policies h ve re ffirmed the<br />
m ition to ccommod te new<br />
development within current<br />
Green elt ound ries. Housing<br />
intensific tion there<strong>for</strong>e will rem in on the<br />
policy gend just like the need to cur c r on<br />
emissions nd enh nce iodiversity, to stimul te<br />
inclusive economic regener tion nd enh nce<br />
soci l c pit l.<br />
In 2005, the <strong>London</strong> Development Agency nd<br />
Government Office <strong>for</strong> <strong>London</strong> commissioned<br />
Urh hn Ur n <strong>Design</strong> to explore str tegies <strong>for</strong><br />
town centre intensific tion in 10 North <strong>London</strong><br />
town centres. The resulting pu lic tion of the<br />
TEN study emph sised the opportunities <strong>for</strong><br />
incre sing housing density with enh ncement of<br />
the pu lic re lm in town centres through designled<br />
ppro ch. Since its inception in 2008, <strong>Design</strong><br />
<strong>for</strong> <strong>London</strong> h s promoted excellence in housing<br />
design nd pu lic re lm interventions [ ny<br />
p rticul r pu lic tions or projects to mention?].<br />
The commission of the present study, which<br />
investig tes different ur n design scen rios <strong>for</strong><br />
seven town centres in south <strong>London</strong>, fits in this<br />
policy m ition.<br />
The study w s sed on coll or tive rel tionship<br />
with the seven <strong>London</strong> Boroughs involved:<br />
Bromley, Croydon, L m eth, Lewish m, Merton,<br />
Southw rk nd W ndsworth. In e ch of these<br />
Boroughs, l rge sc le town centre regener tion<br />
projects re underw y, inv ri ly with higherdensity<br />
housing s one of their underpinning<br />
elements. However, m ny sm ller nd more<br />
su ur n town centres h ve not seen ch nge<br />
in recent ye rs, despite their good ccessi ility<br />
y pu lic tr nsport nd the often evident need<br />
<strong>for</strong> investment. Such pl ces typify the potenti l<br />
of Outer <strong>London</strong> to contri ute to <strong>London</strong>’s policy<br />
o jectives – potenti l th t h s neither een<br />
fully understood nor sufficiently explored. This<br />
study seeks By to ddressing the opportunities<br />
th t c n e found in these pl ces, the study nd<br />
