SERVICES Managing your Healthcare Minimizing your Stress Patient Financial Services We need your help. As an informed healthcare consumer, you are your own best advocate in dealing with the financial responsibilities of your healthcare needs. As the major healthcare provider in the Bitterroot Valley, Marcus Daly Memorial Hospital is concerned with your physical well-being and your peace of mind. We know that making financial arrangements for healthcare services is stressful. When an individual or a family is dealing with illness or injury, dealing with hospital bills can make the situation a great deal more stressful. Perhaps the best way to lessen the financial anxiety associated with healthcare is to become an informed and prepared consumer. Tips to Help Manage Your Healthcare Bills • Read every bill or statement carefully • Report billing errors promptly • Keep copies of all checks, invoices, receipts, and billing statements • Make notes, including date, time and person you spoke with for all insurance and medical bills phone calls • To avoid collections, always pay your bill. If you cannot afford to pay, call to make payment arrangements. 10 | HEALTHLINES HEALTH INSURANCE If you have health insurance, your physician’s office and the hospital will need a copy of your insurance identification card. Always have your insurance card with you when you receive medical services to avoid problems with your bill. All insurance policies are different. Do you know the benefits that are included in your insurance policy? Most health plans and insurance companies require patients to have pre-approval or they will not pay for services. In an emergency situation, authorization requests should be made promptly, usually within 24 to 48 hours. Be aware of what your financial responsibilities are under your healthcare plan. Do you know what procedures and services are covered, and the deductibles and co-pays? A service that is not covered or is partially covered becomes the financial obligation of the patient. Knowing your obligations before service is provided may not make it any easier to pay your bill, but not being surprised by unexpected out-of-pocket expenses will help to lessen the anxiety. MEDICARE & MEDICAID COVERAGE To process your Medicare or Medicaid claim, your physician’s office or the hospital will need a copy of your Medicare/Medicaid card to verify eligibility. Be informed of the services and procedures that are covered under your benefits. Be aware of deductibles and co-payments which may be your responsibility. If you have supplemental insurance make sure to provide the relevant insurance information at time of service. If all healthcare coverage is not revealed at the time of your visit, the physician or hospital cannot bill against those plans and that may increase the portion of the bill that is your responsibility. “I appreciate everything that Alison in the Patient Financial Services has done for me. Very nice hospital and all the staff were helpful, informative and expedient. Thank you for making a semi-bad experience semi-pleasant.” - Quotes from Press Ganey Emergency Surveys Quilts For Care Bitterroot Quilters and the Hamilton Rotary Club are working together to provide quilts for children needing medical attention at Marcus Daly Memorial Hospital. Representatives of the organizations, Barbara Bayer, Shirley Wheat and Sharon Renfro recently presented Emergency Department staff with colorful, handmade quilts created as part of this philanthropic partnership. Hamilton’s Rotary Club contributed $1000 towards purchasing quilting materials and the Bitterroot Quilters put their nimble fingers to work sewing the quilts. Marcus Daly Memorial Hospital extends its deep appreciation to both organizations for this generous donation of money and time. These lovely quilts represent a spirit of giving that will continue as they provide a little tender loving care to our smallest patients when they most need it. SUMMER 2009 | 11
