Thirty residents came to cheer on their fellow neighbors at our first Cardboard
Boat Regatta! Gary Spieler teamed up with Abbie Israel to race against Peggy and
Larry Kleven. Andy Pfeiffer led the crowd, singing the National Anthem, just like
they do at the America’s Cup. The image of this race being compared to America’s
Cup brought on such a fit of laughter that some people forgot the words to the
National Anthem!
Abbie and Gary’s boat was red and beige and named the USS Minnow. They donned
striped outfits to complement their boat. Peggy and Larry’s boat was red and sleek
and christened #7.
The whistle blew and the race
began. When the first person got
in his boat, our first surprise was
that the boat actually floated. So far
so good! However, as the second
person climbed aboard, both boats
capsized! Therefore, for the race to
finish, the rules had to be changed.
One person could stay in the boat,
while the other pushed.
The USS Minnow won the race finishing in four minutes and 39 seconds. The
#7 came in second, finishing in five minutes and 10 seconds. Prizes for Gary and
Abbie were a $ 50 program credit for first place and another $ 50 program credit
for best design. Peggy and Larry received a $ 25 program credit for second place.
Thanks to Jay Solow for taking pictures of this event. So much fun was had
by all that we’re expecting a big turnout for next year’s Regatta!

EDITOR’S COMMENTARY
by Joy Rosen
It is so wonderful to witness the growth of this fabulous community which has so much to offer. Marshall and Corry, along
with their Advisory Committee, have worked so hard to bring us a wide range of diverse activities with something to please
almost anyone. While people participate in some of the sports, exercise classes and social activities, very few take advantage
of the classes in the arts and the one-on-one training offered by our personal fitness trainers, Oly and Tammy.
During this time of summer doldrums, why not try something new? I was reluctant to take the sculpture class because
I never thought I could make anything from scratch. I bit the bullet, and enrolled in Candace Knapp’s sculpture class.
What a fabulous teacher she is. With her help, I was able to create three pieces that actually look like something. The
class is very relaxing, non-threatening, and we even get to listen to classical music while working.
If you look in the display cases, you will see the artwork created by some of our residents. They cannot thank Helen
Wilson enough for eliciting their hidden ability as artists.
The training offered by our fitness experts also cannot be exceeded. An individual program is designed to fit your
need and stamina. While it can be grueling, it is not boring because the exercises are changed just as you get used to
them. Oly’s work with me has really helped change my attitude about physical fitness.
I encourage everyone to guard against complacency and to try something different. Who knows what hidden talents
you have? You’ll never know unless you try!
Editor’s Note: We need people to contribute to YOUR newsletter. Send any articles or info to joykrosen@yahoo.com.
If you have not sent me your birthday, anniversary or other special occasion, please do so. Also, please let me know of
anyone who needs to be included in “a quick recuperation” or anyone for whom condolences should be sent.
A very special thank you to those who contributed to this edition: Carolyn Averill, Pat Bush, Arlene Donnellon, Jay Solow,
Sandie Papa, Dee and Alan Simon. Joy
Love Reigns at the
Simon’s Door
A few months ago Dee and Alan Simon put up a beautiful wreath to adorn
their front door. One day, while attempting to enter their house, they noticed
a dove sitting on the wreath. Figuring the dove would soon leave, they entered
the house through the garage so as not to disturb the bird. The next day, the
dove was still perched on the wreath. Dee and Alan soon realized the dove had
made a nest in the wreath.
The Simons now had to make a decision; should
they jeopardize the nest or should they inconvenience
themselves for weeks on end by
using the garage as their point
of entry and exit? This was a
no brainer. The Simons were
inconvenienced, but were soon
rewarded. The eggs in the nest
hatched and the mama dove
showed off her beautiful babies.
Soon the babies grew enough to be
able to take flight. Dee and Alan are
to be commended for their love of all
creatures great and small.
2 VALENCIA LAKES

HAVE YOU MET?
Alphonso E. Gator (Al E. Gator for short)
The newest resident of Valencia Lakes is Mr. Alphonso E.
Gator, a handsome green scaly young lad with a long snout and
an elongated tail. His weight is unknown because of his dislike
for scales, but his length is estimated at four feet. Amazingly he
has no baby teeth, but was born with a full set of choppers. He
resides in the big lake by the clubhouse.
Corry first caught sight of him; therefore she had the honor
of naming him. In case you can’t pronounce or spell his first
name, we’ll call him Al E. Gator. Al E. Gator spends most of
his time either engaging in strenuous physical activity such as
swimming, or just lolling round. Not to worry – as long as you
don’t feed him, he is not likely to attack. In fact, alligators are
much more docile than crocodiles. Also, as soon as he reaches
five feet, he will be removed. Let’s hope he grows quickly!
VALENCIA VILLAINS HAVE
SPIRIT OF 25 YEAR OLDS
Did you know our very own Valencia Villains Softball Team is out
either playing or practicing every Saturday morning? Although faced
with some very stiff competition from the Sun City team, our Villains
have pressed on to win many games. The physical and mental competition
catapults their spirit to make them feel young again. They need your
help! Faced with the challenge of a large number of Sun City players,
the Villains need to draft more players. They practice on alternate
Saturdays at 9 am. At Baudette Park in Ruskin. How about supporting the
team by purchasing a team jersey personalized with your name on the
back? They can be purchased for $35.00 at the clubhouse. For more
info about the Valencia Villains, contact Gerry Stesiak at 633-0646.
INSIDE SCOOP ON CLUBS
COME TRAVEL WITH US
by Arlene Donnellon
All aboard the Key West Express!
On May 27-28, the Valencia
Lakes Travel Club sponsored
a trip to the historic Conch
Republic (Key West). Fifteen
people went to explore this
alluring favorite place to visitors
like Ernest Hemingway, Harry
Truman, Tennessee Williams and us.
Everyone had a great time. The fourhour
ride down and back on the Key West
Express, was smooth and relaxing. Once we arrived in Key
West, everyone enjoyed the
tour of Florida’s second oldest
Cities on the Old Town Trolley
or the Conch Train. There are
many bars and restaurants
along Duval Street, plus stores
or attractions like the Harry S.
Truman Little White House,
Key West Aquarium, Hemingway House to name a few to
visit. Key West offers many sightseeing
opportunities. The Travel
Club hopes to go back to Key
West next year to explore some
more. The club is planning future
trips. If you’re interested in travel,
please come to our Travel Club
meetings held the first Tuesday
of each month at 6 p.m. Contact
Arlene Donnellon 813-262-2559
for more details.
VALENCIA LAKES WOMEN’S CLUB
MEMBERSHIP GROWS
by Sandie Papa
Forty three members
attended the third meeting
of the Valencia Lakes
Women’s Club took place
on April 25th. Our program
included Lydia Marsh, a
wonderful speaker from
Publix, Greenwise, who gave
us plenty of information
regarding organic and
natural foods and vitamins.
The fourth meeting took
place on May 30th and
included presentation of a
calendar listing charities
for which fundraising
efforts will be made, ladies day out events, programming and
other activities. The speaker was a representative from Mass
Mutual who spoke about long term care insurance.
Part of the function of the Women’s Club is to organize the
Ladies Day Out events. Please note, while under the auspices
of the Women’s Club, Ladies Day Out events are open to all
women residents of Valencia Lakes. We are open to suggestions
from any resident. The mission of this organization is to initiate
charitable programs. Our first fundraiser was the bake sale at
the Battle of the Bands. This was a huge success and we thank
all the men and women who participated.
The club meets on the last Saturday of every month at 10:30
am in the Social Hall. We hope if you are not a member, you
will come to a meeting and see what it is all about.
SINGLES CLUB NEWS
by Carolyn Averill
The VL Singles enjoy engaging in activities that
allow us to have fun without feeling like “a third
wheel at the table.” This does not mean that we do not
also enjoy full community activities, we certainly do.
We are an active part of the VL community. It just
means we like to have the freedom of more choices
considering the fact that each of us happens to be
single at this point in our life, and that sometimes
makes us feel a little different from the couples
around us.
In the last two months, we have ventured to
Venice for shopping and out to dinner as a group. Most recently, we’ve dined at Sharky’s and at
the restaurant at Little Harbor, on the bay. Great food and fun was had by all!
July: “Oracle Bones: A Journey Through
Time in China” by Peter Hessler
A century ago, outsiders saw China as a
place where nothing ever changes. Today
the country has become one of the most
dynamic regions on earth. In Oracle Bones,
Peter Hessler explores the human side of
China’s transformation, viewing modernday
China and its growing links to the
Western world through the lives of a handful
of ordinary people. In a narrative that
gracefully moves between the ancient and the present, the East and
the West, Hessler captures the soul of a country that is undergoing a
momentous change before our eyes.
with their heartache and sorrow, discover
VALENCIA LAKES PROGRAM GUIDE
Important Safety Tip
by Pat Bush
It is always helpful to keep your medical history handy. Use
a small plastic bottle (a fat prescription bottle will do). Write
down your medical history on a small sheet of paper, place it in
the bottle and put it on the top door shelf in the freezer. Both
the emergency squad and local county rescue squads know to
look for this vial in the event of an emergency.
At a minimum the paper should include the following:
• Name, Address, Phone #, DOB
• ICE # (this is known as “In Case of Emergency”—it’s the
name(s) and number(s) of the person(s) to contact in the
event of an emergency)
• This number should also be programmed
in to your cell phone under the name
“ICE”. Emergency crews nationwide know
to look for this number on your phone.
• Allergies (especially to medications)
• Medical Conditions
• Prescriptions and Supplements
You should also carry this information
in your wallet for both yourself
and anyone else who
might rely on you in an
emergency.
Bulletin Board Tips
Residents should be aware of a feature on the Valencia Lakes
Community Internet Bulletin Board site they may have overlooked.
Once logged in to the site, on the lower left side of the screen
there is a menu choice ce
labeled “Applications.”
If you click on that t
menu item you will see e
two additional pages that
you can go to: “goods and
services available” and “where
residents are from.” The former
is a page that residents can use
to announce items or services
they wish to sell or give away and
the latter is a push-pin map allowing
residents to tell us where they are
from. Entries in the goods and
services available page will
remain for 60 days and can
be renewed for extended ended
periods as appropriate. For
additional information, contact
