ISSUE 2 N E W S L E T T E R APR - JUN 2008
A
Hello Lockwood!
Spring is here and 2008 is zooming by.
In this issue you will see stories on
departmental changes and news (and
there is plenty to talk about), and our
people (200 strong and counting).
You’ll see a note from our President,
Mike Lockwood and his thoughts. Plus
an update on Valve School with Tom
Lockwood, Vice President. You’ll
(hopefully) notice the contest is still
running for naming this publication-that
means we haven’t found one yet, so
keep the ideas coming in! We thought
it would be nice to share information on
where and how our company is helping
others. We will begin to spotlight
branches in the order they were
opened and first up is Edmonton. Of
course, a welcome to our new hires, a
shout-out to birthdays and births, as
well as the beginning of our Tenure
Section. If you don’t see a story on
your department yet or branch, you
will. We’ll continue to do stories about
our people but need involvement with
our branches - please send us
information. This is a quarterly publication
and we want your news! Send pictures, call
and check in, forward emails... Sometimes
no news is good news but this involves
Lockwood worldwide! Steve Shubnell
joins me this month on putting this
publication out. We hope you will enjoy it
and give us feedback and ideas. This is
about and for ALL of Lockwood- we want to
involve everyone and have everyone
involved.
EDMONTON
BRANCH SPOTLIGHT-
Edmonton - Capital of the Canadian province of Alberta. Lockwood first opened shop in 1999 with the help
of Giovanni Capasso (now operating our Milan, Italy office). In Jan. 2002 we relocated to the Sherwood
Park office. We handled such projects as NovaE3, Shell Athabasca, Syncrude UE1, and Opti/Nexen. Cam
Wowk manages Edmonton where twenty five people currently work (and continue to grow).
A proud moment recently when The RC MP (The Royal Canadian Mounted Police) Dog Unit asked about
using our facility for training purposes. They will begin using the facility in 3/2008. A sign will be posted
onsite saying Lockwood is an official training facility. They will use our warehouse, tent and fenced area for
their dog training a couple of times a month. (Send us pictures Edmonton!).
The facility has 75,000 sq. ft. of office and warehouse space to house our HUGE IN-STOCK INVENTORY,
plus an additional 24,000 sq. ft. provided by the “tent”.
Mike Lockwood....
“Moderation? It’s mediocrity, fear and confusion in disguise.”
~Dan Millman, The Way of the Peaceful Warrior
“A warrior never gives up what he loves, he finds the love in what he does.”
~The Peaceful Warrior
“Once we know and accept what our limits are, we can go beyond them.”
~Albert Einstein
“To show your true ability is always, in a sense, to surpass the limits of your ability, to go
a little beyond them: to dare, to seek, to invent; it is at such a moment that new talents
are revealed, discovered and realized.”
~Simone de Beauvoir
There you have it - that is our simple quest. To evaluate and understand each of our individual
strengths and weaknesses. To then provide the challenge and opportunity for each of us to seek personal
growth and satisfaction in our own right. And then, finally, to combine the skill sets of our individuals
into a single united front.
This is the path to improve performance necessary to meet the expectation of our clients, our vendors,
and ourselves.
Quality & Safety
Steve Shubnell has successfully delivered Quality Training to all of Houston. Benny
Howard, Quality Manager, is now providing branch training and is meeting the challenges
that come with the new Quality Process. Benny states “the customer is our final
inspector, so our quality must be the best”. Lisa Bollich, Quality Admin. Asst., has
stepped up to the plate in her additional duties. Safety & Quality are here to stay and
will remain the highest priority to Lockwood International.
MRO...
. Lockwood hosted the ExxonMobil QIT (Quality Improvement Team) meeting on 2/8/08. The
monthly meeting is for our client, ExxonMobil and all their local vendors to discuss different operational aspects of their
contract, such as delivery, receivables, etc. The companies in attendance were: BeAed, Exel, Lamons Gasket, McJunkin
Redman, Motion Industries, Triplex, Inc., Wholesale Electric, and Wilson Supply. Jerry Reeves, or “Fuzzy” as he is known, of
ExxonMobil attended for the last time, as he retired. Cylynne Calicutt, Assistant MRO Manager, and Judy Collier, Facilities
Manager, organized the entire event and did a fabulous job according to Cindy Williams, MRO Manager. The event was a
huge success and Mike Lockwood was even able to attend. Each company is allowed two attendees and the host company
provides breakfast, lunch, facilities to meet (all that goes with that meeting), and giveaways. Cylynne’s group had the room
ready with Lockwood coffee cups, the smartboard up and running, and praline giveaways (which were
a hit!). The event went off without a hiccup considering we were originally scheduled to host the meeting
until April. Our group was ready, and did a
fantastic job.
MRO SALES
Ryan Randazzo is
training with Shaun
Carter in MRO Sales. Ryan
transferred from Procurement
and is learning the daily MRO
Sales requirements. Shaun says
the pace is faster and less technical
so it differs from the Project
Sales here at Lockwood. Lots of
growth on the horizon for
this department too and
we’ll keep you
posted.
Human Resources & Payroll/Benefits
Darlene Garza has taken over Lockwood’s Human Resources Department. Deya Martinez has transferred from Procurement
and joined her team as Assistant and they will be responsible for all new hiring duties such as locating new quality individuals
to join Lockwood's team, but also security - employee ID badges and drug testing and eventually training. This expansion allows
Margaret Graff, our Payroll & Benefits Coordinator to focus on her main duties which is payroll and looking out for us
regarding our benefits. She is responsible for all of us getting paid (overnight express to branches if anyone else was wondering).
Margaret can take care of you if you need to change your tax exemptions-just call and ask for a new W-4. The next benefits
enrollment period will be November or December and it will be here before you know it.
Left to right - Margaret Graff - Payroll & Benefits Deya Martinez
and Darlene Garza
the years 1979 - 1998 and see what names pop up. Next edition we’ll pick up at 1999. So, who
has been here the longest? To answer that we look at payroll records beginning with 1979...
Mike Owens (Warehouse Mgr.) and Rudy Zenon (Project Lead) appear to have been on payroll
since 1979. Then comes Mr. George, (Tagging Technician) 1981; Joanne Thornton was first here
in 1992 and rehired in 2002. June Yonkman, (Inside Sales Mgr.) began in 1994 (technical training
provided by none other than Tom Lockwood), Joe Delaney, (Forged Analyst) 1997; then Mr. Lee,
Crate Construction, 1997. Mr. Lee has worked with the Lockwoods since 1981 or 82 but wasn’t
on payroll until 1997. Bill Licarione, MRO Sales, and Cynthia Pantoja, Executive Assistant, both
hired on in 1997; and Wilma Hand (Shorts - Texas City), and Daniel Martinez, Warehouse, began
in 1998. Bill Licarione states “with almost 11 years at Lockwood I’ve seen it grow from a small
office and warehouse inside the loop with 13 total employees, to a world renown corporation.
In the 28 years I’ve been in this industry this is the most solid company I’ve worked for.” The
sentiment is unanimous-anyone who has worked at
Lockwood for any length of time tells us “incredible”
on Lockwood’s growth and evolution.
fyi
Just a reminder to check out the N drive for all kinds of helpful how-to’s
on AS400 and other computer related training. Renee Roberts is still and
will always be our resident AS/400 Queen.
Also, we have a demonstration “movie” (very short tutorial that shows you
how to perform a task) on the J drive (J:\Demonstrations). It demonstrates
how to insert our brand new logos into your documents.
Regarding the demo’s - audio is required and if you can’t hear anything,
have your supervisor send a request to helpdesk@lockwoodint.com and
we’ll get you hooked up (no pun intended) with speakers.
Tenure
Looking back on Lockwood’s history we delve into tenure. Lockwood
opened its doors in 1977 by
Frank Lockwood. We look at
Top: George Allen, Joann Thornton, Rudy Zenon,
Bill Licarione, sitting-Mike Owens.
Did you know?...
Cynthia Pantoja
... S.p.A. - have you seen it? What does it mean?
You will see it behind OMB’s name, and others..... It is
the Italian equivalent to “Incorporated” and stands
Ch-ch-changes
international
Another exciting change at Lockwood
is our new Marketing Department.
Laura Fitzgerald heads up the team
with Steve Shubnell. Our focus is commercial
and technical marketing.
Crazy busy (as we all are), but we’re
developing some basic marketing materials
such as product line sheets, reference
list, and leave-behinds for our
sales force. Koleta Parsley is working
closely with the team coordinating
print jobs and teaching us plenty. We
will soon begin revamping our website
(you will love the plans we have).
The Valve Identification book is receiving
its third remake and you will all
enjoy the CAD drawings that Luca
Radrizzani has helped Lockwood acquire
( ).
We’re getting to know the branches
and appreciate the feedback and insight
we’ve received. The more we
know, the better we can help Lockwood.
F A C I L I T I E S
We visited with Judy Collier, Lockwood’s Facilities Manager to catch up on her
happenings. Judy has been very busy since joining Lockwood in 2007 beginning
with the big move into the new building. Now, she is concentrating on renovating
Buildings A & C. Although A is finished, as Betty reported, Building C is
still a couple of months away from having coffee service ordered! She will be
lending her expertise traveling to other branches to implement projects and
improvements.
Locally, Judy has been responsible for the new security system which involved
more than the obvious - picture ID badges for every employee, setting up entry
credentials, passwords, etc. The great benefit of the new system is security
for our people and property. Eventually, the
system will allow for time tracking (YES - no
more time sheets) but right now its our key to
get in and our proof that we belong here (badges
must be worn and visible at all times). The
administration of the system will be handed over
to HR once all the kinks are worked out.
Furthermore, Judy has started Lockwood’s recycling
program. All empty toner cartridges and
aluminum cans are being collected and she is
working with Furr’s High School who will use the
proceeds to subsidize field trips, buy backpacks
and school supplies, as well as instructional
Judy Collier material not covered by the budget.
John Yonkman is now in charge of Material Management and we spent a few minutes learning about his team and
plans. His team consists of Aladdin Hussein, Vince Veloz, and Tony Galan.
Highest priority is implementation of cycle counting which will, in theory, eliminate
year-end inventory (do I hear a “YES!”). As with all change, it will take time
but he has big plans and high hopes that this will bring our inventory into focus as
accurate. The new system will also allow for discovery of current material handling
problems to reduce risk of error. The plan is to implement in Houston and work
through any problems before rolling it out to all of the branches. John is looking at
all possibilities and although he may not have THE answer, he feels trying different
variances will allow for THE solution to become apparent. He is calculating
John Yonkman
the redesign of the warehouse which, once in place, should further reduce the risk of errors.
It will allow less product expertise to be expected by warehouse personnel and a
more intuitive process on how to pull and track product.
Our group spent a week in Palm Desert, California attending the
TUG (The User Group) annual User-to-User Networking and education
conference for Users of Infor Distribution Software. As
you know, Lockwood uses APLUS, which is a family of Infor’s
product offering. Our people came back excited and educated.
Those who attended include Alan Walls (IT Manager), Renee Roberts
(AS/400 Training Specialist), Donna Wells (Operations Manager),
and Adam Adams (Report Specialist). Renee relays that she
participated in labs, sat in on multiple training sessions and networked
with many users who she will collaborate with to further
help Lockwood optimize our performance. According to Alan,
“this conference gave us an opportunity to participate in the improvement
process of the software, learn new solutions to approach
various APLUS issues; and most importantly, meet and
discuss with other APLUS users about their company’s issues and
solutions, as they’ve tried to improve their business. We all came
back educated and inspired.”
Need-to-know News
Business According to June
As predicted, 2008
has started out with a
bang!
We are very excited
to announce the signing
of three MEGA multimillion
dollar project
agreements:
•NCP Project in
June Yonkman
Al-Jubail, Kingdom of
Saudi Arabia
•SPT Project (Singapore Parallel
Project) on Jurong Island, Singapore
•Saudi Kayan Olefins Project in Al
Jubail, Kingdom of Saudi Arabia
This 08 is only the beginning. 20
will nd exciting be a very busy a
year with many challenges as we
continue to grow our company.
Best Regards,
June Yonkman
Donna Wells, Operations Manager,
spent some time with us regarding the
TUG Conference also (see story). She
is excited about the ideas that were
spurned by attending. The three big areas
of most potential she saw for Lockwood
were: 1) upgrade of our APLUS
AS/400, 2) Value Service Add-In, and 3)
Max Recall. She feels we can tweak our
processes and the tools we use (software)
to be able to better capture our usage,
which will improve overall proficiency.
Procurement, Sales, and Project Coordinators
would all be affected by changes,
but she says “if a company isn’t changing,
it isn’t growing
and Lockwood
is definitely growing.”
It’s going to
take group thinking
with representation
from all
departments but
Donna Wells
she feels the
changes we make
will benefit us all multifold in the long
run.
CFO
We checked in with Betty Allen, Chief Financial Officer, and she gave us a
synopsis of her group’s activities.
The week of 3/10/08 marked the completion of the renovations of Building A
according to Betty Allen. “The furniture is in and coffee service ordered”.
(Nothing says “ready for business” like ordering coffee service).
The new space accommodates a shipping office, a dedicated room for the tag
machines, a much needed inspector’s office, and of course renovation of the
restrooms and kitchen, as well as locker room expansion.
The completion of Building A means Building B
renovations are in progress. (We’ll keep you posted).
As for the new facility of Building C, Ms. Betty says
there are still finishing touches, such as artwork, etc. but
the major issues have been resolved (such as ventilation
for the server room).
Ms. Allen is also trying to better our crew. She is
responsible for providing a training program for key staff
Betty Allen
members entitled “Bullets for Managers” which was
presented 3/20/08.
VALVE SCHOOL 201
Tom Lockwood will present Valve School 201 this Spring. The
training will be a follow-up to Valve
School 101, which will be a offered on a
continuing basis eventually. The topics set
for presentation will include actuation,
pressure classes & low-temperature ratings,
valve applications, cryogenics and bellow seals,
and large OD valves (SER A & SER B)
Those who attended Valve 101 shall be invited
to Valve 201. Please contact Steve Shubnell
if you wish to attend either class.
Great things on the horizon this year; it’s
starting off with a bang. First of all, the
Procurement Department has evolved for
two ladies to take the helm. Amanda
Marksberry (Purchasing Manager) and
Cassie Pedigo (Sourcing Manager) are extremely
excited and hopeful of being a
great “source” for our Sales Department, so
that Lockwood can increase our presence in
the industry and take us to that next level.
They have a great team which includes
Brian Nelson, who is our Ball Valve Sourcing
Specialist and has just completed our
new pricing list for TY. Thanks Brian....we
really appreciate the updated information.
While Ryan Randazzo has transferred to
MRO, the group has gained a few new faces
such as David Castillo, Janet Anderson and
Sharon Montague. David is sourcing our
bronze and iron, while Janet is working with
Pam Moore, Brian Nelson
Stephanie Nesbitt as our Cast Steel Purchasing Assistant. Sharon performs Receiving. Wow. This
group is growing by leaps and bounds and there are still a couple more positions that need to be
filled, currently “TBD” (to be determined) status. Lockwood is doing more than keeping up with the
