and incentives.

Berlin has a new platform -

“BERLIN - Green Meetings”

An overview of environmentally-friendly providers

The growth in environmentally aware practices is a global trend - in the travel industry, too. This positive development also

increases demand for environmentally friendly venues and accommodation. Conventions, meetings and incentive trips have

an impact on the environment. Participants frequently travel large distances and use transfers between their accommodation

and the venue. This leads to CO2 emissions. Furthermore, vast amounts of paper, water and electricity are consumed by

the hotels and the event venue.

Various Berlin providers are aware of these problems and are increasingly offering eco-friendly services. The Berlin

Convention Offi ce (BCO) has responded to this trend by creating a unique website.

Numerous Berlin providers are posted on the “BERLIN – Green Meetings” platform, who have already implemented ecologically

sustainable practices and have undertaken to make responsible use of natural resources in order to benefi t the environment.

With this database the city of Berlin takes the lead on the global stage. Users are not only given a detailed overview of

the various service providers but are also furnished with interesting facts about green Berlin.

Further information is available on the new website:

Through the turmoil of the 20th century, Germany has

emerged as a powerful, confident nation and, with the

memory of the wall that divided Berlin into east and

west still fresh in the national consciousness, continues

to be the driving force towards greater European

integration. The German people enjoy a reputation for

accuracy, precision and efficiency – words often used to

describe their excellent cars – although an equally

enduring image is of lederhosen-clad Bavarians hoisting

beer steins at Munich’s famous Oktoberfest. Neither of

these stereotypes reflects the diversity of Germany’s

towns and cities. From romantic Heidelberg, the

medieval Nuremberg of Dürer and the Weimar of Goethe

and the Bauhaus, to the lively port cities of Bremen and

Hamburg, the financial center of Frankfurt and

revitalized cities of the former east like Dresden.

Overshadowing them all is the cosmopolitan decadence

of Berlin, where bureaucrats of the new capital rub

shoulders with artists and techno club-goers. The

German landscape is similarly varied. In the south, the

Alps attract ski-lovers in winter and hiking enthusiasts

in summer, who come to explore the scenic lakes and

atmospheric castles here and in the Black Forest.

Watersports are another summer pastime, and in the

north, the island of Rugen with its majestic white cliffs

and coastal towns like Wilhelmshaven offer terrific

facilities for adventures on the North Sea.

Flying with the Candy Bomber

During the Berlin Airlift of 1948-49, pilots began tossing gum and chocolate

bars tied in handkerchiefs overboard to the children below – and the rest,

as they say, was history. These famed DC-3s soon became synonymous with

friendship and perseverance in

post-war Berlin. Now, a company

called Air Service Berlin is offering

tours aboard a beautifully restored

DC-3 “Candy Bomber” original.

Everything from the seat cushions

to the pilot's uniform gives the

passengers a feel for that heroic,

Berliner past. It’s a sightseeing tour

of the German capital that’s truly

unique, giving your group the

feeling of a journey through time. At an altitude of 600 meters, you and

your fellow passengers (25 maximum) will have a chance to experience

Berlin from a completely new and unexpected perspective. Go to www. for more information.

About Berlin

Berlin, one of Europe’s most exciting cities, has

developed into an international exhibition and

congress metropolis over the last few years, and is

being viewed increasingly in the trade fair and

congress sector as a shop window between Eastern

and Western Europe. The city is the center of a united

Europe and is becoming more and more frequently

the venue for high-ranking medicine, trade and

economic congresses, providing a platform for

communication and knowledge transfer. It is

therefore no surprise that Berlin, as Germany’s

biggest conference and congress location, was able

to improve its position in the ranking of organized

trade congresses and is 4th in terms of the

association conventions, according to the ICCA

(International Congress and Convention Association)

statistics for 2009.

125 Years on the Kurfürstendamm

Created in 1542, originally as a bridleway leading from

the Berlin Stadtschloss to the Jagdschloss Grunewald,

the Kurfürstendamm marked the center of West Berlin

during the period of the Berlin Wall and is today one of

the most popular shopping streets in Berlin. In 2011 this

Berlin boulevard, steeped as it is in tradition, will actually

celebrate its 125th anniversary, because its “birthday“

has been officially established as 5th May 1886, the day

on which the first steam tram ran along it. The countdown

to “125 Years on the Kurfürstendamm“ started on

January 1st 2011 – as of this date there will be exactly

125 days to go to the start of the big celebrations in May.
