Dovercourt Recreation Association
(DRA) is a not-for-profit charitable
organization (Registered Charity No.
11944 4263 RR0001) dedicated to
enhancing the quality of life in our
community through recreation
programs. In 1983, the City of Ottawa
began work on the planning of a new
community centre to replace the
Westboro Community Centre. DRA
was actively involved in the process,
and when the new centre opened in
1987, Dovercourt was given the
responsibility of managing the new
centre through a service agreement.
While we are part of the City of
Ottawa’s recreation system, DRA is
empowered to choose what
programs it runs to meet the
community’s needs, and how those
programs are delivered.
Our motto is "A Community Working
For the Community, Une
communauté qui travaille pour la
communauté".
Staff, volunteers, clients, local
community groups and businesses
working together…that’s Dovercourt!
Strength through partnerships:
We work with so many partners and
we have tried to include as many as
we can in this Annual Report, but
please accept our apologies that we
could not fit in every partner.
Building a healthy, active and engaged community through recreation.

President’s Report
This was a very special year for Dovercourt: for the first time in our
now 27 years of operations, we were able to complete a major
building renovation and expansion. This included a new family
change room, an expanded fitness centre, repurposing our
preschool room, and relocating our kiln room to the upper level
of the building to a new arts dedicated studio. As with most
renovation projects, this was not without bumps along the way.
We thank our clients for their patience as we maintained operations
throughout, our staff for being so flexible and working through
noise, dust and some confusion, and our project team and
contractor for doing beautiful work in our busy and much
James Wishart, President
loved recreation centre. And we are not done yet. Our
Association will work hard in 2015 to fundraise the $1.5 million
required to complete phase 2 of our expansion, that will see an additional 2400 square feet
of space on the upper level of the building to create new program space. We are
determined to complete the expansion works in 2016, and look forward to improving our
ability to serve our growing community, and of course, all ages and abilities every day.
While rebuilding our facilities has been the
major focus of the year and will remain our
key focus for two more, we have many other
successes to celebrate as we report back to
the community on 2014.
3
President’s Report
Our vision of success includes five elements:
Our Clients:
Dovercourt is a proactive, innovative and creative social enterprise, and is our clients’
first choice for quality recreation programs and services at good value. Every day
Dovercourt helps people to pursue their passions, achieve their goals and connect
with their community. Our clients feel welcome and well served, and are enriched
by their experiences at our facilities.
Our Community:
Dovercourt is a responsive, inclusive and progressive organization that leads the
way in promoting and facilitating a healthy, active lifestyle for all. Dovercourt listens
to and informs itself about its community, and acts on this research to provide better
service. We partner with organizations of all kinds and enthusiastically share
knowledge, insights and resources so as to achieve a healthy, active and engaged
community.
President’s Report
President’s Report
Our People
Dovercourt is a highly desirable place to work and volunteer that attracts and
develops talented, engaged and compassionate citizens and leaders. Meaningful,
fulfilling work and shared values motivate and inspire our dedicated and long-serving
cadre of staff and volunteers.
Our Facilities:
Dovercourt’s recreation facilities are fully accessible, welcoming and inclusive. Our
facilities and programs adapt and expand to meet the changing needs of our
community.
Our City:
Dovercourt is a leader and a highly sought after partner for the City of Ottawa and
others who are working to build our City’s capacity as a healthy, active, inclusive and
caring community.
The Annual Report that follows shows that we have made
significant accomplishments in each of these target areas in
2014, and at our recent strategic retreat we celebrated
these results, reviewed how our community is changing
and growing, and identified new strategies and ideas to
respond to those challenges. As President, I am very proud
of the team of volunteers and staff that I work with to
achieve our mission of a healthy, active and engaged
community. In particular, I would like to thank our
departing board members who have completed our
maximum term of six years on our board: Susan Fletcher,
Past President, Jan O’Donnell, Past Treasurer, and Marc
Lachance, Board member. They have all contributed great
wisdom and insights during their time with us on the
Board, and we will miss them at the Board table, and look
forward to seeing them at the Centre.
I look forward to working with our returning and new board members to ensure that
DRA does not lose its way as it grows, that it remains an inclusive, sharing and caring
organization. I look to our clients, partners, and the members of our association to hold
us to account.
