Dear Campers
Welcome to another exciting summer at Dovercourt! Every year we add new
specialty programs and creative themes to provide campers with exciting and
unique opportunities. Dovercourt offers the most amazing variety of Summer
Day Camp programs in the Ottawa area, providing lots to choose from for
campers of every age.
Some exciting new additions to this year’s camps include white water rafting
with Ottawa City Adventures, Little Aces badminton and tennis, and a full line
up of creative programs in partnership with the Bluesfest School of Music and
Art. For 2015 we are also excited about continuing to expand our most popular
programs for youth and teens including our Youth Zone day and overnight,
Leader-in-Training and Counselor-in-Training programs.
Each year we value our partnerships with other organizations and professionals
in the community and are thrilled to be working with a number of them
including Young Rembrandts, Radical Science, the Cowguys, Eric Leclerc, Ian
Dudley, Little Ray’s Reptile’s, Parmar Soccer, Rogers TV, Advantage Boating, and
many more.
We look forward to seeing you this summer. If you are new to Dovercourt camps,
please feel free to come and visit us in person or give us a call. We are always
happy to help you select camps to suit your child’s interests and to address
any questions or concerns you may have. Be sure to download your copy of our

Camp Swim Times
Camp swims are incorporated into

$42/week. Pre-camp starts at
7:30am and post-camp runs until
6:00pm.
Fee includes both pre and post
camp as well as a post camp snack
provided to all campers at 5:00pm.

Swim
Camp Swim Times

2015 day camps – summer made fun 1
Specialty Camps
With almost forty different programs to choose from, specialty camps are designed so that campers
can try something new and develop their talents in a fun and friendly environment. Camp programs
include at least three hours of focused instruction each day, which is balanced with a variety of
traditional camp games, activities, crafts and swimming. Browse the descriptions of each camp and
then refer to the chart on page 20 to see when each program is offered for your child’s age group.

Art & Design
Art camp provides a unique
opportunity to try different types of
art in a fun and creative way. Young
artists and designers will benefit from
specialized instruction from local
experts, exciting workshops, and by
using their imagination and creativity
with our talented staff. Family and
friends are invited to a special art
show on Friday, where young artists
will show what they’ve been working
on all week.

just one week, turn a pile of mud into a
glazed work of art. Finished pieces are
glazed, fired and ready to pick up just
a few weeks after camp, to bring home
for display.

Spice up your summer and become
a restaurateur in just one week.
Developed and directed by a
professional chef and restaurant owner,
campers will learn all about what it
takes to run a restaurant, including
learning traditional recipes and creating
some of their own. Parents are invited
to come for a taste on Friday, where
campers take on the role of executive
chef and server to show off their
signature dishes.

Circus
Spend a week with Nick Miller, one of
the CowGuys, and learn everything
you need to know to become a
professional circus performer. Unleash
your inner clown as you practice
techniques and prop manipulation with
juggling, unicycling, stilt walking, rolo
bolo, and more.

Spend the week with one of our
talented dance instructors learning
all the latest moves in jazz, ballet,
contemporary and hip hop. Become
an artist and choreographer as
you create and learn new routines
in preparation for the big recital

Drama
A program designed for stage stars
and anyone interested in learning
about the theatre. Learn lead and
supporting roles and all about set
and costume design. Days are spent
with our talented and dramatic staff

Singing
Join the show choir for a week and
work on harmony, pitch and tone. Add
in some show-stopping solos, duets
and choreography and you’ll dazzle

Friday concert.

Band
Developed and directed by some of
the best high school music teachers
in Ottawa, this specialized program
offers campers an opportunity to
learn something new or to improve
on their favourite instrument. This
program includes lots of practice time
in small groups and as a large group
in Nepean High School’s music room,
a recording session, and a concert in
the auditorium on Friday for family and
friends.
Band Camp in Barrhaven
Due to popular demand we are
bringing Band Camp to Barrhaven!
Each week features a trip to Nepean
High School’s music room for a
recording session and joint concert as
one large band, and a Friday concert
for family and friends.
We offer three levels of Band
Camp:
Absolute Beginners 9-12 yrs –
no experience necessary. Choose one
week or stay for both weeks for just
an additional $200. Available at both
locations.
Level 1 10-14 yrs – for students who
have completed a full year of a band
program in school. Available at both
locations.
Level 2 10-15 yrs – for students
who have completed two full years
of a band program and are playing
at least a level 200 or 300. *please
note that level 2 is offered only at the
Dovercourt location.

Bluesfest School of
Music & Art (BSOMA)
The Bluesfest School of Music & Art
offers young artists a chance to
learn from industry professionals
and specialists. Campers will develop
technical and musical skills; define their
image; and build confidence for their
big gig!
Each day starts and ends at Dovercourt
while most activities take place at
BSOMA, just a short walk from
Dovercourt.

Beats & Bass DJ: Learn the ins and
outs of DJ equipment, programs,
beat-matching, mixing and the basics of
scratching. Learn tricks of the trade like
how to organize your music collection
and how to market yourself for your first
live gig. Campers will showcase their
new skills at the RBC Bluesfest.
June 29-July 3, July 6-10 & July 13-17
Tech: Learn about what goes into
producing a successful live music show
from behind the scenes, including
sound-mixing, lighting and instrument
maintenance. This camp is fun for
musicians as well as those who’d prefer
to work outside of the spotlight. Includes
a trip to a professional recording studio.
July 20-24
Rock U: Band coaches will work with
current and potential band mates to
prepare for a performance at the Ottawa
Folk Festival. Bands will define their
style, refine their talent and build stage
confidence. Band mates will reunite in
early September for a dress rehearsal
in advance of their performance at the
Ottawa Folk Festival. Campers must
have basic abilities to play an instrument
or sing.

Active Start
This multi-sport camp is designed and
lead by Dovercourt counselors who
are experienced in school and club
sports with an emphasis on teaching
the ABC’s of sport: Agility, Balance
and Coordination. The Canadian Sport
for Life (CS4L) model emphasizes
the importance of children learning a
variety of different sports at a young
age, year-round, both in the water
and on land, and indoors as well as
outdoors. With a focus on participation
and fun, campers will learn a variety
of different sports including soccer,
basketball, flag football, swimming,
frisbee, volleyball and more.

Swimming
The perfect camp for kids who can’t
get enough of the water. With at least
half of the day spent in the pool with
a certified instructor and lifeguard,
you’ll work on swim strokes, learn
new techniques to go farther and
faster, and of course play lots of your
favourite water games. All campers
must be able to swim a minimum of
5m unassisted and be comfortable in
and around the water.

Sport Fishing with
Fishing Just 4 Kids
Spend the week in some of Ottawa’s
best fishing locations with Captain Yan,
an expert instructor. Learn the basics
of fishing, casting, knot tying, fish
habitats and more. Includes your very
own rod and tackle box to take home
and keep so that you can continue
practicing your skills all summer long.

Sailing
In partnership with Advantage Boating,
enjoy a full week on the Ottawa river
in a Sonar 23ft sailboat with an expert
instructor. Learn the basics of keelboat

Lifeguarding
Based on the Life Saving Society’s
Junior Lifeguard Club program, this
one week course will be sure to
test your strength and endurance,
leadership and teamwork skills. If
you love the water and are looking
for something different than swim
lessons then this is the program for
you. Participants will receive their own
team uniform as well as a “waterlog”
to record personal achievements
throughout the week.

Skateboard
Spend the week with expert coaches
learning everything from the basics
of the board to advanced techniques
and tricks with a safe, fun and
individualized approach. As a group,
you’ll embrace the skateboarding
culture and perfect your riding skills
at local skateboard parks and on

Dovercourt. All levels of skill are
welcome. Skateboard, helmet, knee
pads, elbow pads and wrist guards are

Developed by Laura Bond, coach of
Algonquin College and Team Ontario,
this program offers quality instruction
run by professional coaches and
varsity athletes. Each camper receives

Spend some time on the water and

paddleboarding). You’ll practice
balance and coordination while
learning how to maneuver the board.

Acrobatic Rope Jumping with
Ottawa Acro-Ropers
Acrobatic rope jumping originates in
Japan, and this program combines
skills of coordination, concentration
and flexibility in a fun, non-competitive

Ropers you’ll learn the basics of this
exciting sport, then show off your skills
at the end of the week for your family
and friends.

Access MMA
Let’s get ready to rumble at Access
MMA! Spend a week in the gym learning
self-defense techniques and multiple
forms of martial arts including boxing,

fitness games and outdoor play.

This high performance program is
designed to help soccer players

Little Aces is a Tennis Canada

Learn basic skills including backhand,
forehand and serving, then practice in

Academy
A camp filled with
excitement and
education, 911 Rescue
Academy offers
campers activities
focused on the
adventure and
training required
to become a police
officer, paramedic
and/or firefighter.
This series of camps features
full days of rescue training
from professionals in the
community with lots of
hands-on, up-close exposure
to the most interesting
vehicles and equipment used
in the field.

Junior Rookies
Geared toward our youngest trainees,
this program offers an up-close look at
what it takes to become a police officer,
firefighter or paramedic all in one week.
Includes training simulations, visits
from real rescue professionals, and a
trip to a local fire hall. Sit in the driver’s
seat of police cruisers, fire trucks, and
ambulances as you see first-hand the
tools and techniques used in real life
emergency situations.

You’ll be recruited to the force this
week for specialized police and

physical fitness challenges, training in

Firefighter Academy
Join the fire department for a week
and learn the basics of operations, fire

the river by raft and kayak while learning about moving water
and river ecology. Wilderness Tours is world renowned when
it comes to water safety and instruction and this program is
developed and delivered by highly trained and experienced
whitewater professionals.

Photography
Learn about lights, shadows and
colour while practicing basic digital
photography techniques with

Rogers TV and Dovercourt are working
together again to offer this exclusive,
hands-on program where participants
receive a week of training in all
aspects of television production from
industry professionals. Spend a full
week immersed and involved in the
activities of Ottawa’s local community
TV station. Spend days in the studio
and in the community, learning about
lighting, shooting, editing and oncamera
reporting. Apprentices will apply
everything they’ve learned to produce
a live TV show, broadcast on Friday on
Rogers TV Ottawa, Cable 22.

innovative full-week program for future
pilots. Participants of the Flying Club
will spend a week exploring the world of

Dovercourt has teamed with MacSkimming Outdoor
Education Centre to offer up an all new
three day/two night Youth Zone
Overnight program.
We’ve combined the best of Dovercourt programming with the forests,
fields, waterfront and rustic buildings of MacSkimming to build what
we think will be our best overnight program ever.
Owned and operated by the Ottawa-Carleton District School Board,
MacSkimming’s 400 acres of play-space includes waterfront access,
a pioneer village, an orchard and lots of forest trails and camp fire pits
to provide all the opportunity for Dovercourt adventure in the outdoors
that a camper could ask for. The program is perfect for both first-time
and returning overnight campers to explore personal attitudes and
challenge personal limits.

Monday will be spent on-site at
Dovercourt learning camping basics
and getting to know fellow campers.

run from 11:30am until 4:30pm, with
optional extended care until 5:30pm

Leaders-in-Training

This two week intensive program is
designed to prepare you to become
leaders in your school and in your
community. The goal of this program
is to equip young people with the skills
required for facing the demands of
life and leadership by testing their
personal limits. Attitudes and ways of
thinking will be challenged and leaders
will be exposed to dynamic and fun
team-building experiences. The LIT
directors believe that all young people
can be leaders and this program
focuses on helping you discover
your potential and your leadership
strengths. Developed and directed
by high school teachers and youth
leadership specialists, this program
includes a 3 day overnight camping trip
at MacSkimming Outdoor Education
Centre and a variety of unique
community programming experiences.

this program will gain
job-specific training
that will give them
a head start to a

Components of this program include

Crisis Prevention and Intervention
(NVCPI curriculum), behavior
management, and program design
and delivery. During this program,
CITs will work directly with campers
and staff and practice their skills
during in-camp placements with close
supervision, daily mentoring/feedback
and the opportunity to debrief and
discuss their learning and experience
with peers. CITs are encouraged
to continue to practice their skills
while volunteering in programs and
those who successfully complete the
program will receive an offer to work
in Dovercourt programs during the
school year.

Volunteering in
Summer Camps
Participants who have completed the
LIT and CIT programs are invited to
volunteer for one or two weeks during
the remainder of the summer, or the
following summer. Volunteers will
receive feedback from camp directors
and a performance evaluation to take
home. Time spent volunteering may

requirements for community volunteer
