history, God worked through the prophets — from Elijah
to Isaiah to Jeremiah to Jesus — to expand the boundaries
of the hearts of God’s people to include the poor, the weak,
and the Gentiles. We hear God’s word attempting to
penetrate our own hearts in St. Paul’s call to cultivate love:
a call to patience and kindness, not being rude or selfseeking,
but enduring all things. God’s word often calls for
dying so that more life can flood into and out from us.

Your options for 2013‐14 sessions are listed below (session times remain the
same as the 2012‐13 year). At registration, you will be asked to please number
your preference from 1‐4. Selections are not guaranteed – they are dependent
upon adequate volunteers in all areas.

Catechists receive a discount of free tuition of $150 for the first child. Aides
receive a $75 tuition discount. All tuition and fees will remain the same as
2012‐13 year: $150 for first child including books, $200 for two children,
$250 for three or more, $50 sacrament year donation (2 nd and 8 th grade).

Bishop R. Daniel Conlon
Diocese of Joliet
On July 14, 2011, Bishop Conlon was installed as the bishop
in the Diocese of Joliet. As a member of the United States
Conference of Catholic Bishops, Bishop Conlon has served
on the Administrative Committee and the Subcommittee on
Marriage and Family. Since November 2011, he has served
as Chairman of the Committee on the Protection of Children
and Young People.
Meg and Dan Haycraft
Founder of TWOgether, Inc.
Join Dr. Dan and Meg Haycraft, the founders of
TWOgether, Inc., a counseling and educational firm
for couples, as they share practical advice on how to
regain valuable family time. Dr. Haycraft is a psychiatrist
in private practice, and Meg Haycraft is a clinical social
worker specializing in couple counseling, with more than
20 years experience. Twogether, Inc. provides individual
services as well as workshops, retreats, and intensive
skill building experiences for couples in the spirit of marriage enrichment and divorce
prevention. The Haycrafts are columnists for The Pioneer Press, and regularly
participate in TV, radio and media forums to discuss relationships and marriage.
