Alien Wasps
Opens 1 September
The exhibition highlights the presence of two predatory alien wasps in South Africa. The European yellow
jacket (Vespula germanica) and the European paper wasp (Polistes dominulus) are large, social wasps
constructing paper nests. They have potent venom, inflicting painful stings and are a threat to the local
economy and environment. Both are pests and an incidental threat to picnickers as they are protein
scavengers, attracted to sugary substances, and sting readily if disturbed. These invasive species have a
potential impact on local ecosystems through prey competition; on the honey industry as they hunt bees;
and on the wine and fruit industry through fruit feeding damage and subsequent secondary fungal infection.
R-A-T: An Associative Ordering
Until 8 December
Curated by Fritha Langerman, this exhibition uses Rattus norvegicus, the brown rat, as a means to
explore the representation of species within museums of natural history. Rather than a discrete
display, R-A-T is an exhibition dispersed throughout the museum. Furtively making its way into
disused corners and cabinets, this spread introduces the rat in relation to ranging themes,
suggesting manners in which museum display impacts on the understanding of species.
Words of Slaves: Places of Memory
Until 30 September
The exhibition is the result of collaboration between the French photographer, Philippe Monges and
The Shackles of Memory (Les Anneaux de la Mémoire), based in Nantes in France. It traces the legacy
and history over some 400 years of the Atlantic Slave Trade, from enslavement of people in the African
interior and construction of slave forts by Europeans on the coast; to the journeys of death on European
slave ships; the exploitation and decimation of slaves in the high-profit colonial sugar plantations of the
Caribbean; the resistance and fight to escape their enslavement by slave men and women; ending with
the wealthy and grand homes of European slave traders in Nantes and other French towns.
Until March 2014
This exhibition about the African National Congress leader and politician, Oliver Tambo, is produced
by the Apartheid Museum. Tambo, along with Nelson Mandela and Walter Sisulu, were founding
members of the ANC Youth League in 1943. Tambo headed the ANC’s Mission in Exile and led the
organisation during challenging times. The exhibition depicts Tambo’s career, in which he played a
The isishweshwe story: material women?
Until 31 December 2014
By means of costumes, accessories and contextual images, this exhibition traces the origins of
isishweshwe cloth from its roots as a trade item in Asia and Europe, to its establishment as a much-loved
southern African material icon. The diverse uses of this cloth, from the apron of the Xhosa makoti to
high fashion clothing, are displayed using items collected by Dr Juliette Leeb-du Toit over many
years, and generously donated to Iziko in 2012.
Martyrs, Saints and Sellouts: The photographs of Benny Gool, Adil Bradlow
and Zubeida Vallie
Until 11 October
For the first time, the photographs of anti-apartheid photographers, Benny Gool, Zubeida Vallie and
Adil Bradlow are brought together in a group exhibition. These three young photographers and friends were
to be found with their cameras documenting apartheid South Africa, dodging security police, taking part in
protests, and were detained on several occasions. These images provide an opportunity to think about key
questions in South Africa, including archives, history, freedom and repair, and remind us now of the human
cost demanded by apartheid. The exhibition comprises 61 framed images, a video installation and a
sculptural piece.
Against the Grain: Sculptors from the Cape
14 August to 17 November
Rooms 2 and 3
Against the Grain profiles the work of five wood sculptors from the Western Cape. Working for many
years in often difficult conditions with little support, the artists Isaac Makeleni, Ishmael Thyssen,
Shepherd Mbanya, Timothy Mafenuka, and Thami Kiti have all produced imaginative and skilful works
of art. While showcasing their work, Against the Grain also questions their present exclusion from the
South African artistic canon, as well as the lack of appreciation of the work of black African wood
sculptors in present discourses about contemporary African art.
Dialogues: Conversations between ‘old’ and ‘new’
Historical, modern and contemporary works of art from the Iziko Art Collections
Until 18 August
Room 10
Dialogues profiles a variety of works from different periods that demonstrate a commonality in terms
of either formal concerns or theme and content. The pairings, juxtapositions and groupings in this
exhibition attempt to reveal a ‘dialogue’ between ‘old’ and ‘new’; past and present. Some works are
being seen again for the first time in years, revealing underlying consistencies in diverse
artistic expression across time and space, between South Africa and the world at large.
Opening ‘Plato’s Cave’: The Legacy of Kevin Atkinson (1939-2007)
11 September 2013 to 9 February 2014
Rooms 1, 10 and 11
A protean and controversial artistic personality between the 1960s and the 1990s, Kevin Atkinson
embraced a multiplicity of approaches to making art, and made a deep impression on generations of
students at UCT. This exhibition, drawn from Atkinson’s underground studio named ‘Plato’s Cave’,
is both a posthumous tribute and an attempt to come to a greater understanding of the impressive
contribution that he made to South African art, both as an artist and an educator.
2013 Standard Bank Young Artist Award – Mary Sibande
26 November 2013 to 15 January 2014
Mary Sibande is celebrated for her sculptural practice in which she employs the human female form as
a vehicle through painting and sculpture, to explore the construction of identity in a post-colonial South
African context. She attempts to critique stereotypical depictions of (particularly black) women in our
society. Through her work, Sibande highlights the rituals of imitation and reproduction that black
women sometimes perform in order to conform to Western ideals of beauty and femininity.
When works of art enter a public collection they not only bring with them a fascinating and chequered
history, but also reveal much about the institution’s motives and ambitions in acquiring them. This
selection from the permanent collection highlights moments from the shifting history of the Iziko Art
Collection and the changing nature of its collecting policy over the past 130 years.
