Dear Campers<br />

Welcome to another exciting summer at <strong>Dovercourt</strong>! Every year we add new<br />

specialty programs and creative themes to provide campers with exciting and<br />

unique opportunities. <strong>Dovercourt</strong> offers the most amazing variety of <strong>Summer</strong><br />

<strong>Day</strong> Camp programs in the Ottawa area, providing lots to choose from for<br />

campers of every age.<br />

Some exciting new additions to this year’s camps include white water rafting<br />

with Ottawa City Adventures, Little Aces badminton and tennis, and a full line<br />

up of creative programs in partnership with the Bluesfest School of Music and<br />

Art. For <strong>2015</strong> we are also excited about continuing to expand our most popular<br />

programs for youth and teens including our Youth Zone day and overnight,<br />

Leader-in-Training and Counselor-in-Training programs.<br />

Each year we value our partnerships with other organizations and professionals<br />

in the community and are thrilled to be working with a number of them<br />

including Young Rembrandts, Radical Science, the Cowguys, Eric Leclerc, Ian<br />

Dudley, Little Ray’s Reptile’s, Parmar Soccer, Rogers TV, Advantage Boating, and<br />

many more.<br />

We look forward to seeing you this summer. If you are new to <strong>Dovercourt</strong> camps,<br />

happy to help you select camps to suit your child’s interests and to address<br />

Camp Swim Times<br />

swimming each day, so please<br />

refer to your camp’s newsletter for<br />

specific swim days.<br />

Please note that our indoor pool is<br />

closed from August 31 for annual<br />

maintenance. Some camps will make<br />

use of our wading pools during the<br />

last week of camp.<br />

Extended Care<br />

Need extended day care? Pre<br />

and Post camp is available for all<br />

campers each week.<br />

$42/week. Pre-camp starts at<br />

7:30am and post-camp runs until<br />

6:00pm.<br />

Fee includes both pre and post<br />

camp as well as a post camp snack<br />

provided to all campers at 5:00pm.<br />

Specialty <strong>Camps</strong><br />

With almost forty different programs to choose from, specialty camps are designed so that campers<br />

can try something new and develop their talents in a fun and friendly environment. Camp programs<br />

include at least three hours of focused instruction each day, which is balanced with a variety of<br />

traditional camp games, activities, crafts and swimming. Browse the descriptions of each camp and<br />

then refer to the chart on page 20 to see when each program is offered for your child’s age group.<br />

artists and designers will benefit from<br />

specialized instruction from local<br />

together to prepare a live theatre<br />

Developed and directed by some of<br />

the best high school music teachers<br />

in Ottawa, this specialized program<br />

offers campers an opportunity to<br />

learn something new or to improve<br />

on their favourite instrument. This<br />

program includes lots of practice time<br />

in small groups and as a large group<br />

in Nepean High School’s music room,<br />

a recording session, and a concert in<br />

the auditorium on Friday for family and<br />

friends.<br />

Band Camp in Barrhaven<br />

Due to popular demand we are<br />

bringing Band Camp to Barrhaven!<br />

Each week features a trip to Nepean<br />

High School’s music room for a<br />

recording session and joint concert as<br />

one large band, and a Friday concert<br />

for family and friends.<br />

We offer three levels of Band<br />

Camp:<br />

Absolute Beginners 9-12 yrs –<br />

no experience necessary. Choose one<br />

week or stay for both weeks for just<br />

an additional $200. Available at both<br />

locations.<br />

Level 1 10-14 yrs – for students who<br />

have completed a full year of a band<br />

program in school. Available at both<br />

locations.<br />

Level 2 10-15 yrs – for students<br />

who have completed two full years<br />

of a band program and are playing<br />

at least a level 200 or 300. *please<br />

note that level 2 is offered only at the<br />

Music & Art (BSOMA)<br />

The Bluesfest School of Music & Art<br />

offers young artists a chance to<br />

learn from industry professionals<br />

and specialists. Campers will develop<br />

technical and musical skills; define their<br />

image; and build confidence for their<br />

big gig!<br />

Each day starts and ends at <strong>Dovercourt</strong><br />

while most activities take place at<br />

BSOMA, just a short walk from<br />

<strong>Dovercourt</strong>.<br />

Beats & Bass DJ: Learn the ins and<br />

outs of DJ equipment, programs,<br />

beat-matching, mixing and the basics of<br />

scratching. Learn tricks of the trade like<br />

how to organize your music collection<br />

and how to market yourself for your first<br />

live gig. Campers will showcase their<br />

new skills at the RBC Bluesfest.<br />

June 29-July 3, July 6-10 & July 13-17<br />

Tech: Learn about what goes into<br />

producing a successful live music show<br />

from behind the scenes, including<br />

sound-mixing, lighting and instrument<br />

maintenance. This camp is fun for<br />

musicians as well as those who’d prefer<br />

to work outside of the spotlight. Includes<br />

a trip to a professional recording studio.<br />

July 20-24<br />

Rock U: Band coaches will work with<br />

current and potential band mates to<br />

prepare for a performance at the Ottawa<br />

Folk Festival. Bands will define their<br />

style, refine their talent and build stage<br />

confidence. Band mates will reunite in<br />

early September for a dress rehearsal<br />

in advance of their performance at the<br />

Ottawa Folk Festival. Campers must<br />

have basic abilities to play an instrument<br />

or sing.<br />

Active Start<br />

This multi-sport camp is designed and<br />

lead by <strong>Dovercourt</strong> counselors who<br />

are experienced in school and club<br />

sports with an emphasis on teaching<br />

the ABC’s of sport: Agility, Balance<br />

and Coordination. The Canadian Sport<br />

for Life (CS4L) model emphasizes<br />

the importance of children learning a<br />

variety of different sports at a young<br />

age, year-round, both in the water<br />

and on land, and indoors as well as<br />

outdoors. With a focus on participation<br />

and fun, campers will learn a variety<br />

of different sports including soccer,<br />

basketball, flag football, swimming,<br />

frisbee, volleyball and more.<br />

Swimming<br />

The perfect camp for kids who can’t<br />

get enough of the water. With at least<br />

half of the day spent in the pool with<br />

a certified instructor and lifeguard,<br />

you’ll work on swim strokes, learn<br />

faster, and of course play lots of your<br />

favourite water games. All campers<br />

must be able to swim a minimum of<br />

5m unassisted and be comfortable in<br />

and around the water.<br />

Sport Fishing with<br />

Fishing Just 4 Kids<br />

Spend the week in some of Ottawa’s<br />

best fishing locations with Captain Yan,<br />

an expert instructor. Learn the basics<br />

of fishing, casting, knot tying, fish<br />

habitats and more. Includes your very<br />

own rod and tackle box to take home<br />

and keep so that you can continue<br />

practicing your skills all summer long.<br />

Sailing<br />

In partnership with Advantage Boating,<br />

enjoy a full week on the Ottawa river<br />

in a Sonar 23ft sailboat with an expert<br />

instructor. Learn the basics of keelboat<br />

sailing by practicing knots, rigging,<br />

de-rigging, anchoring and helming.<br />

Take your turn as the skipper while<br />

under motor in and out of the harbor,<br />

Lifeguarding<br />

Based on the Life Saving Society’s<br />

Junior Lifeguard Club program, this<br />

one week course will be sure to<br />

test your strength and endurance,<br />

leadership and teamwork skills. If<br />

you love the water and are looking<br />

for something different than swim<br />

lessons then this is the program for<br />

you. Participants will receive their own<br />

team uniform as well as a “waterlog”<br />

to record personal achievements<br />

throughout the week.<br />

Skateboard<br />

Spend the week with expert coaches<br />

learning everything from the basics<br />

of the board to advanced techniques<br />

and tricks with a safe, fun and<br />

individualized approach. As a group,<br />

you’ll embrace the skateboarding<br />

culture and perfect your riding skills<br />

at local skateboard parks and on<br />

the ramps and pathways around<br />

<strong>Dovercourt</strong>. All levels of skill are<br />

welcome. Skateboard, helmet, knee<br />

pads, elbow pads and wrist guards are<br />

mandatory.<br />

Basketball<br />

Developed by Laura Bond, coach of<br />

Algonquin College and Team Ontario,<br />

this program offers quality instruction<br />

run by professional coaches and<br />

varsity athletes. Each camper receives<br />

Paddleboarding<br />

Spend some time on the water and<br />

learn the basics of SUP (standup<br />

paddleboarding). You’ll practice<br />

balance and coordination while<br />

learning how to maneuver the board.<br />

Acrobatic Rope Jumping with<br />

Ottawa Acro-Ropers<br />

Acrobatic rope jumping originates in<br />

Japan, and this program combines<br />

skills of coordination, concentration<br />

and flexibility in a fun, non-competitive<br />

environment. In partnership with<br />

founder Bill Chong and the Ottawa Acro-<br />

Ropers you’ll learn the basics of this<br />

exciting sport, then show off your skills<br />

at the end of the week for your family<br />

Access MMA<br />

Let’s get ready to rumble at Access<br />

MMA! Spend a week in the gym learning<br />

self-defense techniques and multiple<br />

trained and certified instructors. We’ll<br />

mix up the technical training with<br />

fitness games and outdoor play.<br />

coaches focusing on developing the<br />

technical and tactical skills of soccer.<br />

Learn the basics from some of the best<br />

Learn basic skills including backhand,<br />

forehand and serving, then practice in<br />

preparation for a singles and doubles<br />

For those who love biking all summer<br />

long. Learn everything from bike<br />

maintenance and fine tuning to roadsharing<br />

and then hit the road for the day.<br />

This series of camps features<br />

full days of rescue training<br />

from professionals in the<br />

community with lots of<br />

hands-on, up-close exposure<br />

to the most interesting<br />

vehicles and equipment used<br />

in the field.<br />

Junior Rookies<br />

Geared toward our youngest trainees,<br />

this program offers an up-close look at<br />

what it takes to become a police officer,<br />

firefighter or paramedic all in one week.<br />

Includes training simulations, visits<br />

from real rescue professionals, and a<br />

trip to a local fire hall. Sit in the driver’s<br />

seat of police cruisers, fire trucks, and<br />

ambulances as you see first-hand the<br />

tools and techniques used in real life<br />

<strong>Dovercourt</strong> has teamed with MacSkimming Outdoor<br />

Education <strong>Centre</strong> to offer up an all new<br />

three day/two night Youth Zone<br />

Overnight program.<br />

We’ve combined the best of <strong>Dovercourt</strong> programming with the forests,<br />

fields, waterfront and rustic buildings of MacSkimming to build what<br />

we think will be our best overnight program ever.<br />

Owned and operated by the Ottawa-Carleton District School Board,<br />

MacSkimming’s 400 acres of play-space includes waterfront access,<br />

a pioneer village, an orchard and lots of forest trails and camp fire pits<br />

to provide all the opportunity for <strong>Dovercourt</strong> adventure in the outdoors<br />

that a camper could ask for. The program is perfect for both first-time<br />

and returning overnight campers to explore personal attitudes and<br />

challenge personal limits.<br />

and a performance evaluation to take<br />

home. Time spent volunteering may<br />

also be counted toward the high school<br />

requirements for community volunteer<br />
