We would urge <strong>Shell</strong> to re-evaluate its membership of these trade associations, and issue public statements separating itself from their positions on climate policy. Similar actions have been seen recently – with Unilever leaving BusinessEurope, and BP exiting ALEC – as companies become increasingly concerned by the negative effect that continued affiliation will have on their reputation. Such moves would reassure shareholders of the consistency of your policy position on climate change. They would also be valuable in providing a counter-balance to the unhelpful positions that these associations have historically taken on climate and energy polices. These associations gain legitimacy by being able to say that they speak on behalf of major industry players like <strong>Shell</strong>. Your withdrawal would help undermine this claim.
