• Help to create happier calmer learning environments
• Help to develop an attentive mind
• Help improve performance academically and in performing elements
Training for groups, classrooms, on one-to-one individual basis or ongoing sessions.
Welcome
… to the latest edition
of Term Talk!
When we devised the theme of
our conference in March, we had
no idea that the UK Government
would so enthusiastically back the
idea of ‘character education’. We
are delighted, of course, and equally
pleased with the response from our
local schools and colleges.
Education Minister Nicky Morgan MP underlined the official support
for young persons’ character development when she joined us to visit
one of our NCS programmes. It was a great day, which reinforced all
our beliefs in the imagination, resourcefulness and sheer ‘grit’ of young
people, as we watched them put the ‘action’ into social action.
The EBP also has an action-packed summer ahead, as we prepare
to unveil our ‘Young Baron’ sculpture on the official Magna Carta
celebration weekend, hold the best ever Lincolnshire Show Schools
Challenge, and partner once again with the Red Arrows for our key
event Red STEM.
There’s plenty more to discover in Term Talk, so read on! If you
have any questions about this or future editions, please contact our
Communications team on 01522 574152.
YOUR
VOICE
– A RESOUNDING
‘YES!’
‘The Personal Party’ carries the day
in mock election with Education
Minister, Nick Boles MP
The inaugural YOUR Voice Conference for
Young People was a great success, with
competing schools and colleges getting to
grips with topical policy issues and the
democratic process.
Stoke Rochford Hall was the suitably aweinspiring
venue where the teams of young
people, each having devised their own political
‘party’, slogan and manifesto, promoted policy
ideas on current issues through debate and
impressive social media campaigns. The day
culminated in a mock election.
Representing North Hykeham Joint Sixth Form,
The Personal Party prevailed in a tight ballot,
with a witty and sophisticated slogan that
pointed to the high standard of thinking on
show: “We’re not left, we’re not right, but we’re
certainly not wrong”.
During the day’s miniature ‘Twitter storm’,
Student Union President at Bishop Grosseteste
University Chris Robertson referred to YOUR
Voice (@yvlincs2015) as a, “Huge step
forward for youth engagement in politics in
Lincolnshire”. All present had to agree! “Every
young person was totally engaged,” said The
EBP CE Elaine Lilley.
Some of the region’s most senior business
people made themselves available to join a
Question Time-style panel including Richard
Davies, Executive Member for Highways and
Transportation at Lincolnshire County Council.
Local MP and Minister of State jointly for the
Department for Business, Innovation and Skills
and the Department for Education Nick Boles
also joined the panel. Educationalist and Labour
parliamentary candidate Dr Jason Pandya-Wood
mentored participants.
GROWING
POTENTIAL
New packages build skills through
unique experiences
This year The EBP launched an exciting portfolio of
products for schools under the banner of Potential for
Growth. Packages cover a variety of subjects and skillsets,
are tailored for age groups through primary and secondary
and adapted to suit individual schools’ requirements.
Here are just a few products trialled recently at local
schools, with some great feedback so far:
GAME OF TWO HALVES
Students investigate roles, responsibilities
and real life situations at a football club,
gaining insight into the business through
a series of practical literacy and numeracy
challenges.
A fantastic morning. It was
great to see all children engaged
in some very purposeful
activities that developed
everyone’s learning
Ben Carver,
The Meadows Primary School
DESTINATION ANYWHERE
Students are taken on a journey to
experience everything involved in planning
an event for a topical occasion or major
venue in the local area, highlighting the
variety of tourism in Lincolnshire.
Children loved the activities
Kate Harrison,
Fishtoft Academy
YOUNG TRADERS
Students work in teams to establish their
own business model. This can be delivered
in school as a full day activity, or as a
series of events over the course of a term.
The students thoroughly
enjoyed the day and the
TALKING GOOD
CHARACTER
The EBP Conference delivered the truth about ‘grit’
RED ARROWS
FLY AGAIN FOR STEM
The theme of The EBP’s annual
conference reflected the UK
Government’s recent drive for ‘character
education’, emphasising qualities like
self-discipline, motivation, honesty and
respect.
Held at the Lincoln Doubletree Hilton
in March, the conference discussed
the value of these qualities and,
importantly, ways to foster them.
Speakers described how experiences
within and beyond the classroom are
key to developing integrity, commitment
and determination – often described as
‘grit’.
Research Associate for the Jubilee
Centre for Character and Virtues, Emma
Taylor delivered a keynote speech on
the value of social action both to the
community and in developing young
character. Emma was joined by #iwill
ambassador Rhiannon Sweeney (left),
who spoke from the heart about the way
involvement in the campaign and social
action has helped her grow as a person:
“I’m passionate about helping others,
and I’m glad I can make a difference
in my community – it’s made me the
person I am today”.
Guest speaker Guy Horridge, of national
educational charity CVQO (above)
talked about the character development
journey through education, while Chris
Baron of Butlins spoke engagingly on
this essential factor in recruitment and
throughout employment.
The conference aimed to inspire
attendees to embed this concept into
their work, via pathways ranging from
sport and music, teaching character
education as a stand-alone subject, to
volunteering in the community.
Sixth Form Learning Mentor at King
Edward VI Grammar School in Louth,
Jessica Mackett praised the conference
and the value she was able to take back
to her students. Anne Scott from the
Department of Work and Pensions
agreed, adding, “The EBP provides a
good network of support for the young
people I work with”.
The EBP has many products and
services supporting character
education. To learn how they
could benefit your students,
LEADING FROM THE FRONT
Beth Curtis joins The EBP’s leadership team
The star-studded ‘Red STEM’
event, Spark Engineering Festival
and forthcoming Construction
Week combine to inspire
students’ scientific interest.
The EBP and RAF Scampton team up
again on an event celebrating science,
technology, engineering and mathematics
(STEM) subjects on 8 July.
Red STEM will give 150 students exclusive
access to 20 hands-on activities and
exhibits. All have the aim of showing
STEM subjects’ real-world applications
and bring them to life. Exhibitors ranging
from the Universities of Lincoln and
Sheffield to the NHS and BAE Systems
will present experiences from a mobile
chemotherapy unit to a 3D printer.
National celebrities Jason Bradbury and
Carol Vorderman have both confirmed
their attendance, adding touches of
glamour to the occasion. The EBP’s STEM
Coordinator Paula Bailey commented,
“It’s a thrill to be working with famous
experts like Jason and Carol, who will
really help to communicate the excitement
of science, technology, engineering and
maths to students across the county”.
In another recent success, The EBP, City
of Lincoln Council and the Lincolnshire
Chamber of Commerce supported the
Spark Engineering Festival at Lincoln
Cathedral. The festival was organised
by local engineering firms including
Siemens, Micrometric and Dynex. Over
400 young people experienced 11 handson
activities offered by local engineering
firms and colleges alongside The EBP.
The next opportunity for young people to
engage with real-world applications for
STEM subjects is The EBP’s joint event
with Lincoln Group Training Association
(LGTA), Construction Week in autumn.
Primary students have the chance to
‘build’ skills from stonemasonry to
decorating and joinery on 29 September,
with secondary schools rolling up their
sleeves on 30 September and 1 October.
“building partnerships”, particularly between educational institutions and business.
Within The EBP, Beth manages two delivery teams across a range of products, and
leads on the new packages of EBP products currently being rolled out to schools
More young people take advantage of one-off opportunities
The EBP’s Investors In Education (IIE) Awards celebrate local
businesses that exceed expectations, to offer inspiring work
experience opportunities to students. The awards recognise that
companies which schools find easy and rewarding to work with
can make a real difference for young people considering future
career options.
Pete Cohen is the perfect person to talk about people and
organisations going ‘the extra mile’. One of the country’s leading
motivational speakers, he coaches top business leaders as
well as sporting stars like Sally Gunnell, Ronnie O’Sullivan and
Arsenal FC to achieve their best. Known as one of television’s
most motivational personalities, Pete has worked on all major
channels, including starring as GMTV’s resident life coach.
SEEDS OF SUCCESS
Lincolnshire students ‘show’ off great ideas for agriculture
The Lincolnshire Show Schools’ Challenge
has been coordinated for eight years
now by The EBP in association with the
Lincolnshire Agricultural Society (LAS).
It introduces young people to innovative
thinking for, and greater understanding of
the agricultural industry.
Open to primary, secondary and special
schools, the challenge falls under The
EBP’s Potential for Growth brand.
Student teams select a food, farming,
or sustainability focused challenge,
ultimately presenting their findings to a
panel of experts at the Lincolnshire Show
(24-25 June).
More than 400 young people from over
40 schools across the county will
compete for the title of Schools’
Challenge Champion.
The challenge is also a prime opportunity
for local businesses to demonstrate their
commitment both to the industry and to
young people’s development. Sponsors of
this year’s challenge include The Willows
Garden Centre, Association of Drainage
Authorities, Woldmarsh, Mouchel,
Farmacy PLC and E. Park and Sons.
Sponsoring companies also work with
young people through mentorship
in schools or workshops on the day.
Students prepare the projects at school,
with an expert mentor assigned by LAS.
The teams hold their own exhibition at the
Show and discuss their work with judges,
teachers, students and the public.
Alongside the Schools Challenge, The
EBP holds a professional development
workshop for teachers to better equip
them with resources for the classroom.
The role of the new Community Coordinators (Cocos) is to
understand a school’s objectives, then identify and tailor
a mix of products to support their achievement. Activities
can be customised to suit whole schools, year groups,
classes or for small groups with particular needs.
The new Primary, Bronze, Silver and Gold packages
include activity days, competitions and awards, industry
focus events, high-level lectures and one-to-one
employability support sessions.
Programmes are designed to meet the holistic needs of
students, support the curriculum and assist each school’s
quest for excellence. For 15 years, The EBP has delivered
services to schools and young people across Lincolnshire,
Rutland, Leicestershire and Northamptonshire.
