The Hyde Park Art Center aims to develop artists at all levels. This summer you’ll see
this at work in our galleries: The bi-annual exhibition, Ground Floor, showcases some of
the best artists who have recently emerged from Chicago’s five MFA programs; Front
and Center, highlights work by artists in our Center Program (see page 6); and a solo
show, Woven Gardens, Shredded Shadows, displays textile work by Ani Afshar, an artist
and Art Center faculty member who had her first exhibition at the Hyde Park Art Center
25 years ago (see page 13). At the same time, budding young artists will develop their
skills all summer in Creativity Camps (see page 9) and classes.
EXHIBITIONS
Watie White: The Chicago Project
FOYER PROJECT SPACE | March 18 – October 21
The Chicago Project by Omaha-based artist Watie White, transforms traditional linoleum prints into near
billboard-sized vinyl images. Co-organized with Jim Duignan of the Stockyard Institute, this exhibition is held
in conjunction with an artist exchange between the Art Center and Union for Contemporary Art (Omaha),
which will host Art Center resident artist collaborative G.E.E.E. in June 2012.
The Hairy Blob
GALLERY 1 & 2, THE JACKMAN GOLDWASSER CATWALK GALLERY &
THE CLEVE CARNEY GALLERY | April 22 – July 29
Traditional concepts of time are challenged through the new works in video, sculpture, drawing, installation,
movement, and sound on view in Hairy Blob. Rather than deal with time in terms of memory or nostalgia,
the participating artists—Becky Alprin, Nadav Assor, Deborah Boardman, Lauren Carter, Ashley Hunt in
collaboration with Taisha Paggett, Sarah FitzSimons, Judith Leemann, Kirsten Leenaars, Faheem Majeed,
and Emily Newman—probe a wide range of ideas about the interdependence of concrete materiality and
temporal existence. The Hairy Blob is curated by Adelheid Mers, an artist and faculty member at the School of
the Art Institute of Chicago. Exhibition Design by Tristan Sterk and Jessica Westbrook and Adam Trowbridge
designed and coordinated the Asteroid Belt, an ever-changing online catalog available at www.hairyblob.net.
For more information about some of the projects in The Hairy Blob and the related artist residency see page 6.
Melissa Oresky: Trail
GALLERY 5 | May 6 – August 19
Trail follows a winding path through abstract painter Melissa Oresky’s growing visual language in works
on paper and video. Along with nearly 40 painted collages, the exhibition premieres the artist’s first work in
animation (with sound design by Zak Boerger) setting in motion the layered structures common in her
paintings, drawings, and collage work.
Ani Afshar: Woven Gardens, Shredded Shadows
GALLERY 4 | May 20 – September 2
The solo exhibition of never before seen work by Ani Afshar spans decades of acclaimed landscape tapestries
and debuts her new experimental installations incorporating collected objects, tulle, and shadows. The exhibition
is curated by Frank Connett in consultation with Richard Born and will be accompanied by a catalogue including
an essay by art historian and critic, Dennis Adrian. The catalogue is made possible with the support of the
Walter and Karla Goldschmidt Foundation.
Front & Center:
curators, critics, artists and dealers. The exhibition features artwork in various media by Paul Branton, Charles
Heppner, Tulika Ladsariya, Jan Lindell, Ted Michelletti, Kristin Nason, Barlow Nelson, Diane Ponder, Melody
Saraniti, Garland Martin Taylor, Vanessa Vargas, and Mark Yee. For more information about The Center
THE RESIDENCY
Nadav Assor, Stills from Strip / Lakeshore East, 2012, time delayed panoramic video, 1 hour 28 minutes
Meet our Summer Resident Artists!
Between May and July four artists
featured in the group exhibition
Hairy Blob will call the Art Center
home, taking up residence in
Studios 6 and 7. Be sure to check
out their projects!
From May 25–June 29, L.A.- and
Chicago-based artists Ashley Hunt
and Taisha Paggett will create a
new artwork in collaboration with a
group of Chicago-area youth and
community members who will
become the project’s directors.
Beginning with a workshop, the
project culminates in two weeks
of artmaking, cooperation, and
dialogue, with the aim of harnessing
the collective power of human
energy through a process that
explores personal and collective
labor.
Chicago-based artist Kirsten
Leenaars turns the camera around,
creating a sci-fi movie about daily
life at the Hyde Park Art Center
between June 15 and July 15. Staff,
teaching artists, board members,
other resident artists, and visitors
are invited to participate as lay
performers, while Leenaars acts as
director, guiding performers from
scene to scene, improvising around
short scripts that are shaped by
daily events. During the residency
period, roles and relationships
unfold, revealing each person’s
place within an evolving picture of
the Art Center where time has collapsed.
The video will be edited
and exhibited as part of Hairy Blob
from July 15 to July 29. Follow the
process of her project via the
storyboard presented in Gallery 1.
Finally, between July 6 and July
20, inter-media artist Nadav Assor,
in collaboration with Tel Avivbased
sound artist Daniel
Davidovsky, will create a new
video and sound performance for
the Jackman Goldwasser Catwalk
Gallery. In his most recent body of
work Strip, Assor traverses multiple
paths in time and place through a
unique landscape that has been
completely transformed by manmade
structures and presented in
panoramic video. This new performance
titled Stripping takes the
essential process and panoramic
audio-visual output of the Strip
projects and manifests them in real
time and scale. While in residence,
Assor and Davidovsky will be
preparing for a live outdoor performance
on July 20 and will talk
about their unique approach to
technology and art on July 12 —
you’re invited.
The Center Program
Front and Center
The Art Center’s newest program is
designed to challenge a group of
twelve artists to develop a body of
work over 6 months, in preparation
for an exhibition in our main
gallery called Front and Center.
For this pilot program the group
met every two weeks, receiving
guidance from visiting arts professionals
such as Susan Snodgrass,
Annie Morse, Dawoud Bey, Juan
Angel Chávez, Jim Duignan, Jim
Dempsey, and Tricia Van Eck. With
access to Art Center studio space,
regular critical discussions, and a
network of peers, Center Program
artists have grown as artists, people,
and professionals. We invite
you to join us for the exhibition
opening on Saturday, August 4th,
from 3–5pm. Front and Center will
feature work by Center Program
artists Paul Branton, Vanessa
Georg Vargas, Charles Heppner,
Tulika Ladsariya, Jan Lindell, Ted
Micheletti, Kristin Nason, Barlow
Nelson, Diane Ponder, Melody
Saraniti, Garland Taylor, and Mark
Yee. Applications for the next cycle
of The Center Program (starting
in January 2013) will be available
online through the Art Center website
during the Fall 2012 Quarter.
The graphite pencil is the simplest, yet
arguably the most demanding of drawing
media. Through the purity of pencil
students of any level can develop sensitivity,
conviction, and a profound physical
connection with the seen world. To
understand and exploit the complex play
between perceived depth and abstract
surface, students will learn how to see
the world as a field of color relationships
rather than as a collection of discrete
objects. Later in the course we can
incorporate ink wash with pencil for
tonal drawings. For the first day of class
please bring #2b graphite pencils, 80 lb
drawing pad, about 11 x 17; hard eraser,
and pencil sharpener.
Calling urban gardeners, green thumbs,
and neighbors! Learn how to grow and
(fingers crossed!) harvest tomatoes with
hands-on experience at HPAC’s rooftop
tomato garden. as well as learn how to
plant, care for, and propagate a lowmaintenance
garden in HPAC’s perennial
gardens. Participants will also learn how
to design a container or a garden. Use
the GEEE-Cycle station to plant or make
your own self-watering containers for
herbs, annuals, and food. Help GEEE—a
plant and gift exchange located on the
2nd floor of the Art Center—reveal and
develop a viable neighborly garden.
