four-season destination is just 100 miles from Denver
and 130 miles from Colorado Springs—a one-tank trip
that’s easy on the budget and on the eyes. All the
highways in Lake County are part of the Top of the
Rockies Scenic and Historic Byway, one of the most
beautiful drives in all of Colorado—if not the country.
Charming downtown
Harrison Avenue and the streets in downtown
Leadville are lined with Victorian architecture,
specialty shops, antique stores, restaurants and
museums. Check out locally-made foods, clothing and
artwork. Dining runs the gamut from a quick bite to a
relaxing meal to slowly savor with friends and family.
After dark, sidle up to the bar in an 1880s saloon,
dance to live music or take a moonlight stroll through
downtown.
North America? It means abundant, all-natural snow
for downhill skiing and riding, and 50+ miles of free,
groomed trails for Nordic skiing, hiking, snowshoeing,
snow biking and snowmobiling. Our springtime
visitors continue to enjoy the winter trails before the
snowmelt. Backcountry skiing is abundant and there
are various locations to enjoy it.
Year-round
Explore Leadville’s National Historic Landmark
District, dusk walking tours and moonlight stargazing
all year.
Your friends in high places await your visit. See you
very soon for your el-e-vacation in Leadville and Twin
Lakes!
Abundant Recreation
Sunshine, fresh air and mountains as far as the eye can see.
Ride
Race
Clear, sparkling rivers, streams and lakes for fishing, floating and
paddling.
Enjoy trails that range from short and easy enough for beginners, to
what may well be the most challenging endurance courses in the world.
Visit our family-oriented ski resort and golf course that are both best
described as friendly, affordable and beautifully maintained. These are
just a few of the reasons travelers come from around the globe to play,
train and compete in Leadville and Twin Lakes.
Ride on. So many choices! Ride a bike on the roads, on
the trails or in the snow, or a horse, a snowmobile, a
sled pulled by dogs or an ATV through the San Isabel
and White River National Forests. Or ride a
motorcycle on winding country roads. Road cyclists
love the challenging beauty of Independence Pass and
the Turquoise Lake routes. Ride a green, blue or black
diamond run at Ski Cooper. You can even sit back,
relax and take a ride on a stagecoach or the historic
Leadville Railroad.
Play
Against the clock or against your fellow athletes, test
your mettle here. In addition to the epic Leadville Race
Series 100-mile and 50-mile foot and mountain bike
races, there are 5ks and 10ks, fun runs, paintball
biathlons, triathlons and marathons. Race on skis,
snowshoes or snow bikes. Watch skiers pulled by
cowboys on horseback race down snow-packed
Harrison Avenue during the annual ski joring weekend.
Fore! Mt. Massive Golf Course is the highest course in
North America, where a ball flies further! Surrounded
by snow-capped mountains and forest, the greens rival
those at high-end resorts. You won’t find the attitude
or the high prices here, but you will find a peaceful,
laid-back course that welcomes players of all ages and
abilities. Also find golf cart and club rentals, lessons, a
grill and a pro shop. In winter, the greens transform
into groomed ski trails, where well-behaved canine
companions are welcome to come and enjoy the
experience, too.
Ski or Ride
The runs are long and the lines are short. The Ski
Cooper Chicago Ridge ski area is family-friendly and
fun, with lessons for all skill levels, plus equipment
rentals and childcare. It's a community-owned ski area
just nine miles from downtown Leadville, offering
snowcat skiing on Chicago Ridge in addition to its
conventional chairlift runs. Grab a bite to eat or a
drink at the lodge and listen to live music on the deck.
There are also more than 50+ miles of free, groomed
trails for Nordic and cross-country skiing,
snowmobiling, snowshoeing and snow biking in and
around Leadville. In fact, this is the go-to destination
for winter bike racing in Colorado. Leadville was one
of the first places in the nation to embrace this
up-and-coming sport.
Hike
Lace up the hiking boots and choose your path. There
really are trails that are right for everyone, whether you
are on a quest to spot wildflowers at a leisurely pace,
check a Fourteener off your bucket list or follow the
Continental Divide and Colorado Trails, which follow
the same route through Lake County.
Skate, Sled & Soar
You can soar into town at the Leadville-Lake County
Airport, the highest-elevation airport in North
America, or soar over the treetops on a zipline. In the
winter, pack up the kids and the tubes and come on up
for free, family fun soaring and sliding down Dutch
Henri Sledding Hill. (Rent tubes on the weekends if
you don’t have your own.) Soar around and around at
the 30,000-square-foot Leiter Ice Skating Rink, one of
the best deals you’ll find.
Catch
Catch…your limit! A 102-mile stretch of the Arkansas
River, which has its headwaters in and runs through
Lake County, has recently achieved Gold Medal status;
that means it’s one of the best trout-fishing spots in the
country. Or, cast a line on the shore or from a boat at
Turquoise or Twin Lakes, at Hayden or Forebay
Reservoirs or any number of smaller high alpine lakes
and streams. Try a different spot every day of your stay!
6
Splash
Fishing isn’t the only way to enjoy our clean, cool
waters. You can ride the rapids on the Arkansas River,
America’s most-popular whitewater rafting river, and
book your trip right here in Leadville. Or rent a kayak,
canoe or stand up paddle surfboard and row around
Turquoise Lake or Twin Lakes. There are guided boat
tours to the Interlaken Resort at Twin Lakes. And you
can splish and splash at the Lake County Aquatic
Center’s indoor pool and water slide, or relax in the
hot tub and sauna.
Escape
7
Escape...into the backcountry. Hike or ski to a yurt or
one of a dozen 10th Mountain Division Huts that are
located near Leadville, or pitch a tent in a secluded
national forest campsite. With more than 188,000
acres of national forest and Bureau of Land
Management lands spread over 368 square miles, it’s
not hard to find your own little piece of heaven. Stock
up on food and supplies right here in Leadville.
Bookend a multi-day backcountry adventure, at its
beginning and end, with a stay in a hotel, motel, B&B,
condo or vacation rental in Leadville or Twin
Lakes—for an ideal combination of roughing it—and
indulging in the charm and comfort of town. (That
shower and hot meal are deluxe after a couple days in
the hinterlands!)

Heritage at Altitude
We're Colorado's historic gem.
Welcome to the Old West! Leadville may well be the West’s most
authentic mining town, with a vivid Colorado heritage of wild contrasts: mining wealth and
high-falutin' residents, to the down-and-out; incredible luck to devastating misfortune.
“Chicken Bill” Lovell, “Broken Nose” Scotty, “Big
Nose” Kate and Soapy Smith are all part of Leadville’s
colorful cast of characters. Mary Foote, the real-life
inspiration for Wallace Stegner's Pulitzer
Prize-winning novel "Angle of Repose" was a resident.
Teddy Roosevelt also paid visits to Leadville, and
Ulysses S. Grant arrived on the first train to Leadville.
Gunslinger-gambler-dentist Doc Holliday was one of
the most legendary visitors to Leadville. Conflicting
accounts of his story abound, but records indicate that
he shot and wounded Bill Allen in August 1884; the
last man on record shot by Holliday.
The 1893 repeal of the Sherman Silver Purchase Act
spelled ruin for Horace Tabor and more. Local
businessmen decided to combat the downturn of the
economy by building the incredible Ice Palace during
the winter of 1895-1896. The magnitude and ambition
of this project is legion: it required 5,000 tons of ice to
be cut from the nearby lakes and it featured life-sized
sculptures of prospectors and burros, a skating rink
and a “gallery of commerce” with frozen produce, beer
and more. A Crystal Carnival, with parade and
fireworks, lit up the town as well.
It started back in 1860, when gold was discovered in
California Gulch. Eight thousand prospectors soon
arrived, and within five years, more than $4 million in
gold was found using sluice boxes and pan — more
than at any other site in Colorado at the time.
The gold played out, but was quickly followed by the
silver boom. By 1880, Leadville had more than 30,000
residents, innumerable stores, hotels, boarding houses
and, of course, more than 100 saloons, dance halls,
gambling joints and brothels.
An upper class developed alongside the silver boom.
Horace Tabor, who owned a general mercantile store
with his first wife Augusta, invested in mining with
incredible success. He built and opened the lavish
10
Tabor Opera House, banks and hotels. Other brilliant
financial careers began in Leadville, too: Charles
Boettcher, David May, the Guggenheims, Marshall
Field, W.B. Daniels, Jesse McDonald and James V.
Dexter are a few. In its heyday Leadville was one of the
most sophisticated and modern cities in the world, and
was even a contender to become Colorado's state
capitol.
Lots of famous figures lived in and visited Leadville.
Margaret “Molly” Brown arrived as a teenager in the
early 1880s, working as a seamstress in a dry goods
store. She married J.J. Brown and became the
“Unsinkable” Molly Brown, survivor of the Titanic.
Marshal Martin Duggan, Texas Jack, Buffalo Bill,
Mining was not the only interest that the nation had in
Leadville. In 1889, Congress established a national fish
hatchery on the east side of Mt. Massive. It’s now the
oldest fish hatchery west of the Mississippi River, with
free tours and access to trails. Families love the new
picnic shelter and playground at this historic site.
11
Mining continued, with zinc, lead and copper. The
industry’s last great resurgence came in 1918 with the
opening of the massive Climax Molybdenum Mine
north of Leadville, now once again in operation,
supplying the world with molybdenum for
manufacturing.
In 1942, Camp Hale was established 17 miles north of
Leadville as a training site for ski troopers for the 10th
Mountain Division of the U.S. Army. During training,
Leadville was a slice of civility for troops on leave. After
World War II, many of these ski troopers returned to
the state and were instrumental in the development of
the Colorado ski industry. Following the war, Ski
Cooper, pioneered by these soldiers, opened to the
public as a family-friendly ski area for locals and
visitors alike.
Just 15 minutes from Leadville lies the historic village
of Twin Lakes, a busy mountain transportation hub
between Aspen and Leadville during the gold rush days
with its hotel, general store, blacksmith shop and
schoolhouse. The Interlaken Resort originally opened
in 1897 and eventually grew into a 100-acre complex
that included a lodge, cabin, dance pavilion, servants’
quarters, stable and hexagonal outhouse! To get there,
take a boat tour across the lake, or if you have time,
take the two-mile hike around the lake.
Today, Leadville and Twin Lakes have preserved an
astonishing history. Explore and experience it at eight
museums and two National Historic Districts. Guided
and self-guided walking and driving tours of
downtown, the Evergreen Cemetery and the historic
mining district are available. There are also two
festivals, Ski Joring in March and Boom Days in
August that you won’t want to miss: book lodging early
for these events.
12
Evergreen Cemetery
Many people came and went during Leadville’s boom,
and many died and were buried here. Evergreen
Cemetery, located at McWethy Drive and James Street,
is a grand turn-of-the-century Victorian cemetery.
About 17,000 souls have been laid to rest in plots,
some adorned with expensive wrought iron enclosures
and elaborate headstones. But Leadville also had its
share of the homeless and destitute, buried in the free
sections of the cemetery in graves with no markers, or
wood markers that are still intact but unreadable.
Countless headstones of children and babies who died
at a tender age are a reminder of the harsh conditions
that existed here in the late 1800s.
Two of the most famous residents of Evergreen
Cemetery are: "Texas Jack" Omohundro, co-founder of
Buffalo Bill's Wild West Show and Marshal George
O'Connor, the first Leadville lawman killed in the line
of duty in 1878. Other notable grave sites are the
Homestake Avalanche Memorial, a testament to ten
miners who were killed at the mine in 1885, and the Red
Mausoleum which contains the remains of the Teller
family, each in a hermetically sealed glass-top coffin.
Museums & More
Museums – No big surprise
for one of the most historic cities in
Colorado, Leadville has eight attractions
within its historic district. You will want to
see all, so stop by the Leadville - Twin Lakes
Visitor Center at 809 Harrison Avenue to
purchase a Passport good for discounted
admissions during the summer months.
Smithsonian of the West," visitors are always impressed
by the detailed dioramas depicting the early days of
mining, walk-through replicas of underground mines,
a fabulous collection of minerals and much more. Kids
will love the exhibit of everyday things and how mining
plays a role in their manufacture.
Matchless Mine
1 ¼ miles on E. 7th St. • 719-486-1229
This mine was at the heart of the Tabor fortune. Upon
his death, Horace Tabor left the mine to his second
wife, Baby Doe. She lost the mine in 1927 to satisfy her
debts, but remained living in an old cabin on the site.
After a blizzard in 1935, some neighbors noticed that
no smoke was coming out of the chimney and found
the body of Baby Doe frozen on the floor.
The Tabor Opera House
308 Harrison Ave. • 719-486-8409
Built in 1879 by Horace Tabor, the opera house was
once billed as the finest theatre between St. Louis and
San Francisco, and had many famous people perform
on its stage including Harry Houdini, John Philip
Sousa, Oscar Wilde and Anna Held. No expense was
spared on the building and its furnishings. Around the
turn of the century there were 150 opera houses in the
State of Colorado; today there are only eight.
Andrew Carnegie donated funds to Leadville for the
establishment of its first library, which is now the home
of the Heritage Museum. The museum houses a fine
collection of Leadville memorabilia—Victorian
furniture, mining and boomtown miscellany. View the
scale model replica of the world’s largest Palace of Ice
built in Leadville in 1896, the display of photographs and
mementos of the 10th Mountain Division at Camp Hale.
Built in 1884, this is the oldest of the area's frontier
synagogues. After a fire in 2006, the building was
historically restored to near original condition and
now serves as a museum that documents life during
that era for Jewish pioneers.
Open by appointment year-round; call ahead to arrange a tour.
Tabor Home
116 East 5th St. • 719-486-7368
The home of Horace Tabor and his first wife, Augusta,
was built around 1877 and moved from its original site
on Harrison Avenue to its present location to make
room for the Tabor Opera House. Horace and Augusta
lived in the house until 1881 when Horace left Augusta
for his mistress Baby Doe and never regained his
prestige as a result. Augusta, Leadville's "First Lady,"
had great courage, superhuman endurance and unusual
business acumen. A dozen years after the sensational
divorce that broke her heart, she died a millionaire. In
that very same year, Horace Tabor was bankrupt.
Open May 23-Labor Day, Open Daily
House with the Eye Museum
127 W. 4th St. • 719-427-0895
Famed for its “eye,” the stained glass window tucked
under an arched eave, this is an example of
architectural whimsy popular in the late 1880s.
Visitors can see how more prominent Leadvillites
furnished their homes during the city’s
turn-of-the-century heyday. Amidst Victorian
furnishings are the original nooses from all of
Leadville’s legal hangings.
Open daily 10am-4pm in summer
Take a Pass to the Extraordinary:
Scenic Beauty
Take the Road Less Traveled
“Two roads diverged in a wood, and I—
I took the one less traveled by,
And that has made all the difference.”
- Robert Frost
20
Time spent enjoying nature is time well spent. If you’re looking for the road less
traveled and longing to be inspired by majestic mountains and pristine wilderness,
it’s high time you paid us a visit.
Stay for the weekend, or the week, in Leadville or Twin Lakes as your headquarters
to take in all of the sights. The smallest crowds and best deals can be found
mid-week. You’re going to want to remember these views and share them with your
friends. So, pack the camera and an extra memory card, and get ready to be wowed.
Read on for ten not-to-miss attractions, activities and sites, along with some
El-e-vacationers' tips for getting the best photos.
21
1. Top of the Rockies National Scenic and Historic
Byway – This paved, 115-mile scenic byway is one of
just 53 in the nation. While you’re here, take the drive
in both directions for two entirely different views!
El-e-vacationers' tips: Pull over at the base of Tennessee
Pass and hike to the historic site of Camp Hale. The
training site for the 10th Mountain Division during
World War II, Camp Hale is an excellent place for
watchable wildlife, including foxes, deer and elk; U.S.
24 south of Leadville is a good place to spot pronghorn
antelope, bighorn sheep, moose and jaw-dropping
views of the Collegiate Peaks. Always find a safe spot to
pull off the road.
2. On the trails — Landscape and wilderness
photography is unrivaled around Leadville and Twin
Lakes. Get off the roads and on the trails to find the
spots that others might miss. More than 188,000 acres
of national forest and Bureau of Land Management
land will keep you busy for days!
El-e-vacationers' tips: The Timberline Lake Trail is a
five-mile hike that’s suitable for beginners. The Leadville
National Fish Hatchery has a one-mile loop, the
Evergreen Lakes Nature Trail, with interpretive signs
that identify flora and fauna. There are five trails that
access the famed 500-mile Colorado Trail, including
access from Twin Lakes and the Mt. Massive Trail.
3. Mineral Belt Trail – You can hike, bike, ski and
snowshoe this 11.6-mile, non-motorized trail that
loops downtown Leadville and the outlying areas.
You’ll be in awe of the Sawatch and Mosquito
mountain range views, wildflower meadows, conifer
forests and major historical sites.
El-e-vacationers' tips: You can explore California Gulch
and the mining district from this trail, which is paved
and ADA-accessible.
4. Historic Mining District – The Route of the Silver
Kings leads visitors on a driving tour through the
historic mining district surrounding Leadville. This
tour of mines, ghost towns and mining camps begins
downtown at Monroe St. and Harrison Ave. It takes a
few hours to complete by car.
El-e-vacationers' tips: Maps and souvenir booklets are
available at the Leadville-Twin Lakes Visitor Center.
5. Chicago Ridge - Soak in spectacular scenery along
the Continental Divide as a cozy snowcat takes you to
12,600 feet. The slopes in this backcountry area,
roughly the size of Vail's Back Bowls at 2,600 acres,
vary from 3,000 to 10,000 feet in length with vertical
drops up to 2,000 feet per run in abundant, all-natural
snow. Chicago Ridge Snowcat Tours is one of the
longest continuously operating backcountry ski
touring operations in the world; don't miss this
one-of-a-kind adventure.
skicooper.com/snowcat-skiing
El-e-vacationers' tips: If backcountry skiing and
snowboarding aren't for you, take a two-hour tour in
the snowcat and take home some amazing photos of a
dozen peaks and panoramas from this high-altitude
vantage point.
6. Turquoise Lake – This peaceful mountain lake is a
locals’ favorite for fishing, hiking, camping— and even
stand up paddle boarding in the summer; for ice
fishing, snowmobiling, snowshoeing and Nordic skiing
in the winter.
El-e-vacationers' tip: Get some shots at the lake, and
then get a birds’-eye view of this pristine blue-water
phenomenon on a horseback ride through the San
Isabel and White River National Forests.
22
23
7. Mt. Elbert and Mt. Massive – At 14,440 and
14, 421 feet respectively, these are the two highest
peaks in Colorado. Not only that, but they lay claim as
highest peaks in the Rocky Mountains! They provide
the stunning backdrop for much of what you’ll see
while you’re here, whether you’re driving, strolling
through downtown or out on the trails.
El-e-vacationers' tips: Both of these “Fourteeners” are
non-technical hikes and therefore rated as "easy" by
Fourteener standards, but all hikers should be prepared
for the high altitude and rapid changes in the weather.
Stop by the Leadville Forest Service District Office on
Highway 24 just south of Leadville to make sure you’re
prepared before starting out. If summiting one of these
peaks isn’t for you, they can be photographed from
different angles throughout Lake County.
These are just a few ideas to get you
started. At night, tuck yourself in for a
good night’s sleep at one of our several
inns, hotels, motels, B&Bs, cabins,
condos and vacation rentals—or even a
yurt! Then start your adventure anew
tomorrow. As your status as an
el-e-vacationer soars, you’ll find photo
opportunities around every corner and
with each new step.
8. Twin Lakes – No matter the season, this stunning
panoramic view is one of the most beautiful and
among the most-photographed spots in Colorado.
Glacial lakes are ringed by rugged, snow-capped
Fourteeners, lush evergreen forests and quaking aspen
groves.
El-e-vacationers' tips: Explore the lakes on kayaks or on
a guided boat tour to the historic Interlaken Resort,
which can also be reached by trail on the south side of
the lakes. Picnic on the banks, and then walk the paths
through the Historic Twin Lakes Village.
24
9. Independence Pass – This winding mountain road
links Twin Lakes and Aspen during the warmer
months, usually from Memorial Day Weekend through
October depending on the weather. Paved trails at the
summit offer spectacular views.
El-e-vacationers' tips: There are many trailheads on the
pass. Bring water, snacks, maps and a compass, and
dress for altitude on the highest paved pass in North
America: layers, a waterproof jacket, a hat and
sunscreen. On the west (Aspen) side of the pass,
discover Independence Ghost Town, a silver mining
settlement from the late 1870s.
10. Fall Foliage
Just when you think it can’t get any prettier up here,
Mother Nature works her magic, and fall makes its way
into the high country. Subtle shades of yellow start to
appear here and there throughout the lush, green
forests. Early snowfall tops off the mountain peaks.
With each new day, more yellow appears, then gold,
brilliant orange and occasional highlights of deep red.
The aspen leaves quake with every breeze, making the
mountainsides shimmer with color. The sun shines
down from a brilliant, bluebird Colorado sky. Take a
deep breath and remember this view forever.
Spend a few days here to take it all in. The Top of the
Rockies National Scenic and Historic Byway, which
includes all of the highways in Lake County, should be
at the top of your list for must-do fall drives. Make
reservations for a ride on the Leadville Railroad. Bike
the Mineral Belt Trail. Hike to the historic 1880s
Interlaken Resort at Twin Lakes. And don’t forget
Independence Pass; there’s a reason it was named “One
of America’s Prettiest Fall Drives” by Forbes.com.
heritage, held the first full weekend in August, is
jam-packed with live music and entertainment, a
parade, mining competitions, motorcycle games,
vendor fair, rod and gun show, kids’ games and 1880s
costume contests. The International Leadville Pack
Leadville Ski Joring & Crystal Carnival
LeadvilleSkiJoring.com March 4 - 6, 2016
Part Wild West and part extreme sports, ski
joring—each horse-and-rider team pulling a skier down
a snow-packed road, over jumps, while spearing rings in
a timed competition—has been an annual event in
Leadville since 1949. Held the first full weekend in
March, you can also watch or participate in Nordic and
winter mountain bike races, and a paintball biathlon.
