“In the midst of all these physical 

changes, we remain steadfastly focused on 

following God’s will and ACV’s mission.” 

We are off and running in 2015. The face of 

Advent Christian Village is changing. Construction 

began last fall on the Taylor Commons project 

and is now in high gear. Renovations at the 

Village Church are also forthcoming, which will improve and better 

serve the congregation and staff. Projects like the condominiums, to 

be located near River Woods and Copeland Community Center, as 

well as an exciting new county library that will include our own ACV 

Archives will begin in the near future. In short, there is a lot of physical 

change. This is all part of the strategic plan to enhance ACV’s services 

and programs, as well as the beauty of the Village, and to attract new 

members. 

Yes, the face of ACV may be changing, but its heart will not. In the 

midst of all these physical changes, we remain steadfastly focused on 

following God’s will and ACV’s mission, and ever improving the service and support of the members and 

staff. This is the very core of the work we do.

President’s Report 


The Year in Review 

Dear Friend, 

A 

large myth is being spread throughout 

our society. I can tell when people have bought 

into it when I hear them say: “Me? No, I’m not 

ready to live in a retirement community. I’m still 

healthy and active!” or “I’ll live longer if I remain in my 

own home. You don’t have any control of your life if you 

live in a retirement community.” Or my favorite: “People in 

retirement communities just sit around and wait to die.” 

In many cases, reality is the opposite of what most people 

envision. While most retirement communities do have facilities 

to care for those who are frail, that is only one aspect of 

today’s retirement community, which is modern, wellnessoriented, 

and activity-filled. But many also offer meaningful 

pursuits, such as opportunities for learning, spiritual growth 

and volunteerism. What the average person on the outside of 

communities like Advent Christian Village doesn’t realize is 

that when new members are polled, the overwhelming response 

is some version of “I wish I had moved here years ago.” 

A six-year study showed that it can be hard for senior 

adults living in their own homes to stay active and social as 

spouses pass, children leave home and friends move away. 

Isolation leads to depression, illness, and increased risk 

for physical and psychological effects, including cognitive 

decline. 

Living in a community like Dowling Park, activity is 

encouraged and is more easily attained, even by those with 

mobility issues. The natural result is a continued (or restored) 

vibrant life. And this promotes wellness and longevity. 

Generally, people actually live longer, happier lives in retirement 

communities.

When a senior adult moves to a retirement community, 

they are immediately surrounded by a large group of new 

friends from all backgrounds who have many things in 

common. They are only as isolated as they choose to be. The 

focus is on quality of life. Their choices abound. We’ve seen 

many new members dramatically blossom after moving to 

ACV. 

The truth of today’s retirement communities is that they 

can provide the beginning of an enriching new life full of 

activity, safety, security, new friends and opportunities. It’s 

a society of like-minded individuals looking out for each 

other and growing through new stages of life together. It is 

freedom. 

I encourage you not to let your preconceived ideas keep 

you from the benefits of living in a community like this. We 

would love to have you visit to see the reality of what Advent 

Christian Village has to offer you or your loved one. Please 

contact us to make arrangements. 

It is a true pleasure to be able to serve the Lord here 

in Dowling Park, and to have the opportunity to see many 

members blossom after becoming involved in life at the 

Village. The fact is that many positive things that happen 

here would not be possible without the generosity of many 

faithful supporters. I want to pause to thank you for your 

interest in and support of ACV, whether that support is 

through your prayers, volunteering your time or giving of 

your resources. It cannot be overstated that you truly keep 

the ministry of ACV alive and thriving. 

Lawrence House, the two-story apartment building 

located across Dowling Park Dr. from the Phillips 

Center, will offer eight modern rental apartments. Its 

construction has been watched with interest and anticipation 

by Village members and visitors. 

As exterior paint is applied, the first Taylor Commons 

row house really starts to look more like a finished 

product. Drywall has been installed inside and cabinets 

and fixtures are next on the list. It won’t be long before 

moving vans will be parked at the curb. 

In some ways, 2014 was a year where we slowed 

to catch our breath, and in others, we have ramped 

up to expand and grow. What makes ACV special 

is the sense of ministry and the people who live and 

serve here, but it is also true that in order to remain viable 

as an organization we must update and expand. So we are 

working on accomplishing the goals laid out in last year’s 

Master Development Plan and the projects unveiled as part 

of the 100th Anniversary Capital Campaign. The plan calls 

for modest growth with enhanced and additional housing 

options, as well as some limited support facilities. 

We are well on our way with the first project, Taylor 

Commons. As I write this, the framing is complete and 

roofing in process on Lawrence House and the first fourapartment 

row house. Framing is nearly complete on Cleo’s 

Meeting House. The expectation is for the row house to 

be finished before Summer 2015 and Lawrence House and 

Cleo’s Meeting House to be completed during the Summer. 

We were able to begin these projects because of the 

generous response we received for the 100th Anniversary 

Capital Campaign. I’m pleased to announce that we have 

reached the $3.4 million goal in gifts and pledges. But as 

is the case in so many things, prices have risen and pushed 

costs above projections. There remain a number of memorial 

opportunities and we would love to speak with anyone 

who would still like to participate. Likewise, you can become 

an honor roll member or purchase a commemorative brick.

Dr. Maria L. Gonzalez, a licensed geriatrician, has been 

seeing patients at the Copeland Clinic and Good Samaritan 

Center since June 2014. 

The next project to get underway from the campaign 

will be the renovation work on the Ina Hart Christian 

Education Complex and Offices at the Village Church. 

There are also some problems with the roof that need to be 

addressed. Work should begin in this area in the next few 

weeks. 

Recently, the proposed public library for Dowling Park 

overcame a major hurdle as the Suwannee County Commission 

voted to accept the State of Florida grant to construct 

the facility. Fundraising for the project and proposals for 

the architecture and engineering are in process now. It is 

anticipated that the Village archives wing given in memory of 

Shirley Brooks will be built in conjunction with the library. 

Funding was raised for this project through the 100th Anniversary 

Capital Campaign. We are optimistic that this project 

will become a reality. 

There are a number of other ongoing construction 

projects. The renovation work at Good Samaritan Center 

continues. It is moving slowly, as we strive to cause as little 

disruption as possible for those living and working there. 

Renovation of the Village Lodge guest rooms continues. Two 

are being worked on currently with more coming in Spring. 

Finally, work at the Bixler Gardens East cemetery is also 

nearing completion. 

One of the greatest challenges we face at ACV is 

securing quality medical leadership. I am so delighted that 

Dr. Maria Gonzalez joined the team here. She has adapted 

well and is getting up to speed. It is anticipated that additional 

specialists will begin coming to ACV later in the 

spring of 2015. 

This past year saw the retirement of Sandie Hugg and we 

appreciate her years of service to ACV. We have restructured 

administrative operations and divided her duties among a 

few of us on staff. Keri Hilliard is now responsible for overseeing 

the Copeland Clinic in addition to her responsibilities 

at Good Samaritan Center and Dacier Manor. Jim Schenck 

has assumed administrative leadership for Member Services, 

Village Home Services and the Copeland Community Center. 

These individuals have taken on greater responsibility as we 

continue to endeavor to operate ACV as efficiently and effectively 

as possible. I’m grateful for their teamwork as they 

have capably risen to the challenge. 

Lives are impacted daily by this ministry. Along with 

senior adults, Advent Christian Village remains committed 

to serving children and families in need. Leadership camp 

continues to provide training to high school juniors and 

seniors, preparing them to enter the next stage of their 

life with a strong foundation of faith. Through Adventure 

Camp, foster children and children raised by grandparents 

are provided weekend respite retreats where they can heal 

and grow. Through Camp Suwannee, lives are continually 

impacted as the saving grace of our Savior is shared with 

today’s youth. Last year, ACV reached out to families with 

special needs by providing a place for respite and ministry to 

pastors serving our Advent Christian congregations. 

The ministries of Advent Christian Village are varied 

and comprehensive, as the issues of growing up and growing 

older are addressed. This community is special in so many 

ways. But much of what is accomplished only happens 

because people like you care and continually share of their 

time, talents and resources. We are deeply grateful for your 

partnership.

Community News 

Alzheimer’s Awareness Walk 

First Annual Day on the 

Suwannee Auto Show 

The cold temperatures on Nov. 15, 2014, didn’t keep 75–80 

participants from supporting a worthy cause at the second 

annual Alzheimer’s Awareness Walk. There were two walks 

from which participants could choose — a one-mile loop and 

a shorter distance — both of which began and ended at the 

entrance to Good Samaritan Center. A hot dogs and chips lunch 

was served to all participants. $1,300 was raised for GSC Activities 

and will help care for our members involved in memory 

care, including those suffering from Alzheimer’s disease. 

Faithful and Inspirational 

Volunteer Celebrated 

The first annual Day on the Suwannee Auto 

Show was a huge success. Over 100 of the 

greatest autos filled the parking lots adjacent 

to Aquilla Lake: Fords, Pontiacs, Buicks 

and the like representing automobiles over 

the past century showed up to show off 

and have a good time mingling with and 

educating the crowd of spectators. The 

2015 ACV Auto Show will be held Saturday, 

Oct. 3. Mark your calendars!

Massengill (pictured lower left, wearing a black and white 

jacket over a red shirt) on her 100th birthday. Vida has faithfully 

served the Village as a volunteer since moving to 

Dowling Park in 1980. The Rumph Dining Room, opened to 

full capacity, was packed with family and friends. A program, 

hosted by The Village Church, provided entertainment and 

tributes to this wonderful servant of the Lord.

Benevolent Ministry: How are gifts used? 

One of the things that sets ACV apart is that, 

thanks to benevolent gifts, the ministry and services of 

ACV are available to all, not just those with abundant 

resources. Support comes in many forms and serves a 

variety of purposes. 

• Senior adults: Housing, meals, essential services 

and more 

• Families: Assistance in times of crisis, help in 

getting back on their feet 

• Children: Special assistance and programming 

custom designed for their specific needs 

ACV relies upon the generosity of individuals, 

organizations and churches to accomplish its most 

worthwhile mission. Support comes in many forms and 

serves a variety of purposes. 

Direct Giving: All gifts received that are not 

specifically earmarked are used for the Benevolent 

Ministry. 

Endowment Funds: Funds are invested 

conservatively and a portion of the annual income 

is used to help defray the expenses of the benevolent 

ministry, special programs and services, and facility 

upkeep. Named endowments are established with a 

minimum of $10,000 paid over a period of up to 3 

years and the purpose can be chosen by the donor. 

Special Project Funds: Gifts that have been 

earmarked to assist with specific projects in various 

departments across ACV. 

Capital Funds: Such as gifts designated for the 

100th Anniversary Capital Campaign, are specifically 

for the construction and maintenance of ACV facilities. 

Capital funds keep costs down for members because 

facilities are built without debt.

2. Non-cash Gifts: Any tangible asset that you wish to 

donate either for use or to sell. 

3. Planned or Deferred Gifts: 

• Outright gifts of valued assets such as real estate

ministry through their generous support of the Benevolent Fund and other giving opportunities. Without that support,

Make A Difference 

After Your Lifetime 

Give a Gift to Advent Christian Village from Your Will 

You may not have a large income now, but it is 

still possible for you to leave a sizable gift to 

ACV. This was demonstrated vividly in the lives 

of “Mr. & Mrs. Smith.” The Smiths lived a 

modest lifestyle and used their money carefully. They began 

giving periodic gifts to Advent Christian Village. Through 

the years, they came to know more about ACV’s ministry 

and wanted to do more. 

Mr. & Mrs. Smith met with Craig Carter, who was 

heading up Resource Development at the time. One of 

the options he presented was a charitable gift annuity, 

which would provide funds that ACV could use upon their 

deaths, but would also give them an income for the rest of 

their lives. Another possibility was leaving a gift to ACV 

in their will. 

After taking some time to consider it, the Smiths 

decided they were living comfortably enough without the 

extra income of the annuity, so they chose to include ACV in 

their will. They soon notified Craig that they had met with 

their attorney to make the necessary arrangements. It was 

much simpler than they thought it would be. 

After providing funds for their grandchildren to attend 

college, the Smiths left the rest of their estate to Advent 

Christian Village. What they thought was a small estate 

actually ended up being quite sizable. 

The funds the Smiths left built a room in a new building 

at ACV, and it was named in their honor. And, according 

to their wishes, a portion of their bequest was directed to 

the endowment fund, which provides financial support to 

the benevolent ministry — directly helping people each and 

every year. Their “small estate” made a dramatic impact. 

The Smiths had indeed provided the generous gift that 

they had wanted to give. And you can too.
