When we designed the Vancouver Convention

Centre, we carefully planned every detail from the

building materials right down to the finishing touches.

We want to make every event at our awardwinning

convention centre a lasting and inspiring

experience. But a building, no matter how fantastic,

True, this is a big space. But it’s a space

with purpose. Functional space. Aesthetically

pleasing space. Inspiring space. A space that takes

full advantage of its beautiful surroundings.

The Vancouver Convention Centre includes

the iconic East building and the newer West building,

joined by a 295 ft (90 m) covered connector with

spectacular harbour views. The entire facility sits

in a commanding waterfront position in the heart

of downtown Vancouver. With terraces and scenic

walkways surrounding both buildings, a stroll around

the facility reveals views of mountains, ocean and the

city skyline. Step inside the Vancouver Convention

Centre and those spectacular views permeate, while

the outside is easily accessible throughout the facility.

It’s hard not to be inspired with dramatic floor-toceiling

windows on every side of the West building

offering breathtaking scenery and the opportunity

for an extraordinary event.

Covering four city blocks – or 1.1 million ft 2

(102,200 m 2 ) to be exact – the two buildings feature

466,500 ft 2 (43,340 m 2 ) of flexible and functional

space for your program. Multiple events can take

place simultaneously, each with their own separate

access and function spaces. The centre offers

311,500 ft 2 (28,940 m 2 ) of exhibition space,

72 meeting rooms in various sizes, open terraces

and an additional 150,000 ft 2 (13,900 m 2 ) of

pre-function space that provides stunning views and

unique environments for your event. Just imagine

your informal meeting, registration or networking

reception in an open space with windows and views

that are second to none.

The anchor, or centrepiece, of all this

wondrous space is Canada’s largest waterfront

ballroom. At 53,000 ft 2 (4,920 m 2 ), approximately

3,000 guests can dine in its full configuration, or more

than 6,000 can be arranged in a theatre set-up. Floorto-ceiling

glass and soaring ceilings create a sense

of grandeur; not something you’d normally expect

from a convention centre. But then, this is no ordinary

convention centre.

list features the finest selection of British Columbia’s

When it comes to convention centres, we

are leading the way with the fastest connection and

technology offerings of any other facility. All of your

technology requirements are already here, on-site

and as part of our infrastructure. In fact, we had the

capacity to accommodate the complex needs of the

world media when our facility served as the Main

Media Centre for the Vancouver 2010 Olympic and

Paralympic Winter Games. More than 150 digital signs

and additional stand-alone internet kiosks support

booth advertising, product showcases and event

news. We feature more than 7,000 network ports,

satellite uplinks, real-time video transmission, Wi-Fi

and high speed internet with a bandwidth capacity

of up to 1 GB per second to keep you connected. Our

on-site team of experts will make sure even your

most complex technology requirements are well

The Vancouver Convention Centre is in the

centre of it all and your delegates will be thrilled

Everything’s accessible at the Vancouver

Convention Centre. Conveniently located downtown,

you’ll find more than 13,000 quality hotel rooms

within easy walking distance and three connecting

hotel properties. The Vancouver International Airport

(the second largest on North America’s west coast)

is less than 30 minutes away. And getting downtown

is as easy as taking a taxi, a limo or riding the Canada

Line rapid transit system.

The nearby mountains, forest and ocean

offer a wide range of recreational activities, from

golfing and sailing to heli-skiing and mountain biking.

And Vancouver’s comfortable climate with mild

winters (average temperature of 41°F or 5°C) and

warm summers (just over 68°F or 20°C) makes it a

But why stop there? With the convention

centre and Vancouver as home base, delegates

are well-positioned to explore this unique region.

Seaplanes, helicopters, ferries and cruise ships sit

mere moments away. All of which make it easy to

discover attractions like Victoria – British Columbia’s

capital – and the scenic Gulf Islands. Take a short

drive up the Sea-to-Sky Highway to the world-class

resort of Whistler. Sample the award-winning

vintages of the Okanagan wine country, or travel the

Alaskan coastline and the Rocky Mountains. Any of

these experiences could help turn an unforgettable

event into an unforgettable adventure.

1. Our living roof, the largest in Canada,

is inspired by the ecosystem of British

Columbia’s coastal grassland.

mussels, barnacles and kelp, which

in turn encourage and nourish local

sea life.

Vancouver sits on the doorstep of nature.

So we designed our West building with nature

in mind, and as a result, it has received LEED ®

(Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design)

Platinum certification. We are the first convention

centre in the world to earn the highest LEED ® rating.

We used floor-to-ceiling glass to take advantage of

the setting’s natural beauty and maximize natural

light. Delegates can enjoy incredible views of the

North Shore Mountains, the harbour and Stanley Park

from either their function space or on their journey

through the building. We used natural design

elements as much as possible. Local wood and

glass are featured throughout.

The facility is as green as it gets,

incorporating environmentally sustainable features

into every inch of the structure. So, if your goal is to

have a sustainable event, we have the perfect setting

to make it happen. We’ve even successfully hosted

Vancouver’s first audited zero-waste event.

The West building runs on a seawater

heating and cooling system with an on-site water

treatment plant. The building utilizes natural

ventilation and the latest technology to maximize

energy efficiency. In fact, the Vancouver Convention

Centre aims to be carbon neutral in 2010.

The six-acre (2.4 hectare) living roof collects

rainwater to nourish a variety of over 400,000

indigenous plants and grasses growing there. Bees

from the four resident beehives help keep these

plants flourishing and provide honey for our ‘scratch’

kitchen. Below the centre, a pillared foundation

encourages a thriving marine habitat.

In addition, beauty is not restricted to views

outside. The centre hosts a thematic art program

featuring a diverse selection of artwork inside and

outside the facility. So you see, everything we do is

designed to leave delegates a little more enlightened

and the world a little better off.
