Astec, Inc. organizes group to specialize in the
making of burners for hot-mix asphalt plants
Astec hot-mix asphalt plants are
known for their high quality of
workmanship. Now, Astec has
the ability to coordinate their
plants’ state-of-the-art technology
with the technology of the burners
that help them operate. Astec, Inc.
recently announced the formation
of a new manufacturing division
that specializes in the design and
assembly of burners for hot-mix
asphalt plants. Flametec, as it is
now called, will help improve the
quality of Astec plants by applying
their high standards of engineering
and workmanship to develop a
new line of burners. Flametec is
located at Astec’s facilities in
Chattanooga, Tennessee. It is
directed by Bruce Irwin, former
head of engineering at Hauck
Manufacturing Company. Irwin
joined Astec with extensive
experience in burner design,
manufacture, field service, and
sales. Every aspect of the burner
design is focused on improving
the performance of Astec hot-mix
asphalt plants. The Astec electrical
and controls groups provides
applicable design and installation
of electrical and control components
and wiring. And all of the
new burners are supported by
Astec’s service department.
Flametec has begun by designing
the Whisper Jet total air burner
(see related story on Page 37), an
original-equipment burner
intended for the Astec plants. The
new line of Flametec burners will
gradually develop from this point,
and the goal is for Flametec to
completely meet all of Astec’s own

Robert McArthur is now director of
international sales. He brings with

Hoggatt has been appointed to
the position of regional sales
manager for the Mideastern United
States, including Michigan, Wisconsin,
Ohio, Indiana, Kentucky,
Illinois and eastern Missouri. He
brings with him 20 years of salesmanagement

CIMA and EMI approve
consolidation into one
industry association
The memberships of the Equipment
Manufacturers Institute (EMI) and
Construction Industry Manufacturers
Association (CIMA) recently
voted to approve the consolidation
of those two industry trade groups.
The new group, called the Association
of Equipment Manufacturers (AEM),
will officially begin operation on
January 1, 2002. With the consolidation,
AEM will have a membership
of more than 700 firms, representing
more than 200 product lines, with
the machines, equipment, products,
and services used worldwide in the
construction, agricultural, industrial,
mining, forestry, utility industries,
and materials-handling. For more

Roadtec introduces new paver with increased
versatility and durability for diversified jobs
The new Roadtec RP-150 rubber-tired paver is designed to handle a
variety of jobs, including commercial projects, city or residential streets,
or Interstate shoulders. The unit’s 8-ft. (2.5-m) width allows it to work
on narrow roadways without blocking two lanes of traffic—and also
makes it a non-permitted load. The smaller size also means this paver
has a tighter turning radius for increased maneuverability. To obtain

Save money by reducing moisture content with
this new method of stockpile reclamation
There could be hidden profit in your aggregate stockpiles. Consider these
figures: By reducing aggregate moisture from 5% to 3%, you can save
perhaps $0.43 per ton in fuel costs. And for a plant that produces
300,000 tons per year (272,150 tonnes per year), that adds up to
$129,000 in additional profit. The way to discover these benefits is to
use a special reclaimer that pulls the driest material from the top of the
stockpile—not the wet material at the bottom. To get more information

JCI rolls out a new line of incline vibrating screens
that offer a wide variety of innovative features
The first in a new line of incline vibrating screens are now available
from JCI. The 8 x 20-ft. (2.5 x 6-m) three-deck model has been
released, with other sizes under development. Innovative design features
include heavy-duty steel side plates with enhanced reinforcing plates,
pre-drilled incline mounting brackets that are adjustable from 15 to
25 degrees, and a maintenance-free timing belt for long wear life. To

Roadtec announces several new additions and appointments
to the company’s sales and marketing organization
Over the past year, Roadtec, Inc.
has made several new additions to
the company’s sales and marketing
team. In the paving and material
transfer department of Roadtec,
Richard Draheim assumed the
position of Marketing Manager. He
will also have full responsibility for
the Paving Professionals Workshop
training schools at Roadtec. Terry
Leber has been appointed to the
position of Marketing Manager for
Roadtec milling and recycling
products. In this position, Leber
will be responsible for product
development, sales training, and
the for the overall exposure of
Roadtec products to existing and
future Roadtec customers. In the
Roadtec sales department, Tommy
Chastain is the new Regional Sales
Manager for the Central States
territory: Montana, North Dakota,
Nebraska, Iowa, Kansas, Missouri,

Notes from South Africa: The latest news and
information from Osborn Engineered Products
Since it became a part of the Astec Industries, Inc. Family of Companies
last year, Osborn Engineered Products SA (Pty.) Ltd. has continued
to be a prominent figure in the sub-Saharan African mining and

Osborn completes Wankie Colliery expansion—Osborn recently
helped Zimbabwe’s leading coal producer, Wankie Colliery, complete
a major expansion that will enable them to meet a growing market
need. The addition of a double-roll crusher and screening unit with
bypass facilities and a high-capacity wet screen system will enable
Wankie Colliery to produce “washed peas”—a small-sized grade of
coal that has specialized production demands.
ASPASA Convention hosted by Osborn—The Aggregate and Sand
Producers Association of South Africa (ASPASA) recently held their
annual convention at the Osborn facilities in Johannesburg, South Africa.
Representatives from local mines and quarries, government organizations,
educational institutions, and the press were present for the event.
According to Osborn officials, the convention was a great success,
drawing representatives from about 80% of all the quarries in South Africa.
Telsmith and Osborn celebrate golden anniversary—It was 50 years
ago when Telsmith and Osborn signed their first license agreement.
The two companies recently celebrated their anniversary at Osborn’s

renewal. The Asphalt Pavement
Alliance (APA) is now accepting
nominations for the new Perpetual
Pavement Award, an industry
award that recognizes these
long-lasting hot-mix asphalt
pavements. Applications for the
award will be evaluated by the
National Center for Asphalt Technology
(NCAT) at Auburn University,
Alabama. Local and federal agencies
will also be asked to review the
applications. All of the nominated
pavements that qualify will receive

represents the largest financial
commitment to public education by
