GL Homes Project Manager
We are pleased to announce that on
Saturday, March 21st, Frankie Avalon,
former teen idol, will perform in the
Grand Ballroom.
One of the more talented members
of the
“Philadelphia School” of rockn-rollers,
Frankie Avalon was the
reigning teen singing idol from 1958
through 1960. Devotees of American
Bandstand will relive affectionate
memories of such Avalon top-ten hits as
“Gingerbread” and “Venus.”
GL Homes will host an evening of
entertainment along with hors d’oeuvres,
beer and wine. Cocktail attire is requested.
Tickets for residents will be distributed via
a lottery system. More details regarding
the lottery will follow via e-mail. We are
encouraging all residents to carpool to
the event.
FRANKIE AVALON
HEROES REIGN AT VALENCIA LAKES
By Jay Solow
While playing golf on Friday, December 12th, 2008, at Buck Horn
Springs Golf Club in Valrico, some of our residents proved what
wonderful people live here at Valencia Lakes. On the seventh hole,
after teeing off, Jim Smith and I turned around and realized that
Dick Haczinsky and Bob DiPentima were nowhere to be found.
Jim noticed their golf cart was in the tree line. Not knowing what
had happened, Jim and I raced down the fairway to the empty golf
cart where we saw smoke emanating from one of the homes. Jim
immediately called 911. Bob and Dick noticed the smoke as they left
the tee. Without hesitation or concern for their own safety, they ran
into the home and discovered a very shaken and scared woman. The
kitchen was the source, as Bob ran out of the house with a frying pan
that was ablaze and still dripping flaming grease. Dick began to rip the
fiery curtains from the wall and extinguish the remainder
of the fire. The house was filled with smoke, but they
managed to put the fire out, saving the woman’s
home and quite possibly her life. I am very proud
of my Valencia buddies. They can’t play golf very
well, but they sure are great people.

EDITOR’S COMMENTARY
by Joy Rosen
“CAMP WIMAUMA”
Some time ago I was reflecting on our new experience
living here at Valencia Lakes and, in doing so, I came
to a startling conclusion. It occurred to me that living
the Valencia Lakes lifestyle is really the equivalent of
going to a sleep-away camp. For those of you who are
unfamiliar with the term “sleep-away camp”, that was
a place usually in the countryside where teenagers
would be sent by their parents to spend a few weeks
to live each summer, engaging in all kinds of activities
with other kids under the watchful supervision of camp
counselors. Valencia Lakes to me is very much the same
thing, except that the camp experience exists here for us
all on a year-round basis. Like a camp, we have swimming pools,
athletic fields, exercise equipment, golf courses, ceramics and art
classes, games of all kinds, and group trips to interesting places
around the area. Just look at our monthly calendars, chock full of
all kinds of varied activities. We even have Marshall and Corry to
serve as our camp counselors.
As in summer camp, the experience for each individual very much
depends on what each individual puts into it. For those who prefer
to live a more contemplative life, they can do their own thing. For
others who enjoy group activities, there are many activities to join in
with fellow campers to have shared experiences. “Camp Wimauma”
is a place for all of us to enjoy and to treasure.
YOUR HELP IS NEEDED
Food Drive
Underway
The community will be collecting food for the Food Pantry.
There will be a box at the front door of the clubhouse and
residents are invited to contribute as much as they can. This
will be an ongoing project of the Woman’s Club of Valencia
Lakes. All food items should be either canned goods or
boxed. No glass, please!
Our Property Manager
It has become necessary to review some rules and regulations regarding our properties:
• Pets should not be left unattended outside the home. No pet should be kept tied up outside or in any covered or screened porch or
lanai unless there is someone present inside the home.
• All dogs should be walked on a leash and be under full control of their owners at all times. It is the law in Hillsborough County.
• Please refer to your homeowner’s documents for a complete list of rules and regulations regarding animals and pets.
• If a homeowner decides to rent his house, he/she must notify the POA and provide the Association with a copy of the executed
lease. The contents of the lease must comply with the rules and regulations regarding leasing.
• The Pool Codes state children of diaper age and those not toilet trained shall not be permitted in the pools.
• Parking is permitted only on driveways and inside garages. No parking on the streets, swales or vacant lots is permitted.
• No overnight parking of boats or commercial vehicles is allowed unless inside the garage with the garage door closed.
• As of January 1, 2009, homeowners will need to purchase and install mulch at their own expense. GL Homes has been installing
mulch as a courtesy and, due to increased costs and additional expenses, they can no longer extend this courtesy.
MIKE & KAY LAUGHLIN
Mike and Kay moved to Valencia Lakes from Miami. Mike had
seen the new development while visiting his mother in Sun City
Center, and liked it so much he told Kay she had to come and
see it. And that was it! They closed on their home here in April,
2007, and have been happy they did ever since. They have two
children, a daughter who lives in Orlando with Mike and Kay’s
only granddaughter, Ava; and their son, who is a 2nd lieutenant
in the USMC. Before retiring, Kay was a special education
teacher. Mike was a police lieutenant for Miami-Dade. Mike
and Kay both love to travel. Since moving to Valencia Lakes,
they’ve been very busy with the activities here. They’ll try almost
anything to see if they like it. Mike is co-chair of the Welcome
Committee. He’s in the photography club, on the softball team,
and plays poker. Kay is on the activities committee, plays Mah
Jongg, and is taking art classes. Both are learning to play golf,
ballroom dance an enjoy kayaking.
INSIDE SCOOP ON CLUBS
VALENCIA LAKE WOMEN’S CLUB
By Sandie Papa
The first meeting of the Valencia Lakes Women’s Club had a large
turnout and was a huge success. The Mission Statement was read,
officers were elected and committees were formed. The objective is
for the ladies in our community to engage in charitable campaigns,
volunteering and social functions such as luncheons and trips. Elected
officers are Sandie Papa, chairperson; Pat Bush, Vice-Chairperson;
Patty Hipsher, Treasurer; and Kay Laughlin, Secretary.
We are hoping more women turn out for our monthly Saturday
meetings. Our goal is for every Valencia Lakes woman resident to
become a member. Thanks to all participants. With everyone’s help,
we will be a huge success in our community.
The Valencia Lakes Singles Club meets on the second Tuesday
in addition to our monthly social/meeting.
If you are single and have not yet come to play with us, please
consider it. In December, we celebrated with a Holiday Brunch
VALENCIA LAKES PROGRAM GUIDE
NOTES FROM THE LIFESTYLE OFFICE
Things have been hopping at the Clubhouse. In January and
February we saw the start of many great programs, from the
Valencia Mixer to the Mardi Gras Ball and much more. February
kicked off our first show series with “Legends of Doo Wop”. Just in
time for Valentine’s Day we rolled out our first round of Spa Services
with our Massage packages. If you haven’t already had one or want
more, give us a call and we’ll be happy to sign you up.
So as we move into spring, prepare for more as our show series
continues and don’t forget our Grand Opening Event starring
former teen idol Frankie Avalon.
We are constantly rolling out new programs and improving
those already in place. Please make sure you read about all the
activities as there may have been changes from the previous
month. Attendance has been phenomenal and we encourage
everyone to register for all social activities and events, including
those that are free. It is however not necessary to register for
things listed in the club section of the program guide.
As always, we are committed to work with the community on
an ongoing effort to create, co-ordinate and implement the best
programs and activities for you. All of your feedback is invaluable
to us and your ideas for programs are always welcome. Together
we all create the energy and inspiration that is Valencia Lakes.
Wedding Bells Ring for Patty and Henry Juda
By Pat Kelly
On January 17, 2009, Patty Meyers and Henry Juda were joined in
matrimony at St. Anne’s Church. Although they had lived in the same
neighborhood, Apollo Beach, and attended the same church several years
earlier, they had never met until they moved to Valencia Lakes. Patty
and Henry met very briefly at one of the Drinks in the Driveway events,
but didn’t see each other again for awhile. Then at a Sock Hop here at
Valencia Lakes, Sandie Papa asked Patty, a widow for five years, if she
would mind talking with a gentleman who recently lost his wife. Henry,
who was taking dance lessons, was sitting with two dance instructors. s.
He asked Patty to dance and they seemed to “hit-it-off.” Henry’s dance
instructors suggested that he get to know Patty and invite her to be his
partner for dance lessons. And as they say, the rest is history. Prior to
retiring, Patty ran a small steel factory and Henry was an engineer. They
both like to dance. He bowls and she plays bridge. Patty’s family lives
locally. Henry’s family all live in the Northeast.
Sandie Papa attended the wedding and exclaimed, “Patty was
a beautiful bride in her exquisite lace dress and the groom looked
smashing in his tuxedo.” The ceremony was breathtaking. The reception
was held at Cypress Creek Country Club. We wish these two wonderful
people much health and happiness.
