NEWSS President
Hyatt Regency at Penn’s
Landing
The 66 th Annual Meeting held in Philadelphia, PA at the Hyatt Regency
at Penn’s Landing, January 3-6, 2012 was very successful. Attendance was
184, higher than the past two years and, within the average of the
previous five years. We are all much indebted to our Past President, Mark
VanGessel, who simply did a masterful job in securing a different hotel
for our meeting once we learned that renovations to our scheduled hotel
would not be completed in time just one week and a half prior to the
start of our annual meeting. Thank you, Mark! Once the hotel situation
had been settled the meeting was well coordinated between the
Executive Committee and the new hotel and the accommodations were
great. Again, this year we met jointly with the Northeastern section of
the American Society of Horticultural Science (NE-ASHS) who actively
participated in the General Sessions and workshops. The theme of the
meeting was “Weed Science Funding: New Avenues for a Changing
Landscape” and included invited speakers Dr. Bruce McPherson (Dean,
College of Agricultural Sciences, Penn State Univ.), Dr. Thomas Morris
(Associate Professor of Soil Science, Univ. of Connecticut and Regional
Coordinator of the Professional Development Program, Northeast
Sustainable Agriculture and Research and Education (NE-SARE) Grant
program), Dr. John Lydon, (USDA, ARS, Office of National Programs,
and National Program Leader for Weed Science), and Dr. Lee Van
Wychen, (Science Policy Director for National and Regional Weed
Science Societies). We had two excellent workshops, one coordinated by
Drs. Richard Smith (UNH) and Matthew Ryan (Penn State) titled
“Moving Beyond Rotating Modes of Action: Advancing the Concept and
Application of Integrated Weed Management”. The second symposium –
was a mini-symposium organized by Art Gover and was held within the
Vegetation Management and Restoration section of the meeting and
focused on our current understanding of the distribution, ecology, and
management (e.g. chemical and biological) of the invasive swallow-wort
(Vincetoxicum spp.) vines which are continuing to expand their range
especially in the northeastern U.S. and southeastern Canada. Once again
this year, Renee Keese did a fantastic job of coordinating the Dessert
Social. I would like to take this opportunity to thank everyone who
helped out with the annual meeting as a section chair, judge, moderator,
committee member or in any capacity. During the business meeting,
outgoing President Mark
VanGessel passed the gavel to
incoming President Toni
DiTommaso. The EC would like
to thank those members who have
served and rotated off the board
in January 2012: Barbara Scott,
Public Relations; and Hilary
Sandler, Past-President. We truly
appreciate all of their time and
hard work on behalf of the
NEWSS. New members include
Javier Vargas, Public Relations;
and Greg Armel as Vice President.
We also welcome Erin Hitchner as
our incoming Treasurer who will
work closely with our current
Treasurer Melissa Bravo during
the coming year, prior to assuming
full responsibility for the position.
At the 2012 annual meeting, the
NEWSS membership also
approved the splitting of the
Treasurer and Secretary positions,
the latter of which will be
renamed the “Membership Chair”
position. Details on the specific
responsibilities for each position
are currently being finalized by
the Executive Committee. Once
completed, we hope to fill this
new position as soon as possible,
so let us know if you would be
interested in serving our society in
this capacity. A complete list of
current committee assignments
(names, phone numbers, and
email) can be found on the
NEWSS web site at
www.newss.org/society.php
At the 2012 annual meeting, the
membership also voted to adopt a
new logo for our society. Design
and color refinements are being
finalized before the official
introduction of the logo in the
coming months. We thank Hilary
Sandler for all her work to
coordinate the selection of the
new logo. In 2011, the Weed
Science Contest was held as a
“WeedOlympics” and hosted by
the University of Tennessee in
Knoxville with teams from across
the United States and Canada
participating. The contest was a
great success and extremely well
attended. Our thanks again go out
to Greg Armel, Jim Brosnan, Tom
Mueller and the entire group at
UT for hosting a great collegiate
weed contest. The 2012 Contest
will again come back to the
northeast region and will be held
on July 24 at Rutgers University's
Snyder Research Farm located in
Pittstown, NJ. It should be a
great event and we thank John
Grande and his colleagues for
their willingness to host our
Contest. The next NEWSS annual
meeting will be held as a joint
meeting with the Weed Science
Society of America (WSSA) in
DWIGHT LINGENFELTER
NEWSS President-Elect
2013 Annual Meeting Update
As we plan for our special 2013 joint Annual Meeting with the Weed
Science Society of America (WSSA) in Baltimore, MD, I want to provide
an update. It will be located at the Hilton Baltimore on February 4 – 7,
2013. Since it will be a joint meeting, we will not have our typical meeting
during the early January timeframe. There will be one registration fee for
both societies and it is estimated that the hotel rooms will be $197/night.
Although most of our topical sessions fit nicely into the WSSA
framework, I am working with the WSSA meeting coordinators to allow
specific sessions that are designated for NEWSS functions such as our
graduate student paper section, business and committee meetings, and
Past President’s breakfast. One note about the student oral paper session,
since we are limited by the scheduling format, it appears there only will be
enough time for a maximum of 20 students to compete in the judged paper contest. We are still working out
the details but if there are additional student papers, we encourage them to be included in the judged poster
session or simply presented during one of the standard breakout sessions. We will provide more information
on this as we get closer to the event. If there are other unique sessions that must be maintained for this
meeting or questions in general about the meeting, feel free to contact me. In addition, we are always in
need of and welcome ideas and insights for workshops and symposia. If you have any topics of interest,
please let me know (dwight@psu.edu or 814-865-2242) or complete the “call for symposia” proposal form
that is announced in the WSSA April newsletter and posted on their website. We hope this joint meeting
will provide an opportunity to those who have not attended a WSSA meeting as well as help to reduce
expenses for those who typically attend both meetings. On another note, the NEWSS committee lists and
assignments for 2012 are being posted on our website. As a reminder, the WSSA section chairs will be
responsible for coordination the sessions at the joint meeting. If you are an NEWSS section chair/chairelect
your duties will be deferred until 2014. Thanks to all who make our society a success.
JACOB BARNEY
WSSA Representative
The 52st annual meeting of the WSSA took place in Kona, Hawaii (The Big
Island) at the beautiful Hilton Resort. Despite the location, or perhaps
because of it, attendance at the poster session, and some of the paper sessions
was low, though overall meeting attendance was good. The schedule for this
meeting was slightly modified, which may have resulted in low session
attendance. I am sure it had nothing to do with the ocean being right outside
the door. Several NEWSS members were recognized at the awards ceremony,
which was followed by a “Polynesian Spectacular”. Jeff Derr (Virginia Tech)
was awarded WSSA Fellow, the highest honor given by the society. Shawn
Askew (Virginia Tech) was awarded the Outstanding Early Career Weed
Scientist Award for his accomplishments, and Prasanta Bhowmik (UMASS)
was awarded the Outstanding Research Award for his achievements. NEWSS
continues to be well represented at the WSSA awards, but I would encourage NEWSS members to
continue nominating our deserving members for awards at WSSA. The next WSSA meeting will be held
jointly with NEWSS in Baltimore February 4-7. Despite the joint meeting we will still have the graduate
student paper and poster contest, and a few other traditional NEWSS events. Details forthcoming.
! The 2014 WSSA meeting will also be a joint meeting, with the Canadian Weed Science
Society, in Vancouver, British Columbia February 3-6.
! Lastly, check out the WSSA website (www.wssa.net) for frequent press releases related to
weed science, and soon the website itself will be getting an overhaul.
JOHN WILLIS
Research and Education Representative
For the 2012 annual meeting in Philadelphia, the NEWSS offered pesticide
recertification credits for all states willing to offer credits for the content of
our meeting. For 2012 recertification credits were offered for 14 states and
the Agronomy Society Certified Crop Advisor Program (CCA) for the mid-
Atlantic region. Grand totals for by state pesticide license recertification
were 115 and 14 for CCA recertification. The top three states requesting
recertification credits were Pennsylvania (35), New York (24), and Maryland
(17), while Connecticut, Delaware, Maine, North Carolina, New Jersey,
Virginia, Vermont, and West Virginia also had recertification credits issued.
Of the 115 recertification credits, 62 recertification credits were issued for
the following Sessions: Vegetation Management and Restoration, Turf, and
Agronomy. We did have several non-members that registered for single days
in order to participate in the recertification. I would like to thank Russ Hahn for his key role in attaining
recertification credits for New York. Please stay in touch if there are additional recertification credits that
could be utilized by our membership.
Herbicide-resistant Weeds Threaten Soil Conservation Gains:
Finding a Balance for Soil and Farm Sustainability, February
2012
Herbicides were developed during the twentieth century to be used
with conventional tillage for weed control. Conservation (or
minimum) tillage subsequently evolved, which enabled less soil
damage when used with herbicides. Selection pressure, however, has
resulted in weed species that have made adaptations for survival in conjunction with tillage. The U.S.
government has put several federal policies and programs in place that help determine the selection and
implementation of crops and conservation programs in relation to herbicides and tillage. This Issue Paper
examines the impact of certain weed management practices on soil conservation objectives and addresses
ways to mitigate negative effects. Chair: David R. Shaw, Office of Research and Economic Development,
Mississippi State University, Mississippi State.
Assessing the Health of Streams in Agricultural Landscapes: The Impacts of Land Management Change
on Water Quality, March 2012
The Clean Water Act of 1987 states that the elimination of pollutant discharge into navigable water is a
national goal. Agriculture has been identified repeatedly as a significant contributor of nonpoint source
pollution to surface waters. Despite conservation efforts, water quality problems still exist; all agricultural
states struggle with balancing productive landscapes and water quality. Legislation, potential regulations, or
allocations of millions of dollars to change agricultural practices seem warranted only if we know stream
water is favorably impacted by modified agricultural practices, and in which streams the greatest potential
impact might be observed.
ADAM SMITH
Graduate Student Representative
Greetings graduate students. Thank you for making our annual
meeting in Philadelphia a success. The student paper and poster
presentations were exciting and presented a great diversity of
interesting research. Congratulations to all the winners. Next year’s
annual meeting with be a joint meeting with WSSA, and the WSSA
graduate student president and I will soon be in the process of
planning events for you. Any suggestions are welcome.
As always, we will have our NEWSS Collegiate Weed Science Contest
Sustaining Membership Report
For 2012, we have 19 sustaining members. This is a decrease of 4
sustaining members and a reduction of $2,750 in support
compared to 2011. Total support amounts to $14,500 of which
$4,500 is allocated to support the annual weed contest.
On behalf of the NEWSS, I would like to personally thank these
19 organizations for their contributions for 2012. These
contributions are critical to the financial health of the society and
I invite other companies and organizations to consider becoming
a sustaining member today!
All membership levels receive a copy of the proceedings and an
exhibit table and recognition at the Annual Meeting and in
Newsletters. The tiered fee structure provides benefits such as
complementary conference registration(s), company link on the
NEWSS website, etc., depending on the level of support.
Platinum and Gold Sustaining members automatically make a contribution to the collegiate weed
contest. Silver and Bronze members are encouraged to make a separate donation for the collegiate weed
competition. If you are interested in becoming a sustaining member or would like to contribute to the 2012
weed contest, please contact John O’Barr (john.obarr@basf.com, 717-386-8259).
JOSE JAVIER VARGAS
NEWSS Public Relations
Dear NEWSS members,
I would like to introduce myself as your current Public
Relations Coordinator for the North Eastern Weed Science
Society. My name is José Javier Vargas Almodóvar (Javi), I am
honored to have been given this opportunity and am eager to
start working with the NEWSS executive board, students and
society members.
As most of you know I currently work at the University of
Tennessee in Knoxville, TN under the tutelage of Dr. Gregory
R. Armel in the Horticultural and Invasive Weed Management
program. The program has exposed me to multiple experiences
and perspectives which have helped me learn how to best meet
the needs and duties of research, but also provided me with a
professional development to interact with students, staff, and
weed science colleagues. My particular weed science research interests have spanned both applied and basic
research in the understanding of herbicide physiology and new integrated pest management strategies for control
of invasive weeds and in novel weed management in vegetables, tree fruit, small fruit, ornamentals, and in noncrop
areas.
Throughout the years I've been a participant in several weed science societies; however, it was here at the
NEWSS where I will trace my weed science roots.
I would like to thank Barbara Scott for all the help she has provided me to understand my duties as Public
