LNG Carriers<br />
LNG carriers, like oil tankers, are not permitted to<br />
immobilize their propulsi<strong>on</strong> machinery while in port<br />
and port areas. Hence, redundancy <str<strong>on</strong>g>is</str<strong>on</strong>g> required.<br />
For the steam ship, redundancy <str<strong>on</strong>g>is</str<strong>on</strong>g> c<strong>on</strong>sidered<br />
fulfilled by having two boilers, whereas no redundancy<br />
<str<strong>on</strong>g>is</str<strong>on</strong>g> required for the single steam turbine,<br />
propeller shaft and propeller.<br />
For diesel engines, which require more maintenance<br />
<strong>on</strong> a routine bas<str<strong>on</strong>g>is</str<strong>on</strong>g> than steam turbines, either<br />
a multi�engine c<strong>on</strong>figurati<strong>on</strong> or an alternative<br />
propulsi<strong>on</strong> power supply possibility for a single<br />
engine c<strong>on</strong>figurati<strong>on</strong> <str<strong>on</strong>g>is</str<strong>on</strong>g> required.<br />
Shuttle tankers in the North Sea are equipped<br />
with twin low speed engines and twin propellers.<br />
<str<strong>on</strong>g>Th<str<strong>on</strong>g>is</str<strong>on</strong>g></str<strong>on</strong>g> ensured that approximately half of the propulsi<strong>on</strong><br />
power always <str<strong>on</strong>g>is</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>available</str<strong>on</strong>g>, and that <strong>on</strong>e<br />
of the diesel engines can be maintained without<br />
immobil<str<strong>on</strong>g>is</str<strong>on</strong>g>ing the vessel or comprom<str<strong>on</strong>g>is</str<strong>on</strong>g>ing safety. A<br />
similar soluti<strong>on</strong> or alternatively a single diesel engine<br />
with a shaft electrical motor will fulfil requirements<br />
c<strong>on</strong>cerning mobilati<strong>on</strong> for LNG cerriers.<br />
The Internati<strong>on</strong>al Associati<strong>on</strong> of (marine) Classificati<strong>on</strong><br />
Societies’ (IACS) redundancy c<strong>on</strong>siderati<strong>on</strong>s<br />

in Fig. 7.08.01, compr<str<strong>on</strong>g>is</str<strong>on</strong>g>ing <strong>on</strong>e reliquefacti<strong>on</strong> unit,<br />
<strong>on</strong>e high pressure compressor and <strong>on</strong>e oxidizer,<br />
will comply with redundancy requirements and<br />
offer full fuel flexibility.<br />
