ACV Welcomes New Physician 

DR. MARIA L. GONZALEZ 

Advent Christian Village at Dowling Park is 

thrilled to announce the arrival of their new 

chief of medical services, Dr. Maria L. Gonzalez. 

Maria, fresh from Florida Hospital in Orlando, began 

seeing patients in Dowling Park June 13. Besides seeing 

patients and managing daily operations at the Copeland 

Clinic, she will also supervise the medical care given at 

Good Samaritan Center, ACV’s 24-hour skilled nursing 

center, and at Dacier Manor, its’ assisted living facility. 

Originally from the Dominican Republic, Maria 

attended and received her MD from Autonomous 

University of Santo Domingo. She attributes her desire 

to become a physician to her mother, who is also a 

doctor. Both women specialize in general medicine. 

Maria is board certified in family medicine, geriatrics, 

and hospice and palliative medicine. Maria has a great 

passion for hospice care. 

Toward the end of her years in college, Maria was 

reacquainted with a childhood friend, Juan C. Gonzalez. 

The two began dating and were married in 2002. 

Together, the couple has a six-year-old son, Giovanni, 

and a one-year-old daughter, Rose. 

The Gonzalezes have lived in the States for 13 years. 

The past six years, Maria worked as a geriatric specialist 

at Florida Hospital. In that position, she taught both 

medical residents and students of Florida State University 

attending the Orlando campus. As a member of FSU’s 

faculty, Maria hopes to continue Dr. Masoodi’s practice 

of bringing students to the Village for instruction. 

Before being hired as a geriatric specialist by Florida 

Hospital, Maria received post-graduate medical education 

there, completing both her residency and fellowship. 

Maria’s philosophy of medicine is centered around 

respect for the patient and what 

they want. She will always 

suggest what needs to be done, 

but then her course of action 

takes into account the patient’s 

wants. She’s willing to meet 

them half way and to adapt a 

treatment plan to what they 

want and to their values. 

When asked what she likes 

best about being a physician, 

she responds, “Interacting with 

the people and getting to make 

a different in their lives.” 

Outside of the office, Maria 

says she really likes to shop. She 

also takes pleasure in visiting 

museums and attending the theater. 

So far, the medical staff at Advent Christian Village 

have impressed Maria. She has also been surprised 

by the high level of care ACV’s Social Services staff 

provides. She comments that ACV’s members receive 

support like she’s never seen before. 

Director of Nursing/Informatics Services Ann Toole 

is just as impressed with Maria. “She is very compassionate 

and is committed to providing the highest level 

of care for our residents and patients. She has big shoes 

to fill following Dr. Masoodi’s tenure here, but she is 

very capable of filling those shoes. I am looking forward 

to working with her and learning from her.” 

The Village is very glad Dr. Gonzalez agreed to 

come to Dowling Park and hopes that our relationship 

lasts for many, many years.

Building a New Community at ACV 

FIRST PROJECT OF NEW 10-YEAR MASTER DEVELOPMENT PLAN IS UNDERWAY 

The 100th Anniversary Capital Campaign is 

progressing impressively and construction on 

the first project—Taylor Commons, a new 

neighborhood of contemporary rental apartments and 

row-style houses—continues. To kick off construction, 

a celebratory groundbreaking was held April 13. 

The community gathered at the Commons site in 

order to celebrate the commencement of the campaign 

projects and to break ground for the Commons, 

signifying the start of construction. While it is difficult 

to put an exact date on the project’s completion, Jim 

Schenck, Vice President of Village Properties, estimates 

this phase will be finished by the end of 2014. 

The names of the Commons and each of the buildings 

were revealed at the ceremony. The neighborhood 

itself has been dubbed “Taylor Commons,” named 

for the late Mr. & Mrs. H. Frank Taylor. The twostory 

apartment building will be named “Lawrence 

House,” given by Judge & Mrs. Arthur Lawrence. The 

neighborhood’s gathering place will be called “Cleo’s 

Meeting House,” in memory of longtime Village benefactor 

Mrs. Cleo Smith Montgomery. 

Artist renderings of the Commons buildings were 

unveiled and Florida Department of Elder Affairs 

Secretary Chuck Corley spoke at the ceremony. Village 

administrators, together with naming donors or their 

family members, wielded shovels and assisted with the 

actual ground breaking. 

Heavy equipment has been working in the 

Commons area since late Winter to prepare the site 

for construction. South from Pinewood Way, all of the 

older rental residences have been torn down in order 

to make room for the Commons. 

Ceremonial shovels of dirt were turned during the 

Commons Groundbreaking in April. Construction 

is underway on Taylor Commons, the first 100th 

Capital Campaign project. 

The infrastructure has been updated and construction 

has begun on the first stage of the Commons: 

Lawrence House, a two-story, independent living 

apartment building housing eight two-bedroom, twobath 

apartments. In addition, the first in a series of 

row-style apartments and Cleo’s Meeting House will 

also be constructed in this phase of the project. 

“We are excited about the Commons,” says 

Director for Resource Development Darleen Hinrichs. 

“This neighborhood will help grow the population 

of ACV and it will be a beautiful enhancement to the 

Village’s ‘front door.’ The apartments will offer more 

of the options people are looking for in a home now. 

“There are people already looking forward to 

moving into the apartments when they are complete,” 

Darleen continued. 

The Future is Coming 

Foundations for the Future, ACV’s 100th 

Anniversary Capital Campaign, seeks to raise 

$3.4 million to build seven projects which 

will moderately increase membership and help 

support ACV’s outstanding services, while 

providing much needed updating to certain 

areas of the campus. They are an updated 

rental apartment neighborhood with meeting 

house (which is under construction), a new 

ceramics shop, a new manufactured housing 

neighborhood with community center, a 

heritage and archives wing, expansion of the 

Village Church Christian education wing and 

offices, and an additional assisted living facility. 

We are so grateful to those who have responded 

generously in support of the campaign. We are 

nearing our goal; however, we are keeping the 

campaign open due to increasing costs. If you

ACV Supports Local Students Through Scholarships 

Advent Christian Village has always been a strong 

supporter of education and is pleased that it can be 

a part of helping students with the costs of college 

education. This year, deserving Suwannee High School 

graduates, children of ACV employees, and ACV 

employees were presented at the annual Scholarship 

Banquet, held May 20, 

with college scholarships 

from the Marvin 

E. Jones Educational 

Trust and the ACV 

Forward Fund.

Award-winning Water on Tap at ACV 

In the early 1900s, visitors 

were drawn to Thomas Dowling’s 

resort in Dowling Park not just 

for the outstanding amenities, but 

also for the sulfur water. People 

traveled miles for the foul-smelling 

water, believing it would heal their 

ailments. Once that myth was 

disproven, the water was no longer 

popular. In fact, years ago, Village 

residents sometimes chose to bathe 

in the river over their own bathtubs. 

In 1976, however, a 150,000 

water tank and treatment plant 

brought dramatic improvement 

to the water quality at ACV. 

Certified and licensed operators 

test the water daily, making precise 

adjustments as needed to make 

the water pure, and keep accurate 

records. The certification process 

is rigorous, requiring many hours 

of technical study and grueling 

testing.

In August, ACV’s water treatment 

plant received a statewide 

award—Small Water System of 

the Year, presented by the Florida 

Rural Water Association. Daryl 

Ball, water plant supervisor for the 

past 15 years, accepted the award 

on the Village’s behalf at FRWA’s 

annual meeting in Orlando. 

Daryl has worked at the water 

plant for 23 years, and this is not 

the first FRWA award ACV has 

received in that time. In 1993, 

ACV was runner up for Best 

Tasting Water in the State, and in 

1997, was presented its first Small 

Water System of the Year award. 

FRWA recognizes just a few 

outstanding water and wastewater 

systems and individuals in Florida 

each year and it’s an honor that 

ACV’s water treatment plant was 

chosen for one of the awards this 

year.

ACV’s Chief Programs Officer Retires 

SAYING ‘THANK YOU’ TO SANDIE HUGG 

In April, the community 

gathered to thank Chief Program 

Officer Sandie Hugg for her 

years of service and to help her 

celebrate her retirement. Pastor 

Jason Hilliard spoke these words: 

“Sandie, you have embodied the 

‘one another’ statements we read 

in God’s word. You have incarnated 

them for us through your 

heart of dependable service and 

genuine concern for the welfare of 

God’s people here. You have been 

gentle among us, like a mother (1 

Thess. 2:7). Today, we honor and 

appreciate you. We commend you 

for your devotion to this sacred 

place and for your dedication to all 

who enjoy living here.” 

Sandie accepted the position 

of Vice President for Health 

Services as well as nursing home 

administrator in 2003 and has 

been a dedicated Village leader ever 

since. She was promoted to Chief 

Program Officer in 2008, and ultimately, 

her hand guided much of 

the daily operations around campus 

from Good Samaritan Center to 

housekeeping to dining services and 

more. Though her normal weekday 

routine no longer centers on hours 

spent in her office in Carter Village 

Hall, Sandie has no plans to leave 

Advent Christian Village. 

“People ask me if I’m going 

to stay in Dowling Park after I 

retire,” said Sandie during an 

interview. “Why wouldn’t I?” 

Sandie didn’t just work at Advent 

Christian Village; she loves and 

believes in this community. 

In fact, it only took one visit 

to the Village with ACV President 

Jim Humbles to convince Sandie 

she wanted to be part of this great 

organization.

guidance, Advent Christian Village 

has become an even better place 

for its members and its staff. It 

is a testament to this community 

that she will continue to call ACV

Live! at Dowling Park 2014-15 Season 

2014-15 A 

For 27 years, Advent Christian Village has hosted a variety of great acts in Suwannee County, 

bringing arts and entertainment to a part of the country where most would not expect it. The Live! 

at Dowling Park 2014-15 Artist Series season, starting a month earlier than past seasons, is bringing 

another great mix of entertainers to Dowling Park: nine engaging acts over seven months. 

Young Musicians Concert 

Thursday, Aug. 14, 2014, 7:00 p.m., The Village Church 

The 2014-15 Live! at Dowling Park Artist Series kicks off 

with an exciting musical concert presenting two groups and 

a solo performer. The fantastically talented Boys’ Choir of 

Tallahassee, an ACV favorite, will be joined by the reunited 

2013-14 Suwannee Elementary School auditioned third 

grade choir and Jeremiah Ross, a prolific Live Oak singer 

and songwriter. 

Piano Quartet “Con Brio” 

Friday, Sept. 5, 2014, 7:00 p.m., The Village Church 

Live! at Dowling Park is excited to bring back Con Brio, an 

internationally acclaimed violin, viola, cello and piano quartet. 

Valentin Mansurov, David Pedraza, Aziz Sapaev and Valeriya 

Polunina have been astounding their teachers and audiences for 

years as highly accomplished soloists. Together, these talented 

musicians are prepared to delight with their skill, passion and 

energy. 

Singing Tree, Hammered Dulcimer & Double Bass 

Saturday, Oct. 11, 2014, 7:00 p.m., The Village Church 

Singing Tree is an acoustic duo playing folk music with a 

classical twist. Ray Belanger, on the hammered dulcimer, 

ranges from lyrical and melodic to energetic and exciting. 

Lloyd Goldstein’s bass playing covers a wide range of styles, 

often employing the bow in a way that suggests the sound of 

a huge cello. 

Williamson Branch 

Thursday, Oct. 23, 2014, 7:00 p.m., The Village Church 

Williamson Branch plays music that is mostly bluegrass, sometimes 

country, often times gospel, but always fresh and exciting. 

Their vocals soar with a closeness that can only be found in 

blood relatives. Their instrumentation is melodic, yet steady— 

like the rhythm of a freight train. Their songs are mostly new, 

with age-old themes. They laugh on stage, and they’ll make you 

laugh too. 

Stephen Robinson, Classical Guitarist 

Friday, Nov. 14, 2014, 7:00 p.m., The Village Church 

Stephen Robinson tours extensively as a recitalist, chamber 

musician and orchestral soloist. He has appeared as guest 

soloist with orchestras including the Cincinnati Symphony 

and Boston Pops Orchestras. His performances and recordings 

are heralded as spectacular the world over. 

Bobby Horton: Songs and Stories of the Civil War 

Friday, Jan. 9, 2015, 6:00 p.m. refreshments, 

7:00 p.m. show, Rumph Dining Room 

Dressed as a 19th Century performer, using period musical instruments, 

Horton explores the stories of both the North and South 

through the music they loved. Each song is placed in context with 

historical background and portrays the struggles, hopes and fears 

of Americans during this long and bloody conflict. Preceding the 

show will be refreshments.

Jon and Ben Burchfield make music that inspires the soul. 

Classical guitar, midi-marimba, Irish whistles and recorders 

make these two sound like an entire ensemble! The stylistic 

diversity of Appalachian, classical, jazz, Renaissance, praise 

and gospel has attributed to the stunning arrangements that 

has put this Dove-nominated duo in demand.

Damaris Carbaugh’s depth of love and devotion for her Lord is 

evident through her special gift of song and powerful speaking 

ministry. The desire of Carbaugh’s heart is to be a servant of 

Christ. You will be moved and inspired as a true servant’s heart 

is revealed through her beautiful voice, professional demeanor 

testimony in song. 

An Evening with Charlie Chaplin 

Friday, Feb. 27, 2015, 7:00 p.m., The Village Church 

Come celebrate 100 years of “The Little Tramp” at this oneof-a-kind 

event that takes audiences on an excursion into 

Chaplin’s enchanted comic world through film clips, live 

performance, and the screening of a restored version of The 

Pawnshop, Chaplin’s short, 1916 masterpiece. Dan Kamin 

hosts an informative show that promises to be a fun evening 

with lots of audience participation

Loyal Employees Honored 

for 275 Years of Service 

Twice a year, Advent 

Christian Village recognizes 

staff members who 

have passed milestones in the 

length of their service to ACV. 

Beginning at the five-year mark 

and continuing in five-year increments, 

employees are honored at a 

luncheon. Co-workers and Village 

members are also encouraged to 

attend to show their support and 

appreciation. 

The most recent Employee 

Service Award Presentation took 

place Feb. 19, with 27 staff 

members being recognized for 

five to 30 years of service to ACV. 

The combined length of service 

between them is an amazing 275 

years. Three employees—Jeannette 

Chambers, Information Center 

Supervisor; Karen Thomas, 

Director of Residency Services; and 

Ann Toole, Director of Nursing/ 

Informatics Services—were 

given special honor as 30-year 

employees. 

Those attending the luncheon 

were entertained with photos of 

the three ladies taken through their 

years of service—many of which 

were humorous in nature—while 

Village President Craig Carter 

spoke about their dedication 

through the years. 

In a culture where the average 

length of stay at a job is 3 to 5 

years, it is remarkable that so 

many are able to celebrate these 

milestones semi-annually at ACV.

In fact, roughly 50% of current 

Village employees have worked for 

ACV for five years or more. One 

might expect only administrators 

to remain in their jobs for many 

years, but there was a wide variety 

of job titles represented among the 

honorees, from groundskeeper to 

pastor to medical clerk.

WELCOME, NEW MEMBERS 

ROLLY CHAMBERS AND PAM TRIPP 

Rolly Chambers is an attorney and partner in the 

Charlotte, NC, office of Smith, Currie & Hancock 

LLP, where he practices construction law and 

commercial litigation. He is a NC Dispute Resolution 

Commission Certified Mediator for Superior Court 

and Estates & Guardianship matters. He received 

degress from the College of William & Mary and the 

University of North Carolina. Previously, he served 

as an officer in the U.S. Navy and practiced law in 

Charlotte for nearly 30 years. Rolly and his wife, 

Nancy, have lived in Charlotte since 1984. They have 

four sons who are now grown and on their own. 

Pam Tripp is CEO of CommWell Health, an 

organization that provides medical, dental, behavioral 

health, HIV/AIDS care, pharmacy, medical imaging 

services in 14 locations within six counties throughout 

southeastern North Carolina. She is a native of North 

Carolina and resides in Dunn with her husband of 

36 years, Danny Paul Tripp. They have two children, 

Jennifer and Johnathan.

Pam began her healthcare career as a Radiologic 

Technologist. She earned degrees, including two 

master’s degrees, from four NC schools: Johnston 

Technical Institute, Methodist College, Campbell 

University and Pfeiffer University. Pam’s healthcare 

career spans over 35 years. 

Advent Christian Village welcomes these two new 

members to the Board of Directors. 


Suwannee Gala Sends Kids to Camp 

The 3rd Annual Suwannee 

Gala for Treasure Seekers, a 

benefit auction, was held at Camp 

Suwannee at Advent Christian 

Village on March 15. More than 

200 people attended the event 

where items of all shapes, sizes and 

uses were sold in both silent and 

live auctions. 

The proceeds of the yearly 

event go toward sending children 

in need to Camp Suwannee. Last 

year, more than $12,000 was 

raised for this great cause. This 

year, $16,000 was raised. 

Volunteers and staff members 

spent months planning the event. 

Area businesses donated goods 

and services, and residents donated 

antiques, furniture and collectables. 

It was been a labor of love 

and many young people received 

the benefit. 

The Gala weekend began with 

a preview event March 14. Ticket 

holders were admitted to view, 

inspect and evaluate the different 

items which would be up for 

auction the next day. 

On the 15th, doors opened at 

10:00 a.m. with a silent auction. 

Following the silent auction, lunch 

was served and entertainment 

was provided by a talented Irish 

folksinger. The live auction ended 

the day. 

Over the years, thousands of 

children and youth have attended 

Camp Suwannee and many call 

it the most life changing event of 

their formative years. ACV wishes 

to thank all those who contributed 

to the success of the Gala event 

and invites everyone to attend the 

next Suwannee Gala for Treasure 

Seekers on March 7, 2015.

Village Builders’ Guild 

Honoring Faithful Supporters 

Darleen Hinrichs, Director for 

Resource Development, welcomed 

honorees to Rumph Dining Room 

for the 2013 Village Builders’ Guild 

Banquet, in which ACV strives to 

express appreciation to the generous donors who 

support its benevolent ministries. Members of the 

Village Builders’ Guild are those whose level of cumulative 

giving has reached $5,000 or more. Those who 

are newly inducted to the guild, or who have reached 

new levels of giving, receive a plaque or gift in recognition 

of their generosity. 

Also honored are new inductees to the Perpetual 

Builders’ Guild. These are individuals who have given 

deferred gifts, such as bequests, annuities, charitable 

remainder trusts, life estate agreements and life insurance. 

These gifts can be wise investments for the 

donor, as well as helping to provide stability for ACV 

well into the future. 

Following a delicious meal provided by Village 

Dining Services, President & CEO Craig Carter delivered 

his address, highlighting the events of the past 

year and the benevolent ministries of ACV, stating 

that needs have continued to increase because of the 

economy. However, through the giving of ACV’s many 

friends, the Village was able to provide approximately 

$800,000 in assistance to people in need during the 

past year. 

Following President Carter’s words of thanks, Don 

Churchill, Chairman of the Board of Directors, echoed 

his appreciation, and continued with the special recognition 

of new members or those achieving new levels. 

Advent Christian Village is deeply appreciative of 

all those who so generously give to support its ministries.

Trumpet player and singer 

Don Plummer will perform 

Sat., March 14. Don has been 

singing and playing his trumpet 

in concerts for many years 

in 36 states and Canada. He 

regularly performs with the 

Strafford Wind Symphony. 

He studied music at Berkshire 

Christian College and currently 

serves as pastor of the 

Northwood Advent Christian 

Church in New Hampsire. 

Tickets are not required to 

attend this concert, but a love 

offering will be collected. 

Keynote Speaker 

Dr. Marvin McMickle 

After Marvin McMickle 

graduated from Aurora 

University in 1970, he went on 

to receive five more degrees. 

He was ordained in 1973 and 

has since worked at several 

churches and universities. 

Marvin believes in putting feet 

to your faith, and established 

ministries for those with 

HIV/AIDS, job training, a 

hunger center, three AA units, 

and a credit union. Marvin is 

currently president of Colgate 

Rochester Crozer Divinity 

School in Rochester, NY, and 

is the author of 14 books. 

Bible Teacher 

Rev. Adrian Shepard 

Adrian Shepard, a graduate 

of Aurora University, retired 

after 43 years in ministry. He 

enjoyed 10 years pastoring 

before serving eight years 

with the Advent Christian 

General Conference and four 

years with the Appalachian 

Advent Christian Association. 

Before retirement, Adrian was 

pastor for 17 years at United 

Advent Christian Church 

in Wilmington, NC, where 

he and his wife still live. We 

welcome back this outstanding 

teacher to lead our Winter 

Retreat Bible studies.
