The Holt & Sheringham Guide 2010 “Where beams of imagination play,The memory’s soft figures melt away.” – Alexander Pope
Welcome to The Holt & Sheringham Guide 2010.
This is the second publication we have done for Holt and the first time we’ve included Sheringham in
the same guide. We hope you find it as easy to use and informative as our previous publications. We
would like to thank all those that support us during our time creating these Guides.
You’ll find that the sections are colour coded and the towns are split into their own areas so you
can find what you’re looking for with ease. As usual we have included an events diary to help you
plan your year ahead and a whole host of useful numbers, websites and information about Holt,
Sheringham and the local area.
North Norfolk is a stunning part of the county, the coastline being among our favourite places to visit
at any time of the year. With Holt just a stones throw from the coast and Sheringham right on the
beach, whether partaking in a spot of retail therapy or enjoying some fabulous weather on a day out
at the beach you will find some great places to visit. With the connecting trains from Sheringham to
Holt why not enjoy both towns while you’re there – they really are worth taking the time to explore.
Locals and visitors should both find this booklet useful all year round, of course if you have any
feedback we would be glad to hear from you.
Enjoy reading our Guide, and even more so, visiting both Holt and Sheringham to see what
wonderful little towns they are.
Sophie & Len
The Holt and Sheringham Guide has been produced by Guided Media. We do try to include all the businesses
know so we can be sure to include you in the next publication. Guided Media also produce a number of
other publications so if you are interested in promoting your business further please ask us for more
details. We love to hear what our customers think so if you have any feedback please do contact us:
Holt - a f ine Georgian town.
Holt is a special place with a distinctive personality. It’s popular with
both residents and visitors because the streets, alleyways and attractive
buildings have retained the historic character of the town. That’s why people
love to visit the individual shops, explore the galleries and sample the
restaurants and delis. The experience is enjoyable and totally different from
the boring sameness and global brands of so many high streets today.
In 2008 Holt celebrated the 300th year anniversary of the Great Fire of
Holt of 1708, an event which destroyed most of buildings in the town.
(Learn more about the Great Fire by visiting Shirehall Plain and seeing the
commemorative sign there). But tragedy was turned into triumph when the
re-building programme produced the beautiful Georgian market town of Holt
as we know it today.
Enjoy exploring the town with its many attractions and learn more about its
history. Illustrated copies of ‘A Stroll Through Georgian Holt’, published by
The Holt Society, are available from bookshops.
A little bit of Holt history...
Holt. The heart of the town was rebuilt
after the Great Fire of 1708, away from
the church and closer to the market place.
This accounts for the predomination of 18th
century buildings and the designation of Holt
as ‘a fine Georgian Town’.
For centuries, the common land known as
Spouts Hills has provided grazing and water.
From Victorian times a pumping station
supplied water to a tower on Shirehall Plain
from where it was distributed for the townsfolk
of Holt. The springs would not only have
provided pure water for public use but will
have filled early horse-drawn fire engines too.
“Courage doesn’t always roar. Sometimes courage is the quiet voice at the end of the day saying, “I will try again tomorrow.”
– Mary Anne Radmacher 13

HOLT OPEN SPACES
Little Hills: An area of three acres of mixed
woodland to the north of the A148. The
centre of Little Hills or Horn Pits as it is also
known, is a grassy hollow, probably created by
local quarrying. Footpaths cross the site from
Letheringsett Hill and the path running north-east
links to New Street.
Spout Hills: Walk just 150 yards from the
pineapple-topped obelisk at the west end of Holt
High Street and you reach Spout Hills, a 14 acre
green space, rich in wildlife and with a fascinating
local history. Spout Hills is an attractive place to
go for a quiet walk, for young and old to enjoy
and in the summer, for its colourful wild flowers.
Access to the Hills can also be gained from the
Letheringsett Road, near the Old Rectory, or from
the disused railway line.
Methodist Memorial Garden: This little haven
in the centre of Holt is enjoyed by visitors (as it is
near the Main Albert Street car park), people who
work in the town and residents who live in the
town centre. Managed and maintained by Holt
Town Council the garden is open during the day
time from April until October.
Holt Country Park: Only a short walk from the
centre of Holt. Just follow the brown signs from
the church end of the market place. Alternatively
there is a car park on the Norwich Road. There
is a Visitor Centre, toilets and waymarked walks
including an Easy Access Trail. Keep an eye out
for a viewing tower, pond, sculptures, totem pole
and adventure play area. The park is open all year
round and always has something going on.
Sheringham
Originally a small North Norfolk fishing village the arrival of the railways in
1887 turned Sheringham into a popular destination for visitors from far and
wide. Over the years it has expanded into a thriving town with many diverse
shops, places to eat, and places to visit.
Famously Sheringham has been awarded ten consecutive European Blue
Flags for the quality & cleanliness of its beaches and for achieving the Best
Coastal Resort Silver Gilt Award 2008 in Anglia in Bloom and Silver Gilt
Anglia in Bloom 2008 & 2009.
Sheringham people are well known for their outgoing, approachable, honest,
warm and friendly manner. Geographically, Sheringham sits in a truly unique
location ‘twixt sea and pine’ and benefits from the very best that nature
can offer. Sandy beaches, rock pools, waves, the vibrancy of spring, hot
summers, glowing autumn sunsets, bracing winters, pine forests, hills, cliffs,
heaths and so much more.
Freshly caught shellfish, locally baked bread, excellent food shops, fine wine
and ale, European, Indian, Chinese and Thai cuisine, putting greens, the
theatre and live music.
Sheringham’s architecture and history have played host to visitors from
the world over from the arrival of the first steam train encouraging them
to relax and unwind in its unhurried and natural surroundings. A town of
fine local businesses, Sheringham’s heritage calls proudly and its sons are
fondly and sympathetically remembered from elephants to mammoths,
lifeboatmen to shantymen.
We hope you enjoy your visit to Sheringham.
SHERINGHAM TOWN CLOCK
The clock tower, or Town Clock as it is generally referred to is a
focal point of the town of Sheringham in Norfolk, UK.
It was originally built as a reservoir and was erected in what was
then known as Lower Sheringham in 1862 at a cost of £220 and
water was piped from a spring.
Sheringham Town ClockThere were troughs at the reservoir for
animals to drink from.
Women would go to the reservoir with buckets to collect water for domestic use, sometimes
they would carry the buckets on their shoulders similar to the way milk maids carried their
milk.
It was fitted with a clock given by Miss Mary Pym in 1903 and adapted for use as a pleasant
shelter for the weary shopper.
The reservoir is not now in use as a water source and has not been for some years.
THE LOBSTER POTTIES
The Lobster Potties came into being as an entry for the Sheringham Carnival with the aim
of fund raising for the Sheringham Health Centre. Since they did not know anything about
Morris Dancing, nor did they know who to ask for advice, they invented the whole thing!
Between they made up two or three dances to some taped music, made cross bands (which
are called baldricks) and bell pads and set about practicing. Several weeks later they were not
much better than when they’d started, but regardless they joined the procession and danced
their way round town. The rest, as they say, is history.
The Potties are a mixed side, they dance their own style of Morris dancing based on North
West Clog and Garland, which some people call the North Norfolk Tradition. Each year,
on the first Saturday in July, they host the Sheringham Lobster Potty Morris Dance Festival,
which sees the coming together of over 20 Morris sides from all over the country and
sometimes even further afield. They practice most Wednesdays during the winter months.
They’re always looking for more people to join them so if you fancy getting involved you
can call 01263 821514 or email t.chadwick@btinternet.com
I am primarily a painter, but I
also enjoy working in textiles,
jewellery and, more recently,
glass. My principal elements
are colour and pattern and my
starting places is observation
and a personal responsse to real things and
places. I also work on the theme of ‘still-life’ and
sometimes see my landscapes in this way. I
enjoy looking for image in the marine, urban and
‘proper’ landscape. My sources for the last forty
years have been diverse, but there are recurring
themes of boats and harbours of the East Coast,
trees and horizons and the looking down on
things. ‘Art’ should be available to as many who
can make it,or like it, or ‘to whom it speaks’.
SHERINGHAM LITTLE THEATRE
Sheringham Little Theatre, which boasts of having the smallest
stage in a professional theatre in the country and only 180 seats,
has been a much loved institution in the town throughout its
history, whether as town hall, ‘flea-pit’ or theatre.
In 2004 the exterior of the theatre received a much-needed
make-over and in 2005 proceeds from “An Evening with Michael
Palin” were put towards new exterior signs for the Little Theatre.
Most recently, in January 2007 a Lottery Awards For All grant
enabled the Theatre to refurbish The Hub Coffee Bar and this is
now used for the benefit of young people with regular workshops.
The Little Theatre is proud to host one of the last surviving summer repertory seasons and
in 2006 the theatre, for the first time, produced the professional season in-house. Following
the enormous success, the theatre continues to produce a 10-week professional programme
of traditional summer sea-side repertory theatre.
Upcher family of Sheringham Hall for the use of the fishermen of what was then Lower
Sheringham, a small fishing hamlet. These lifeboats are usually referred to as the private,
Upcher or fishermen’s lifeboats. The first of these, called the Upcher, was a fishing boat
also used as a rescue boat. The second, the Augusta, was the first purpose-built lifeboat in
Sheringham. It no longer exists, but its story is a fascinating one. The last of the three, the
Henry Ramey Upcher (HRU), replaced the Augusta. It was in use until 1935 and can still be
seen in its original shed, which forms part of the Centre.
There is also information about, and a photographic record of, some of the fishermen who
crewed the private lifeboats, many of whom worked in and around the Fishing Sheds, with
displays about how they won their livings from the dangerous waters of the North Sea and
other aspects of their lives.
2010 opening times will be Wednesday to Friday – 12 noon to 4 pm from 1st April to the end
of September. During the peak holiday season and especially during the school holidays the
Centre will also be open on Tuesdays and Saturdays – 12 noon to 4 pm. Admission is free,
but voluntary contributions are requested.
LOCAL INTEREST
EXPERIENCE SHERINGHAM ‘Much more than a day at the Seaside’
Experience Sheringham is a brand for Sheringham, developed
as a result of work during the re-generation programme of
SheringhamPlus. In addition to establishing a brand, a web
site, www.experiencesheringham.com, was set up and information
leaflets and posters prepared and distributed. In 2009
Experience Sheringham was taken over by Upcher Community
Partnership, the Local Area Partnership for Sheringham and
surrounding area.
The web site has proved extremely successful since being set up
in 2007 and gives visitors a wide range of information concerning
attractions, places to stay and places to eat plus general information about the area, and
is well worthy a visit, even by locals. Indeed visitors to the site in 2009 numbered 79318
an average of 217 a day. Two leaflets were produced, ‘What’s on Around Sheringham’ and
‘Where to Shop, Stay, Eat and Go’ plus monthly posters displaying information of events
happening in the town and area.
Having taken over Experience Sheringham Upcher Partnership will be continuing the web
site, leaflets and posters for the foreseeable future, although, as with most things today, this
does depend on funding being available from advertising or additional sources.
NEW HERITAGE TRAIL FOR SHERINGHAM
The Trails group of SheringhamPlus has now produced a booklet which enables residents and
visitors to explore the history of the town on foot. This is a revised and updated version of
the Heritage Walk booklet written mainly by Peter Brooks in 1991, with illustrations by Mick
Bensley. Sheringham Preservation Society is responsible for placing the blue plaques on the most
important locations in the town. Sheringham as a town, did not come into being until the end of
the 19th century, greatly helped by the arrival of the railway in 1887. Despite this relatively short
history, compared to older market towns, there has been a huge amount of change over the last
hundred years, and this can be discovered by taking this walk round the town. The trail takes you
on a 1.5 or 2 mile walk through he older parts of the town where you will discover the colourful
history of the buildings you pass, from the site of a ruined chapel, an open air entertainment
venue and, obviously, a fishing boat boat-shed. For instance, standing in Wyndham Street today,
in a heavily built-up area, it is difficult to imagine that 200 years ago there stood the ruins of a
medieval chapel, surrounded by grazing. The image at the top of the page shows the ruins of St
Nicholas chapel. Threads running through the trail illustrate the former dominance of the fishing
industry, the impact of tourism, the distinguished visitors to the town, the heroism of the lifeboat
crews and the importance of the railway. The Heritage Trail booklet is available from local outlets
at £1, alongside the Sheringham Trails Booklet also at £1. As a special offer, buy either booklet
and get the other absolutely free!
HOLT MUSEUM TRUST (Registered Charity Number 1104185)
The Holt Museum Trust is a registered charity which has been set
up to create a museum for Holt and the surrounding area.
Our historical market town in North Norfolk with Roman
and Saxon History, listed in the Domesday Book, home of
Gresham’s School, destroyed in the fire of 1708 and rebuilt into
the Georgian Town you see today has no museum to record this
rich and varied history. But Holt Museum, which holds valuable
archive/collections, welcomes visitors to their Web Site.
Our campaign is to raise funds to purchase a suitable building to record all this history for
future generations. Our Campaign started in August 2003 and raised £15,407.00 in its first
year entirely from supporters. The Support Continues Our funds now exceed £25,354.
To help raise money we have various publications available online from £9.95.
A MAGNIFICENT PART OF OUR COASTAL HERITAGE
Nearly 130 years ago, a theatre critic named
Clement Scott wrote a series of travel articles
about the North Norfolk coast for the Daily
Telegraph. Inspired by the scarlet poppies
growing along the cliffs and in the fields,
Scott coined the name Poppyland – and the
name has endured to this day.
The heritage Poppy Line steam railway from
Sheringham along the coast to Weybourne
and up through the heathlands to Holt
preserves part of the 1887 railway that
opened up the area to holidaymakers.
Named as Britain’s best full-size heritage
railway trip by The Sunday Times, the views
of coast and country from the train are little
short of breathtaking; and the three Victorian
stations effortlessly evoke the atmosphere of
a bygone age.
Steam trains run daily from 1st April to 31st
October, and there are lunch, evening dining
and Murder Mystery trains. For details, pick
up a leaflet from the Leisure Target racks,
visit www.nnrailway.co.uk or call 01263 820
800 (10am to 4pm).
There’s also a full programme of special
events, including the 9th annual Beer Festival
at Sheringham Station (16th-18th July) and
the famous ‘40s Weekend (18th/19th Sept).
In March 2010 the Poppy Line was
reconnected to the national rail network, when
the reinstated level crossing at Sheringham
saw the first passenger train over the road for
46 years. The occasional-use crossing will
create extra business for the town outside
the main holiday season, with special steam
trains bringing enthusiasts from all over the
country.
The Poppy Line was runner up for Best
Norfolk Attraction in the EDP Tourism
Awards 2009.
independent shops offering everything you desire and more.
Two small towns, full of character and steeped in history, you won’t be
dissapponited when you stop by to explore them.
