Dear Community Members and Visitors,
A MESSAGE FROM THE PARKS & RECREATION DIRECTOR
The end of winter is here, and spring awaits. As I look back on the last six months of fall and winter, I am amazed with the completion
and implementation of our new programs and look forward to the spring and summer as we gear up to offer even more opportunities for the
community and new accommodations for visitors.
At the Zoo, the new Watershed Heroes Project vaulted attendance to record levels. Zoo staff look to build upon that success with the
construction and opening of the eagle aviary. The otter and salmon exhibits have really added a new element to our Zoo. The eagle aviary,
along with those exhibits, will provide years of enjoyment and education to community members and visitors of our area.
In our Recreation Division, we are leaping into a new partnership with Redwood Empire Little League Baseball. Parks & Recreation staff
and volunteers with Redwood Empire will be retrofitting Kennedy/Hartman fields to accommodate little league games. This spring, the little
leaguers of Eureka and surrounding area will have another complex to hone their skills and prepare for the big leagues.
In our Parks Division, we are about to jump into the opening of a new dog park. On Watson Street behind General Hospital and adjacent
to the Senior Wood Lot, the City will be opening a new dog park. With the much appreciated efforts of the Eureka Dog Park Committee and
Redwood Community Action Agency, the dream will become a reality this spring.
In our Environmental Programs and Harbor Divisions, we are bounding forward on the development of the Eureka Waterfront Trail. The
last pieces of the pre-construction work are in process. The plans for the remaining phases should be complete by July and permitting should
be complete by January 2016. The remaining three phases of the trail will be combined into one project, and construction is tentatively
scheduled to begin in April 2016. The future looks bright as Eureka will soon be enjoying a breathtaking 6.3 mile contiguous waterfront trail
for community members and visitors to walk and bike.
So as we enter into spring, we will continue to make the community our number one priority. We will explore creative
ways to provide programming that will enhance existing opportunities and create innovative prospects.
Sincerely,
Miles Slattery
EXPLORE EUREKA - OUTDOOR PROGRAMS
Explore Eureka’s Featured Park
Sequoia Park, originally known as Forest Park, was
created in 1904 to retain a piece of forest in the City of
Eureka for residents and visitors to enjoy. Sequoia Park’s
redwood forest stands as a testament to the value of
Eureka having natural
places available in the City
for outdoor recreation.
Today the Redwoods
of Humboldt County are
known the world over as
being some of the largest
and oldest living organisms
on the planet. Walking
deep in the park where the
redwoods block out the sun
allow Eureka residents the
opportunity to experience
deep rooted nature while
only minutes from their
homes.
WATERFRONT TRAILS
History is being made, as the City of Eureka proudly
announces that plans have been solidified and funding has been
secured to begin construction of the Eureka Waterfront Trail.
With a tentative completion date of 2018, this trail will offer
members of the community the opportunity to walk, bike or run
from one end of the city to the other. With endless wildlife,
recreational, interpretive and transportation opportunities, this
community milestone is sure to change the face of our
community. The Eureka Waterfront Trail will be divided up into
the following phases, which when connected, will make up the
6.3 mile contiguous trail.
The
Hikshari' Trail
Open to the
public in 2012,
this 1.5 mile
stretch of bay
front trail begins
at Elk River
Parkway and
runs all along the
bay to the foot of
Truesdale.
Drawing people from all over Humboldt County to hike, bike,
run, paddle and picnic, the Hikshari’ Trail is an ideal location for
bird watching and is the home to several Explore Eureka
Outdoor Recreation Programs. The trail also features
interpretive signage covering marsh reconstruction, migrant and
vagrant bird species in the willow patches, Humboldt Bay
geology, railroad history, Wiyot village life, Elk River sand spit
formation and marine life, dune plant ecology and plant and
animal identification.
Phase A Picking up where the Hikshari’ ends at Truesdale St.,
this next phase will run behind the Bayshore Mall and along
Humboldt Bay to the foot of Del Norte St., landing right at the
Del Norte St. Fishing Pier. This phase of the trail will also
feature a variety of wildlife viewing, interpretative and
recreational opportunities; including outdoor fitness equipment
periodically placed throughout the trail.
Phase B Running directly adjacent to Railroad Ave. and
Waterfront Dr., this portion of the Waterfront Trail begins at Del
Norte St. and ends at the foot of C St., providing visitors with
the unique experience of running, jogging or walking along the
Eureka marina and beautiful downtown Eureka Boardwalk.
Phase C The final phase of the Eureka Waterfront Trail is
located along the south shore of North Humboldt Bay, north of
Highway 255 and then follows the south side of the Eureka
Slough, passing underneath the bridge decks of Highway 101,
providing the only alternative route in the City for pedestrians
and non-motorized vehicles to cross US 101 without having to
physically attempt to cross through traffic, eventually ending at
Tydd St. This phase will also feature a variety of wildlife,
interpretation and recreational opportunities! For more
information visit EurekaParksAndRecreation.com.
Providing engaging and active opportunities for
the members of our community is a critical part in
offering a high quality of life for our residents.
The recreation team takes fun very seriously.
Their goal isn’t simply to provide opportunities for
residence and visitors to recreate; they aim to
create impactful experiences where people walk
away with a great memory and a stronger sense of
community than when they started.
One of the ways they work towards that goal is
creating new programs and events that allow
residents and visitors to engage with their
community while having fun!
These new programs are based on community
needs and suggestions, changing trends in health
and fitness, as well as constant re-assessment of
the types of programs and activities we can offer
throughout our developing parks, trails and
facilities.
Once a new program is properly brainstormed
with the team & vetted for risk management,
community appeal, costs, and fun level; the work
begins to create a layout, set dates & appropriate
fees, secure and train staff, develop program
registration and create a marketing campaign.
Once the actual program begins, it’s the
recreation team’s job to continuously mentor and
inspire staff, ensure both the safety and program
quality of the activities, as well as continuously
troubleshoot any potential issues, all the while
adjusting to the program’s evolving needs.
With multiple programs taking place all
throughout the year, the recreation team serves
hundreds of community members from the ages
0-99 each and every day.
It’s clear that having fun is a full time job!
In operation since
1907, the Sequoia Park
Zoo has long been
considered one of the
most important cultural
facilities in the area. The
Zoo is committed to
providing a high quality
facility that offers not
only the care of a variety
of animals, but also an
opportunity for visitors to
experience a greater
appreciation of the value
and diversity of our planet's life forms.
Nationally accredited by:
The Zoo's goals include conservation,
education and recreation. The Sequoia Park
Zoo is proud to be one of the smallest
institutions that has been accredited by the
Association of Zoos & Aquariums. Visit our
website, sequoiaparkzoo.net, for more information about the Zoo. Contact
the Zoo Ticket Kiosk at 441-4263 or email zooattendant@sequoiaparkzoo.net
Zoos play an important role in the conservation of wildlife habitat and
endangered species, but did you know that many zoos around the world help
conserve resources in other ways? Sequoia Park Zoo implements many
green practices and encourages you to do your part to conserve energy and
resources.
Composting: Our keepers compost
gallons of kitchen scraps every week left
over from preparing animal diets as well
as animal manure and bedding, leaves,
sheep wool and grass clippings. This
compost is available to local gardeners for
a small donation. Call 268-5267 or email
zooattendant@sequoiaparkzoo.net to
schedule a pick-up.
Conserving Energy: In all our new
offices and buildings, we have our lights
on timers and motion sensors so they turn
off when the room is not in use. We also
utilize programmable thermostats.
A Green Kitchen: Did you know our café uses environmentally friendly
water cups, coffee cups and to-go containers? We also donate our used
kitchen oil to be turned into biodiesel and use eco-friendly cleaners.
Completing the Loop: Wherever we can, we reuse and recycle. Instead of
throwing away cardboard boxes and egg cartons, we first reuse them for our
animals’ enrichment treats. We encourage visitors to return their Zoo maps
so another visitor can reuse the same map. Our facility uses products with
high recycled content, completing the loop by creating demand for recycled
products. We have recycle bins throughout the Zoo so visitors can recycle
their cans and bottles, but we go even farther than that—we recycle
cardboard, e-waste and more—pretty much everything possible!
Year-Round
Volunteer Opportunities
Want to work more closely with the animals?
This year-round program offers individuals ages 16
and up the opportunity to take part in some of the
Zoo’s day-to-day activities, like feeding, observing,
cleaning and handling animals. There are also
opportunities for giving demonstrations and helping
out at our special events. This position is for a
volunteer interested in a longer commitment and
requires training. To learn more, contact the Volunteer Coordinator
at 441-4205 or by email at volunteer@sequoiaparkzoo.net.
G.O. Program
The General Observation program (G.O.)
is a volunteer opportunity for those
interested in observing and gaining some
genuine zookeeper insight. Volunteers for
the G.O. program help our zookeepers
observe and record animal behavior. In
fact, depending upon which animal you may
be observing, your record keeping could
potentially serve as a key component to one
of our many published studies. This
opportunity is for a volunteer interested in
at least 5-week commitment and requires
some training—there is no experience
required. To learn more, contact the Volunteer Coordinator at
441-4205 or by email at volunteer@sequoiaparkzoo.net.
Special Event Volunteers
The Zoo Foundation hosts several special fundraising events
each year and we always need help with running activity stations
for the kids, serving up concessions and more. From Party for the
Planet and Boo at the Zoo to Zootini and Brew at the Zoo, volunteering
on our special events team for Sequoia Park Zoo Foundation
is an extremely valuable way to make a huge contribution to
the community, and all the funds raised at these events benefit the
animals. Your time commitment can be as little as 4 hours, but it
makes a huge impact! No experience is necessary—we’ll provide
the training and instruction you need. We also have seasonal
mailers and hold various volunteer administration days that are a
great way to meet and work with our extraordinary group of
volunteers and have a great time! Contact the Volunteer Coordinator
at 441-4205 or by email at volunteer@sequoiaparkzoo.net to
learn more.
Keep an eye out for the Super Salmon’s
first comic book to learn how to
become a Watershed Hero.
In 1985, colorectal surgeon
Dr. Gordon Klatt, walked around
the track at Baker Stadium at
the University of Puget Sound in
Tacoma, Washington for 24-
hours in effort to raise funds for
the American Cancer Society.
Throughout the night, people
paid $25 to run or walk 30
minutes with him. He walked
approximately 83 miles and raised $27,000 for cancer research.
Today, there are more than 5,000 Relay for Life events that take place across 20
countries that have raised nearly $5 billion for the American Cancer Society.
On the 30 th Anniversary of Dr. Klatt’s legendary first walk, the City of Eureka is proud
to announce that we will host Relay for Life at Halverson Park in Eureka!
The event has a special Birthday Theme to celebrate 30 years of fighting cancer.
Teams are encouraged to dress up in birthday apparel. The event will also feature a pizza
party, cake walk, glow in the dark scavenger hunts…and more!
For more information about Relay for Life, or how to put a team together, visit
RelayForLife.org/eurekaCA.
Chris Halcomb, who serves as the local Relay for Life events Lead Chair, is
very excited about Relay for Life’s partnership with the City of Eureka; “it’s
great. It’s closer to the city limits, more accessible to everybody in Humboldt,
and creates a new iconic scene; it’s right on the bay, you can’t get better than
that.”
Chris, has been volunteering and participating in a variety of Relay for Life
events over the years; and it’s an issue very close to his heart.
“My mom was diagnosed 30 years ago, before I was even born, it was
something that we didn’t really talk about growing up,” Chris said, “when I
started getting involved in Relay, we had a team in Pacifica, and I asked my
mom to be a part of the team. What I didn’t tell her about beforehand is the
survivor’s lap. She didn’t want to do it, but we got her to, and when she was
making that lap; she just lost it. That was my magic moment. Every person
has theirs when they do Relay, and it’s a moment that sticks with you forever,
and that’s my moment.”
Chair, Chris Halcomb &
mother, Cynthia Halcomb.
