The scenic Marinette County Forests and
Parks have been developed, in large part, to
provide a quiet, relaxing environment for
the general public. We know the value of a
piece of land cannot be measured solely by
the economic income generated. The
majority of people who use and appreciate
the Marinette County forests derive no
monetary gain from it. We are indebted to
many people who worked hard to establish
and develop our county forest.
I
f you enjoy hunting, then a great adventure
is in store for you! Marinette County has
thousands of acres of public hunting land. The
area is home to white-tailed deer, black bear,
Marinette County has one of the largest deer
populations in the state. Bow and rifle seasons
are offered in the fall. With two deer hunting
seasons in the county, you have ample time to
shoot your trophy buck.
Every farmer that seeks abatement and claims
for damage caused by Whitetail deer through
the WDACP must allow hunting for Whitetail
deer on their enrolled property. This same rule
applies to claims made for damages caused by
bears, wild turkeys, and geese.
Turkey hunting in both spring and fall is
becoming more popular. Walk along forest roads
and fire lanes to find the best locations for
grouse, or head to the southern part of the
county to find pheasant near the farm areas.
Coleman
Coleman is a peaceful village that was mainly settled after the famous Peshtigo Fire of
1871. By 1882, the railroad was being laid through the area which helped the settlers reach
markets and lumber businesses. As the railroad grew, so did the village. In 1903, the Village
of Coleman was incorporated with just over 560 residents all living within one square mile.
Once the village was incorporated, it grew quickly. By 1909, a major highway (US Highway
141), passed through town, which made transportation around the area easier. Within no
time Coleman had its own theater, general store, funeral home, lumber company, service
station, and many other businesses offering services to the settlers.
Pound
N
amed in honor of Thaddeus Coleman Pound (1833 -1914), Pound, Wisconsin is the
sister village to Coleman. Thaddeus was a Wisconsin state politician who was the
grandfather of the great poet Ezra Pound. Growing together as two separate communities
bound by a common goal, the communities of Coleman and Pound have joined in planning
their annual events to make this area a hotspot for outdoor events. Firemen’s picnics,
winterfests and hog wrestling are just a few of the fun events held in this area each year.
The outdoor recreation that Marinette County is known for begins here with excellent
ATV trails and routes.
F
Crivitz
rederick J. Bartels founded Crivitz in 1883. He was a businessman who named the village
after his hometown of Crivitz, Germany. Centralized in Marinette County, Crivitz is 250
square miles of all season vacation land and waters and offers something special to those
who visit this area. We have whitewater rafting and kayaking on the upper stretch of the
Peshtigo River, the best in the Midwest.
The Village of Crivitz, with its own airport, has grown over the decades to accommodate
those who love to live, shop and play in a small town setting. Today, Crivitz has become
known as the recreational hub of Marinette County. Lake Noquebay, in the eastern part
of the Crivitz area off of Hwy GG, is a lakeshore community lined with beautiful homes
and resorts. Lake Noquebay County Park provides 2,400 acres of recreation with
swimming, picnicking, boating and water ski shows.
Niagara
Niagara, meaning “thundering waters” to the Iroquois Indians, is a fitting name for the
northernmost city in Marinette County. Nestled within the bluffs of the Menominee River,
Niagara overlooks some of the most demanding whitewater in the Upper Midwest. Niagara
combines outdoor recreation and industry to offer the economic support that makes this
area appealing. The parks are also the location for many of the community events held in
Niagara each year, like the Annual Lions Community Picnic at Heights Park.
Hiking, biking, cross-country skiing, snowmobiling, ATVing and golf are also popular
activities in this part of the county. If you are interested in extreme sports, you are only a
short drive from our forest canopy zip-line tour which provides stunning views of both
Michigan’s Upper Peninsula and Wisconsin as you zip down the lines 30-40 feet above the
ground. Whitewater rafting down Pier’s Gorge will definitely get your adrenaline pumping.
Pembine / Beecher
round the year 1887, the Soo Line Railroad was completed. It intersected the Milwaukee
Road Railroad at a location where a logging community had sprung up. This intersection
became known as the Town of Pembine. Since the 1900s this area has become known for
it’s outdoor recreation. Pembine, named after the Peme Bon Won River, sits along the
Menominee River as the town’s eastern most border. The north and south branches of the
Pike River, K.C. Creek and the Peme Bon Won (a.k.a the Pemenee) also cross through the
area providing top notch trout fishing. Deer, grouse, turkey, bear and rabbit are in great
quantity for trophy hunting. If motorized sports are what you desire, the expanded year
round ATV trail system offers hundreds of miles of connected trails for your riding pleasure.
With golf being another popular activity in the area, one never has to wonder about what
there is to do.
Peshtigo
In 1871 America’s most devastating fire swept through the Peshtigo area, killing over 1200
people. Rising from the ashes, today people know Peshtigo for its numerous outdoor and
recreational opportunities. Nearly every type of business, office and shop can be found
in or around the City of Peshtigo. Peshtigo has seen many new faces in recent years as
people realize the value of pride, devotion and hard work, and the direct effect these
attributes have on a community.
From the Peshtigo River and all that it offers, to a multitude of parks, campgrounds, and
seasonal activities across the region, the Peshtigo area has something for everyone's
recreational desires. Located in the center of Peshtigo is Badger Park, a multi-use 57-acre
park and campground with a band shell, forest walking trails and two pavilions. Peshtigo
has grown to be one of the most aggressive small communities in Northeast Wisconsin.
Porterfield
n 1887, Porterfield was separated from Peshtigo and Marinette to create the town which
was named after a local farmer and businessman, John Porterfield. Porterfield is a quiet
little town about six miles west of Marinette. Quiet, that is, during 11 months of the year.
Made famous for the Porterfield Country Music Festival, the town becomes a booming
mecca for campers and country music enthusiasts each June. The 10-day festival celebrates
the heritage of country music from the classics to modern country-pop. Featuring some
Wausaukee / Silver Cliff
he Village of Wausaukee is a lovely, “folkart” community full of fun in every season.
It is located within a major resort area featuring a wide variety of outdoor recreation
opportunities including hunting, fishing, snowmobiling, rafting, biking, cross country
skiing, swimming and off-roading. It is also near some of the county’s favorite parks
and waterfalls. Public and private hunting lands are located throughout Wausaukee
and delicious down-home cooking. Plentiful lakes and streams make this the
gateway to fine fishing country. The area has perfect locations for exciting
pastimes like whitewater rafting, boating, and snowmobiling.
Silver Cliff is the extreme water-sport hot
spot of Marinette County. Located in
western Marinette County, this area is
well known for the “Roaring Rapids”
section of the Peshtigo River. This
section, at about 5 miles in length, is the
IV rapids, rafting and kayaking
enthusiasts travel from all over the world
to test their skill on this powerful flow.
F
arnsworth and his Native American common law-wife,
referred to as Queen Marinette whom the city is said to
have taken its name, operated the trading business from
the log post for several years. Farnsworth associated
with Charles Brush in a business venture, which marked
the beginning of a new industry that would dominate the
Menominee River Basin for the next fifty years. In 1832,
the partners erected a water-powered sawmill at the
foot of today's North Raymond Street.
A second sawmill was constructed on the river in 1841, which was followed by several
more in the next few years. In 1856, the New York Lumber Company built a steampowered
sawmill at Menekaunee, now Marinette's east end. As lumbering prospered,
so did Marinette. In 1853, the population was 478; by 1860 the number of people in
the growing community had reached 3,059.
Isaac Stephenson arrived in Marinette in 1858, when he
purchased a quarter interest in the North Ludington Lumber
Company sawmill. Stephenson became a town supervisor,
county board chairman, justice of the peace, member of the
state legislature, a U.S. Senator, publisher of the Milwaukee
Free Press, instigated the construction of the Sturgeon Bay
Ship Canal, and owned iron mines in Michigan's Upper
Peninsula. He donated the Stephenson Public Library to the
city, built the Stephenson Block, the Lauerman Brothers
Company Department Store, and founded the Stephenson
National Bank.
Marinette was incorporated in 1887, and by
1900, was the tenth largest city in Wisconsin.
It had a new courthouse, city hall, opera
house, two hospitals, a street railway, more
than a dozen hotels and boarding houses,
thirty saloons, and major industries, including
the Marinette Iron Works, Marinette Flour
Mill, the A.W. Stevens farm implement
company, and the M & M Paper Company.
