WELCOME
Welcome to Sheldon, where Families Come First.
We are growing and, my friends, it’s showing! There
have been many different projects taking place in our
great city; new developments, expansions,
improvements and more!
We have welcomed the pains of growing
with a bright, optimistic look to the
exciting and promising future.
We continue to have growth in our
industrial parks with new business,
expanding business and businesses
that have relocated.
Our housing development has
increased with the addition of the
Sheldon Crossings area with over 50
Katricia
Meendering
SHELDON MAYOR
residential lots now available. We are working on an Affordable
Housing Program as we address the shortage of affordable
homes that we have come to experience. In a joint effort
with the Sheldon Community Schools, a new sports complex
is being constructed along the Highway 18 corridor, near the
middle and high school. Speaking of our community schools,
East Elementary School has recently completed a multimillion
dollar expansion to meet the growing needs they have
faced. And the list goes on…
As we continue to grow into our bright future, we are ever
cognizant and appreciative of where and how we were
founded as a city. We do our best to preserve our history while
we uphold and support what Sheldon is today! While you are
out taking a walk, stroll or ride through our city, take time
to notice some of those historic points of interest: The Train
Depot, museum, Prairie Arts Council, historic downtown,
and our city parks. Check out what is happening today: great
retail and shopping experiences, local business and industry
with commitments to bettering our city, Celebration Days
over Labor Day, RiseFest on Father’s Day weekend, and the
many family events held through the Chamber of Commerce.
For a full list of city, chamber and economic information, see
our website at sheldoniowa.com. Then help us to dream what
the future holds!
I’m proud to call Sheldon home. It’s my personal goal to
share in that excitement, taking pride in our city, volunteering,
making a difference in any way that we personally can.
Whether it is picking up that small piece of trash along your
walk, volunteering at a community/church/school event,
participating in celebrations, or shopping locally, every little
deed adds up and pulls our community together. When we
pull together we are unified! When we are unified, we are
family! (Family: a group of people unified by certain convictions
or a common affiliation).
COME JOIN OUR FAMILY, OUR CITY OF SHELDON!
2015 SHELDON COMMUNITY GUIDE 11

SCDC
Letter from Curt Strouth
Sheldon is where “Families Come
First” and we are in a very exciting
growth stage where development
around the city mirrors our motto.
We are prime for continued housing
growth with the opening of our brand
new Sheldon Crossing Residential
Development in 2014. This development
includes 57 single family housing
lots, 4.5 acres of multi-family housing
and 40 acres of park ground that
includes a recreational pond that will
be considered for future development,
as well as access to the city’s trail system.
The infrastructure for this housing
development was completed last year
and before we were even able to get
the roads to the development open, we
had sold 4 lots. Entering 2014 the SCDC
and city of Sheldon placed a high priority
in creating additional housing and
rental opportunities for our community.
In return we saw a housing boom
in terms of new single family/multifamily
rooftops in 2014. Consider this
five year comparison for new single/
multi-family rooftops: 2010-4, 2011 –
5, 2012 – 5, 2013 – 13, 2014 – 29. While
we have made considerable strides
towards fixing our housing shortage in
2014, we also understand that we have
a long way to go.
Currently we are working on implementing
our master park plan for this
development and determining what
the next course of action is for additional
amenities. We are very excited
about the future of this development
and want to be proactive in continuing
the plan that was put in place.
We are also set up nicely for industrial
development with prime development
ground available at our Sheldon Crossroads
Heavy Industrial Park. Sitting at
the crossroads of four-lane Highway
60 and Highway 18 this 70-acre development
is a prime location with high
visibility to attract new businesses and
create growth opportunities for our
existing business base. Since the opening
of this development in 2012, Ziegler
Caterpillar and White Wolf Web Printing
have called Sheldon Crossroads
their home. You will notice a flurry of
development kicking off this spring
in our Runger Light Industrial Development
Park as nine lots were sold
in 2014. We are very excited for these
development projects because of the
opportunities that they will provide to
the business owners of these projects
as well as the additional resources that
they will provide to our community.
Our new Sheldon
Sports Complex is
slated to be ready
to go by the 2015
season. This brand
new complex
will include three
baseball/softball
fields, three fullsize
football fields
that will be used
for practices and
other recreation
leagues as well as
a brand new concessions
stand and storage building.
This is a very exciting cooperative project
between the Sheldon Community
School and the city of Sheldon and will
provide our community with many
additional recreational opportunities.
We are very blessed to have partners
in this community to help us make
dreams like this come true. Projects
like this with the Sheldon Community
School are just one of a few partnerships
that have been created over the
past few years. We have also teamed up
with Northwest Iowa Community College
to provide the Lifelong Learning
Recreation Center as well as Holiday
Inn Express to provide an indoor swimming
opportunity for our community.
These relationships and partnerships
are very important for both current
and continued growth for our community
and we do not take them for
granted.
As a community, local leaders continue
to strive to meet the goals of all
citizens. There is a continued effort for
economic and population growth to
expand the services that are available.
At the same time, we want to continue
to take care of those existing businesses
to help them grow and provide high
quality services and various amenities
for the current population base.
Our long term dreams are that we
continue with the growth we experience
today. Always improving, expanding
and bettering our city not only to
meet the needs of today but for future
generations to come. It is also important
for us to respect our history, preserve
what we were founded upon, as
we grow into the future.
As you can see, 2014 proved to be a
very successful year for the community
of Sheldon and for that we are grateful
to all of the individuals and businesses
who helped make the success possible.
I strongly encourage you to take a deep
look into this community guide to see
CURT STROUTH
everything that we have to offer you
and your family. I want to thank you
for making Sheldon a part of your day
today and our community hopes that
you will take a piece of Sheldon with
you no matter where you go from here.
Sheldon…Where Families Come First!
Letter from Allison Cooke
It’s crazy to think that I’ll be starting
my third year in this position! I
guess time flies when you’re having
fun! It’s awesome to see how much
has changed and the new, great things
happening in Sheldon; our office has
turned over 100% over the past year,
we’ve grown as a chamber, revamped
promotions, events, and activities and
grown as a community.
One of my favorite quotes is, “The
most damaging words in the English
language are: It’s always been done this
way.” We have a great staff, board and
membership base that I feel supports
this quote. We’re growing and things are
changing and the chamber is changing
with them. The year of 2014 was a very
successful year both on the chamber
side and the development side but I’m
excited to continue to try some new
events and change some things here in
Sheldon.
Change isn’t always a bad thing. We’ve
seen some great changes on main
street, like how having gorgeous pots on
the corners to brighten up the downtown.
Building an event center would
be a great change for Sheldon, as would
new affordable housing to bring new
people to town. I’m looking forward
to what changes 2015 has in store. I’m
excited to work with each of you and do
what I can to help you succeed. Sheldon
really is a great place to live, work
and visit. Thank you to each and every
one of you who makes the Chamber
possible. Without you as members,
Sheldon wouldn’t be what it is today!
Rick Nordahl
is serving as
the president
of the Sheldon
Chamber and Development Board of
Directors for 2015.
Here are Nordahl’s thoughts regarding
the SCDC and development matters:
Q: What do you think were the biggest
accomplishments of the SCDC
during the past year?
A: Our biggest accomplishment was
setting our priorities along with the city
council strategy session. Then, moving
a significant goal to reality with some
additional affordable housing options,
SCDC
including rentals. This continues to be
an issue as we have employers with
openings left unfilled because we don’t
have enough housing options available.
Q: What are your top goals for the
SCDC in 2015?
A: We would like to see a concerted
effort and support for a community
conference and event venues come
to reality. The need is here and the
demand is available in our market and
again as we look toward attracting and
retaining people in town we need a
venue for community-sized activities
that we currently don’t have available.
Q: Are there any projects that you
would like to see the SCDC pursue?
A: Our focus is to really take a look at
how we support our members and their
employment and retention needs. With
that in mind the overall goal is to make
our community more saleable to individuals
and then companies looking to
start up or expand in northwest Iowa.
We are progressive minded and look to
greater diversity to ensure a great workforce
and community benefit structure
for the future.
26 2015 SHELDON COMMUNITY GUIDE

THE VILLAGE
Village Northwest Unlimited has served the needs of
adults with disabilities since 1975, including residential,
vocational, and therapeutic services. Village
Northwest Unlimited is a private, nonprofit organization
governed by a board of directors who come from a number
of area communities. Village Northwest Unlimited’s mission
is to provide purpose, privacy and dignity for all people.
Their team of 380 professionally-trained staff are dedicated
to serving the whole person by striving to meet each person’s
needs spiritually, socially, physically and intellectually.
Activities for the individuals are never lacking. Each day,
individuals may participate in physical therapy, occupational
therapy, communications, music therapy, exercise and
sports development, recreation, life skills and social activities.
Community involvement is another important part of
the Village way of life, with people involved in activities such
as shopping, social and sporting events and entertainment
activities in Sheldon and the surrounding communities.
The spiritual well-being of each person is high on the priority
list and attendance at the church of his or her choice is
encouraged.
Northwest Enterprises and Futures Unlimited, the vocational
division of the Village, provide a number of employment
opportunities for those served, including sorting
beverage containers for recycling, bulk mailings and newspaper
inserting, building warehouse pallets, assembly and
packaging and more. In 2009, Village Northwest Unlimited
partnered with Soles4Souls, a Nashville-based shoe charity,
as a processing center. Donated shoes are processed by
the individuals served at Village Northwest, providing paid
employment, as well as an opportunity to help those less
fortunate around the world. Along with the paid contract
jobs, individuals are also assisted in securing communitybased
employment.
Village Northwest Unlimited is located two blocks north
of Highway 18 East, north of the Sheldon High School. For
Industry in Sheldon is booming — stimulating the economy,
creating jobs, providing products for companies throughout
the region and the country. Industry has always meant
progress, and in Sheldon, it means progressing toward a better
future for the city and its residents.
The Maintainer Corporation of Iowa opened in 1976 and
is now one of the largest manufacturers and sellers of heavy
duty customized service bodies, service body cranes and
lube bodies.
Their very first body design was called a BMT (Basic Maintainer
Body) and was a flatbed with a behind cab mounted
fixed boom crane. It was designed to fulfill a specific customer
need to service equipment in the field.
The company hopes to serve its customers with superior
value in function and durability.
Rome Ltd. began in 1977 in Ankeny, Iowa providing service
to the oil milling industry. Over the years and as the company
grew it had offices in Texas and Florida, however it always
remained headquartered in Iowa.
In 1986 all personnel and equipment were brought under
one roof and relocated to the company’s current location in
Sheldon.
It also shifted its focus away from oil milling and morphed
into the food processing industry. The company has become
an industry leader in the manufacturing of meat grinders
— providing companies with new grinders, new parts and
replacement pieces. The company has CNC machining technology,
an in-house engineer, in-house tin plating and other
services that set it apart.
ROSENBOOM
www.rosenboom.com
Rosenboom was founded in 1974 by Lary and Viv Rosenboom
as a tool and die shop but today is a leading manufacturer
of custom hydraulic cylinders, both nationally and
internationally.
Their approach starts
with collaborative engineering,
and because
they do everything
under one roof, they
offer greater efficiency
and higher quality control
from start to finish.
All their cylinders are
manufactured using LEAN cellular processes. They use
robotic welding for consistency and integrity. And each cylinder
is then oil tested and painted to customers’ specifications.
The company serves a variety of industries: Aerial, construction,
refuse and waste handling, transportation, agriculture,
military, renewable energy and more. Rosenboom is still
family owned.
HIGHWAY 60 DEVELOPMENT
The community of Sheldon
was at a crossroads when
the Iowa Department of
Transportation announced
it would bypass the city to
build the new Highway 60
expressway.
With vision and foresight,
the community chose to look
at the bypass as opportunity.
That attitude allowed an
atmosphere of opportunity
to settle in and the city has
grown.
The Runger Addition was
started first north of Highway
18 and west of Highway
60. The development area,
consisting of mostly commercial
businesses such as
Pizza Ranch, Neal Chase
Lumber and a strip mall that
contains Los Tulipanes Mexican
Restaurant and Chinese
Chef, has spaces available for
growth. A small light industrial
area remains available
for development.
The city then began developing
Sheldon Crossing, a
commercial area located
south of Highway 18 and
west of Highway 60. Sheldon
Plaza/McDonald’s, Holiday
Inn Express and Taco John’s
have located there so far. The
east side of the Highway 60
expressway is growing as well.
Crossroads Industrial Park, a
heavy industrial area opened
in 2013 on the east side of the
Highway 60 expressway and
south of Highway 18.
The approximately 70-acre
development site welcomed
Ziegler Cat, based in Minneapolis,
as the first occupant.
The heavy equipment retailer
will also have an extensive
service location.
White Wolf Web rebuilt in
its new location after a fire
destroyed the company’s
original structure.
In 2014 a total of nine light
industrial lots were sold in
the Runger Development
Park, and they will produce
extensive commercial development
in 2015.
The year of 2014 also saw
the opening of the Sheldon
Crossing Residential Development.
Infrastructure is
all completed and ready for
development. There were
four residential lots sold in
2014 and currently there is a
$5,000 incentive available to
individuals interested in purchasing
a lot in the brand new
residential development.
EDUCATION
ELEMENTARY EXPANSION
School bells rang amid sounds of
construction to start off the 2014-15
academic year at East Elementary in
Sheldon.
Students walked into new and renovated
facilities on the first day of school
on Wednesday, Aug. 20, 2014. The start
of classes at the elementary was pushed
back two days later than the Sheldon
middle and high schools.
Many aspects of the building project
were completed, but much work
remained — with the final touches
expected to be completed in January.
New construction for the project
included a multipurpose area/gymnasium
with seating for about 400
students, an expanded nurse’s room, a
principal’s office and front offices, eight
larger classrooms for kindergarten and
first grade, and an expanded media
center. Renovations of existing space
included expanded classrooms and a
lunchroom.
Students and teachers had to deal with
less-than-ideal situations during the
first semester as construction continued.
In the end, though, the project is
expected to benefit students for years
after many years of cramped conditions.
The project was the culmination of
many years of planning. Voters overwhelmingly
approved three referendum
questions to authorize the financing
for the $5.7 million East Elementary
project during an election on Feb. 5,
2013. The vote was the second attempt
by the district to pass an elementary
building project — with a previous project
defeated in December 2008. Construction
began in August 2013.
RECREATION
RECREATION OPPORTUNITIES
Sheldon has a variety of indoor and
outdoor recreational opportunities to
keep you and your family busy all year
round. Check out all of these hot spots.
SHELDON CITY PARK
Located along Highway 18 in the center
of the community, the park features
two softball diamonds, two shelter
houses, a sand volleyball court and
Playground Paradise, a large wooden
playground constructed by scores of
community volunteers in 1993. Playground
Paradise has areas geared to
younger and older children, slides of all
sizes, a puppet theatre and many other
aspects.
HILLS PARK
Tucked away in the northwest corner
of town along Highway 60, Hills Park
is a beautiful spot to camp or have a
picnic. The park is located adjacent to
the Floyd River and offers views of the
countryside.
Hills Park offers a new nine-hole disc
golf course that winds around the
area and is a popular destination for
fans of the sport. For runners, bikers
and walkers, the Sheldon Recreational
Trail begins at Hills Park and winds
around the countryside, along rows of
trees and fields. Relax on a park bench
located less than a mile from the trail
head and see a great view of the Sheldon
countryside.
For more fun, bring the kids to a picnic
at Hills Park. Picnic shelter, tables and
grills are available for a fun afternoon
outside in the spring, summer or fall.
Kids can stop by the playground to
swing, slide and climb.
There are 26 campsites available for
RVs, which are each equipped with
electric hookups and water. Showers
and RV dump sites are also available at
Hills Park.
Aside from the amenities, Hills Park
offers a bit of Sheldon history, too:
According to folklore, in the early 1900s,
an elephant from the circus visiting
town died and was buried in the park.
Aside from the amenities and history,
Hills Park showcases some of Sheldon’s
most beautiful scenery. The park is
known for its rolling hills and large
trees, which make the park a perfect
place to relax on sunny, warm days.
THORMAN PARK
Located between 15th and 16th avenues
on the southern edge of Sheldon,
playground equipment and is
just two blocks south of the Sheldon
Recreational Trail.
RECREATION PROJECTS
YOUTH SPORTS COMPLEX
The youth sports complex is starting
to take shape on the north side of the
Sheldon School District’s campus along
Highway 18.
The project, which includes three
youth baseball and softball fields and
green spaces for soccer and practice
football fields, is being completed in a
50-50 partnership between the city of
Sheldon and the school district.
The goal is to have the project mostly
completed by spring.
Both the Sheldon School District
Board of Education and Sheldon City
Council have agreed the addition of
the new fields would be an asset to the
community and are working in partnership
on the project.
EVENTS CENTER &
COMMUNITY PARK
The proposed venue would be located
on Sheldon’s east side — near the Sheldon
Crossing housing development — in
an area adjacent to the borrow pit pond.
Mike Bell, a landscape architect for
RDG Planning and Design in Des
Moines, shared a few mock-ups his firm
had created for the event center and
land surrounding it.
He suggested the Sheldon Community
Park Planning Committee treat
the events center and the park portion
as two separate projects and each be
zoned accordingly as such.
The draft he presented of the projects,
which is temporarily being referred to
as “Sheldon Community Park,” showed
the area in front of the events center
with a large green space.
Picnic shelters and creating a recreational
trail around the pond were
consensus additions to the park, but
placing playground equipment seemed
to be inconclusive.
Bell’s mock-up of the actual events
center featured a great room with a
seating capacity of 210 people and
could be divided into two.
It also featured two side entrances that
led into two separate lobby areas and
no front entrance.
There also was talk of having a deck
attached to the great room that would
overlook the pond.
The events center is projected to cost
about $3.5 million.
Northwest Iowa Community
College in Sheldon offers
two options: Technical programs
or arts and sciences
transfer courses.
ALL YOU NEED TO KNOW
In the technical program
at NCC, instructors teach
skills and provide hands-on
learning. If students choose
to be in one of the technical
programs, they’ll learn
that success is all about the
hands-on skills they learn
while there. They’ll work
on equipment in state-ofthe-art
labs, be guided by
instructors who have been
out there in real world and
learn exactly what they need
to know.
So whether students are
interested in auto body
or powerline, mechanics
electricity or machines, or
if welding, computer aided
drafting, construction technology
or heavy equipment
is more their style, they’ll
find it at NCC. Students will
graduate with solid skills and
abilities that will than them
jobs with the confidence to
make good decisions in their
careers. Many of the NCC
technical program students
transfer to four-year colleges
and universities.
START AT NCC,
THEN TRANSFER
NCC also offers arts and
sciences transfer programs.
Start at NCC by taking basic
core course. For two years,
students can save money
and stay closer to home,
then transfer to a four-year
college or university.
NCC has many agreements
to allow students to transfer
to a four-year institution.
Some NCC partners are:
n Iowa State University in
Ames and the University of
Iowa in Iowa City both have
signed seamless transfer
agreements with NCC. There
are many degrees now available
through this agreement.
Students will receive an
adviser for both NCC and
ISU or U of I to make their
transition as easy as possible.
n Briar Cliff College in
Sioux City has a program
that allows students to earn
a four-year degree without
leaving the NCC campus.
Business administration and
human resources management
are offered.
n Bellevue University in
Bellevue, NE, has a program
that makes it possible for
students to complete their
bachelor’s degree the following
year after they complete
their associate’s two-year
degree either online or on a
campus.
n Northwestern College
in Orange City’s program
allows students in designated
two-year associate of
arts degree programs at NCC
to continue their education
at Northwestern to earn a
bachelor of arts degree in
elementary education.
n Dordt College in Sioux
Center allows students in
designated two-year associate
of applied science
degree programs at NCC to
continue their education at
Dordt to earn a bachelor of
arts degree in engineering
technology.
n NCC students also transfer
to South Dakota State
University in Brookings, SD,
the University of Northern
Iowa in Cedar Falls, Franklin
University in Columbus,
OH, and Capella University
in Minneapolis, plus many
other schools.
IN DEMAND
Over the last five years,
NCC’s total college employment
rate has averaged 98
percent. Many of the highlyskilled
specialist program
have consistently had 100
percent employment success
for their graduates.
The NCC Placement Office
offers lifetime placement
assistance for its graduates.
BUSINESS DEVELOPMENT
AND TRAINING CENTER
NCC’s Business Development
and Training Center
includes the Continuing
Education Department and
the Business & Industry
Center. Through continuing
education, noncredit enrollment
annually exceeds
26,000 in job training,
retraining, adult literacy,
state- and federally-mandated
programs, and recreation
line-haul transportation unit that
moves general equipment and supplies
as assigned. The company has two
detachments. Detachment 1 is located
in Sioux City. Detachment 2 is located
in Fort Dodge.
The Sheldon unit supports other Iowa
National Guard units by transporting
equipment and supplies to training
sites. The unit has performed missions
all over the world, including California,
Washington state, Louisiana, Maine,
Wyoming, Nevada and Washington,
D.C., as well as Iraq and Kuwait.
The unit has year-round training,
which allows members who have
seasonal jobs to arrange their training
accordingly.
The Sheldon Armory has a long and
storied history of service:
n The Guard was located in Hull 1902-
11.
n Company E of the 2nd Iowa Infantry
was established in Sheldon in 1911.
n Company E fought at the Pancho
Villa Mexican Border in 1917. That
same year, it mobilized for World War I
and served until November 1918.
n Company E was redesignated in
1920 as Company I of the 133rd Infantry,
which served in World War II 1941-
45.
n The Sheldon unit was reorganized
as Company B 2nd Mechanized Battalion
of the 133rd Infantry in 1968. That
same year, the 2nd Battalion mobilized
for the Vietnam War.
n Company B was reorganized as an
element of the 34th Infantry Division in
1991.
n The unit was once again reorganized
in 1996 as Detachment 1, Company
C, of the 113th Armored Calvary.
n Reorganization again occurred Jan.
1, 1997, as Detachment 1 of the 1133rd
Transportation Co. of Mason City.
n The 2168th Transportation Co., a
new unit of the Iowa Army National
Guard, began in Sheldon, replacing
Detachment 1 of the 1133rd.
n In 2003, the 2168th mobilized a platoon
to Fort Benning, GA, in support of
Operation Enduring Freedom.
n The 2168th was mobilized for Operation
Iraqi Freedom in August 2004,
performing more than 300 mission to
many key locations all over Kuwait and
Iraq. The soldiers returned home in
October 2005.
n In May 2008, the unit sent several
soldiers to assist with the Parkersburg
tornado tragedy. Then they worked out
of Des Moines and Burlington to help
with flooding in June and spent time
in Louisiana helping after Hurricane
Gustav in September.
n In 2010, Sheldon unit members
departed on staggered mobilization
dates July 30-Aug. 9 for Camp Shelby
near Hattiesburg, MS, for additional
training. They then left for Afghanistan
as a part of 2,800 soldiers in the National
Guard’s 2nd Brigade Combat Team,
34th Infantry Division based in Boone,
making up the single largest deployment
of Iowa National Guard troops
since World War II. All of the troops
returned home safely in 2011.
LIVE HEALTHY SHELDON
Each January, Sheldon residents
buckle down to give their belt buckles a
break.
Live Healthy Sheldon, a 10-week
health challenge, started in 2006 to get
people motivated to lose weight and get
Participants form teams to compete in
either the weight-loss division, activity
Prizes are awarded for the winning
teams and individuals in each category.
HISTORY
SOUNDS OF THE PAST
Off in the distance, you can hear a
shrill whistle of a train as it announces
its arrival in Sheldon.
That same sound was the one that
brought businesses and people to a
place settlers came to call home.
During the past 130 years, Sheldon has
been home to many generations that
have played a part in the city’s growth
and development. Yet, anyone who
visits Sheldon today may find it hard to
believe the community once was occupied
solely by large herds of elk, buffalo
and deer.
Throughout most of the 1880s, the
land on which the community stands
was prairie. Actually, much of O’Brien
County was unsettled because it was
sitting on a land zone established by
the federal government. The zone separated
Sioux Indians to the west and Sac
and Fox Indians to the east. Because it
was often used as a battleground and
the government troops who could help
were occupied with the Civil War, most
settlers made their homes on more
peaceful land.
With the coming of surveyors, the
land started to look more attractive,
especially as a crossing for the railroad
connecting Omaha to the Twin Cities.
As the tracks neared O’Brien County
in 1871, surveyors platted the city to be
named after Israel Sheldon, a prominent
businessman, adventurer and
stockholder in the railroad.
BUSTLING PRAIRIE TOWN
Not until July 3, 1872, was the prairie
replaced by buildings and houses. And
with construction half-finished, settlers
stopped to celebrate Independence
Day on a patch of grass called City Park.
That community spirit guided the
new settlement to become the largest
town in O’Brien County. After just six
months, The Sheldon Mail newspaper
was reporting the history-making
events of the town. And within the next
44 2015 SHELDON COMMUNITY GUIDE
10 years, a saloon, lumberyard and
hardware store were serving the people
of Sheldon.
Yet, the business that first put Sheldon
on the map was a giant mill that ground
grain into feed and flour, which then
was shipped throughout the prairie
nation.
The Prairie Queen Mill was a drawing
card for Sheldon, as the owners
built an elevator and 18 cottages for
the employees. The mill’s influence
was most notable in the monetary
value it brought to Sheldon, bringing in
$600,000 within its first year.
Because of the way the mill fueled the
growth of the town, Sheldon acquired
the name Prairie Queen City. Sheldon
still notes its roots with organizations
like the Prairie Queen Kiwanis, Sheldon
Prairie Museum and Prairie Arts Council.
DESTROYED BY FIRE
In the midst of the city’s growth,
Sheldon faced its first major setback
in July 1888 when a blaze started in a
downtown loft and traveled through the
business district. Because the wooden
structures were built close together, the
fire spread quickly, wiping out most of
the downtown businesses.
The community did not dwell on the
tragedy long. Rather, residents made an
opportunity out of the circumstances
by rebuilding downtown into a popular
shopping area, lined with impressive
brick buildings.
Today, it is easy to see how influential
the events of Sheldon’s history have
been on the city. The downtown continues
to offer a variety of services still
housed in the historic brick buildings.
Sheldon also boasts a variety of restaurants,
cultural activities, entertainment
and recreational opportunities.
The influence of agriculture still is
quite evident as well, particularly in the
storage elevators of Ag Partners that
can be spotted several miles from Sheldon
and the AGP facility that rises high
above the trees.
STILL GOING STRONG
As in the past, Sheldon schools continue
to be an important part of the community’s
future. The schools include
the public facilities of the Sheldon
Community School District. Those are
complemented by two private schools,
Sheldon Christian School and St. Patrick’s
Catholic School.
Northwest Iowa Community College
also contributes to the community,
drawing students from around
the region, many who later become
residents of Sheldon.
Village Northwest Unlimited employs
many Sheldon residents. The Village
is a well-respected facility that serves
hundreds of adults with disabilities.
Through the efforts of the Village,
Sheldon also became known as The
Marigold City. The Village started the
community-wide project to plant
thousands of marigolds along Sheldon’s
highways each year for 17 years, ending
in 2007.
In addition to the moniker of The
Marigold City, Sheldon has used the
slogans of “Prairie Queen City” and
“Sheldon: A Really Nice Place.”
In 2007, a Sheldon Marketing Committee
was formed with the purpose
of establishing an identity for Sheldon.
The new brand is “Sheldon: Where
Families Come First,” uniting the community
and values of the city.
Yet, all of the sights and sounds that
have developed in Sheldon, the one
sound that continues to tell the story
of the city’s history is the daily train
whistles, announcing their arrival to
Sheldon.
