B6 | Tulip Festival
Did you know?
Between the
years of 1942-1946
while World War II raged in
Europe, the Tulip Festival was
put on hold. It was replaced
by Victory Days.
There were
3,500 people who
attended the first
ever Tulip Festival in
1936. It began as a
one-day festival.
Hundreds if not
thousands of
children have learned to do
the Dutch Dances in
wooden shoes during PE
classes at school in Orange
City throughout
the years.
When the
thousands of visitors
descend on Orange City for the
Tulip Festival they have the
opportunity to try some special
Dutch treats. Some of the more
popular ones include poffertjes,
almond patties & letters, pea
soup, Dutch puppies
and saucijsjes.
Before the
Tulip Festival, there was the
Tulip Show. In 1933, the local
Lion’s Club, Yard and Garden Club
and the Women’s Club
sponsored the first-ever
Tulip Show.
Acording to Brett
Mulder, who owns the
Tulip Town Bulb Company with
his wife, Nora, there are about
50,000-60,000 tulip bulbs planted
every year in anticipation of
Tulip Festival.
The Tulip Festival marks a major anniversary May 14-16
The Tuplip Festival is here again.
The citizens of Orange City
will spend hours volunteering to
prepare for the event, people will deck
themselves out in traditional Dutch
costumes and there will be tens of
thousands of tulips in bloom around
the town.
But that’s nothing new. In fact, 2015
will mark the 75th year of the Tulip
Festival.
For those who have been working
to pull this special occasion together,
the excitement is mounting as the
event nears.
“We are eagerly looking forward
to the 75th Tulip Festival and all of
the things that have been planned,”
said Arlyn Schaap, who serves as a cochairperson
along with his wife, Bea,
on the steering committee.
“A lot of work goes into that, and
there’s still more work to do. We
just hope what we’ve planned will
be enjoyable to the citizens and the
visitors who come to the festival. We
are excited to have them celebrate this
special anniversary with us.”
In the essentials, the 75th Tulip
Festival won’t be that much different
than the first one held in 1936, according
to Don and Nelva Schreur.
Both are longtime Orange City residents
and have memories of being involved
with Tulip Festival when they
were just kids. They have continued in
that tradition and Nelva has become
the Tulip Festival’s historian and Don
has served on various planning committees.
“At the first Tulip Festival in 1936
there were people wearing wooden
shoes and Dutch costumes,” said
Don. “Jacob Van’t Hoff and Wilhelm
Jansen were carving wooden shoes.
There was a parade, bands, Dutch
food and lots of tulips.”
And in 2015?
“If you come to Tulip Festival now
you would still find people carving
wooden shoes, Dutch food, and people
wearing Dutch costumes — but
now those costumes are completely
authentic,” Don said. “Now instead
of one band there are many bands
and parades and we have way more
tulips.”
Don and Nelva are especially proud
of the Tulip Festival because over its
75 years it has carried on tradition
and what they are doing today is very
similar to everything they have done
over the years.
“Five to ten years from now, you
will be able to come to the festival
and see a lot of the same things as you
would have in 1936,” said Don.
“We have worked to improve the
quality but keep the same important
events.” F
Meet the new
Tulip Festival
Queen
Cara Venema
crowned queen
for 2015
Like most little girls living
in Orange City, Cara
Venema dreamed of
someday reigning as queen
over the community’s annual
Tulip Festival.
“While standing by the
Dutch dancing tree in third
grade waiting to line up to
dance before the Straatfest,
I saw the beautiful queen —
my swimming lessons teacher
from the past summer. Ever
since that moment, it’s been
my dream to be on the Tulip
Court,” said the senior
at MOC-Floyd Valley High
School in Orange City.
Her fantasy became reality
on Nov. 24, 2014, when she
was crowned queen of the
2015 Tulip Festival.
She will join the other Tulip
Court members — Jennifer
Droog, Sydney Huizenga,
Micah Vande Vegte and Emily
Wielenga — in representing
Orange City during the 75th
annual celebration May 14-
16.
Venema is looking forward
to the upcoming event, and
she plans on taking the 2015
theme — “Remembering Our
Roots” — to heart.
“I know a lot of people
come and have a beautiful
time in a beautiful town, but
I want people to know our
heritage — the story behind
the costumes we wear, the
story behind why we’re dancing
and the story behind each
float,” she said.
Venema’s own Dutch
heritage is well-known to the
17-year-old.
Her great-great-great-greatgrandfather,
Jacob Venema,
immigrated by boat to the
United States from Groningen,
Netherlands, in 1904.
He made the trek to be with
his brother, Pieter, and the
rest of the namesake soon followed.
Ninety-four years later, Cara
Venema celebrated her roots
by donning a Dutch hat for
her first Tulip Festival when
she was less than a year old.
Her interest in the event has
never wavered.
Venema traded in her hat
for traditional Groningen
costumes and started riding
floats in preschool.
She began Dutch dancing
in third grade and later joined
MOC-Floyd Valley’s wooden
Cara Venema, a senior at MOC-Floyd Valley High School in Orange City,
will reign as the 2015 Tulip Festival Queen. Since being crowned in November,
she and the other members of the court have been traveling
the state spreading the word of the 75th event, scheduled for May 14-16.
shoe-clad Pride of the Dutchmen
Marching Band.
She has since participated
in about every aspect of the
annual celebration, from
sweeping the streets to taking
the stage in the night show.
Venema will have to give up
all of her other Tulip Festival
activities this year to fulfill her
queen duties.
“I’ll miss that this year, but
it’s worth it,” she said.
The teenager particularly is
looking forward to stuffing
down a few poffertjes, her
favorite Tulip Festival treat.
“I usually don’t have time
for more than one of those
between all the activities I’m
involved in, but this year I
hope to make a few special
trips over there,” Venema
said. F
Tasty treats await at Tulip Festival
Poutine, BBQ highlight new items this year
The Orange City Tulip Festival is
a celebration of Dutch heritage.
It’s also a celebration of food,
with the different vendors scattered
about.
People partake in their favorite
foods, whether they are of Dutch
heritage or traditional American-style
carnival foods.
The blend of foods helps draw
crowds year after year according to
Tulip Festival Concessions Food Stand
and Carnival Coordinator Clark Pennings.
“It’s a Dutch heritage festival, but
it’s also an eating festival, too,” Pennings
said.
He recalled a person who would
eat many foot-long hot dogs each day
throughout the festival.
People have certain favorites they go
back to each year.
“There’s people that hit the food
stands or Straatmarkt and just move
around,” Pennings said.
New this year is a number of barbecue
items, along with a Canadian
delicacy, poutine – a Canadian dish
consisting of french fries, topped with
gravy and cheese curds.
The vendor bringing poutine has
received rave reviews.
“They do the North Dakota State
Fair, and they said that they had some
Canadians come down who said it
was the best poutine they’ve ever
tasted,” Pennings said.
Poutine and a number of barbecue
items join the traditional Tulip Festival
staples such as the Dutch letter
and pea soup.
The menu sees a bit of variety as the
years go on.
“We’ll change the menu as time
goes on, but not make big wholesale
changes,” Pennings said.
The menu at the Tulip Festival consists
of items that all taste buds can
enjoy no matter the weather.
“If it’s hot, we’ve got the ice creams
and snow cones,” Pennings said. “If
it’s more moderate temperatures, we
have the hot products and blended
coffees. We’ve got everything in between.”
Arts & Crafts
Tulip Festival is a time for Dutch
costumes, traditional food, parades
and tulips, of course. But it’s
also a time to appreciate art and crafts.
Two different events will be held
on Saturday, May 16, during Orange
City’s 75th Tulip Festival that are dedicated
to the arts and to crafters. Art-
Burst will take place on the grounds of
the Sioux County Courthouse and a
Craft Show will be taking place in the
handicap accessible basement of Iowa
State Bank.
ArtBurst
Artists, hailing from five states, will
have their work on display and for
sale at ArtBurst on Saturday, May 16.
The juried exhibition will feature
artists who work in all types of mediums
including painting in oil, acrylic
or watercolor; ceramics; jewelry;
tooled leather goods; custom metal
signs and art; etchings and lithographs;
hand-painted silk scarves and
garments; stone-and-iron sculpture;
hardwood frames, furniture and
plaques, and much more.
“ArtBurst is an opportunity for artists
in the region to exhibit and sell
their work during a festival that annually
attracts thousands of people
to Orange City. We have artists who
return year after year, as well as a number
of first-time exhibitors,” said Anita
Cirulis, the coordinator for the 2015
ArtBurst.
In addition to perusing and shopping
for unique art, ArtBurst will also
feature live music by the band The
Usual Suspects from 10 a.m. to noon
and 4-6 p.m.
At ArtBurst you will have the opportunity
to actually create some art
as well.
Dakota Potters Supply of Sioux
Falls, SD, will be on hand to help
people create their very own piece of
raku pottery. “Customers purchase a
cast bisque piece of their choosing—
such as a bowl, box or figurine—and
apply a glaze, after which it is fired in
a raku kiln,” Cirulis said. This is how
she described what raku is:
“Raku is a pottery technique that
has its origins in 16th-century Japan.
The American, or Western, version
of the process involves removing the
fired raku piece from a kiln after it
reaches 1,800 degrees and placing it in
a container with combustible material,
such as paper, sawdust or leaves. The
carbon in the atmosphere of the fire
reacts with and affects the glazes and
clay, blackening unglazed surfaces and
and Craft Show
Craft Show
A new thing this year at the 75th
Tulip Festival is a Craft Show.
“We had a Craft Show before at one
time and we thought we could give it
a try and see if people are interested,”
said Aryln Schaap, who is the cochairperson
of the Steering Committee
along with his wife, Bea.
There is no admission fee and the
event will be held on Saturday, May
16, in the basement of the Iowa State
Bank, which is handicap accessible.
The organizers wanted to make sure
that the event would be a craft show
and not turn into a vendor fair.
“We wanted the products for sale
to be handmade, or homemade — a
person crafted it themselves,” Schaap
said.
Currently, there are approximately
20 crafters who will be selling their
products at the Craft Show. Some
things that will be for sale include
handmade clothing like baby clothes,
and Dutch American Girl dolls,
blankets, magnets, table runners and
napkins that have been embroidered,
to name just a few items.
Art lovers and arts and craft lovers
alike will have the opportunity to find
something they love at the 75th Anniversary
The Stadscentrum will be
painting for Orange
City’s 75th Tulip Festival.
The artwork, entitled “A Faithful
Walk,” will be on display at the
building during this year’s celebration,
which is set for Thursday-Saturday,
May 14-16.
During the Stadscentrum open
house Wednesday evening, the
Tulip Festival Steering Committee
auctioned off signed print number
1/75 of the painting by artist John
E. Vander Stelt.
New building to showcase Dutch street organ, wooden shoe equipment
The construction of Orange City’s new Stadscentrum building
has been completed in time for the community’s 75th Tulip
Festival.
The grand opening of the Stadscentrum — Dutch for “city center”
— was celebrated during an open house Wednesday evening
at the facility, which is located on the northeast corner of Central
Avenue and Second Street Northeast in Orange City.
“It’s pretty much in the center of the city,” said Mike Hofman,
executive director of the Orange City Chamber of Commerce.
“We wanted it to be in the heart of downtown.”
The structure will be used to store the community’s refurbished
Dutch street organ and equipment for making wooden shoes —
known in Dutch as “klompens.”
“We’re excited to have a showcase home for the organ and
wooden shoe-making equipment,” Hofman said.
Two kiosks in the structure also will depict Orange City and
Tulip Festival history through artifacts, narratives and photos.
“We’re excited to open Stadscentrum to the public,” said Les
Douma, chairman of the Stadscentrum Committee. “It’s a wonderful
addition to downtown Orange City and another unique
tourism aspect to our community.”
The Orange City Development Corporation owns the property
where the Stadscentrum is located and was in charge of overseeing
the project.
The 1,750-square-foot Stadscentrum is one story and has a
storefront with a Dutch motif, which includes a high roof, to fit
in with the décor of the community. The budget for the project
was approximately $400,000.
Funding for the work included private donations, a Sioux
County Community Foundation grant and contributions from
the city, the Tulip Festival Steering Committee, the Orange City
Community Betterment Board and the Orange City 21 Foundation,
which is the Development Corporation’s nonprofit fundraising
arm.
Work on the project began last summer, and the plan was to
have the Stadscentrum done in time for the 75th edition of the
city’s Tulip Festival, which is set for Thursday-Saturday, May 14-
16.
“We’ve met that goal,” Hofman said.
Not only will the building be accessible during the celebration,
it will be open throughout the year for other special events and
tours for both the Orange City community and visitors.
“We’d like to access the organ more for various community
events and to have it utilized more often than just the Tulip Festival,”
Hofman said.
“We want the shoe-making equipment on display to show people
who come to town how to make old Dutch wooden shoes.
It’s something to show tourists. We actually make shoes to sell to
people during the Tulip Festival.”F
Book celebrates
75 years of Orange
City’s Tulip Festival
Orange City native and author Bill
Kalsbeek discusses book’s content
His name may be on the front cover, but
author Bill Kalsbeek insists the book, “Celebrating
Our Dutch Heritage: The Story
of the Orange City Tulip Festival,” was a group
effort much like its namesake event.
This year marks the 75th anniversary of the
Tulip Festival and Kalsbeek’s book aims to tackle
its rich history. However, instead of writing it as
a strictly historical piece, Kalsbeek wanted to
add personal stories from the men and women
that have kept it afloat for three-quarters of a
century.
He held focus groups with former parade
organizers, festival queens and various local
experts on Dutch culture.
“These focus groups enabled me to develop a
reservoir of stories that I could work into the text
and make it interesting,” Kalsbeek said.
The retired college professor also scoured old
newspaper clippings, historical texts and studied
the Tulip Festival collections of longtime Orange
City residents, all of which put his decades of
research experience to use.
“I spent a lot of time thinking about how to
organize this,” Kalsbeek said.
It took Kalsbeek two and half years to put the
book together after he got permission from the
Orange City Tulip Festival Steering Committee.
The culmination of all the time and effort is
Kalsbeek’s six-chapter and 128-page tribute to
his hometown’s signature event.
“By description, this leads you to think that
is all words. But, if you look at the book that
I have written it is highly illustrated,” Kalsbeek
said. “We have a couple hundred photographs
in here and we’ve got old photographs and photographs
of virtually everything I’ve been talking
about.”
Although Kalsbeek is a part-time resident of
Orange City these days, he grew up in the area
and earned his undergraduate degree locally
In his decades away from Orange City, he never
forgot about the festival or his own personal
connection with it.
“My dad was the town crier for 28 years —
from 1950-1978 — so my family’s always been
To help celebrate the 75th anniversary of the Orange City Tulip Festival, Bill Kalsbeek
researched and wrote a book about the tradition.
involved with the festival,” Kalsbeek said.
Writing this book enabled Kalsbeek to rediscover
Orange City and give him more insight as
to why the Tulip Festival is so important to the
community.
“The community’s commitment to celebrating
its heritage, and the heritage is obviously
PHOTOS SUBMITTED
sort of the theme and the focus; but, to make
it happen it takes incredible commitment from
this community to pull this off,” Kalsbeek
said. “I’ve been just amazed at how, over the
years, people have stepped up. Volunteers, or
hundreds of volunteers, who love to make this
happen every year.” F
For the 75th Anniversary of the Orange City
Tulip Festival they are working to make sure everything
is perfect and better than ever. To put
it another way, they want to make sure everything is
just supercalifragilisticexpialidocious.
To that end the historic Tulip Festival Night Show,
which has been putting on a show ever since the
year 1950, is bringing something completely new
to the stage.
You might have already guessed it, but the 2015
Night Show will be the Disney and Cameron Mackintosh
adaption of “Mary Poppins.”
While this beloved musical is well-known thanks
to the theatrical efforts of Julie Andrews and Dick
Van Dyke, who have delighted generations of children
with the magical story throughout the years,
the Night Show version will pack a few surprises.
“The big thing about this show is that they took
the movie and some of the stories from the original
books by P.L. Travers that weren’t in the movie and
put them together to form something new,” said
Lois Estell, the director of this year’s Night Show.
“They did not want to make the musical play version
of the movie. They added more dancing sequences
and there is still that fun quality to it, but it
will be different.”
According to Estell, one big change theatre goers
will see in this version of “Mary Poppins” is a lot
more background about Mr. and Mrs. Banks.
The show will add George Banks’ nanny from his
childhood who he just adored. It will also deal a lot
more with Winifred Banks. In the Disney movie,
she is a suffragette for women’s equality, but in the
play that will be on stage in Orange City, there’s a
different back story.
Winifred was an actress before she married
George and she is trying to fit herself into his life.
“She is struggling with how to be a mom with
these kids and how to be a good wife and live up to
his standards,” Estell said. “While she’s struggling
with that, George is dealing with issues with the
band and he is distancing himself from the family.
Winifred is the one who stands up and says, ‘no,’
we’re going to deal with this together.”
“Mary Poppins” is the Night Show production that will be on stage during the Orange City
Tulip Festival this year. The musical will run from May 13-16.
Another cool aspect of this particular interpretation
of the story is watching the family dynamics
change as the play goes on.
“You get to see their family come together,” Estell
said. “They all start independent and separate from
each other and then it’s fun to see that change.”
One thing that the audience can count on is some
familiar tunes.
Many of the beloved songs were brought into this
new adaption including, “Feed the Birds,” “Step in
Time,” “Let’s Go Fly a Kite,” “Spoonful of Sugar,”
and, of course, “Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious.”
Estell has been involved with the Night Show
PHOTOS SUBMITTED
since 2003 when she auditioned for “Joseph and
the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat.”
She has either been onstage, working backstage or
sitting in the director’s chair for every Night Show
since, and she is extremely exciting for this upcoming
performance.
“There are a lot of high expectations because it’s
the 75th anniversary, but also because they know
‘Mary Poppins.’ The important thing to remember is
that it’s not the movie,” Estell said.
“But it’s exciting. It’s been a lot of work and technical
magic, but I am seeing it come together and I
can’t wait.” F
