Learning & Teaching NEWS Learning and Teaching encompasses the following areas: Student Outcomes, Curriculum, Assessment, Reporting, Principles and Pedagogy. ADVENT - WEEK 3 As we begin the third week of Advent, we anticipate Christmas, and so we ask Christ to grant us His grace that we might be prepared for welcoming His Birth. We humbly beg Thee, O Lord, to listen to our prayers; and by the grace of Thy coming bring light into our darkened minds. Who livest and reignest for ever and ever. Amen ST VINCENT DE PAUL CHRISTMAS APPEAL Traditionally OLGC school has supported the St Vincent De Paul Christmas Appeal, that distributes gifts to children who would otherwise go without. The significance of this worthwhile cause has been discussed with all students and as a result of this we have set up The Giving Tree in the atrium. We ask that all families support this endeavour by purchasing a gift for either a boy or girl clearly labeled with an approximate age level suitability. All gifts can be left under the tree. SCHOOL BANKING The last school banking day for 2012 will be Thursday 6 December. Congratulations to all the children who have saved money in 2012. NEWS REFRESHMENT STALL AT SCHOOL CONCERT VOLUNTEERS REQUIRED The PA is helping out at the school concert with the running of a refreshment stall before the concert, and then during the 15 minute interval. We need a few helpers to man the stall. I will be on hand both nights. If you can help, please contact me at jaelees2001@yahoo.com.au Judy Lees President Parents’ Association SECOND HAND UNIFORM SHOP If you have any unwanted uniform items, the clothing pool is constantly needing to replenish its stock. Items can be left at the office. We will be holding the final second hand uniform stall for 2012 on Monday 17 December from 3.15pm to 3.45pm. Thank you Jenna Purcell and Hannah Clennett LOST PROPERTY A reminder to everyone to check the lost and found before the year ends. Any unmarked items will be sold at the final second hand uniform stall on Monday December 17. Please also remember to check the plastic tub in the atrium filled with unmarked plastic containers. School Community NEWS School Community encompasses the following areas: Parents, Parish, School Advisory Council, Wider Community. 2012 PARENTS’ ASSOCIATION REVIEW The OLGC Parents’ Association has had another busy year overseeing events and activities to raise funds for the school, organize social programs, and support the staff in their work in the classroom, on excursions, and especially in celebration and events associated with faith, educational, cultural and social development of students. Many events roll over from one year to the next, and we have benefited from having experienced members help the newer ones to oversee the smooth running of each activity. For those of us, in particular, who are new to the school, we are fortunate in coming to an institution where a rich and active culture of service and participation exists. Many of the activities would have been impossible to run without the girls at the front desk. The sausage sizzle envelope initial sorting, clothing pool donations, formatting of flyers and general money handling have fallen to Megan and Christina. They are a font of information about the school and its community, and I don't think we have seen them draw a blank when presented with a query of the most obscure nature about the school and its workings - Thank-you girls. OLGC SOCIAL PROGRAM WELCOME FAMILIES Jenna Purcell has overseen the Welcome Families program, where new and existing families are matched. The host families provided an invaluable point of contact to help ensure that our new students, parents and little brothers and sisters always felt comfortable and welcomed, and had any assistance they needed, especially in the early days and weeks at this new school. CLASS REPRESENTATIVES Megan Gilmour coordinated our Class reps for the 14 year levels. They had the important role of support the teachers by arranging class contact lists and class room and excursion volunteering, arranging social events, and generally disseminating information. They have done a wonderful job. SOCIAL ACTIVITIES The social program has given our families an opportunity to establish and strengthen those attachments that make OLGC such an inclusive and supportive school. It would be a rare day where there were no discussions, texts and phone calls between parents helping one another manage the pick-ups, ferry one another's children to sport, and generally act as that safety net for each other. OUR YEAR STARTED WITH: Cheers and Tears Morning Tea (First day of term 1 - enough said...). Welcome drinks (organized by the outgoing presidents Helen Condilis and Belinda Rotella) Kew Traffic school afternoon ( term one, junior school - Thanks Jai De Stefanis) Prep dinner (Dana Katsiamakis and Mirella Messner were our coordinators) Ladies Lunch (Megan Gilmour headed the committee) School Disco (Nat Dunphy once again, ran this event) Father's Day Golf tournament (thanks to Brendan Egan) It was lovely to get to know one another away from the chaos of the drop offs, and pick ups. ICY POLE FRIDAY The icy pole sales on Friday afternoons in first and fourth term are a lovely way to finish off the busy week. They have been run by Andrea Reginato and Marita Fraser. Thanks Girls.
