Ben Bailey rounds up the Brighton music scene A CRAP NIGHT OUT Sat 6, Green Door Store, 7pm, £5 A cheeky title for a night, but one you might recognise if you were knocking around Brighton in the 90s. Named after some infamous events at The New Kensington, this gig is a memorial for the pub’s former landlord, Miki Hall. Local ska legends Tragic Roundabout have reunited for the occasion and will be joined for a rowdy punk singsong by The Fish Brothers and some Bonzo-esque chap rock from The Don Bradmans. The mischievous Miki was a kind of father figure for the punks and activists that made The Kenny their home. If you were there, you’ll be here. KRISTIN MCCLEMENT Fri 12, One Church, 7.30pm, £donations Elegant but unpretentious, this baptist building should be a great setting for Kristin Mc- Clement’s dramatic folk music. A host of Brighton musicians contributed to the South African singer’s recent debut, released in Feb on local label Willkommen Records. Five years in the making, it’s a richly layered collection of waltzes, marches and gypsytinged ballads, each topped off with vocals that veer between dreamlike whispers and the kind of arch delivery usually associated with chanson. We don’t know if she’s bringing along all the strings and woodwind, but if she can pull off half of what she’s managed to capture on record it’ll be a joy to hear. THE BRAKES Fri 19, Concorde 2, 7pm, £12.50 A welcome return for the Brighton supergroup formed in 2003 from elements of British Sea Power, Electric Soft Parade and The Tenderfoot. While those bands were pretty ambitious in their different ways, Brakes took a more straightforward (and arguably more fun) approach to indie guitar rock. Yet what started as a knockabout side project soon took over when constant touring led to a deal with Rough Trade. While BSP have their own anniversary gig a week before, this one-off hometown show marks ten years since Brakes’ debut Give Blood. Support comes from Rose Elinor Dougall, a former Pipette and Brakes backing vocalist. A proper family reunion. GAPS Wed 24, Hope & Ruin, 8pm, £6 Two friends from Coventry who hooked up years later in Brighton, and whose early demos featured cameos by passing seagulls, Rachel Butt and Ed Critchley never had a masterplan for GAPS. And perhaps their fusion of acoustic and electronic sounds is more unique for not having a fixed destination in mind. Rachel’s sombre guitar and vocals sit well with Ed’s wash of synths and lightfooted beats – like Vashti Bunyan guesting on a Four Tet track. After starting the band almost by accident, they’ve spent a couple of years developing a stage set-up that happily avoids the ‘open laptop, press go’ approach to live electronica. ....37....
