There has never

been a better

time to travel

With a strong Canadian dollar and some

record-low travel prices, there truly has

never been a better time to travel than

Fewer crowds: Visiting many of the world’s great

destinations and attractions is normally something

of a double-edged sword. While most hot spots have

very good reasons for their popularity, the jostling

crowds of fellow travellers can often detract from the

experience. Now is a fantastic time to visit many “mustsee”

destinations like Orlando, London and New York,

without the normally attendant crowds. The added bonus

is that the locals who depend on tourism — and who are

typically overwhelmed by the annual crush of tourists —

will be less harried. They’ll have more time to chat, service

will likely be better and they’ll be all the more grateful for

your patronage.

Stronger dollar: A very strong Canadian dollar has not

only made US travel more attractive, but less expensive,

too. The Euro, British Pound and American Dollar are

currently trading at very favourable exchange rates.

Greater value: A stronger dollar isn’t the only economic

incentive to travel today. Many travel providers are

currently enticing consumers with a host of special

programs and promotions to increase value and bring in

business. However, as we move out of the recession, travel

providers will begin to move away from discounting and

return to more “traditional” pricing. The travel deals of

2009 and 2010 will likely not extend into the future, and

now is the time to do that family vacation you’ve always

dreamt of. Cruises, Disney, tour operators, hotels, etc… are

all offering great deals and incentives now, but we don’t

expect it will last.

Stress relief: Finally, and ironically, the very thing that

has prompted people to forgo travel is one of the key

things that also argues in favour of taking a vacation now

—stress. A nice, relaxing escape offers a welcome respite

and a chance for the family to spend time together.

Cruising offers a

convenient, good-value

vacation By

It’s no wonder the travelling

public says cruise vacations are

an outstanding value.

For just one price, a typical

cruise includes accommodations,

meals, snacks, entertainment,

use of recreational and other

ship facilities, along with the

opportunity to sail from one

destination to another —

sometimes six in the course of a

week’s cruise. And…what’s more

convenient that getting on your

ship and unpacking just once?

For those who have done fly,

drive or all inclusive vacations,

cruising offers a unique alternative.

Here are a few of my tips for firsttime

The price of your cruise is based

primarily on your chosen level of

accommodations, your itinerary and

the time of year you chose to travel.

Pat Rotz, Vice President – Travel & Auto Club

CAA Niagara

Most ships offer a wide choice of

inside and ocean view staterooms,

staterooms with balconies and

Cruises come in every length,

from three days to three months.

If budget is a high priority, pick a

shorter cruise from a closer cruise

port and consider driving to the

port instead of flying.

Travel during the off-season or

“non-holiday” periods or before/

after major holidays to take

advantage of substantial savings. By

picking an “off season” destination

— Alaska, in May, for example —

you can often save money and

enjoy the same excitement and

pleasure of an Alaskan cruise in the

summer. A New Year’s Eve cruise

is a great time to travel, but by

going the week after New Year’s Eve

the cost of your cruise can be cut

Cruises are an ideal choice

for families, extended families,

and friends who want to share

a memorable vacation. Because

cruise lines offer activities just right

for every generation, consider

bringing the extended family and

creating your own group of cruisers.

Most cruise lines reward you for

booking multiple staterooms.

CAA Niagara has cruise specialists at

all five branches who can help you

determine the cruise that’s right for

your unique vacation needs.

2010 Hosted Cruises

When you book a CAA-hosted cruise

we’ll handle all of the little things so

that you can travel worry-free. A host

will be with you from the minute you

leave to the minute you arrive back in

Canada. They’ll get you to the airport,

onto the ship, to and from your hotel

and be there to answer any questions

you may have along the way. It’s the

convenient and hassle-free way to see

some of the world’s best destinations.

The family that plays together…

Who among us doesn’t have great childhood

memories of summer vacations with their family?

Why not make new memories for your family by

taking a drive vacation this summer? It’s easy,

affordable and fun.

“Drive vacations are a great way to maximize your

family time and explore some historic, beautiful and

famous destinations within a day’s drive of Niagara,” says

CAA’s Travel Product Manager, Lisa Boardman. “You can

set your own pace; stop as frequently as you want and

even wander the road less travelled.”

“Through CAA’s Exclusive Getaways, our Travel

Consultants have a variety of “one-day-away” drive

vacations that we think you and your family will enjoy,”

Lisa said. “We can organize the major components,

like accommodations and attractions tickets, then you

personalize it with family favourites.”

Lisa’s personal suggestions are:

Philadelphia, the birthplace of American independence,

has something for everyone. For history fans, definite

“must-sees” are the Liberty Bell and Independence Hall’s

Assembly Room, where America’s Founding Fathers wrote

the Declaration of Independence. Film buffs and athletes,

be sure to visit the Philadelphia Museum of Art and do

your best Rocky impression on the Museum’s iconic stairs.

Montreal, dubbed one of the world’s most livable

cities, is renowned for its relaxed French atmosphere

and its abundant history. The cobblestone streets of Old

Montréal are lined with stone houses, Paris-like cafés,

and architectural beauties like the 18th-century Pointe

à Callière (Museum of Archeology & History). The city’s

downtown boasts a trove of churches and some fine

museums focusing on art, history and architecture.

Washington D.C.

Washington D.C. is a sophisticated, family-friendly

city full of historical landmarks. No tour is complete

without checking out the Capitol Building, Washington

Monument, Lincoln Memorial and the Arlington National

Cemetery. And for those travelling on a budget, you

can explore Washington’s majestic monuments and

the renowned Smithsonian Museums... for free. All this

combined with excellent hotels and award-winning

restaurants make for an unforgettable vacation.

Let CAA Niagara Travel Help

The Most Out Of Your Next

As the last blasts of winter give

way to the first days of spring the

thoughts of many families finally

turn toward warmer weather and

planning a summer vacation.

The good news is that there are

popular, proven family travel

options that actually require little

to no planning. Here are three

options to consider that take care

of much of the planning for you:

All-inclusive resorts

All-inclusive resorts don’t require

extensive planning, as the resort typically

provides your accommodations, meals,

drinks, nightly entertainment and a

variety of activities and water sports.

Many all-inclusive resorts have invested

heavily in “kids clubs” designed specifically

for toddlers, tweens and teens, giving

parents ample time to relax and enjoy

the resorts amenities. However, guests

are usually free to leave the property and

explore the local culture at their leisure.

Most all-inclusive resorts also include

airfare, transfers and gratuities, virtually

eliminating additional expenses. With

a variety of free on-site amenities and a

more relaxed pace, all-inclusive resorts are

ideal for the family looking to unwind.

Cruise packages

Modern cruise ships are basically floating

resorts, offering superb dining, “kids-only,”

“tweens” and “teen facilities” and exciting onboard

entertainment. However, with numerous

ports of call and available shore excursions,

cruises typically provide a more diverse and

exciting experience than all-inclusive resorts.

Most cruises stop at a different port each day,

allowing you to absorb a variety of new

and unique cultures and visit several

countries throughout your vacation.

For the restless family, waking up

in a different port each day is a

fun way to travel and keep

the kids entertained. Shore

excursions are a great

way to experience

the unique culture

of each country you

visit. Shore excursions

come at a variety of

price points, and can

range from historical tours

to adventure sports to

culinary courses. Every shore

excursion has been tested

and inspected by the cruise

line, guaranteeing you a safe

and enjoyable experience. In

addition, most shore excursions

include transportation to and

from the ship, making them even

more convenient and hassle-free.

Escorted Family Tours

Arranging transportation and accommodations, planning activities

to please different age groups and keeping everything under budget

are just some of the challenges families can face when trying to plan

their summer retreat. Fortunately, tour operators are stepping up and

designing escorted tours with families in mind, and the options they

present are guaranteed to tempt any traveller.

for under $200

The price of the tour typically includes flights, hotels, most

meals, attraction tickets and transportation. Sometimes all

that’s left to budget for are the “wish you were here” postcards.

Family members are guaranteed a comfortable room to sleep

in each night, and picky eaters will be grateful for a little

flexibility in their meals. Most importantly, parents won’t have

to worry about navigating unfamiliar roads.

One of the trickier aspects of the family vacation is planning

activities and sightseeing trips that appeal to children and

adults alike. Modern parents like their children to have the

most enriching, educational experiences possible, but kids

can only tolerate so many historical, ‘look-but-don’t-touch’

exhibits. Quality tour operators balance

this element with interactive, imaginative

and often playful activities — a day or two

watching animals at a national park, rafting

down a river, visiting a medieval castle or eating real

Italian pizza or gelato. With the chance to burn a little energy

and enjoy hands-on experiences, children are more likely to

have a positive impression of the trip, which keeps the adults

happy as well.

As an added benefit, tour operators can often offer

discounted air when you make your flight arrangements

through them instead of on your own. Other money-saving

ideas to consider are group discounts for larger families and

reduced rates for young travellers.

• No medical declaration required up to age 59

• Children may travel separately

Have You Thought About

Las Vegas?

If your family is looking for a different

kind of vacation, consider taking a trip

to the Las Vegas Strip. Las Vegas is more

than casinos; it’s full of outstanding food,

award-winning shows and stunning

Lois Sarkisian, Manager, CAA Niagara

Siegfried & Roy’s Secret Garden and

Dolphin Habitat. You’ll come face to face

with white lions, white tigers, panthers,

leopards and a family of Atlantic

Bottlenose Dolphins. You never know

what you’ll see walking around Las Vegas,

so take the afternoon to people watch.

Check out the Venetian Living Statues

and other entertainment in the Venetian’s

Grand Canal Shoppes, or stroll through

the Forum Shops at Caesar’s Palace.

At night, check out one of Las Vegas’

Broadway-beating shows. The Beatles

Love by Cirque du Soleil® at the Mirage,

Blue Man Group at the Venetian are just

two of Vegas’ spectacular shows. In fact,

Las Vegas has seven unique Cirque du

Soleil shows. Finally, end your day with

a visit to the Bellagio and their famous

dancing fountains.
