THE MARYLAND HUMANITIES COUNCIL
Opening Eyes.
Opening Ears.
Opening Minds.
2007/2008 BIENNIAL REPORT

Letter from MHC Board Chair, Barbara A. Hill
Creating the Annual Report provides an opportunity to reflect on what the Maryland Humanities Council (MHC)
has accomplished recently—to think about whom we have served and how what we do makes a difference in
the lives of Marylanders.
In this time of economic distress and uncertainties, the question of the “need” for the humanities arises as
people struggle financially. But nothing is more basic than the need to make sense of that which occurs around
us. The humanities give us the tools to understand and discuss what is happening to our families, our
communities, and our nation. So we proudly look back at recent past accomplishments and look forward to
continuing our work in the future, knowing that MHC is making a difference in the lives of thousands of
Marylanders all across the state.
During 2007 and 2008, MHC rolled out its Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.: Remembrance and Reconciliation special
initiative, bringing conversations about race relations to communities across Maryland. For this initiative, MHC
received the prestigious national Schwartz Prize for excellence in humanities programming. We also
inaugurated One Maryland One Book, the state’s first statewide reading and discussion program. We said
goodbye to Executive Director Peggy Burke and welcomed new Executive Director Phoebe Stein Davis. We
expanded our fundraising goals as we expanded our program offerings and are delighted with the list of
organizations that partnered with us on programs. We want to thank the many individuals, corporations,
foundations, and government agencies that support our efforts.
We are confident that Marylanders value our work and directly benefit from our efforts to stimulate conversations
about ideas and issues. These difficult times provide us with an opportunity to return to the most basic of human
needs—understanding our place in the world as the world changes around us.
Sincerely,
Barbara A. Hill, Chair
Maryland Humanities Council

The Maryland Humanities Council
Opening Eyes.
Opening Ears.
Opening Minds.
The Maryland Humanities Council brings people
and communities together, promoting
conversations about important issues. We
encourage Marylanders with different
backgrounds and viewpoints to see, hear, and
learn more about others and themselves. We
believe that only informed, engaged citizens can
build healthy, democratic societies.
Technology continues to change the way we live,
work, and communicate with each other. The
Maryland Humanities Council creates
opportunities for face-to-face, human interaction
that make it possible for us to understand and
accept one another.
The Maryland Humanities Council uses the
humanities as tools for exploring critical issues
and themes. The humanities include literature,
history, philosophy, archeology, language,
comparative religion, jurisprudence, ethics, art
history, and aspects of the social sciences.
The humanities explore the human experience.
Through the humanities we think about who we
are—our ideas, our histories, our literature, and
our values—and how we relate to one another.
The humanities foster understanding and improve
our ability to interact amicably and meaningfully.
DR. MARTIN LUTHER KING, JR: REMEMBRANCE AND RECONCILIATION
Special Initiative
MHC’s special initiative, Dr. Martin Luther King,
Jr.: Remembrance and Reconciliation, has
encouraged thousands of Marylanders to
participate in humanities-centered activities and
conversations that examine how issues of race
affect our lives and communities.
Inaugurated in September 2007, this multifaceted,
two-year special initiative—which has been
incorporated into most MHC programs—
commemorates the life and legacy of Dr. King on
the 40th anniversary of his assassination. We are
very proud that the initiative received the
prestigious national Schwartz Prize for excellence
in humanities programming.
The living history conversation
Martin and Malcolm:
One Vision — Two
Voices traveled to Baltimore,
Cumberland, Hagerstown,
Easton, and Westminster and
stimulated community
dialogue about race relations.
Hundreds of Marylanders attended
a free performance by acclaimed
actress and playwright Anna
Deavere Smith of her one-woman
show Snapshots: Glimpses
of America in Change.
Poet Nikki Giovanni
DR. MARTIN LUTHER KING, JR: REMEMBRANCE AND RECONCILIATION
Program Highlights
Community Conversations: Trained facilitators led
discussions about race relations based on an essay,
sermon, speech, short story, poem, or film.
Chautauqua: MHC’s annual Chautauqua program joined
Rosa Parks and George Wallace with Dr. King and
Malcolm X for four evenings of discussion about civil rights.
Grants: Numerous MHC grants were awarded for
developing programs that used the humanities to spark
conversation about race relations, including the University
of Baltimore conference “’68 Baltimore: Riots and Rebirth,”
the WYPR series The Fire Last Time, and the Howard
County Poetry and Literature Society’s “Racism in America”
panel discussion.
Speakers Bureau: Scholars knowledgeable about the
legacy of Dr. King, the Civil Rights Movement, and current
issues centering on race relations were added to MHC’s
Speakers Bureau roster.
One Maryland One Book: Participants discussed the
issues of race raised in Ron Suskind’s A Hope in the
Unseen, the true story of Cedric Jennings’ climb from the
inner city to the Ivy League.
Initiative Programs for Kids
One Maryland One Book involved 3,500
high school students in reading and discussing A
Hope in the Unseen. The book’s subject, Cedric
Jennings, shared his inspirational story.
Community Conversations about race
relations were held at several high schools.
MHC’s partnership with the Maryland State
Department of Education for the Dr. Martin Luther
King, Jr.: Remembrance and Reconciliation
special initiative led to 85 elementary, middle and
high school students submitting artwork based on
Dr. King’s Six Principles of Nonviolence to a
juried art show.
Over 1,000 elementary, middle,
