ANNUAL
REPORT
OUR MISSION
The mission of the Boulder History Museum is
to foster understanding and appreciation for the
unique history of the Boulder region and the
resourceful, innovative people who have chosen to
live here — a living history that grows with each
new generation.
2
April 2008
Dear Members and Friends of the Boulder History Museum,
Organizations are always evolving and continuously striving to get better. They do that
by making small improvements every day, and major ones periodically. The major
advances often involve changes in focus and the reinvention of how the organization
seeks to reach its goals. Over the last several years, the Boulder History Museum has
made many incremental improvements through the hiring of highly capable staff, the
development of quality exhibits and programs and improvements in the protection of
our collection. We are now embarking on a significant leap in how we can accomplish
our mission by investigating the possibility of a new museum for Boulder.
The Board of Trustees envisions a new Boulder History Museum on the civic use pad
next to the St. Julien Hotel. At this time it is only a vision, but the board and staff are
working hard to turn it into reality. While we are approaching the project cautiously as
responsible stewards of the Museum’s resources, we are excited about the possibilities
that a new museum might provide.
As you know, the Museum convened a Visioning Task Force last year to look at how
we could best serve the Boulder region. Through community focus groups, brainstorming
sessions and thoughtful discussions, we have developed some goals. These include:
providing an accurate record of the community’s roots,
illustrating the activities, events and people that made the Boulder region what it is
today,
suggesting a direction in which the community might be moving for the future,
becoming a gathering place for discussions of contemporary issues, and
serving as an educational resource for students and others to learn about the place
in which they live.
These are big goals which can be best met with a new facility, but there are other
improvements underway as well. Watch for a new website, more interaction with
members and friends and increased outreach to the community. The staff and board
are working hard to make the Boulder History Museum more relevant to you. So get
involved, tell us what you like (or don’t like) and what you want from your museum.
Together we can make this next year our most memorable.
Sincerely,
FROM THE PRESIDENT
Dennis Berry
President, Board of Trustees
2007 YEAR IN REVIEW
In addition to the permanent exhibit, Storymakers, the Boulder History Museum presents
two to three new exhibits every year in the Harbeck House galleries. Some of these exhibits
are developed by the Museum staff and focus directly on the people, events, businesses
and activities of the Boulder area. Others are traveling exhibits that are on loan from
other museums. While these may have a broader historical focus, we use artifacts and
photographs from our collection to illustrate the connections to our local history.
Tea to Tofu:
Boulder’s Natural Food
Phenomenon
October 15, 2006 - June 10, 2007
Tea to Tofu highlighted the history of the
natural food industry in Boulder. From the
opening of the holistic Boulder-Colorado
Sanitarium in 1896 to the myriad of natural
food companies that thrive in Boulder today,
this exhibit traced the history of how
Boulder has become the epicenter of the
natural food industry.
Shakespeare:
Celebrating 50 years of the
Colorado Shakespeare Festival
June 30, 2007 - September 9, 2007
This colorful display of costumes, props, posters and
photographs presented the fascinating history of the
past five decades of the Colorado Shakespeare Festival
on the CU campus.
Let’s Play:
Pastimes from the Past
October 7, 2007 - January 7, 2008
Let’s Play, a traveling exhibit from the Rogers
Museum in Arkansas, took visitors back to a
time before television and computer games.
On display were fun and fascinating examples
of games, hobbies, sports, and other activities
that Americans found to pass the time. With
artifacts from the Museum's collection and
games from local Boulder companies, this
exhibit became a favorite for family visitors.
ENGAGING CHILDREN
Through our programming and exhibits,
the Boulder History Museum is attracting
more families than we have in the past.
We continue to expand our opportunities
for school children and scout groups. The
number of children served by Museum
programs both onsite and offsite in 2007
was more than 2600, a 28% increase over
2006.
In conjunction with the Tea to
Tofu exhibit, we invited Girl
Scouts to explore organic
foods and to try new recipes
cooking with tofu. They also
had the opportunity to create
their own blends of tea.
REACHING OUT
Through a grant from SCFD
and the generous donation of a
vehicle by the Anuta family, the
Museum was able to debut a
series of outreach programs,
History to Go, designed to be
offered in school classrooms
and community meeting places.
These new programs include
cultural themes like the celebration of Dia de los Muertos, and living
history programs that chronicle Boulder's early history through
engaging stories and historic photographs.
6
COLLABORATION
In 2007, the Museum worked
closely with other community
organizations to enrich our
program offerings. In partnership
with Banjo Billy Tours we created
a fun, collaborative bus tour and
Museum program.
The Museum worked with the
Colorado Shakespeare Festival to
provide family programs, and
also to serve as a venue for the
culminating performances of
their summer youth camp.
During the fall of 2007 the
Museum’s Curator of Education
worked extensively with the
Whittier Elementary School to
commemorate the school's 125th
Anniversary. They wrote and
performed a history play depicting
the naming of the Whittier school.
COMMUNITY EVENTS
Retro Ski Day 2007
The Museum’s second annual Retro Ski
Day at Eldora Mountain Resort was held
on March 10 th to celebrate Boulder’s ski
history. Retro skiwear, Boulder trivia,
oldies music and prizes donated by area
businesses make for a fun filled day at
Boulder County’s only ski resort. More
than 2000 people participated in this
great event.
Speaker Series
The Boulder History Museum hosted a variety of
programs with a broad range of interests. More than
410 people attended the Speaker Series offered by the
Museum.
Natural Conversations with Extraordinary People
In this popular series, eight remarkable people who have made their mark in the
natural foods and health industry shared their personal stories and their thoughts on
how Boulder has shaped the world of natural and organic foods.
8
SummerFest 2007
Our annual summer family day provided a
myriad of fun opportunities for the more than
800 people in attendance. A sampling of activities
included gold panning, rock climbing, mixing
organic teas and composting.
Posh Picnics
We hosted five Posh Picnics at the
Harbeck House in June and July.
Diners enjoyed gourmet picnics on the
Museum grounds and then traveled on
Banjo Billy’s bus to Chautauqua for a
Colorado Music Festival concert or to
CU for a Colorado Shakespeare Festival
performance. 74 people attended
the picnics.
WinterFest 2007
Our annual December WinterFest celebration was
kicked up a notch in 2007 with the addition of a
Gingerbread House contest. The Museum was
filled with 35 wonderful, edible gingerbread
houses made by
Boulderites of
all ages. More than
300 people attended
WinterFest 2007.
9
VOLUNTEERS
In 2007 our volunteers logged over 3000 hours helping with school tours, scout and
outreach programs, special events, research, exhibits, collections documentation, and
serving on the Board of Trustees and Museum committees. We are very lucky to have
such dedicated and capable volunteers.
Thank you!
THE COLLECTION
Following a year-long hiatus while we moved our collection into the Christensen Storage
Facility, the Museum has returned to actively collecting artifacts. Peter Lundskow was
hired in July as our new Curator of Collections and is implementing a new focus on
collecting items of more recent age that are connected with the vital life of commerce that
connects Boulder globally. Examples of objects donated to the Museum in 2007 include
an extensive collection from the 97 year history of the Smith Shoe Company and objects
from natural product companies, including WhiteWave and the recently purchased Wild
Oats. Artifacts that cover the personal stories of Boulder residents include a player piano
with over 100 piano rolls and a large photographic collection documenting one family’s
history from 1900 to the 1980s.
