copies of resolutions that passed the Florida House 

and Florida Senate in honor of ACV’s centennial. ACV 

President & CEO Craig Carter happily accepted the 

resolutions, thanking the Representative and Senator 

for their acknowledgement of ACV’s centennial.

The resolutions are a beautiful gesture of 

recognition and a reminder of how a community 

under God’s leadership can be a light to the world. The 

Representative and Senator commended ACV on how 


it has become such a wonderful place to live and said 

many times that they love visiting the Village.

Celebrating

Good Samaritan Center Gets a Facelift 

Advent Christian Village strives to make its 161- 

bed skilled nursing center feel comfortable and 

home-like to its residents. Rooms are furnished 

with amenities and the “comforts of home.” But, 

just like home, there comes a time when the finishes 

begin to show their age. ACV is excited to announce 

that Good Samaritan Center is receiving a facelift. 

Some renovations have already begun, but the biggest 

changes are still ahead. 

Over the last few months, the exterior of GSC has 

received a good washing and some painting. Beginning 

this summer, remodeling focusing on façades and 

interior finishes of residents’ rooms and common areas 

began. Floor coverings and ceiling tiles will be replaced 

and seating will be enhanced, to name a few of the 

planned changes. 

Many of the renovations will involve sprucing 

up individual residents’ rooms. Most rooms will 

receive a fresh coat of paint and many ACV-provided 

furnishings, including beds, will be replaced. Facility 

wide, the nurse call system will receive an overhaul 

and the air conditioning system will be improved. The 

dining rooms will also receive improvements to finishes 

and furnishings. 

To provide improved space for resident activity on 

each wing, changes to the nursing stations have been 

designed. Something visitors will notice right away is 

that the entrance to GSC is being remodeled to give 

volunteers a desk, creating a reception area. 

“I am so pleased that we have been given this 

opportunity to upgrade and improve many aspects 

of the Good Samaritan Center,” comments GSC 

Administrator Keri Hilliard. “The renovations that 

are planned will greatly improve the quality of life 

for our residents. Both residents and staff are excited 

to see what their new ‘home’ will look like once the 

renovations are complete.” 

ACV had hoped these improvements would have 

been further along by now, but they only just recently 

received approval from the state to begin the work. 

Now that they have approval, ACV is ready to begin 

renovating in earnest. It is anticipated that the planned 

updates could take up to a year to complete, with as 

little disruption to residents as possible.

ACV’s New Nurse Practitioner 

Beth Fulford 

Advent Christian Village’s mission is to provide 

compassionate care and quality comprehensive 

services. One way that is done is by giving 

members and the surrounding community the serenity 

that comes from knowing that quality medical 

care is available close by. When ACV’s new Nurse 

Practitioner, Beth Fulford, was 

welcomed to ACV in March, 

she became a valuable part of 

ACV’s medical services. 

Beth has been a nurse 

for 22 years and a Nurse 

Practitioner for 10. She has also 

worked for hospice for many 

years. She says that she loves 

caring for people. She is Board 

certified in both Family Practice 

and Pediatrics. 

Beth decided that she 

wanted to be a nurse on her 

13th birthday. Her brother was 

admitted to the hospital and 

the doctor told her family that 

he would not make it through the night. Beth was 

devastated. A nurse took Beth to get a Coke and 

held her hand through that difficult time. She says, 

“It was just a simple act, but it meant so much to me. 

I told myself that someday I was going to help 

someone like that.” 

Besides being a caring nurse, Beth is a single parent 

to three children: two boys, ages 21 and 19, and a girl, 

age 15. She lives on family land in Greenville, Fla. Her 

faith is very important to her and she is the worship 

leader at her church. She is a people person and spends 

a lot of time with family and friends. 

Beth teaches a Personal Health class at North 

Florida Community College in Madison, Fla. On the 

day of last Spring’s final, she told the class that they 

could take the exam together as a class, as long as each 

student answered at least one question. She included 

some difficult material, and when the more outgoing 

students struggled on a particular question, a quiet 

student raised his hand and saved the day with the 

correct answer. At the end of the exam, every question 

had been answered correctly. 

She told the students that they had aced the exam, 

but the real lesson was that they were all stronger 

because they had worked together. Sometimes in life, 

Beth advises, you haven’t quite prepared. When you 

are weak, step back and let someone else shine … 

but be graceful. When you are strong, step up; but 

be graceful about that, too. She says, “That probably 

sums up my philosophy in a nutshell.” 

Before coming to ACV, Beth was working parttime 

at a family practice, but needed full-time work. 

Beth says, “A close friend who knows the Village well 

suggested that it would be a happy partnership if I 

worked here. I called and was asked to come in to 

discuss the possibility. As soon as I walked in, I felt 

like I belonged. It is my hope that I will be here until I 

retire.” 

The community is happy to welcome Beth Fulford 

to ACV’s big family. 

South Entrance Enhancement 

Construction to spruce up the south entrance to Advent Christian Village was completed this summer. 

The lettered brick walls decorated with wrought iron fencing, stately lamp posts, and lush greenery 

complement the north entrance which was rerouted and enhanced in 2006. Fresh welcome and 

centennial banners add a warm greeting to all who enter.

Heritage Trail 5K 

The Heritage Trail 5k race celebrates ACV’s heritage. This year, a twist was added to the event 

by moving it from ACV’s streets to its nature trail along the Suwannee River. It was a true 

multigenerational event as runners from 7 to 79 years of age participated. 

ACV’s New Sharer of the Secret 

Deidra newman, Director of marketing 

Advent Christian Village has sometimes been 

called Florida’s best kept secret; as people 

who visit for the first time are amazed at 

all the community has to offer. New Director of 

Marketing, Deidra Newman, hopes to make that 

secret common knowledge. 

Originally from Dallas, Deidra is a go-getter 

with a deep desire to help people. Her philosophy is, 

“No one has achieved any kind of success without 

someone else’s help. I believe that we should always 

take someone with us on our upward climb and there 

should never be a point where we stop learning.” 

Deidra graduated from Taylor County High 

School, North Florida Community College, served 

in the US Air Force and attended Hawaii Pacific 

University. She graduated from Saint Leo University, 

where she is pursuing master’s degrees in Educational 

Leadership and Healthcare Administration. 

Deidra has a broad scope of leadership experience. 

Early in her career, she created and was the driving 

force behind the first magazine for military spouses 

for all branches of the military, which was purchased 

by Stars and Stripes Omnimedia in 2001. She planned 

and implemented conferences on a worldwide speaking 

tour for military spouses and those in military careers. 

For the last six years, she was Director of Marketing 

for North Florida Medical Centers, Inc. covering 

17 counties in north Florida. And she is a tireless 

volunteer and leader in her community and throughout 

the state of Florida. 

Deidra wasn’t 

planning to leave her 

previous position and 

had no resume prepared 

when her husband noticed 

the job opening on the 

ACV website. A friend 

encouraged her to look 

into it. From there, she 

says she cannot explain 

what happened, but she 

knows she was led here. 

She truly believes that she can make a difference at 

ACV and she is thrilled to have that opportunity. She 

has already fallen in love with the community and 

says, “No matter what is happening outside the Village, 

when I drive on campus, there is a different feeling … a 

sense of belonging that I’ve never felt before.” 

Deidra lives in nearby Perry, Fla. with her 

husband, Randy. They are proud parents of children, 

Emily (21) and Jayse (16). They are also the unofficial 

adoptive parents of New England Patriots running 

back LeGarrette Blount. Deidra is an avid football 

fan and loves art, travel, culture, painting and writing. 

She has written a book of her life experiences that she 

plans to have published soon. 

Advent Christian Village is excited to have 

Deidra’s expertise and energy working to help share 

the “secret,” and we are pleased to welcome Deidra 

Newman to the big family.

A New Position for a Dedicated Employee 

Darleen Hinrichs 

ACV’s Director of Resource Development 

This past spring, Advent Christian Village’s 

Director for Resource Development Bob 

O’Brien and his wife felt the call to missions 

in South Africa and left Dowling Park, despite their 

love for the community. Darleen Hinrichs, former 

Director of Communications, was offered the position 

of Director for Resource Development and accepted, 

formally beginning her new position May 1. 

How long have you worked for ACV? 

I started working here in January of 1995, so it’s 

almost 19 years now. 

What previous positions have you had with ACV, and 

what did you do in those positions? 

I started as the Assistant Manager of the Village 

Lodge. Then for seven years I worked in Social Services 

as a Service Coordinator. I was the Office Manager at 

the Village Church for a brief period. For the last eight 

years I have been in Resource Development, where 

as Director of Communications I was responsible 

for public relations and publications. In that role I 

was also part of the

for training in Planned Giving and I’m doing a lot of 

reading on my own. Much of my preparation comes 

from my years at ACV. A lot of the job involves just 

intimately knowing the ministry of ACV and the 

community. 

What does the Director for Resource Development do? 

Basically, it is my responsibility to make sure 

ACV has the resources to continue its ministry. I’m 

responsible for fund raising, educating and assisting 

people with planned giving and estate plans. It is also 

my privilege to express appreciation to those who give 

gifts to the Village. In my case, I’m still responsible for 

directing Village communications as well. 

What do you like most about your job? 

The best part is interacting with so many 

wonderful people. I love being part of making sure 

ACV is able to help people and will be able to for the 

foreseeable future. I was recently privileged to facilitate 

a very generous planned gift that would be used for 

direct care. I had such a difficult time writing the thank 

you letter because words were not adequate for the 

impact that gift would have here. Thinking about it 

literally brought tears to my eyes. 

What’s the most challenging aspect of your new 

position? 

It has been challenging learning all the details of 

planned giving. As soon as I think I have it, someone 

asks a question to which I’m uncertain of the answer. It 

is an ongoing process. Everyone has been very patient, 

and thankfully Craig Carter held this role for many 

years and is passing along his knowledge. 

Something that I feel will be an ongoing challenge 

is finding a compelling way to explain the urgent need 

for gifts without jeopardizing the privacy and dignity 

of the people who benefit from them. We are very 

careful to protect that. As a result, our requests for 

support often remain very generic, but if we could tell 

the individual stories of the difference those gifts make, 

people would be amazed and very touched. 

How does the Village bring in resources? 

ACV has many generous friends. They send 

gifts for a variety of reasons; sometimes in honor 

or memory of a loved one, or in response to a letter 

we have sent, sometimes just of their own accord. 

It is a great testimony to the Village that the largest 

percentage of ACV’s supporters is its own members. 

Several staff members have also asked that regular gifts 

be automatically withdrawn from their paychecks. 

Many churches support ACV with special offerings, 

like 5th Sunday offerings. Individuals include the 

Village in their estate plans or make planned gifts like 


gift annuities that give a gift to ACV and provide the 

giver with income, or endowments that supply ACV 

with never ending support. Each of these methods 

of giving provides resources for ACV’s benevolent 

ministries. Without them the Village couldn’t make the 

impact that it does on people’s lives. 

How are resources used at ACV? 

Gifts given to ACV automatically go into the 

Benevolent Fund and are used to help people in need, 

unless otherwise designated. (Operational resources 

are handled separately and are not supported by 

gifts unless specifically earmarked for that purpose.) 

Senior adults are helped with things such as housing, 

meals, services, medications and other necessities of 

life. Families in crisis receive assistance based on their 

circumstances. Children are helped through special 

ministries designed to make a significant difference 

in their lives according to their needs. Gifts given to 

ACV are always used for the purpose they were given. 

We operate on a balanced budget and hold ourselves 

accountable through audits, our membership in ECFA 

and our accreditation by CARF-CCAC. 

What plans do you have to bring in more resources? 

The best way to bring in resources is to effectively 

get the story of ACV out there. It’s a compelling story. 

What is accomplished here and the way it is done is 

amazing. As people get to know the heart of ACV, 

support will come as a natural response. I believe God 

blesses the Village because its leadership carries out 

this ministry in a way that pleases Him. 

What do you like most about working for ACV? 

I love the people, but I am also proud to say I 

work here. I appreciate that everything is done with 

quality and integrity. It’s hard to find an organization 

where you fully believe in what they do. For 100 

years ACV has done the same thing: shown the love 

of Christ by meeting needs and providing a home for 

those that need it most. 

Please provide the readers with a little bit of personal 

background. 

I was raised in New England. My father was an 

Advent Christian pastor, so I have known of ACV since 

childhood. My first visit to ACV was in 1981, when 

I was traveling with the Berkshire Christian College 

Chorale. It was a quick visit, so all I remember about 

it was singing in the chapel and visiting with my great 

uncle, Everett Pender, who was a Village member at 

the time. I came to live at ACV in 1994 at a time of 

crisis in my life, so my first real encounter with it 

was from a standpoint of being ministered to. I will 

forever be indebted to ACV for what was done for me. 

I appreciate the faith Village administration has put in 

me and their patience as they have helped me to stretch 

and achieve things I never thought possible. I know 

that was only possible because of God’s mercy and the 

support I have received here. 

I married my incredibly supportive husband 

Wayne in 2005. Together we have four amazing 

children. They are all grown and on their own. 

Is there anything

Too often, we 

receive word after 

someone has died 

that they included 

ACV in their will. 

While we are very 

grateful for that, we 

are also saddened 

that we never had 

an opportunity to 

express our thanks 

to them because 

they didn’t tell us. 

We encourage anyone who has included ACV in their 

estate plans, no matter the size of the gift, to please let 

us know so that we can express our appreciation. 

Also, anyone who has not spent time at ACV in 

the last 10 years should come for a visit. It really takes 

spending time at the Village to truly understand this 

ministry. Some people see state-of-the-art facilities and 

assume that ACV does not need their support. They 

need to know that ACV’s outstanding facilities were 

built with gifts specifically given for that purpose. All 

undesignated gifts given to ACV go directly to help 

people. That is the heart of this ministry. The need is 

great. The buildings are strictly a conduit for ministry.

Village Bids Farewell to Beloved Physician 

After nine years, Dr. Nasseer A. Masoodi and family leave acv 

Amid the celebrations and commemorations 

surrounding Advent Christian Village’s 100th 

anniversary, the members, residents, staff and 

community of ACV were saddened this summer to bid 

farewell to beloved physician, 

Dr. Nasseer A. Masoodi. ACV’s 

primary care physician and 

geriatrician ended his tenure as 

Medical Director and Attending 

Physician at ACV at the end of 

June and moved south to fill 

a medical position in central 

Florida. 

During an open reception 

for Village residents and staff in 

honor of Dr. Masoodi on July 1, 

Nasseer recalled, “I remember 

vividly my meeting [in 2004] 

with Jim Humbles and our 

conversation about ACV—its 

needs and its values. It was a 

daunting task, but there was 

just this huge abundance of fine 

people who helped me to get my 

groundings.”

who retired in 2008, hired Dr. 

Masoodi in July 2004 after 

Nasseer spent four years in 

New York studying and getting 

acquainted with American 

medical practices. Previously, 

he worked several medical 

positions in India. Masoodi’s 

expanded study and certification 

in geriatric medicine made him a 

perfect fit for ACV. 

Besides winning the 

community over with his warm 

demeanor and infectious smile, 

Dr. Masoodi, along with his 

wife, Naheed, brought home 

baby Haiqa a month after 

they arrived in Florida. The 

Masoodi’s son, Hadi, was six. 

Dr. Masoodi said an eloquent 

goodbye during a reception given 

in his honor July 1.

his wife, Jerry Lynn, bid farewell to 

Dr. Masoodi.

Coordinator D’Arcy Chapman 

presents Dr. Masoodi with a 

memento. One of the many 

American customs the members and 

staff of ACV taught Masoodi during 

his time here was hunting. 

The family of four settled in and quickly made 

friends among the residents, Village Church family 

and staff of ACV. These friendships continued through 

the nine years the Masoodis called Dowling Park 

home. “We are so grateful to have 

spent these years surrounded by such 

compassionate friends, neighbors and 

colleagues,” said Dr. Masoodi during his 

reception. “So many times, they have 

helped us, whether it was taking our 

kids to school, inviting them to their 

homes, or having them be part of their 

daily life activities. I especially want 

to recognize the youth group that my 

family and I have had a lot of fun times 

with. Whether it was the hockey time, 

soccer in the rain, our across-the-state 

runs, or volleyball in the evenings by the 

pool, there was never a dull moment.” 

Dr. Masoodi encourages physical 

activity. He, himself, especially enjoys 

running and soccer. His love of running 

has stimulated many in the Dowling 

Park community—young and old— 

to take up running for exercise. He 

and teams of community residents 

have taken part in many relays and 

marathons together. 

Because of his love of the outdoors 

and willingness to try new things, some 

residents took it upon themselves to 

introduce Nasseer to some American 

outdoor pastimes: hunting and fishing 

to name two. In honor of his hunting 

trips, where he shot with a camera 

instead of with a rifle, one of the 

mementoes presented to Dr. Masoodi at 

his reception was a deer head, mounted 

and ready for his new office wall. 

On behalf of the Village, Chief 

Program Officer, Sandie Hugg presented 

a plaque to Dr. Masoodi which read, 

“With Sincere Appreciation to Dr. 

Nasseer Masoodi for your commitment 

to fulfilling the mission of Advent 

Christian Village by providing 


quality, compassionate medical care to those served 

through the Copeland Medical Center.” During her 

presentation, Hugg explained how the medical face 

of Advent Christian Village has changed dramatically 

under Masoodi’s leadership. During the past nine 

years, Nasseer not only became certified enough times 

to double the length of his name with designations, 

he also moved the Village’s medical services into a 

state-of-the-art medical facility, brought ACV’s medical 

records up to date with new software, and helped 

make the level of care at the Good Samaritan Center 

less institutional and more person centered. 

Nasseer was promoted to Vice President, Chief 

Informatics Officer in 2012. He also taught at Florida 

State University College of Medicine. His dedication 

to his students at FSU rewarded him with the honor of 

being named Outstanding Clinical Faculty Educator. 

He has also co-authored 15 publications. 

Dr. Masoodi concluded his farewell speech with “I 

have enjoyed my time here and I appreciate having had 

the opportunity to work with you. Thank you for all 

the support, guidance and help you have provided me 

and my family over the past nine years.” 

ACV is grateful for its partnership with Florida 

State University College of Medicine. Reputable 

physicians from the College have agreed to provide 

medical coverage at Copeland Medical Center and 

Good Samaritan Center until Dr. Maria Gonzalez 

begins practicing in Dowling Park in June 2014 

(see sidebar). Dr. Ken Brummel-Smith, Chair of the 

Department of Geriatrics at FSU-COM, has been 

providing Medical Director service to Copeland 

Medical Center. Dr. Jacquelyn Lloyd stepped down from 

the Village Board of Directors to provide administrative 

Medical Director service to Good Samaritan Center, 

and Dr. Niharika Suchak and Dr. Alice Pomidor 

are seeing patients at GSC. All of the physicians are 

geriatricians with years of professional experience. 

Advent Christian Village has also made 

arrangements with Dr. Donna Schippers, DO, to 

provide physician services to the residents of Good 

Samaritan Center. She’s worked with ACV in the past 

and has been seeing residents at Good Samaritan

has contracted with a new physician. Dr. Maria 

Gonzalez, MD, currently from Orlando, Fla., will begin 

practicing in Dowling Park in June 2014. She is Board 

Certified in Family Medicine, Geriatrics and Hospice 

and Palliative Care. Dr. Gonzalez did her Geriatric 

Fellowship at Florida Hospital in Orlando, where she 

is currently the Assistant Director of Family Medicine/ 

Geriatrics, as well as Clinical Assistant Professor 

at the Orlando campus of Florida State University 

College of Medicine. Having started her career in the 

Dominican Republic, she has an excellent command 

of the English language, as well as Spanish. 

Dr. Gonzalez’s husband Carlos, their 5-year old 

son, Giovanni, and infant daughter, Rose Marie, 

will come with her to Dowling Park. 

Until Dr. Gonzalez’s arrival, our partners, like those 

at FSU College of Medicine, will continue to provide 

excellent medical coverage at ACV.

Winter Retreat Panel Excerpts 

Pomeroy CArter, Dr. Sid BRadley, Rev. Ron Thomas, and Jim HUmbles discuss 

The past, present and future of Advent CHristian Village. 

Another aspect of the Centennial celebration was 

the 2013 Winter Retreat, when the enduring 

partnership between Advent Christian 

Village and the Advent Christian denomination was 

recognized. Keynote speakers Dr. Sid Bradley and 

Rev. Ron Thomas were both been integral members 

of ACV administration from the 1970s through the 

1990s. Sid and Ron were joined by President Emeritus 

Pomeroy Carter and former President Jim Humbles in 

a panel discussion facilitated by current President and 

CEO Craig Carter. The edited comments below are in 

response to the question, “What makes ACV unique?” 

Pomeroy Carter: First, it’s affordable. At many 

retirement communities established by other 

denominations, you have to have a lot of money for 

an entrance fee. I did part of my internship for my 

Master’s at another community, and there, if you didn’t 

have enough money for the entrance fee, you had to 

give them all that you had and they would provide 

you with spending money that they would dole out 

on Friday afternoons. To me this was just wrong. 

I felt that at the Village, we might not be able to 

give the finer things, but we would not get to the point 

where we couldn’t serve all the people in the pew. 

So, we certainly have strived to do that. The other 

is because of our remote location; we developed a 

continuum of care, where people can come while they 

are still active and are able to receive the appropriate 

care they need, until death, frankly. That has been 

unique to the Village. 

Sid Bradley: What also makes the Village unique 

is that it is compassionate and adaptable. It has been 

compassionate in that it has provided care for people 

who simply could not have received the quality of care, 

the level of care, the context of care; they couldn’t 

have afforded it. They couldn’t have found it, probably 

anywhere else. 

There comes to mind an Advent Christian minister 

who, because of the serious illness of his wife, had to 

end his ministry and get his wife into care before he 

could draw Social Security. Their combined income was 

$78 a month and they had no resources because they 

had been involved in pastoral ministry. But the Village 

has always been the safety net for Advent Christian 

ministers. They were able to live here, they were able to 

be cared for here. Eventually he was able to find parttime 

employment to supplement their income. That is 

compassionate ministry. That’s the kind of care that 

Christ would give. That’s adapting to the needs of people. 

The Village has adapted to the changing needs of 

children. In the beginning when the Village started, 

the needs of children were that they were orphans. 

Children are still orphans, but they are not the same 

kind of orphans. Only three percent of orphans are 

orphans because both parents are dead. Most orphans 

nowadays are orphans because their parents are in 

prison, their parents have abandoned them, their 

parents are drug addicts. Those are the kind of orphans 

we have now. Those children are severely damaged 

emotionally. They are hurt. They are crushed. They are 

abused. They bear serious scars.

The Village has tried to deal with and adapt to 

that. At one point, we had a program here that was 

called Eagle Bend. It was a residential treatment center 

and we had one young man who had been in 53 

placements! This was his 53rd! 

Can you imagine planting your roots over and 

over again and believing that it’s not safe to trust 

anybody any more. But he began to trust people 

around here and one day he was sweeping the parking 

lot at the Village Square. One of our residents was 

driving there and got her high heel caught under the 

accelerator. She almost took him out! Fortunately, she 

missed him—although she got the broom. Afterward, 

one of our childcare workers asked him, “What was 

it like when that car came careening through there?” 

He said, “Phew, I thought I was headed for that Great 

Foster Home in the sky!” 

Those are the kind of children we have tried to 

serve, because the Village has been adaptable. We’ve 

tried to be on the bleeding edge of how best to serve 

those who are created in God’s image. 

Ron Thomas: Just an observation, and many I’m sure 

have experienced this themselves as they have had 

the opportunity to greet someone who is visiting the 

Village. They say, “There is just something unique 

about this place. I can’t put my finger on it, but there 

is something special about this place.” I think we know 

what that is. It is that there are people who have found 

their life to be wrapped up in Christ. It doesn’t matter 

if it is Advent Christian or whatever it is—17 different 

denominations represented in this congregation? That’s 

the body of Christ! I always loved it when the question 

was asked, “Where does the church stop and where 

does the Village begin?” You can’t … it’s so blended. 

That’s what makes this place so unique. This is the 

body of Christ. The community truly is an example of 

what compassionate love in Christ’s 

name is all about. 

Jim Humbles: Craig, to just finalize 

in some ways what Ron was talking 

about, there is a sense of community at the Village, 

and I think most of you who live here know what I’m 

talking about. It’s not in every retirement village. For a 

number of years I worked very closely with the Florida 

Association of Homes and Services for the Aging, (now 

called Leading Age) and have been to a large number 

of retirement communities in Florida and some in 

Georgia. One of the major differences—they all have 

wonderful services—most of them were not unique in 

that most of you in this room could not afford to live 

there. But even more importantly, I think, is that they 

lacked that sense of community.

four of us, and beyond any of you. Ron said it; it’s

As Ron says, sometimes it’s hard to put your finger 

on it. I put my finger on it, I don’t know if it’s right or 

wrong, but of all the retirement communities, I have 

never been to one where the church is the focal point 

on the campus. There is only one other retirement 

Village in Florida, that I’m aware of, that even has 

a church. Can you imagine Advent Christian Village 

without Bixler Memorial Church? Can you imagine 

what the community would be like if we did not have 

this experience of worship and praise that is offered 

to all of us. So, guard those things very, very carefully 

and believe very firmly that what is good and right 

about this community of Advent Christian Village is 

something beyond the four of us, and beyond any of 

you. Ron said it; it’s Christ Himself.

Commemorating 100 Years 

Community Discovers the 

Treasures of the Suwannee 

Advent Christian Village presented Treasures of the Suwannee, an 

original musical stage production, to more than 1,100 people 

Audience members arrived at the Village 

Church on May 17 and 18 to discover that 

it had been transformed to a historic setting, 

complete with a hand-painted backdrop of 

the Suwannee River, a steamboat and train. 

Musicians enhanced the setting with fiddle and 

banjo music that started toes tapping and hands 

clapping. Young and old from all over north Florida 

and south Georgia piled into pews in anticipation of 

music, a touch of humor and moving reenactments 

brought the story to life. 

There were appearances by the first white residents 

of Dowling Park, Reuben and Rebecca Charles, 

wealthy businessmen Thomas Dowling and Richard 

Sears—founder of Sears, Roebuck and Co.—as well 

as many ACV leaders from the first half of the 20th 

century. Perhaps the appearance triggering the largest 

reaction was that of Old Buck, the ox, who was ACV’s 

earliest version of a shuttle bus and farm hand.

Suwannee River Singers share some catchy tunes. 

a history spectacular a century in the making. 

The lights dimmed at show time and a lone figure 

stepped out of the shadows onto the stage, raising 

a harmonica to his lips. Suddenly the crowd was 

transported back 100 years, as one of Stephen Foster’s 

most famous tunes, “Way Down Upon the Suwannee 

River,” was played. 

As part of its Centennial Celebration, Advent 

Christian Village presented Treasures of the Suwannee, 

an original musical stage production, to more than 

1,100 people on two nights. This was no boring 

history lesson, as outstanding sets, props and costumes 

took the audience back in time to the Belle of the 

Suwannee riverboat and the LOP&G railroad. Lively 

Old Buck the Ox was a favorite of the evening. 

Incredibly lifelike, complete with horns and 

a tail, the ox was constructed by Bud and Joyce Royal, 

members of ACV. Old Buck “pulled” a wagonload of 

children from one side of the church to the other while 

the cast sang an entertaining song about him. 

Directed by Rosemary Humbles, the musicians 

and cast told the story of Dowling Park at the turn of 

the 20th century and the founding of Advent Christian 

Village 100 years ago. Helping to tie the story together 

were narrator Jerry Lynn Carter and guitarist & singer 

Dick Grillo, who wrote most of the songs for the 

performance. Several accomplished musicians joined 

him, including Fiddler Lloyd Baldwin, Percussionist 

Carl Mana and, on loan from Disney World, Randy 

Morris on the banjo. Local talent included Ken Michal

on trumpet, Dave Smith on bass guitar and Margie 

Huffman on keyboard. The Suwannee River singers 

were D’Arcy Chapman, Susan Darby, Cindy Harper, 

John Harper, Jason Hilliard, Keri Hilliard, Darleen 

Hinrichs, Wayne Hinrichs, Liz Lamb, Georgie 

McClure, Charissa McDaniels, Holly Setzer, James 

Sutter and Liz Vann. Together, their exceptional 

music kept the crowd enthralled. Also adding musical 

dimension to the production were the outstanding 

vocals of Live Oak’s Ebenezer A.M.E. choir. 

Banjo player Randy Morris, who performs at 

Disney World, with ACV’s Dick Grillo, who 

wrote much of the music. 

Audience members raved about the quality and 

showmanship of the production. Some even compared 

Treasures to shows they have seen on Broadway. 

Humbles was able to pull together a cast and crew 

of current and former ACV staff, church 

members and local 

friends that were 

polished and lively.

A Firm Foundation 

10-Year Master Development Plan to Drive Growth 

To remain relevant in ministry and capable 

of fulfilling its mission of serving senior 

adults, families and children, ACV has 

relied upon divine guidance brought about 

through prayerful planning. In 1988, during its 75th 

Anniversary Celebration, Village leadership continued 

its strategic thinking by developing a 20-year master 

development plan, which foresaw the need for a 

number of service-oriented buildings as well as 

additional and expanded housing options. The projects 

accomplished in the 25 years since then have equipped 

the Village to provide an array of quality services and 

enabled ACV to respond appropriately to the changing 

needs of those it serves. 

In celebration of ACV’s 100th birthday and 

in preparation for its next century of service, the 

Village Board of Directors recently adopted a new 

10-year Master Development Plan. The projects in 

the new plan are intended to grow the population of 

the community and augment existing services while 

continuing to cultivate the hometown feeling that is so 

often described by visitors to Advent Christian Village. 

The new housing options that are part of the plan 

are designed in clusters to encourage neighborhood 

interaction. Village officials have listened to the 

concerns of the community and the desires of 

prospective members and have responded accordingly. 

The result is a development plan that will better 

position ACV for ministry into its second century of 

service. The new Master Development Plan consists of 

the following projects: 

The Commons 

A new neighborhood development of twobedroom, 

two-bath apartments will add rental 

apartments and enhance curb appeal along Dowling 

Park Drive. A two-story independent living apartment 

building will kick off the construction of “The 

Commons” at the Village Centre. It will consist of 

eight apartments with larger kitchens and open 

concept living spaces. In addition, 22 “row house” 

style apartments will be constructed in two phases 

to replace the older apartments along Dowling Park 

Drive. These will be single story attached-style housing 

with several upscale features and enclosed garages. 

The Commons will include terraced landscapes and 

sitting areas that will improve first impressions at 

the Village Centre. 

Manufactured Housing Development 

A new manufactured home neighborhood is 

included in the next phase of planning, which will 

accommodate larger and more modern manufactured 

homes. The homes will be situated 

in clusters to create a neighborhood 

atmosphere. The total number of homes 

will equal between 100 and 120, over 

the course of three phases. 

A New Assisted Living Facility 

New assisted living units will be 

located near the Village vineyard. This 

will meet the desire for assisted living 

for those who are more self-sufficient, 

housing smaller groups of residents in 

multiple buildings. 

Condominiums 

A new home ownership option at ACV will be 

introduced through modern condominiums located 

close to Copeland Community Center. The plan 

calls for 10 units within five single-story duplexes. 

The homeowner will have minimal maintenance 

responsibilities as they participate in a homeowners 

association that will provide all exterior and systems 

maintenance. These will be built as soon as members 

contract for a home.

100th Anniversary Capital Campaign will raise $3.4 million 

Coming out of that Master Development 

Plan is a new capital campaign. The goal 

of the $3.4 million campaign is to enrich 

ACV’s housing options to better serve 

today’s senior adults. In preparation for a second 

century of service, it is with great pleasure that Advent 

Christian Village announces the projects of the 100th 

Anniversary Capital Campaign 

The Commons ($1,214,000) 

The new neighborhood development of twobedroom/two-bath 

apartments along Dowling Park 

Drive is scheduled to be the first project under 

construction, which will add additional rental 

apartments to the community and enhance the 

appearance of ACV’s “front door.” 

The Commons Meeting House ($225,000) 

Located in the center of the planned Commons 

development along Dowling Park Drive, this building 

will be used initially as a marketing center for the 

Commons apartments. In the future, the building 

will be a community building, providing space for 

member activities and meetings and may house some 

community-based services. It will be open to the entire 

Village community. 

Ceramics Shop ($150,000) 

The Ceramics Shop will be relocated to Aquilla 

Circle and expanded. This area is being developed as a 

central activity area for Village membership. 

South Community Center ($220,000) 

Aling with the development of the new 

manufactured housing, the South Community Center 

will provide additional activity space for the Village. 

It will provide space for meetings and group activities 

and will be open to the entire Village community. 

Village Heritage Room/Archives Building 

($150,000) 

Suwannee County has a proposed library 

branch planned at Dowling Park to better serve the 

county, and the project is in line for state funding. 

The proposed location is on the northwest corner of 

Marvin Jones Blvd. and Dowling Park Dr. This project 

will provide space for Village Archives as well as a 

display area for Village history. The heritage portion 

is to be funded by Capital Campaign gifts and will be 

an attached addition on the library. The facility will be 

open to the public as part of the public library. 

Village Church Christian Education 

Expansion and Office Reconfiguration 

($150,000) 

Space allocation for the Village Church 

educational wing will be improved as the courtyard 

is enclosed to create additional classrooms within the 

existing footprint of the building. Additionally, the 

church administrative office suite will be reconfigured 

for better workflow. 

New Assisted Living Facility ($1,250,000) 

These additional assisted living units will be on 

a separate site from Dacier Manor. The project will 

include four buildings, each housing up to 12 residents, 

to be built in four phases as demand dictates. These 

will become home to assisted living residents who are 

more self-sufficient.

Commemorating 100 Years 

A Walk Back in Time 

As part of its year-long Centennial 

Celebration, ACV held the dedication and 

inaugural walk of the Village Heritage Trail 

in January. The Trail is a new walking trail, 

given in memory of Zelene Carter Inman (daughter 

of former ACV Superintendent M.A. Carter and sister 

of ACV President Emeritus Pomeroy Carter) by her 

extended family. Decorative signs mark the locations 

of significant buildings from the early days of Advent 

Christian Village and describe how they served the 

ministry. Photos of each building are displayed on their 

corresponding signs and a guidebook is also available. 

The dedication ceremony was held outside in the 

Village Centre, where the Trail 

begins. Family and friends of

Zelene was associated with 

Advent Christian Village for 

over 65 years. She grew up in 

Waycross, Ga., but attended Camp Suwannee as a 

child, taking a Greyhound bus to Live Oak, then riding 

the LOP&G train to Dowling Park. At that time, all 

the buildings included on the Heritage Trail, except 

two, were still in use. Zelene continued attending 

Camp Suwannee throughout high school and served 

on the camp staff for several years. 

Zelene’s father, M.A. Carter, became Resident 

Manager of Advent Christian Home & Orphanage 

(eventually ACV) in 1955 and was promoted to 

Superintendent in 1957. In college, Zelene worked in 

“the Home” office during summers and returned to 

Dowling Park on school breaks. Although she moved 

away after getting married and beginning her teaching 

career, Zelene visited often and kept Advent Christian 

Village in her heart, staying involved in its ministries. 

Celebrating a 

Century with Trees 

To commemorate the 100th anniversary of the 

founding of Advent Christian Village, 100 

trees were planted around the community 

this spring. The trees were a gift from ACV 

member Jewell Barrington and her children, Tony and 

Becky. Several trees were planted along Buck Rogers 

Drive so that as they grow, they will create natural 

arches, shading the road underneath. This canopy 

road was planted in memory of Jewell’s husband, 

Jimmy, who was a member of ACV and the Executive 

Director of the Agricultural Stabilization Conservation 

Service in Lafayette County, Fla. for 34 years. He was a 

beloved friend to many throughout his life. 

The Barrington family, which dedicated 100 trees, stands 

by the marker for Canopy Road. 

On Sunday, Feb. 24, the community gathered 

outside Harmony Center to dedicate the Centennial 

Trees and Canopy Road. Family and friends of Mr. 

Barrington also came out to show their support. 

Former ACV President & CEO Jim Humbles gave a 

tribute. Daughter-in-law of Jimmy and former ACV 

employee Stephanie Barrington led the Litany of 

Dedication. Current President & CEO Craig Carter 

recognized the generous gift from the Barrington 

family. At the close of the ceremony, Matthew 

Hilliard, who was Jimmy’s pal in the Village Church 

Pal Program until his death, offered the benediction. 

The trees are a beautiful addition to the ACV 

campus and a wonderful way to commemorate 

ACV’s centennial.

Room for the 2012 Village Builders’ 

Guild Banquet, in which ACV strives 

to express appreciation to the generous donors who 

support its benevolent ministries. Members of the 

Village Builders’ Guild are those whose level of 

cumulative giving has reached $5,000 or more. Those 

who are newly inducted to the guild, or who have 

reached new levels of giving, receive a plaque or gift in 

recognition of their generosity. 

Also honored are new inductees to the Perpetual 

Builders’ Guild. These are individuals who have given 

deferred gifts, such as bequests, annuities, charitable 

remainder trusts, life estate agreements and life 

insurance. These gifts can be wise investments for the 

donor, as well as helping to provide stability for ACV 

well into the future. 

Following a delicious meal provided by Village 

Dining Services, President & CEO Craig Carter 

delivered his address, highlighting the events of the 

past year and the benevolent ministries of ACV, stating 

that needs have continued to increase because of the 

economy. However, through the giving of ACV’s many 

friends, the Village was able to provide approximately 

$800,000 in assistance to people in need during the 

past year. 

Following President Carter’s words of thanks, 

Don Churchill, Chairman of the Board of Directors, 

echoed his appreciation, and continued with the special 

recognition of new members or those achieving new 

levels. 

Advent Christian Village is deeply appreciative 

of all those who so generously give to support its 

ministries. Without that support, ACV would not be 

able to significantly impact the lives of hundreds of 

people each year.
