Bela Bela meaning “boiling-boiling” referring to
the hot springs which are the town’s icon, the
springs were discovered in the early 1800s and
were named Bela-Bela. Since 1830’s people
have been coming to Bela Bela to wallow in the
mineral baths which contain healing properties,
today the area is a popular health and holiday
destination, a mere 103km from Pretoria and
8km off the N1 north on the R516.
The town is vibrant, a wonderful weekend
destination for all who seek to escape to the
tranquility of the bushveld. Bela Bela has a rich
history including the Anglo Boer War battle
site, the quarry where the stone for the Union
Building was quarried.
The lively area of Bela Bela has so much to offer,
adventure with elephants, cheetah interaction at
Zebula, world class golf courses, Bela Mall and
the Waterfront Complex offers retail and dining
experience with a difference.
PLACES OF INTEREST
Hot Springs
The mineral springs that flows out of the Earth
produces 22000 of liters per hour with an
average temperature of 52°C gave rise to the
establishment of the town of Warmbaths - today
called Bela-Bela (“boiling boiling”). The Hot
Springs were discovered by the community that
resides in the area in the 1800s.
The water from these springs is rich in sodium
chloride, calcium carbonate and other salts.
Although contemporary medicine has been slow
to establish the scientific basis for the benefits of
submersion in mineral-rich hot springs water, a
long history of use verifies its soothing beneficial
effects. It is widely recognized that a tranquil
hot springs soak provides relief from the pain of
stressed muscles and tired joints.
the name for the town and municipality and
refers to the highly lucrative iron ore reef first
