As Executive Director of the American Red Cross, Central Iowa Chapter, I have the opportunity to see how
people are changing lives every day. Disaster-trained volunteers change the lives of families who have
lost their home to fire, providing comfort, safety and hope. I see students taking CPR and first aid training,
learning the skills that could save the life of a family member or friend.
This spring, the American Red Cross launched a new ad campaign entitled, “Change a Life, Starting with
Your Own.” The campaign encourages people to get involved with and support their local Red Cross
chapter, take lifesaving training and take steps to be prepared for the unexpected.
The “unexpected” happened in late May when a tornado ripped through Parkersburg and other northeast
Iowa communities and rural areas. The tornado was followed by massive flooding that devastated 84 Iowa
counties, destroying homes and businesses throughout the Heartland. Red Cross volunteers were there,
providing comfort and safety to thousands of families.
As we look back on 2008, we are thankful for those donors who chose to change a life by writing a check to
support their local chapter or to support those families devastated by disaster. We are also thankful for those
who chose to take lifesaving training, and for those who have joined the ranks of other Red Cross volunteers.
As we look to the future, I challenge you to change a life, starting with your own.
Central Iowa Chapter
As I complete my term as Board Chair of the Central Iowa Chapter, I am thankful for the talented and
dedicated volunteers who serve on our organization’s board of directors. The Central Iowa Chapter’s strategy
is to recruit individuals from the communities served by the chapter who can bring a wide variety of talent
to the table. They are business and community leaders, representing diverse constituencies within our urban
and rural communities.
The organization has seen sweeping changes in the last two years – reorganization of the National American
Red Cross, a new National American Red Cross president and restructuring of chapters throughout the
country. The Central Iowa Chapter Board has accepted a new opportunity, and is now the regional governing
body for the Mid Iowa Region. Members of our board are again being asked to provide leadership.
Thank you for allowing me to be your Central Iowa Chapter’s chair for the past two years. I have no doubt
that the expertise of our volunteers will provide the guidance needed to make the Mid Iowa Region strong
and an example for other boards to follow.
2008
Responding to what Iowa Governor
Chet Culver called, “the worst
natural disaster in Iowa
history,” the American Red Cross
mounted a relief operation, bringing aid
to tens of thousands of Iowans affected
by tornadoes and floods in the spring and
early summer of 2008.
Many Iowans would need shelter.
Many more would need food, snacks and
water, as would thousands of emergency
responders and volunteers who were
working far from home.
the firSt reSponSe
The Red Cross response in Iowa began
on Sunday, May 25, shortly after a milewide
tornado packing winds of 200
miles an hour demolished a third of the
town of Parkersburg and plowed through
neighboring New Hartford. The same storm
system flooded homes in two counties.
By the next day, the scope of the tornado
damage — 367 homes destroyed and 216
more damaged — became apparent and
neighboring Red Cross chapters rushed in to
provide support.
Two days after the tragedy, Red Cross
leadership assumed responsibility for
on-going sheltering and feeding. The
organization ramped up emergency health
and mental health support, and began
distribution of supplies and financial
assistance.
“Red Cross has helped in every way, shape
and form possible, from the time we wake
up to the time we go to bed,” said Bruce
Recker, who lost his home when a tornado
hit New Hartford, Iowa. He and his family
fled to a Red Cross shelter where they got
three meals a day, medications, emotional
support and assistance for immediate needs.
reSponSe SWeLLS after
tHe midwestern floods
A little more than two weeks later, an early
summer storm crawled across the Midwest,
dumping 31 inches of rain in three days
on a wide swath of the already-saturated
state of Iowa, as well as Nebraska, Illinois,
Indiana, Wisconsin and eventually West
Virginia.
The Red Cross was faced with mounting
the largest relief operation since the
historic Hurricane Katrina, Rita, and Wilma
response in 2005.
Compared to many disasters, the worst of
the flooding unfolded gradually across the
state as rivers swelled and levees burst. Red
Cross disaster assessment in 87 counties put
the number of impacted homes at 13,000,
with more than 3,400 destroyed.
In addition to billions of dollars in losses,
the storms inflicted deep emotional wounds.
Not only were homes and belongings
destroyed; many people lost their jobs when
workplaces were under water, inaccessible
or without power for days. The Red Cross
responded with 100 disaster mental health
personnel.
Over 7,000 families met with caseworkers
at 11 service centers, where Red Cross
workers provided direct emergency
515.243.7681 iowa storms 07
assistance on a case-by-case basis. In addition, Red Cross workers visited the homes
of hundreds of clients in rural areas to offer assistance and support.
“I was surprised they came to us,” said Lloyd Schneckloth, who moved into a
travel trailer on a neighbor’s farm after river levees broke and swamped his home
in Nichols, Iowa. “When they couldn’t locate our family due to the move, they
tracked us down. I don’t know where we would be if it weren’t for the Red Cross,”
he said of the emergency assistance. “They offered us cleaning supplies (too), but
our place is beyond cleaning. It’s just gone.”
To respond to the needs that emerged in the wake of wind and water, Red Cross
teamed up with a wide variety of local, regional and national partners.
The Southern Baptists — longtime partners in the mass feeding field — made it
possible for the Red Cross to serve more than a quarter of a million meals; Catholic
Charities helped the Red Cross connect with Spanish-speaking and church-focused
populations; Church of the Brethren Disaster Child Care teams provided safe
babysitting while parents met with Red Cross caseworkers.
“We can’t thank the Red Cross enough for all they’ve done,” said Vivian Curtis, a
Cedar Rapids resident who took refuge in a Red Cross shelter with her husband.
“I really didn’t know what the Red Cross did, but I really know now. This is
wonderful.”
Families living within the Central Iowa Chapter counties of Polk, Madison and
Marion were also impacted by the Floods of 2008. 168 homes were affected –
many destroyed or sustaining major damage.
Red Cross disaster relief focuses on meeting
When a disaster threatens or strikes, the
Red Cross provides shelter, food, and health
The Red Cross also feeds emergency
family members outside the disaster area,
This year, the Central Iowa Chapter and two
prominent south side community partners
signed agreements that will ensure a
coordinated relief effort in times of disaster.
The Red Cross, Christ the King Parish and
the local Society of Italian-Americans have
agreed to share facilities such as office,
storage and parking space as well as human
resources to provide emergency assistance
to families affected by disaster.
The partnerships proved vital during flash
flooding that occurred this spring in the
Des Moines area. Christ the King Parish
opened its doors as an evacuation shelter,
and members of the Society of Italian-
Americans assisted with feeding and
staffing of the shelter.
Last year, Central Iowa Chapter
deal with the emotional and physical aftershocks of a traumatic event and
to accelerate the normal recovery process. Members of the CISM team are
specially-trained mental health professionals who help emergency services
In 2007-08, ten CISM volunteers conducted 12 debriefings –
Red Cross Helpline, 1-866-GET INFO. Our response center is activated by the
American Red Cross, but our work stations are staffed by local volunteers.
Last year, 95 Central Iowa Chapter volunteers were trained to take
calls through the local Red Cross Response Center Enterprise.
3,461 callers were assisted by central Iowans.
The American Red Cross links members of the U.S. Armed Forces with their
families during a crisis. Twenty-four hours a day, 365 days a year, the Red
Cross quickly sends emergency communications to deployed service members
on behalf of their family. Military members can have peace of mind knowing
that when they are on a mission, in training or stationed far from home – and
leaving cell phones and e-mails behind – they are still connected to home.
While providing service to 1.4 million active duty military personnel and their
families, the Red Cross also reaches out to more than 1.2 million members
of the National Guard and Reserves and their families living in nearly every
community in America.
Red Cross workers in hundreds of chapters and on military installations brief
departing service members and their families regarding available support
services, and they explain how the Red Cross may assist them during the
deployment.
Both active duty and community-based military can count on the Red Cross
to provide emergency communications that link them with their families back
home, access to financial assistance from the military aid societies, counseling,
referral to community resources and assistance to veterans. Red Cross Service
to the Armed Forces personnel form a global network in more than 700
U.S. chapters, 58 military installations worldwide and in forward deployed
locations in Kuwait, Afghanistan and Iraq.
Through the Red Cross Service to Armed Forces program, the
Central Iowa Chapter provided communications and/or other
assistance to 387 members of our armed forces and their families.
Last year, 1,050 military members ready for deployment, and their
For nearly a century, the American Red Cross has prepared people to save lives through
health and safety training. The demand for quality training – training that could save a life,
is increasing – at home, school and in the workplace.
Cpr
Training options include Adult, and Infant & Child CPR. The Red Cross even provides
training that teaches individuals how to use an automated external defibrillator.
first aid
Students taking Red Cross first aid training learn how to respond to emergencies such as:
severe bleeding; broken bones; shock; heat emergencies and more. Pet first aid training
also teaches pet owners the skills necessary to keep ALL members of one’s family safe
following an emergency.
disease prevention education
Presentations are designed for a wide variety of audiences. HIV/AIDS information is
provided to youth groups and adults wanting to know the facts about HIV and AIDS.
Information sessions are also available to those wanting to know more about Hepatitis C,
Measles and Pandemic Flu. Scrubby Bear’s Clean Hands Club is extremely popular with
elementary-aged children and teaches them to “Wash up quick, don’t get sick.”
in 2007-08:
For decades, the American Red Cross has provided basic first aid care to
thousands attending the Iowa State Fair. First aid-trained volunteers work
closely with fair personnel and emergency medical services, to ensure that fair
enthusiasts have a safe experience as they make their way through one of the
most popular events in the U.S.
For the second year, the American Red Cross, Central Iowa Chapter worked
closely with personnel from the World Cup Hy-Vee Triathlon. The Red Cross
provided expertise, lifeguard support and spectator first aid care. There are
many logistics to put in to place and it takes great cooperation among staff and
volunteers.
During this years’ Iowa State Fair, sixty-eight first aid-trained
volunteers helped 3,536 people with basic first aid services.
At the World Cup Hy-Vee Triathlon, 27 lifeguards provided 159
hours of lifeguard support and made close to 50 water rescues.
Twelve first aid-trained volunteers provided 120 hours of first aid
Human services – community telepHone services
& united way 2-1-1
Since 1985, the American Red Cross, Central Iowa Chapter has provided
peer telephone counseling and after-hours answering services through its
community telephone services program. In 1997, United Way of Central Iowa
transferred to the chapter, a program called First Call for Help. The same peer
counselors with access to a vast number of community resources provided
help to each and every caller.
The program evolved again, when in September, 2003, United Way of Central
Iowa and our local Red Cross chapter launched United Way 2-1-1. Accessing
health & human services became easier, as callers had only three numbers to
remember, 2-1-1. Information and referral specialists provide compassion and
information to thousands of callers each year.
In the spring of 2008, our United Way 2-1-1 call center was accredited
by the Alliance of Information & Referral Systems (AIRS). This is no small
achievement. The process has taken over three years of data collection,
training, agency cooperation and more. Robert McKown, Chair, Accreditation
Committee of the AIRS Board of Directors writes, “On behalf of the board and
staff of AIRS, we wish to applaud you and your staff on a job well done. You
have worked very hard for this recognition and should be very proud of your
excellent information and referral program.”
2-1-1 information & referral specialists handled 39,550 calls in
which people were looking for information or in need of referrals
to agencies or programs that could assist them. Requests include
housing, food assistance, and a variety of other human service
needs.
Cyclone Nargis hit the southwestern coast
of Myanmar on May 2nd, leaving massive
destruction in its wake. Tens of thousands
were reported missing or dead.
Then on May 12th, a massive 7.9 magnitude
earthquake rocked southwestern China.
The Red Cross Society of China initiated a
relief operation in a dangerous and dynamic
environment.
Help came from here in central Iowa,
when our Red Cross chapter partnered
with the Society of Burma and the Chinese
Association of Iowa to coordinate support
of relief efforts in Myanmar and China. The
most efficient way for Iowans to assist was
by making donations to the American Red
Activities conducted at the Iowa Asian
the American Red Cross’ International
role, and the relief efforts being made in
Myanmar and China. Donation collection
points were located in the Burmese Village,
Chinese Village and Pioneer Hospitality
were provided and volunteers stationed at
the villages gave festival visitors information
regarding areas affected by the cyclone
and by the earthquake. Local high school
students wearing Red Cross disaster vests
circulated in the crowd and asked people
if they would like to give a donation to the
International Response Fund. The total
raised at the festival was $2,532.69!
Then, on May 22nd, KCCI-TV 8 held a
telethon during the evening newscast.
Members of the Burmese and Chinese
communities staffed the phones, conducted
media interviews and spoke with callers
about the dire need for help in their native
at $5,000, but $8,780 was raised!
Last year, Red Cross staff
Awards are offered in ten categories: Fire & Rescue, Law Enforcement, Health Care Worker,
