CATHOLIC MINISTRIES
ANNUAL APPEAL 2012
SECOND SUNDAY OF EASTER
(DIVINE MERCY SUNDAY)
April 15, 2012
"Who indeed is the victor over the world
but the one who believes that
Jesus is the Son of God?"
— 1 JOHN 5:5
PLEASE MAKE A GENEROUS GIFT
A SIGNIFICANT GIFT to the Catholic Ministries Annual
Appeal will touch the lives of many others in a very
positive way. The Annual Appeal provides a
significant portion of the budget of the Diocese of
Joliet. Most dioceses in the country conduct an
appeal, once a year, to help with the costs of
providing services and programs to their parishes
and people. The Diocese of Joliet is no exception.
AS YOU REVIEW the work enabled by your
contribution to the CMAA, please reflect on God’s
gifts to you. He has given you all that you have.
Your gifts to our parish, to the diocese, and to the
work of the church throughout the world should be
given in gratitude for the continuing gifts that God
gives you. He never forgets you.
SOMETIMES IT IS DIFFICULT TO ENVISION how one
pledge can help an organization the size of our
diocese, how it can make a real difference. But
each pledge does make a difference because all
parishes participate in the campaign and the gifts
of many enable our diocese to deliver needed
education, ministry and services. Our combined
gifts not only signify our gratitude to God, they
glorify Him by enabling the work of our diocese.
If you received your pledge form in the mail,
please complete it and mail it back or
drop it in the collection basket at Mass.
AFTER OUR PARISH EXCEEDS ITS CMAA GOAL in
paid pledges, 50% of any additional funds are
returned for use in our parish.
Divine Mercy Sunday
NOVENA - TODAY!
Sunday, April 15th 2:30-3:30 p.m.
We will celebrate Divine Mercy Sunday
this Sunday, April 15th from 2:30-3:30pm
in the church to commemorate Our Lord’s
unfathomable mercy as revealed to Sr.
Faustina who was later canonized by the
late Pope John Paul II. This will prove
St. Faustina to be a very special hour to draw
closer to Jesus who so much longs
for us to answer His call to live our lives in Him. Divine
Mercy Sunday culminates a nine-day Divine Mercy
Novena which starts on Good Friday.
You can pick up Novenas and the Holy Hour flyers
in the back of the church. The Novena is very short
yet powerful. To complete the Novena, please join us
in church for song, prayer, and adoration this Sunday.

TODAY'S FOCUS:
A TIME TO FATHOM
Have you ever wondered why the Easter Season
lasts so long? Why seven Sundays of Easter whereas
Christmas usually gets two? We are blessed to have 50
days to fathom the depth of this great mystery of faith,
to come to know more fully Jesus as our Lord and God.
• FIRST READING
They were of one heart and mind (Acts 4:32-35).
This reading is St. Luke's idealized vision of life in the early
Christian community. He wrote his Gospel and Acts for
pagans who were considering conversion. He wanted to
show them that Christians lived truly virtuous lives. The
community is described as living in perfect social order.
They practiced a communal distribution of goods so that
none in the community was lacking anything. The apostles
served as focal points of unity. While the peacefulness of
the community is probably exaggerated, we are reminded
that we Christians should practice great charity and
generosity in the way we treat each other.
• SECOND READING
Whoever is begotten by God conquers the world (1 Jn 5:1-6).
This letter was written at the beginning of the Second
Century AD to combat a heresy called Docetism. The
proponents of this heresy denied that Jesus was the Son
of God and felt that God could never take on human form
and certainly never die on the cross. They seemed to lack
in charity toward their brothers and sisters, and to have
practiced immorality. Hence, we see the insistence in
loving all the children of God and also observing the
Commandments. The author argues his position is
proven by the witness of three things: the water (Baptism),
the blood (the Eucharist) and the Spirit (which gives
witness in their hearts that what he said is truth).
• GOSPEL
Eight days later Jesus came and stood in their midst (Jn 20:19-31).
When Jesus first appeared to the disciples, they were
filled with fear, but Jesus greets them with the words,
"Peace be with you." No recriminations or accusations,
just total acceptance. Jesus then breathes upon His
disciples. Through this gesture, Jesus is breathing His
Holy Spirit into the disciples. It recalls the Genesis
creation story in which Adam was made into a living
being through the breath of God's Spirit. Now, we are
made into a new creation. Thomas did not want to
believe in the Resurrection until he had concrete
evidence. Thomas says to Jesus, "My Lord and my God."
This is one of the few times that Jesus is called "God" in
the New Testament. We also see that Jesus is truly risen
in the flesh. This was a rejection of an early heresy called
Docetism, which denied the reality of the incarnation and
suffering of Jesus. Finally, those who believe without
seeing (those of us generations after that eyewitness) are
commended for believing.
• REFLECTION
Can one "fathom" a mystery? "Fathom" derives from an
Old English word meaning "outstretched arms;"
eventually it referred to the length from fingertip to
fingertip of arms opened wide. As a verb, it means to
probe or penetrate in order to understand. Granting the
impossibility of ever coming to fathom the Resurrection
fully, the image of trying to reach out and put our arms
around this great mystery — or, better yet, to have the
risen Christ put His outstretched arms around us,
drawing us into it more fully. Which brings us to Thomas.
He is the original person who tried to fathom the risen
Christ, insisting that if his friends in the upper room
wanted him to believe what he could only think of as
nonsense, he needed to touch the wounds of the risen
Lord. Jesus didn't seem to have much of problem letting
him. We never learn whether Thomas did touch Jesus
or not, but every second Sunday of Easter we are told
this story about Thomas and the risen Lord. It
encourages us to fathom the mystery that is our faith,
to learn to penetrate it by confessing Jesus as our Lord
and God, then allow this belief to flow out into our
daily activities, reaching out to embrace others. Don't
you think when Thomas left the upper room that
day he knew that the Resurrection was not something
to keep to himself? That his whole being was filled with
the warmth and light absorbed from being in the
presence of the risen Lord? Is it possible that this can
happen to us?
Our RCIA Program
Completes Another
Successful Year
I have many people in our parish to thank for helping me
usher in this year’s RCIA class...
W
E ARE A FAITH COMMUNITY THAT SHARED
OUR INDIVIDUAL FAITH JOURNEYS WITH
THOSE WHO SOUGHT TO JOIN US AS
CATHOLICS. Together we walked on the journey to the
Lord. We shared our love for our Catholic faith as we
helped others come to know and love the Lord in a
uniquely Catholic way.
I WANT TO PUBLICLY ACKNOWLEDGE those
individuals who helped me prepare the six
individual adults whom we welcomed into our St.
Anthony community of faith at this year’s Easter
Vigil. Our RCIA Team: Sister Ella Binz, Paul
Greenawalt, Tree Guzy, and Vicky Stasulus who
faithfully came to our weekly Tuesday night classes
in the Padua Center.
OUR SPEAKERS who presented on a variety of
topics related to the Catholic faith and who are such
a wonderful asset to our program: Carol and Ray
Bodnar, Deacon Don Higgins, and Ron Fries.
FATHER GREG who presided over such a beautiful
teaching Mass which introduced the class to the
heart and soul of our Catholic faith—the weekly
celebration of the Eucharist. Father Godwin
Olugbami who assisted Father Greg with the
Sacrament of Reconciliation for our RCIA and Adult
Confirmation candidates.
Deacon Rich and Dianna Rosko, Pat
Greenawalt, Sister Ella Binz, Deacon Tony
Schlott, Sophie Follenweider, Deacon Don
Berkey, Lindy Sue Luster-Bartz, Barbara Boucek,
Paul Greenawalt, and Deacon Dan Danahey.
Valerie Doubrawa, Father Ildephonse Skorup,
Jan and Wally Gorczowski, Linda Pierzchalski,
Roy Corrigan, Deacon Joe Johnson, and Bill
Kenny.
To Wayne Luff for taking pictures of the RCIA
Class and the various RCIA events which were held
throughout the year.
Mike and Tree Guzy who created the photo
display of this year’s class that you see in the church
atrium.
Bev Regalado who provided secretarial support
to me for our classes and our RCIA Retreat.
Jeanne Gayton who helped secure a meeting
place large enough for our class to meet and church
times for various RCIA events.
Deacon Tony Schlott who helped facilitate
information about our RCIA program through the
Adult Faith Formation Office.
Deacon Joe Johnson who planned and
coordinated all of the RCIA liturgy events: the Rites
of Sending, the Three Scrutinies, and the Easter Vigil.
Special thanks to our pastor, Father Greg, who
worked behind the scenes with me on the many
aspects of the RCIA program and hosted two
wonderful receptions for the RCIA Class and their
families.
Karen Kiley who made the arrangements for our
RCIA Fall dinner and Easter Vigil reception.
Raul Mendoza who set up our meeting room in
the Padua Center each week for our classes.
AND FINALLY, TO MY WIFE, Barb, who was always
there to give me help, suggestions, and support to
make the RCIA program run smoothly.
MAY GOD BLESS ALL of those who helped me
shepherd this year’s class into our St. Anthony
Catholic Parish.
Thanks and God Bless all of you!
St. Vincent De Paul Society
ST. ANTHONY CONFERENCE
IN THE GOSPEL TODAY, JESUS STANDS IN THE
MIDST OF US AND SAYS: "PEACE BE WITH YOU!"
During Mass we turn to each other and say
"Peace be with you!" As you put your gift into
the St. Vincent de Paul box you say "Peace be
with you!" to those who are poor and hungry.
SVDP - St. Anthony Conference
Summary of the 2010-2011 Annual Report
Dear Friends,
EACH FISCAL YEAR (October through September), the
St. Anthony Conference of the Society of St. Vincent de
Paul is required to submit an extensive annual report
of our finances and activities to the National Council.
Here is a summary of that report for 2010-2011.
Through our home visits, monthly Food Drives,
Christmas and Easter Giving Trees and other
activities, we served 399 people directly. That
included 144 face-to-face visits with families in
addition to 145 telephone contacts. It does not
include those helped by your donations to the SVDP
Thrift Stores (our two clothing drives) or those who
benefit from your gifts to the food pantry at St.
Lawrence O’Toole Parish.
WE COLLECTED $33,697 in monetary donations and
were reimbursed $5,648 from the Joliet Council, for
total receipts of $39,327. We paid out $51,033 in
support of our clients in the form of utility, rent and
other similar payments. We spent only $593 in
operating supplies such as stamps, copier ink and
paper. This deficit required us to use $11,706 from
our reserve account.
OUR MEMBERSHIP, those active on a week-to-week
basis, plus those who have sent monetary donations,
includes 210 members. Just as important are all you
generous parishioners who donate food to the
monthly collection or provide the special gifts at
Christmas and Easter. We estimated that $103,830 in
goods and services were donated this past year,
helping about 2177 individuals! Total hours of service
are estimated at 3,100 and volunteer miles about
6,500.
WE THANK YOU FOR ALL YOUR GENEROSITY. These
combined efforts are what make this such an
impressive report for the year. It shows that like
Christ, we understand the importance of showing
compassion for those in need. May we continue His
good work throughout this current year.
In His Peace,
THANK YOU
"Looking back at the past two months after
our house fire, it has been a roller coaster ride
of emotions with lots of lows but there have
been some high points, too.
One of those high points has been the
support, prayers and generosity of St. Anthony’s
and its parishioners.
We can’t begin to tell you how
much this has meant to our
family and helped to jump
start us on the road to
recovery. We are truly blessed!"
PRO-LIFE REFLECTION
"I am the Way,
and the Truth,
and the Life."
— John 14:6
REFLECTION
Jesus is the Way precisely because
He is the Truth and Life. "The Son
of God came into the world to
destroy the works of the devil"
(1 Jn 3:8), and as John 8 reveals, those works are lies
and murder. Jesus, the WAY, overcomes those works
precisely by being the Truth (undoing the devil's lies)
and the Life (undoing the devil's works of death).
PRAYER
Lord, we thirst for Your Truth; we embrace Your Life; we
cling to You. You are the Way to our eternal salvation.
St. Anthony WOW provides the next
step in emotional and social support
after losing your spouse.
ALL ABOUT WOW (Widows or Widowers)
AFTER YOU HAVE GONE THROUGH THOSE DIFFICULT FIRST
stages of grief and are ready to face life again, you
sometimes find it is difficult to go out with the friends
you’ve had all your life. W.O.W. gives widows or widowers
of all faiths a chance to socialize with others in the same
situation. Our many activities allow you to choose the
things you enjoy doing while making lasting friendships.
(Photo l/r) In early December, WOW celebrates another year with a
Christmas Party. Enjoy festive decorations, a wonderful dinner, music,
a few door prizes and best of all, fellowship with great friends.
We have Monthly Meetings,
Saturday Breakfasts, Friendship
Dinners Out (FDO’s), Annual Picnic,
Bowling League, Golf League,
Christmas Party, and WOW Walkers
2012-2013 CATECHISTS AND VOLUNTEERS NEEDED
Please contact the REP office at 815-469-6072 for more information.
In the meantime...
Top 10 reasons YOU
should become a CATECHIST
The best way to learn is to teach.
If your own faith education ended years ago, the resources and materials
you are exposed to as a catechist will surely refresh and expand your own
knowledge.
Catechists tell the truth.
The world needs the message of the Gospel and the way to true happiness;
as a catechist, you offer a hungry world that sustenance.
Sharing the faith is an honor.
It's estimated that fewer than one (1) percent of Catholics are catechists.
Your own faith will come alive.
As a catechist, you will discover that prayer, liturgy and your own
relationship with God will become more vibrant and meaningful.
You become an active part of the most active part of your parish.
When you join the catechists in your parish, you enter into a community
that will support you on your faith journey, pray for and with you and
encourage you in your Catholic way of life.
A catechist is a role model.
As a catechist, you get to model behaviors young people might not learn
anywhere else.
You will be practicing stewardship.
Being a catechist is a way of being a good steward by giving a bit of your
most precious resource -- your time.
You show your own family that you value religious education.
Taking time out of your life to teach the faith shows your own children,
grandchildren, siblings and family members that you put a high priority
on religious education.
It's fun.
Kids remind adults to live and laugh in the moment and get enthused about
things like holy days and stories of saints.
It's what we are called to do.
At the end of his earthly ministry, Jesus said: "Go, therefore, and make
disciples of all nations."
SAINT OF THE WEEK
ST. STANISLAUS
1030-1079
Saint Anthony Catholic Church
ANYONE WHO READS THE
HISTORY OF EASTERN
EUROPE CANNOT HELP BUT
CHANCE ON THE NAME OF
STANISLAUS, the saintly but
tragic bishop of Kraków,
patron of Poland. He is
remembered with Saints
Thomas More and Thomas
Becket for vigorous opposition
to the evils of an unjust
government.
Born in Szczepanow
near Kraków on July 26,
1030, he was ordained a priest after being educated in
the cathedral schools of Gniezno, then capital of Poland,
and at Paris. He was appointed preacher and archdeacon
to the bishop of Kraków, where his eloquence
and example brought about real conversion in many of
his penitents, both clergy and laity. He became bishop
of Kraków in 1072.
During an expedition against the Grand Duchy of
Kiev, Stanislaus became involved in the political situation
of Poland. Known for his outspokenness, he aimed
his attacks at the evils of the peasantry and the king,
especially the unjust wars and immoral acts of King
Boleslaus II. The king first excused himself, then made a
show of penance, then relapsed into his old ways.
Stanislaus continued his open opposition in spite of
charges of treason and threats of death, finally excommunicating
the king. The latter, enraged, ordered soldiers
to kill the bishop. When they refused, the king
killed him with his own hands.
Forced to flee to Hungary, Boleslaus supposedly
spent the rest of his life as a penitent in the Benedictine
abbey in Osiak.
COMMENT
John the Baptist, Thomas Becket, Thomas More and
Stanislaus are a few of the prophets who dared to
denounce corruption in high places. They follow in the
footsteps of Jesus himself, who pointed out the moral
corruption in the religious leadership of his day. It is a
risky business: "Let the one among you who is without
sin be the first to throw a stone..." (John 8:7b).
QUOTE
"Men desire authority for its own sake that they may bear a rule,
command and control other men, and live uncommanded and uncontrolled
themselves" (St. Thomas More, A Dialogue of Comfort).
