GREAT STUKELEY TABLE TENNIS CLUB MAKE SUCCESS OF NEW TOURNAMENT
Great Stukeley Table Tennis Club decided to raise the profile of table tennis in this region by running
an open ranking tournament. This means that players from all over the country can enter and gain
ranking points depending on how well they do. It was also an opportunity for youngsters from our club
to try out against opponents from other regions and to be inspired by seeing some of the top
competitors play.
The Urban & Civic Hunts 2 Star Open took place in St. Ives on Saturday 1st September and attracted
a full house of entries in the 9-table venue The Burgess Hall. There was a very good prize fund of
£600 cash plus £200 of Topspin Sports vouchers across 7 events: Men’s Singles, Women’s Singles,
Mixed Banded Singles (excludes any men over 2750 points), Veterans, Junior Boys (under 18s),
Junior Girls and Mixed Cadets (under 15s).
Three of the club’s youngsters took part James Kelly (11), Abbie Stacey (12) and Matthew Pryke who
at 9 years old was the youngest competitor in the tournament. Abbie came third in the Junior Girls
which was played as a round robin. The boys did not get through the group stages but really enjoyed
their day of play. Amongst our adult members, Simon Pryke, Matthew’s father, made it through to the
quarter finals of the Veterans only to be knocked out by another club member Mirek Pazdzior. Mirek
was then dispatched by Steven Horsfield the number 3 seed.
All in all it was a successful tournament with Chris Doran the England No 6 from Northamptonshire
winning the Men’s Singles and Sussex player Kinga Oryl winning the Women’s Singles. A summary of
results can be found below.
