Dr. M. Narayanan (Vice President, IMA Cochin), the keyman in IMA
House membership mobisation seen handing over the cheque for 200
membership from the Dental fraternity outside Ernakulam.
Truly a midas touch! It was a wonderful and meticulous
planning executed by Dr. Naraya nan.
Through his personal rapport with Dr. Raveendranathan,
President Indian Dental Association,
Kerala State, he saw the induction of
200 Dental surgeon as members of the
Lagoon. the process is still continuing.
Dr. M. Narayanan, with active involvement
of office bearers of IDA, identified
key-person among IDA in each district.
Mr. Balasubramaniam, Marketing Manager
of ima house went and met Dental Surgeon
in every district and convinced them
about ima house and The Lagoon. IDA took
it in the right spirit and motivated their
members to join us. IMA Cochin and IMA
House extend a warm welcome to our Dental
Colleagues to IMA House and The Lagoon.

IMA PROTEST day - 24th APRIL, WEDNESDAY
Come and join the protest, to save modern medicine!
Kerala State Health Services Department has put two proposals to Govt. of Kerala, which are
likely to have far reaching detrimental effects on the future of modern medicine.
1) To start AYUSH (Ayurveda, Unani, Siddha, Homoeopathy) Clinics in Taluk HQ
Hospitals.
2) Appoint graduate nurses as Community Health Officers in designated sub centres,
where they will work with equal powers of medical officers.
State Working Committee of IMA Keralala State Branch has come out with an action plan to
fight against these draconian moves. It has been decided to have two-hour OP boycott (10
am 12 noon) in all hospitals, clinics and doctors’ residences on 24th April. Dharnas will
be held in front of all Collectorates. Joint Action Council formed for this specific purpose
has also requested that each doctor should contribute Rs.200/- towards Action Fund.
All members of IMA Cochin are requested to comply with these decisions and assemble
in front of Collectorate , Kakkanad at 10 am on 24th April.

The IMA activities are in full swing. IMA
membership and Club lagoon membership
enhancement programme are going very well. Cochin
IMA and NRHM jointly celebrated The world Health
Day on 7th April 2013 as per the direction of state IMA
enlightening the theme High Blood Pressure. As part of
this programme, we conducted a medical camp, checking
the BP of people around Jawaharlal Nehru International
stadium from 6:30-8:30 am. We distributed brochures
of “How to control high blood pressure in day to day
life”. Public meeting of awareness programme at IMA
House was inaugurated by Union Food Minister Prof. K.V.
Thomas. Awareness class for public was inaugurated by
Worshipful Mayor Mr. Tony Chammani. I congratulate
Dr. Jilse George for presenting the scientific lecture at
this occasion. My sincere thanks to all the members
participated in this function.
A tribal medical camp was conducting on 7th April 2013
at Marayoor, Idukki District organized by IMA Cochin,
Rotary club of Ernakulam and Ear Out. I specially
congratulate Dr. O.V. Sudheer who was leading the
medical team and taking interest in this camp.

Rights of Patients - On the other half of Globe !
Dr. Jacob Abraham, Chief Cardiac Anaesthetist, Lisie Hospital
October 2012 : It was pleasant morning. Climate was cool,
comfortable with a blazer. I was on a visit to two university
hospitals in Europe, Leuven University in Belgium and Leiden
University in Holland, on invitation from the Department of
Anaesthesia of these hospitals.
I got down from the cab and walked down towards the main
entrance of Leuven University Hospital. I was taken aback by the
scene in front of main entrance.
Several inpatients were seen
relaxing and enjoying the cold
weather by smoking cigarettes with
all gadgets attached to their bodies!
These patients belonged to different
speciality admi ssions, even some
were having invasive central venous
line and with drug infusions on flow.
This aroused my curiosity and I
came to know from the Anaesthesia
Faculty that the right of a person to
smoke is not denied just because
he is hospitalised. At the same time
they encourage participation in smoking cessation programmes.
Few days later my visit was to Leiden University in Holland. I was taken around
the hospital and also to the Dept. of Anaesthesia and Cardio Thoracic surgery.
More surprise was in store for me. There were two patients on ecmo (Extra
Corporeal Membrane Oxygenation), the bridge before cardiac transplantation.
They were in the waiting period expecting to receive heart transplant. These
patients were seen sipping wine and beer in the hospital
bed, with all the gadgets attached to their bodies!!
There is a ban on smoking in various European Hospitals
but the Belgian and Holland hospitals are very liberal,
and give the freedom of smoking for patients in hospital
courtyards. These two countries have another uniqueness
of being the only two in the world where Euthanasia is
legalised. Euthanasia is usually done for terminally ill
patients and rarely for patients suffering from severe
depressive psychosis resistant to high doses of medications.

WIMA ACTIVITIES MARCH 2013
WIMA General Body meeting was
conducted on 26th March 2013 at 2.30
pm in IMA House.
This time we had a demonstration on
Flower Arrangment by Mrs. Shila George
from Cochin. It was a very interesting
session. All the ladies actively
participated in the demonstration.
She showed us how to make flower
arrangement with a single flower and leaf, then fresh flowers mixed
with dried flowers, then a huge central piece arrangement with lots
of flowers and green leaves.

General Hospital, Ernakulam witnessed a unique get-together of Doctors who had worked there earlier. It was a pleasant gettogether
for young and old alike. Programme was inaugurated by Mr. Hybi Eden, mla. Highlight of the day was the entertainment
programmes staged by Doctors, House surgeons and few talented among the hospital staff. It was a parting gift to the collegues and
predecessors by dr. Junaid Rahman (DMO Ernakulam).

Central Working Committee Meeting - 26th May
Leaders of IMA at National level will meet in IMA House
Cochin on 26th May (Sunday) to attend the Central
Working Committee Meeting of National IMA. This is for
the first time CWC meeting is to be held in Cochin. This is
going to be a prestigious event for IMA Cochin. We get an
opportunity to show case our IMA House in front of leaders of IMA from
all the States of India. An organising committee has been formed under
the chairmanship of Dr. Paulose (Past State President) for successful
conduct of CWC meeting.
An affectionate farewell was given to Mr. Raveendran who retired from
IMA Blood Bank after putting in 29 years of sincere and dedicated service.
Mr. Raveendran started his job in IMA Blood Bank on the day Blood Bank
was inaugurated. Members of IMA Blood Bank Trust and all staff members
of IMA and Blood Bank attended the farewell. IMA Cochin wish Raveendran
a comfortable and healthy life.

IMA Cochin Medicine Bank
Medicines were contributed by Dr. Narayanan M., Dr. Varghese
Cherian, Dr. Preethy Peter, Dr. Santhosh Mohan, Dr. George P.
Abraham, Dr. P. Ramakrishnan and Rajagiri Drug Bank.
IMA Cochin Medicine Bank gave free medicines to 157 patients in
the month of Jan 2013.

Dr. Junaid Rahman, who retired as D.M.O. Ernakulam
has been appointed as Director of CAPE. This is indeed
a great recognition from Govt. of Kerala to Dr. Junaid
who has done an yeomen service to oupgrade General
Hospital Ernakulam. Members of IMA Cochin congrtulate
Dr. Junaid and look forward to his ‘magic’ in Cochin
Medical College as well.
